For nine months, since a devastating solar flare caused a complete failure of the electrical grid, Shelby Sparks and her diabetic son, Carter, have been living at the ranch of Shelby's high school sweetheart, Max Berkman.
Mostly insulated from the chaos surrounding them, Shelby and Max discover that the Texas government has fled the capitol and is barely maintaining control of the state. The governor needs volunteers to search for the new federal government, but no one knows exactly where it might be located—if it even still exists—or what perils await those brave enough to take on the mission.
Compelled by Carter's desperate need for insulin and their God-given sense of duty, Shelby and Max answer the governor's call and set out on a treacherous 600-mile journey, where they will experience the terrifying effects of unrestrained anarchy. If they have the faith and fortitude necessary to reach their destination, what will they find when they get there?
In this thrilling conclusion to the Remnant trilogy, America is left teetering between total collapse and the dawn of a new and vastly different reality.

Wow what an ending to an incredible series. I kind of wish it was going to be continued but I guess all good things must end eventually. This series and this book is really well written and I just could not put it down. The Remnant Series is definitely worth your time.
It has everything a solar flare, a nuclear bomb, people doing what they want when they want as there is no law and of course total disregard for mankind. It is a time when nothing works. No phones, No computers No nothing. There is total disregard for human life. Disasters tend to bring the best and worst out of people but mainly the worst. All out for number one.
It is seriously the end of the world survival where everything is scarce food, water and medical supplies. People have to live of their wits to get by.
This is not a stand a lone book. In my opinion you need to read the first 2. Enjoy!
Light of Dawn was a great conclusion to this dystopian series! I enjoyed reconnecting with these characters again and seeing how they had continued to adapt to the new reality that they all lived in.
This story had many situations in it that required the characters to decide what the right thing to do was. I appreciated that these characters were better prepared to make these decisions as they faced danger during their travels. They had developed a necessary awareness and understanding of how they new world order worked and what their place in it was. I enjoyed seeing their strengths shine through, yet also watching as they made decisions that others might not make because it was the “right” thing to do for someone.
Light of Dawn had danger, romance, camraderie, and plenty of tension which left me anxiously turning page after page to see how everything worked out! I have enjoyed all of the books in this series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
This third book in the Remnant series is a thriller and a chiller! And definitely not a standalone read. We've collected too many characters and plot twists along the way to make it possible to jump in and start reading in this final installment. But if you have been following Max and Shelby's hair-raising adventures you will be excited to dive into Light of Dawn. An apt title, by the way, as that is what Chapman offers us -- the glimmer of light in a darkly terrifying new world. And she has a scary-vivid imagination as she describes all the trauma and violence that is a given in this post-apocalyptic world.
Definitely a grim read in places but Chapman also weaves a message of faith and hope throughout. There's satisfying romantical conclusions to two long-time-in-the-making love stories. And Shelby's teen son Carter really comes into his own. We are reunited with characters left behind as everyone bands together to take one more impossible journey through a lawless land in search of the new federal government.
The bittersweet ending leaves readers with enough closure in the hope for a very different future for Max and Shelby and all they hold dear. This series has really challenged me ---- I think because it feels so plausible and has me thinking through scenarios and realizing how dependent our society is on technology. Lots of food for thought.
This book is so real and in a way a scary reality, a solar flare, a nuclear bomb, lawlessness, and complete disregard for mankind. The author has us thinking about how we would survive, what we all take for granted, all gone, no more picking up you phone and calling or looking for information, nothing works, and if it did there is nothing to hook up to. Why does disaster bring out the worse in some people, there is so much unnecessary bloodshed, and for what? When we travel to find the Government we discover a lot of hidden secrets, did they know or were they just being prepared. Who is playing God, and yes there are some of his followers left, and I just wanted to stay with them. We are back with friends, some we met in the first book, and yes you want to read them all, they are tremendous, and others we met in the second, and now we are together in the third, the conclusion to this mind thinking series. I wish there was another book to come, I hate to say goodbye, and want to keep up on their lives, and those I have come to love. This is a book that is going to make you think and you will be quickly page turning and then feeling remorse when the last page is turned. I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Harvest House and was not required to give a positive review.
