***This is a newsletter subscriber only short story, set before Blood Bound***
Sarah Gallows gets a phone call from a friend in trouble and her night unravels into chaos. Human friends and supernatural danger mean her two worlds are on a collision course.
I'm the twisted mind behind The Gallows Novels and the After Death Series. If you want to know a bit about me, here it is: I spend too much time indoors and probably watch too many horror films. Some of my favourite things are; Alone time, people who know when to shut up, having a drink, eating pizza (usually after having too much drink the night before), reading books, adult swim cartoons, bad horror and sci-fi movies, proper good TV shows like Dexter & The Walking Dead, and last but not least having a laugh with my hilarious other half - this would usually include some of the above.
I was worried when I started this short story. I try to avoid romance novels, and don’t particularly like sex scenes – and here was too much of both. Thank goodness it was all over by the third page, and the story turned into the wonderful supernatural, demon hunting piece I had been hoping for. I love the TV series “Supernatural” and adore “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”. In this story features of those two epic series are combined (with a bit extra) to create a new addition to the ‘heroes fighting evil’ canon. The author has the family dynamics of the Sarah, Shaun and their mother down perfectly. They may all depend on each other, and love each other, but that does not stop the sibling teasing, and frustration at being landed with the dirty jobs, or the exasperation of the mother, being dragged into a mess that her two children should have sorted out ages ago. I like the memory wipes – they save a lot of explanations, when the normal population needs to be kept in the dark. (So no more gas leaks?) It is a bit like “Men in Black” without the high tech. The writing was very good, and the pace did not let up until right at the end. I have to read more in this series. I received this copy from the author in exchange for an honest review
This was a quick read that showcased an earlier case for the Gallow twins. It was nice to see a softer side of Sarah. Seeing this side of her explains a lot of why she's harder in her 20's. I'd love to see more of these little short stories about the twins. I volunteered to read this book.
I haven't read any of the books in the 'Gallows Series' so I figured this was as good as any place to start. 'Double Dare' was a good action filled read. For being a short story I had a glimpse into Sarah, Shaun, Aaron, Jade, Lucy and of course, mum. I look forward to reading more of this series.
I received Double Dare as a free copy from the author. The gifting did not determine the review/rating, which reflects my honest opinion. There was not too much going on in this little short story-- more like a scene outtake, really. It may have been more interesting if I were following the characters in a series, but, as is, I didn't have any investment in the story line or protagonists. Good writing, just not a story that had meaning for me.
I tlove the series! I really enjoyed the opportunity the author gave for this email exclusive side story. A deeper look into Sarah and how her mind works before the first book of the Gallows series.
