About the author

Literary career of English novelist and playwright John Galsworthy, who used John Sinjohn as a pseudonym, spanned the Victorian, Edwardian and Georgian eras.

In addition to his prolific literary status, Galsworthy was also a renowned social activist. He was an outspoken advocate for the women's suffrage movement, prison reform and animal rights. Galsworthy was the president of PEN, an organization that sought to promote international cooperation through literature.

John Galsworthy was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature in 1932 "for his distinguished art of narration which takes its highest form in The Forsyte Saga."

Este es un libro curioso. Es muy simple, pero a la vez esconde un punto de reflexión bastante sorprendente. Al fin y al cabo, nos habla de un romance repentino entre un joven de clase alta y una campesina que tiene todos los clichés y dificultades usuales y predecibles. Y sin embargo, la forma de contarlo le añade una capa. Está narrado de la forma más romántica posible, y con ello quiero decir que se adhiere al Romanticismo como movimiento cultural y literario, con una descripción detallada (y exaltada) de los sentimientos, uniéndolos al paisaje y a la descripción de la fauna y la flora. Lo que le confiere un tono grandilocuente que se opone a los hechos, que no son otros que un típico romance corto que no debería tener más trascendencia; las decisiones de un joven que no es malvado, pero que opta por hacer lo cobarde, por tomar el camino fácil. Lo que narra esta novela no podría ser más ordinario, y sin embargo, ese lenguaje romántico utilizado hace que entiendas el final.

Es una novelita corta, muy ligera, donde no parece que ocurra nada, hasta el final.

I was quite impressed when I read this book over 50 years ago as a teenager. It follows the over-used formula of the rich or noble sophisticate who toys with the affection of the simple country lass with disastrous results. Writers, dramatists and movie-makers continue to produce works with this theme because a market exists for them.
Fans of the cynical and realistic Galsworthy may be disappointed with this trite melodrama.

Here Galsworthy is back with beauty of nature, this time weaving it into the story of young love that's told in a flashback as a man is startled when he recalls being at the spot he's resting at, on his silver wedding anniversary. It's a typical tale of a city youth of upper strata who happens on a farmhouse and falls in love with the innocent rustic young beauty, but when he goes to put his promise in action, meets people of his own set and realises he'd never marry his first love.

Galsworthy goes at length in his thoughts, emotions and wavering, his questioning and berating himself, before acting.

John Galsworthy recibió el Premio Nobel de literatura en 1932, por el reconocimiento de su fuerza descriptiva. Y este es, el punto fuerte de esta novelita (por corta). La descripción del mundo rural, de la vida de campo, de las emociones del protagonista, son sublimes.

Ahora bien, los estereotipos sobre los que se construyen, minan la fuerza del relato y lo convierten en algo cursi. Podríamos decir que es la escritura de un hombre de su época, pero Ford Madox Ford también lo es y sus personajes no están encorsetados en el estereotipo.

Pues no me ha gustado mucho, la verdad.

Annan tästä pistemääräksi 4/5. Uskomattoman hieno ajankuvaus ylioppilaan ja tavallisen maalaisihmisen elämän eroista. Traaginen rakkaustarina ensirakkaudesta, jossa omenakukkien tuoksu on huumavan viehättävä mielikuvallisesti että konkreettisesti. Upeaa, runollisen romanttista kieltä sekä selkeä tarina, jossa ilmentyy 1900-luvun alun ajanhenki uuden ajan ja menneen ajan murroksessa. Tarina ei tuonut minulle kyyneleitä, mutta sai enemmänkin pohtimaan Brittiläisen maailman silloista luokkayhteiskuntaa. Ja kieli! Vielä kielestä! Hivelee tällaisen ikiromantikon sydäntä ja tuntui kotoisalta näin ihmiselle, joka myös itse kirjoittaa mielellään maalaavia mielikuvia. ❤

It's such an amazing book. I loved it. I loved the way how John Galsworthy reveals the story of the past. He takes you from one end and revolves you around the whole story to bring you to the other end which is also the same as where you started.

Very sad short story!

Heartbreaking. Even though you sense the tragedy from the very first pages of the story. Perhaps that makes it even more heartbreaking. A typical, clichéd romantic story that ends in tragedy. But Galsworthy, through his way of storytelling and by introducing paranormal folkloric elements, makes it special and makes it stand out from other stories of this kind.

“When a man is as young as Ashurst, pity is not a powerful emotion.”