Light of Dawn is the last story in the Remnant Trilogy. Adventure and turmoil continue as the characters fight for survival. Each page is filled with excitement and suspense. This story made me wonder about this world and what would we do if this situation happened. I cheered for the characters, worried for them and cried for them. A thrilling read. I received a copy of this book from the author and Harvest House Publishers and this is my personal honest opinion.
I'm sad to see this series end. It's been a fascinating look at what could happen if a solar flare totally wiped out all modern technology. It's scary to think of the events that happen in the book really happening, but it's a great reminder to be prepared and to always lean on God.
I really appreciated the “Excerpts from Shelby's Journal” at the beginning. It bridged the gap between the end of Raging Storm (book two) and beginning of this one really well.
“We're going to weather this. Together we will find a way.” The first sentence of Light of Dawn and it perfectly captures what, I feel, is the message at the heart of this series... Finding a way through a difficult situation together, with friends, family, neighbors, and most importantly, God.
Chapter One begins nine months after the solar flare. They've had time to get settled at High Fields Ranch and they've started getting used to life with no modern technology. At the behest of Governor Reed, the gang's all back together after agreeing to go on a journey across the country to try and find the missing federal government. Along the way, they meet many interesting people, some good, some bad. My favorites were Dan the music man and Mary Jane and Stu.
There were quite a few times when I was shocked by what happened, when my heart was racing, when I was holding my breath, and wishing I could read faster so I could find out what would happen next as quick as possible.
A couple of my favorite quotes were “Sometimes you do a thing because it's the right thing to do. Not because it makes sense.” and “When you're completely lost, when you have no idea what comes next or why things are happening, faith is what gets you through. Even if you're not sure what you believe, you keep doing the things you know in your heart are the right things.”
I feel like I learned a lot from these books. I hope and pray that the power grid never goes down, that the events in this series never take place in real life, but if it did, I feel better prepared because of these books. I highly recommend this series to everyone!
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my own honest opinion.
Tension, Friendship, Hope. That's what Light of Dawn provides in this epic conclusion of the brilliant series from Chapman. "When you're completely lost, when you have no idea what comes next or why things are happening, faith is what gets you through. Even if you're not sure what you believe, you keep doing the things you know in your heart are the right things. That is faith, Carter. It's not the absence of questions. It's continuing, day in and day out, in spite of those questions."
Loved how the start of the story begins with Shelby's journal entries while capturing exactly how the circumstances feel. There are two things I really wanted to see happen in this book and they both happened! I've decided that the only way to travel in a dystopian setting is to have a military man named Gabe go with you, safest way to be and his loyalty to the group was an enhancement to the story.
One of my favorite parts in the story is when the group decides to do a favor for complete strangers and it turns out these people have valuable information that ends up helping the group in return, I gave a fist pump and said, "Yes!" when reading that part :)
Danger lurks in every chapter but there is not as much violence in this book as the previous ones, enjoyed that also. Really enjoyed meeting the astronauts, felt bad for their situation.
Gus and Hauk were my fave characters along with Gabe, Carter and Lanh. It took me half the story to remember who Lanh was! Will have to read this exciting trilogy once more :)
Did not expect that ending but truly loved how it concluded. Just make sure Shelby gets her daily coffee and the day will go well :) Also loved how after encountering a tornado and Shelby's writer knowledge saves the day how Patrick comments, "Writers rock!" After experiencing Chapman's incredible dystopian trilogy, I wholeheartedly agree :)
I received a complimentary copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my own honest opinion.
