Regency Romance: Sarah and the Historian, Book Two of The Dowagers’ Pact Trilogy, is a short story by Amelia Fernside.

Such was the life of Sarah Alder, the Dowager Duchess of Hillburton, ever since her husband died six years ago.
She had nine grandchildren she loved very much, but her daily life had become a quiet and sluggish monotony. Nonetheless, she had grown accustomed to her tedium. The slow drip of each day was what she expected.
That is, until two of her friends, dowagers both, talked her into making a pact: that each of them would try to find a new love.
They went to a ball. Sarah danced with an Italian viceroy, whose idea of conversation was to give one-word answers to her questions.
Sarah’s son introduced her to a widower who had decided he wanted to try something adventurous: painting. But she simply could not develop an attraction for him.
He did, however, give her an idea.
An adventure. That’s what she needed. An adventure.
Sometime later she got a letter from a man named Jacob Wellington, someone she did “not know from a barber’s chair.” He had seen her at a ball and was struck by her beauty and her “polite and sensible manner.” He asked if he could come to her manor and meet her. She laughed and was about to throw his letter away when a light came on in her head.
And that was the day boredom died.
The day the adventure Sarah longed for came to pass.
And what an adventure it was.

Once again Amelia Fernside has proven herself to be a master of the regency short story romance. I have read all seven works currently available and am an ardent fan. This particular story is the second of a trilogy about three Dowagers who have entered into a pact to move beyond the stayed lives they are leading after the deaths of their husbands to find romance once again. I love this concept. Romantic relationships are not just for the young, but give spice to life at every stage. Sarah and Jacob's story is a fast read, but does not lack in depth, interesting plot twists, or realism. I look forward to reading the final book of this trilogy.
