The first thing that I would like to say about this book is that it is one of the longest books that i have ever read.
This is on great story that tells that walks the readers throughout the lifetime of Helen Junot... ever since she was a kid, up until 600+ pages later, until her adult life.
The story is full of adventure, thrill, surprise and heartbreak. It has a happy ending though! Worth every minute spent reading!
Dear God what a treat was this read. It was heartbreaking and full of glamour and mystery. There were parts that were cringe due to the time period it was written in, but it was a fantastic read nonetheless. I couldn’t put it down, and at 700+ pages it was an epic tale.
Unfortunately this was an abridged audio edition so I'm sure I missed out on a lot based on what I'm seeing in other reviews. Didn't know it was a mini series in 1986 either. Would like to see it... The story starts in France during WWII when Helene Junot as a young girl is forced to leave her parents, siblings, & home behind. She survives the tragedies of her childhood (although her family doesn't) & vows revenge. She works her way up the ladder of the fashion world using beauty & brains. She eventually builds the biggest fashion magazine empire & is director of a top fashion house in Paris. She never forgot the vow of revenge against the Nazis for the devastation of her family & acts upon it...
The much younger me picked this up in a used book store. I started reading it last spring, and I was starting to think I'd never get through it. Parts were interesting to me, particularly in France during WWII. Found personal interactions entertaining and liked the ending. However, a good third of the book was spent describing the various glamorous locations around the world as well as high end fashion. Probably a good third of a lengthy book could have been cut with less of this. A real life example is that much had to be cut to make this into a mini-series in the mid 1980s starring Jackie Collins. I debated between two and three stars, and just the writer's effort alone pushed it into the three star rating. This particular edition included stills from the mini-series.
Turns out that the author, 'Judith Gould' is actually two writers. Nick Bienes, and Rhea Gallaher. Besides being co-writers of romance novels, the two men are a romantically involved and live in a luxury suite in New York's Hotel Chelsea.
I didn’t like the heroine, she is a bitch looking for vengeance the same way her rivals do. I‘ve read three more from this writer duo that were superior to this one. Or perhaps it is just not the right character for 2020...
Such a powerful story which truly stays with you long after you've finished it. I read this several years ago initially, and then again this week. It is just as good now as it was then.
I went to school and graduated with "Nick" Bienes. We were friends and I can remember sitting in front of him in 11th grade English when he was starting out to be a writer. I had no idea at that time that he would become a New York Times Best Selling author. He and his partner Rhea (pronounced Ray) Gallaher created the name Judith Gould and wrote romance novels up under that name until the time of his death. We kept in contact over the years and I was surprised when I found out hat the mini series Sins starring Joan Collins was written by him. I bought the novel about six or seven years ago. I read it at that time and have just reread it again this year. Yes it is worth reading twice. But at 600+ pages it takes a while to finish. I could hear Joan Collins voice and my friends Nick's laughter reading the book