Light Of Dawn ( The Remnant Book 3 ) By Vannetta Chapman Light of Dawn is book three and the final installment in The Remnant series by Vannetta Chapman. Wow and WOW, what a series Ms chapman has weaved together. She has did a fantastic job on her research for this series. I have loved all three of these books. They do need to be read in order. This series will grab you right at the start and you will be captured and waiting for the next book to come out. This is it and what a story. The story and the characters both were so real I felt like I was right there with them. This is a series where you are on the edge of your seat and holding your breath to see what is going to happen next. Chapman has me thinking that I need to go out and buy more supplies. A solar flare hit nine months ago and nothing is the same. I worried about Carter and him getting his insulin. There is so much killing, looting, and fires everywhere. Shelby and Max discover that the government needs volunteers to go and search for this new federal government. If there is one , the location is a mystery to everyone. The journey will be long and dangerous. Will Shelby , Max, Carter and their friends survive the dangerous trip ? Is there really a new federal government to be found? This is one series you don't want to miss out on . Be sure and start yours today. I was given a compliment copy of this book by NeGalley and Harvest Publishing House , but was not told that I had to give a positive review.
The third book in The Remnant Series wraps up a course of necessary actions for survival in the throes of a solar flare. The entire electrical grid has been destroyed, leaving people helpless and hopeless. Survival of the fittest can only be accomplished by resourceful and well developed plans of action.
This last book in the series is as powerful as the previous stories leading up to this compelling and complex way of life in a whole new world. Adapting to life after the flare is portrayed realistically and powerfully.
This is an unforgettable and ingenious portrayal of life after the flare that would affect all of humanity in the most paramount manner. I have found myself anticipating how I would react to the situations presented in the event that we are subjected to a horrific event such as this. The northern lights now haunt me! It could happen!
Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book for my reading pleasure, with no expectations for a positive review. All expressed opinions are my own.
Light of Dawn is book 3 and the final book in The Remnant series. Each of the books in this series has kept me up late reading. The trials the group suffered from the beginning continued with this book. This book as in the others in the series causes one to think what you would do if the power grid went out. Could you trust your neighbors enough to band together for the good? Along the way the group of people met good people and not so good people. I liked the ending but it kind of left you wondering. The power grid never did come back on in the story. It left you to wonder what would the people do to rebuild the society.
Thanks to Netgalley and Harvest House Publishers for allowing me to read and review a digital copy of this book. Light of Dawn will be released on July 1, 2017.
Can I rate this book 6 stars? The series is a five star series.
The series starts with a solar flare hitting and the electrical grid going down worldwide. Most of the main characters are introduced in the first book. So you have this journey of a core group experiencing this global catastrophe, and then trying to figure out what to do and how to survive. The survival element in this series started strong, stayed continuous, and led up to a very intense and emotional third book. Although they faced danger and challenges in the first two books and those books were filled with suspense and action, the third book had almost an eerie quality....because the stage was set for the darkness of humanity after a collapsed society to be at a peak and lurking around every corner.
Of all the series I've read, I have never felt such strong emotions at the conclusion of a series! I laughed, cried, held my breath, shouted in relief, and definitely lost sleep over having to read one more chapter to see what happened next with these characters.
The series is clean as far as sexual content and language, did not have scenes with gore, and was definitely faith based. This third book did contain two graphic scenes, but nothing extreme. Absolutely loved this entire series!
Light of Dawn concludes the Remnant Series. I found this book to be an edge of the seat page turner. Vanetta Chapman puts her writing skills to work as she takes readers through a journey with the heroes and heroines of this series that we have come to know as close friends. The goal is to find out if the federal government still exists and if it does where are they? The trip is filled with danger at every turn as our friends set out to find the federal government by request of Texas governor Reed. Determined to get answers they let nothing stop them in their pursuit to locate the Federal government. The story was very well written and kept me riveted chapter by chapter to the end. The way the series has ended made me wonder if there possibly may be more books added at a later date. If you have been following this series you will want to read book 3, Light Of Dawn. You definitely will not be disappointed.