This line sums up the entire essence of the story. The protagonist, a young man freshly out of school and without life experience, becomes accidentally involved in an environment so natural and so far removed from his own reality that it makes everything around him seem fairytale-like and supernatural. Influenced by this setting and intoxicated by its magic, the thoughtless boy lets lustful impulses guide him toward the discovery of true love in an innocent girl. He realizes the crude mistake he has made when he returns to his own environment and his own world and is tempted by another woman, reaching the conclusion that he could neither love nor be loved by someone who does not belong to his world.
Or at least, that is how he tries to justify himself.

In truth, in Stella’s character he sees himself reflected in a mirror. He is not drawn to Stella because of Stella herself, but because she represents everything he has grown up with and been educated to believe constitutes the essence of his life. It could have been anyone other than Stella once he left the farm setting. It just so happened that Stella showed interest in him. In the end, it was not the choice of a greater love over a lesser one, but the sacrifice of a great, genuine, yet unpredictable love for a manageable life without surprises. This becomes impossible to miss when you return to the opening pages and to the way he describes Stella after all those years of marriage:

“The beauty of her blue eyes, the freshness and delicacy of her face, the grace of her body and the sweet colors that recalled apple blossoms had strangely charmed Ashurst twenty-six years earlier, but by now those virtues had long since faded. Despite the passage of time, even at the age of forty-three she remained an attractive and lovable woman, with slightly hollowed cheeks and eyes of a grayish blue, which showed her to be a confident and wise woman.”

Stella retains the same features and characteristics that once captivated the protagonist, yet now he sees them as faded. Throughout, he is consumed by regret for the lost love—a love he was reckless enough to claim in a moment of impulse, and cowardly enough not to hold on to, abandoning it in the most unworthy and cruel ways.

Se trata de un libro tremendamente sencillo. Un romance entre una campesina y un chico rico recién salido de la Universidad. Ambos con toda la vida por delante, pero en una época en la que aún había muchas diferencias sociales, con las complicaciones que ello implicaba y con los giros que te puede dar la vida.
El autor emplea un estilo de narración totalmente romántico pero sin rozar cursilería en modo alguno.

Novela dramática de 116 páginas, publicada en 1916. Me ha resultado más bien un folletín de la época. El joven protagonista se debate entre el amor hacia dos muchachas. Pero su indecisión acaba haciendo de éste un personaje insufrible. Muy bien escrita y con descripciones de la naturaleza muy hermosas, pero solo la recomiendo para una sola lectura.

Esta es una novela breve e interesante. Habla de la juventud, de las diferencias sociales, de la responsabilidad y las consecuencias de nuestras acciones. Un retrato de un joven inglés egocéntrico que actúa y siente, justificando sus acciones como nobles. El libro está lleno de descripciones bonitas sobre el campo en primavera.

Siempre es un placer volver a Galsworthy. Poco más de un centenar de páginas dan forma a esta historia sencilla, con tintes melodramáticos, contada de forma exquisita.

Un joven de ciudad, recién licenciado, se enamora de una campesina durante su estancia en una granja. Esta historia de amor sirve como excusa para hacer un certero estudio sobre el desamor, el deseo, los prejuicios y la influencia del entorno social. El autor, que anega de primavera las páginas, se muestra sovervio recreando atmósferas y dibujando paisajes. Ambientada en los albores del siglo XX, de algún modo, consigue que lo que nos cuenta siga todavía vigente. Acabé sintiendo nostalgia por parajes que jamás visité, personas que no conocí y primaveras que anegaron un mundo en el que yo no había nacido.

I must say that this book doesn't get in details but the situations and circumstances run really fast. I wish it had more details and of course more pages.

It's not realistic that in 2-3 days the couple takes the decision that they would get married and live life together. Also, it's strange that the boy in 2-3 days comes to the point that doesn't want to turn back to the farm to take the girl.

I think that this is a teen love but anyway, this doesn't mean that it's not strong or real enough. For the girl it has been real but i think the boy was really light-minded and he wasn't mature enough to value and consider this love. He wanted and valued fun, a city life and material prosperity more than love.

I guess this is not a good example of a relationship between a couple but it also gives the lesson of not hurrying when you like somebody because it may be not love. You have to be careful!

Un buen libro que no ha conseguido llegarme, de ahí que le dé dos estrellas. Galsworthy escribe muy bien, sin duda, pero sus descripciones de la naturaleza llegan a abrumarme por excesivamente prolijas. El tema tampoco me llega (joven granjera inocente seducida -casi- por universitario romántico insensato que se deja llevar por el ambiente bucólico). Quizá las descripciones y la prosa funcionen mejor en inglés, pero no dejo de tener la impresión de que la obra ha envejecido mal; y eso, a los verdaderos clásicos, no les pasa.
