The year is 1946 and despite the nightmarish sacrifices of the American invasion, Japan remains a battlefield.
The leadership of the fanatical junta which ignored the Emperor’s wishes to end the war has been beheaded yet those who have survived remain just as resolute in their ultimate goal, to fight to the last Japanese subject and take as much of the rest of the world with them.
In the second and final part of the 'Decisive Darkness' series, 'Coronet', Paul Hynes details the apocalyptic struggle that the world came so close to in our own time. The fanaticism of the junta is equally matched by the Allies desperation to end the war as quickly and as cleanly as possible in the wake of the mass slaughter portrayed in the series’ previous work, Majestic.
As the Allied commanders prepare for the final strike against the heart of Japan, the capital city of Tokyo, they will learn history’s most horrific lesson.
An enemy with nothing to lose is the most dangerous one of all.
As with the first book, incredible scenario presented that is partly supported by real world plans and events. However, the execution is a bit lacking, I can't help but feel that so much potential of the story is lost due to the perspective of the narrative. Where are the stories of the suicide frogmen and submarines, school classes forced to the front and last ditch efforts and equipment used by the japanese? Personally I found the chapter that detailed the interception of the nuclear-armed B-29 squadron over Matsushiro by the last remenants of the crumbling japanese airforce to be the height of both books. One of the few times the true desperation of the japanese really showed through the writing.
I really liked the alternative end of the Japanese Empire and the new postwar world that was envisioned. Kind of echoed the sentiment that the only place Japanese would be spoken would be in Hell.
Thought the two parts would make a good read. So wrong the author had make it labourious and waffle. Don't bother much better reads about this scenario out there. Only read if you have insomnia.