My Review:
Shelby and Max have to come to the states defense but really to the nation and more importantly, the world. Because there is no one else that can do what needs to be done so they step up to the plate and the journey that they undertake seems to be the hardest one of their lives.
Global disasters and any disasters really, can really take a hammer to your faith in God. You will feel that you are a strong Christian and that your faith can never break but take one crisis and everything changes. I something recently, that a crisis will reveal a person's true character. The people of The Remnant series have really shown this to be a true statement.
Sometimes when the government is in charge of things it is scary but in The Remnant series you can get a vastly different image. One that will leave you shocked because the world as we see it in this series is completely different than the world we know now and the thought of this really happening is very scary. Economic collapse leads to our entire downfall as a people and as a nation.
Throughout the series, I felt bad for the characters because we sit there as readers and see them struggling but do nothing. Then I realize I got drawn into another story of Vanetta's--not real life. She is that good of a writer that you feel that this is really happening. Amazing writer and this series is no different!
**Disclosure** This book was sent to me free for my honest review from the author. All opinions are my own.
Light of Dawn by Vannetta Chapman is the third (and the last) book in The Remnant series. Shelby Sparks along with her son, Carter are living at High Fields owned by Max Berkman's parents. Carter slowly recovered from his severe injuries, and they had won the war against the Cavanaughs. Life in a post flare world is not easy, and they live a day to day existence. Max would like his relationship with Shelby to evolve, but she is not ready to let him in. Shelby is concerned about finding more insulin for Carter since his current supply will only last another three months. One day Patrick Goodnight and Bianca Lopez show up at High Fields. They were not expecting them for another three months. Patrick has received a mission from Governor Reed and he would like their assistance. Governor Reed is sending scouts out to every state to locate the federal government which has not been heard from since the flare. Patrick along with Gabe Thompson are heading to Kansas. Max, Shelby, Bianca, Lanh, and Carter agree to go with Patrick and Gabe on this perilous quest. It is a six hundred mile journey between Texas and their destination. It will be fraught will hazards that will test each of them. These seven people will need to be strong in character and faith to complete their quest and return home safely.
Light of Dawn is a well-written novel that captured and held my interest from the very beginning. Light of Dawn is the third book in the series (not including the prequel Overshadowed) and they need to be read in order. Overshadowed sets the stage for what occurs in Deep Shadows. The novels in The Remnant series build upon each other. The story contains characters that are very real. We get to see how they adapt to their new lives while keeping their faith. I give Light of Dawn 5 out of 5 stars. They only thing I wanted to see was Shelby growing/developing over the course of the series (not just at the end of series). She adapted to the new way of life, but she never forgot Carter's need for insulin. I know how important it was for her to keep her son alive and healthy (and they needed the insulin). But it seemed to be her sole focus. I would have started researching homeopathic and Native remedies from the beginning (grab the books before people took them for fuel—smart, but makes me just cringe at the thought). It would have been nice to see the romance between Max and Shelby grow throughout the series. Otherwise, Light of Dawn is well-crafted and leaves the reader thinking how would they handle a situation similar to that in The Remnant series. It makes me want to start stockpiling items (especially toilet paper, chocolate, books and soda). Light of Dawn mentioned some interesting new technologies that I want to investigate further. Vannetta Chapman created a book (actually, a series) that will have people talking!
I haven't read anything by Vanetta Chapman, but the idea of what would happen when the power went out intrigued me. Plus, I have heard rave reviews about this series. The writing was top notch with enough details for me to visualize the setting and the emotions of the characters. As for Shelby and Max, it was nice to see how much faith they had in each other and the strength they had to try to find the Remnant again. The romance between the two came to a head near the end of the novel, and will make, I believe, every romance reader happy. The plot is a totally different thing. While I believe with the power going out and the confusion and death that will occur that Chapman portrayed, I struggled with staying involved with the plot. Not that the world really couldn't turn this harmful. It just didn't capture my attention like I wanted it to. Every moment Shelby and Max were running into someone who could potentially harm them. There really weren't that much down time for the characters to do anything but be on the hunt for something or someone. If you enjoyed this series by Chapman, I highly recommend Terri Blackstock's A Restoration Novel series, with Last Light, Night Light, True Light, and Dawn's Light or Amanda G. Steven's Haven Seeker's Series with Seek and Hide, Found and Lost, Take and Give, and Far and Near. Now these stories captured my attention more.
I received a complimentary copy of Light of Dawn by Vanetta Chapman from Harvest House Publishers, but the opinions stated are all my own.
Honestly, I finished this book a a week ago and I've been struggling with this review. I want more. No, I'm not saying the Light of Dawn was not good; I am saying the exact opposite, I want to read more! Light of Dawn is the final book in The Remnant series by Vannetta Chapman and it was just awesome! A solar flare 9 months ago, has wiped out everything...electricity, cars, computers, heating & air conditioning....everything, its all gone. In the earlier books, we read about the effect this had on the people of the small hill top community in Texas, where they have sought refuge from the chaos that has erupted. In book 3, Shelby and Max have heard rumors that the federal government has fled the capitol, struggling to maintain control on a nation that has been set back hundreds of years. In addition to those rumors, Shelby and Max have also heard rumors that the federal government has set up and the governor of Texas needs a team to head out to find it. Plus, Carter, Shelby's diabetic son will soon run out of insulin; he will die without it. Hop on for the ride as Shelby, Max, Carter, Patrick, Gabe, Bianca and Lanh travel over 600 miles, avoiding bandits, and navigating a destroyed infrastructure in search for new seat of the federal government. Using an older model Mustang, a Dodge and an Army Hemi the team meets each roadblock with their heads up and unparalleled determination. Fast paced and thought provoking. What would you do if something similar really happened? And who are The Remnant? Find out in the last installment of The Remnant Series by Vannetta Chapman
Light of Dawn is an absorbing tale! This series has riveted me from the very beginning, and I quickly became invested in the characters and their journeys. Chapman enthralls readers with a chilling and conceivable story of survival, but even amid danger and despair, faith and hope shine. Light of Dawn is a thrilling conclusion to the Remnant trilogy, and I couldn’t put it down!
The Remnant Series is one I highly recommend reading in order. The prequel novella, Overshadowed, sets the stage for the catastrophic events that occur and subsequent novels continue the dramatic devastation that ensues.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. No review was required, and all thoughts expressed are my own.
It is no secret that Vannetta is one of my all time favorite authors!! Not one of her books has ever disappointed me! This newest book in her Remnant Trilogy , the third and last, is simply marvellous!! Never would I have guessed that I would be reading Dystopian Fiction and loving every moment!! I resisted reading this genre for a very long time, however, when a well known popular author (who I just happen to highly respect and love) , begins a new series, of course, I just had to try it out!! All I can say is , "WOW!" These three books are so realistic and tackle so many believable problems that could easily occur in our lifetime, that I have to admit , they left me deep in thought and yes, even caused some worry and fear. What would I even do if the electrical grid failed?? How would I cope??
The characters are so vividly and realistically described , that I immediately was able to identify with them. I walked their treacherous journey of life, alongside them, feeling every fear, amazement and challenge that they encountered. The underlying theme exhibited how much the little things in life are and become so important. I certainly found myself thankful for the world as it exists in the present. This book could be read as a stand alone, however, I found that it meant much more to me, as I was revisiting my good friends in their troubled world from which I had escaped for a short while.
The plot is packed full of unexpected twists and turns. Never could I presume to know what would happen next in these dear peoples' struggle to survive. The edge of my chair became my reading position, as my heart pounded in fear and anticipation. This third book leaves the reader feeling satisfied and loose ends are tied up. Hope for a brighter future does exist, even in the darkest situations.
I may have completed reading this novel, but the events live on in my innermost being. Should I be preparing for a similar future, stockpiling what I consider the everyday necessities of life??? Or, maybe , I need to prepare my heart for the challenge of carrying on, despite tragedies. Would I have the deep faith that is required to carry on??? I just know that the story made me think very deeply!
A FIVE star book!! DO NOT MISS THIS SERIES!!!
I received this book as a gift. The thoughts and opinions expressed are honest and my own.
Great series. I enjoyed all three books. Though suspenseful and entertaining, full of twists and drama, the series is also a sobering look at what life might be like with a full loss of power.
The author obviously doesn't know, but did a great job on portraying what might be like.
Light of Dawn was a great conclusion to the series. I read it in one sitting, and tbough I enjoyed it and the ending, I was sad to see it end. This series had great characters. I'll miss them all, but especially Max, Shelby, and Carter
Light of Dawn is the third and final book in Vannetta Chapman's The Remnant Series. The first and second books are Deep Shadows and Raging Storm, respectfully.
It has been almost nine months since the devastating solar flare that changed life, as people once knew it. Food and medical supplies are still scarce and people must depend on their instincts in order to survive. There is also no law to punish those who have broken the law by killing and stealing.
After returning home from Austin Texas to seek insulin for her diabetic son Carter, life for Shelby and her son has been pretty much sheltered from the outside world and all the further destruction that has been happening.
Shelby and her boyfriend, Max Berkman, are surprised to find out that the Texas government has left the city of Austin and that they are unable to maintain order. Shelby, Max and their group set out , at the Governor of Texas request, to search for the "new government" that has been set up. Their almost 600 mile journey takes them from Texas to Kansas to find this "new government. which is supposed to be in Flint Hills.
What danger, destruction and hardships will our friends encounter on their journey, since their last trip to Austin. Will the group arrive safe and sound at their destination at Flint Hills and once they arrive will they finally find this "new government."
I really, really enjoyed reading Light of Dawn, and the other two books in The Remnant Series, Deep Shadows, and Raging Storm. Light of Dawn had me turning page after page to see what happens to Shelby, Max and their group, as they made their journey. In fact, I could not put the book down and read it in one day! The characters in this book and the entire series were well developed and I felt as though I was living their journey with them.
I would highly recommend Light of Dawn and also the first two books in The Remnant Series. I was provided with a copy of Light of Dawn by Harvest House and Vannetta Chapman.
First off, a disclaimer before you begin this book...if you have not read the novels preceding this one, you will find yourself struggling to make sense of what is going on. I had to go back and read the premise to this one to gain an understanding of what is happening since the book opens up with journal entries from one of the characters in the book. Light of Dawn is the third novel in the Remnant Series by Vannetta Chapman, and begins around the premise that long ago, people wondered what would happen if a EMP or Solar Flare disrupted the electrical grid in the United States rendering anything that required electricity to run completely useless. This has happened and the details are missing from this novel, unless you have read the previous two novels.
By this time in the novel, quite a bit of time has gone by and the group of rag tag team members that consider themselves like family have been tasked by the governor of Texas to see if there is any form of federal government father north in cities more than 600 miles away. Some heavily populated larger cities rumor has it have been decimated by nuclear bombs and thus the need to know what is out there since all communication is lost. As the team leaves their 'home,' they come across varies people trying to eek out a living wherever they can find it, much like you might expect would happen if such a thing were to truly happen. There is not enough law enforcement or local government to force citizens to remain calm and violence and anarchy are now the rule of the day. Some cities have been taken over by criminals that will shoot first and taken what you have on you after your dead. Others try and help those they can in trade for things that can be bartered. Cash is irrelevant since no one has anything to sell. Their only hope is hoping that the federal government is somewhere attempting to fix what has decimated the world on a global scale.
I received Light of Dawn by Vannetta Chapman compliments of Harvest House Publishers and Net Galley. I absolutely LOVE novels like this, something very realistic, and possibly not that far into our probable futures. It makes you consider what might you do, if your major metropolitan cities were destroyed, all electricity gone, and chaos begins to spawn in the fight for survival. I can't wait to go back to the beginning of this series with the novels, Deep Shadows and Raging Storm to see how this group came to become a family that would fight insurmountable odds just to survive and for me, this one easily garners a 5 out of 5 stars in this reader's opinion. The Author's Note section is extremely informative as the different types of protype technology discussed in the book is currently being used even now. Discussion Guide questions are also included which would make this entire series a great book club selection.
Light of Dawn by Vannetta Chapman is book 3 in the Remnant series. After the solar flare that took down the electrical grid in Deep Shadows (Book 1) and the frantic attempt to find Shelby's diabetic son, Carter, insulin in Raging Storm (Book 2), Light of Dawn has the group looking for the ever missing Federal Government. Texas Governor Reed is sending volunteers out to find help. The federal government has not been heard from in a while but there are rumors they have moved to the middle of the country. That may not be an easy task since the roads, highways and bridges have basically been taken over by gangs or outlaws. There are even rumors a big city area has been nuked. What will the gang find when they leave their part of Texas and wander out farther than the Texas border?
The group lean heavily on their faith in God, but also wonder why this is happening and why God would let good people suffer. One of my favorite quotes in the book is Max talking to Carter...."When you're completely lost, when you have no idea what comes next or why things are happening, faith is what gets you through. Even if you're not sure what you believe, you keep doing the things you know in your heart are the right things. That is faith, Carter. It's not the absence of questions. It's continuing, day in and day out, in spite of those questions."
This series has really made me wonder what would happen if something caused the electrical grid to go down and stay down. Are we prepared to deal with the chaos that is sure to happen? It's something everyone should be prepared for but until it happens, people just don't want to think about. It's just easier to ignore the warnings and continue to believe it would never happen. Vannetta Chapman brings to the forefront questions we should all want answers for. How do we survive without electricity, phones, cars (except the old ones), medical supplies, food, fresh water and the ability to have law and order.
The fast paced action and adventures keep you wanting to read more. The books need to be read as a series and in order. I highly recommend this entire series to everyone. I received this book from Net Galley and this is my honest opinions and views.
My expectations for this final volume of the Remnant series were high - but once again, Vannetta Chapman has exceeded them. The Light of Dawn is satisfying on both emotional and practical levels as a tight band of friends seeks security and direction in a world spinning out of control after a solar flare.
"We are going to weather this. Together, we will find a way." So opens the excerpts from Shelby Sparks' journal, and Georgia's wise words to her are a prophecy fulfilled within the pages of this gripping book. Though they face incredible obstacles (I don't want to give away too much here), their love for each other and their faith in an unchanging God give them the strength to persevere. Max and Shelby's life-long relationship is refined in the fires of this world-wide calamity. And her concern for her diabetic son, Carter, also undergoes a dramatic shift as he matures from boy to man. He has his own crisis of faith which he shares with Max, who wisely mentors him: "When you're completely lost, when you have no idea what comes next or why things are happening, faith is what gets you through....you keep doing the things you know in your heart are the right things. That's faith, Carter. It's not the absence of questions. It's continuing day in and day out, in spite of those questions." Like so many passages in this book, that counsel spoke to my heart (even with an intact electrical grid!).
This book had my heart racing, my eyes tearing up, my hands reaching to pick it up again for "one more chapter" long after I should have gone to bed. Dystopian fiction is not my usual genre, but this series stretched my understanding of what it physically possible/probable, and how I'd like to prepare in reaction to it. Far beyond prepping supplies, I want faithful priorities to motivate my choices in every situation. This series made me examine my view of the world and my place in it - and there's no higher use of fiction, in my mind.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher (I bought the previous books in the series), and I was not required to post a review. Five stars, only because I couldn't find six!
This was a very satisfying end to the Remnant Trilogy. While I felt there were fewer "edge-of-your-seat" moments, it still keept me engaged, and I tried to read it every chance I got. While as in her other books, some of the resolutions came a bit too easy, which is a small price to pay for a pleasant, easy read. I loved how Christian themes were laced throughout the story, without hitting you over the head with them. She tackled the question that each Christian is faced with from time to time: "If God is love, why do bad things happen to good people?". To her credit, she doesn't ever directly answer that question, only suggests that sometimes, you have to take things on faith. With her Amish series books, she put recipes at the end of each book, but for this series, she gave pointers for surviving a solar flare or other natural disaster. The great thing about this particular book is her references to various websites at the end of the book, which answered some of my skeptism about some far-fetched things pepppered throughout this series. Finally, about the author. Most authors who write Amish fiction, usually stick to that genre, or some other similar territory. This cute little Texan, who, on her Facebook page, hosts "prayer Wednesday", and posts pictures of her quilts and deer in her back yard, has taken on some hefty subjects, not only in this series but the Jacob Family series as well. And, after doing the needed research for The Remnant series, it's pretty awesome that she keeps a smile on her face. And that, is said tongue in cheek.
Calling all fans of dystopian fiction, you must read this series by Christian fiction author Vannetta Chapman. You will not be able to stop once you open book one until you have read all three plus the prequel novella.
In book three, Shelby, Max, Bianca and Patrick answer the Texas governor 's call to find the Federal Government that is believed to be in Kansas to see what is being done to rebuild the USA after the solar flare. Will they survive the journey?Who will they meet on the way? Most importantly will they solidify their faith in God?
These books opened my eyes in so many ways. They got me thinking, what would I do in this situation? Could I survive? How strong is my faith in knowing God knows my path in life and I just trust if he takes me to it I will come through it.
I already plan on buying this series for a couple of friends and sharing the excitement I experienced while reading.
Thank you to NetGalley and Harvest House Publishers for an ARC to read and provide a review based on my own honest opinion.
Light Of Dawn is book 3, the last of the Remnant series. I don’t think this works well as a standalone; I recommend reading Deep Shadows and then Raging Storm before starting this one. Because of the length of time between books, and the many books I read between them, some of the details of what went before were a bit fuzzy in my memory. I would have been lost without the other two, and I really think you need them to fully appreciate this book.
Vannetta Chapman crafted a nice trilogy with this series. The books do flow from one to the next and there are some cliffhangers at the end of the first two books. The series gave me a lot to think about, and the plot is certainly something that could happen, if not by solar flare, who knows what may happen to break down our way of life and leave all of us without grocery stores, gas stations or any of the things we count on in life. Obviously this is a subject the author has researched and thought about because so much of what the characters have done, seems so very workable to me. The main characters grew on me as I got to know them and I loved how they interacted and cared for each other.
Light of Dawn is the third and final book in the Remnant Trilogy by Vannetta Chapman. (You do need to read the first and second book in this series to fully understand what has taken place.) Nine months ago, a solar flare took out all of technology and ended the world as we know it today. Shelby and her crew have found a way to live out their faith in spite of what has taken place in the world around them. Now their faith is about to be tested again. This time the governor has asked the group to venture out of Texas in search of the National Government. Overcoming obstacles, facing off with those intent on killing for the fun of it, and facing tests of their own faith, each member of Shelby's crew has to contend with all that has happened and find their own place in this new society. More than what is just what is happening in this dysotopian future, this book shows the true meaning of friendship, love, and faith. "When you're completely lost, when you have no idea what comes next or why things are happening, faith is what gets you through. Even if you're not sure what you believe, you keep doing the things you know in your heart are the right things. That is faith, Carter. It's not the absence of questions. It's continuing, day in and day out, in spite of those questions." This quote says it all. Chapman has done a fantastic job of weaving together believable and lovable characters with a sense of hope and faith in a very scary "what if" scenario! I absolutely loved this series and read everyone of the books in one or two sittings! This series often had me on the edge of my seat wondering how the characters will survive and I am sad to see it end. If you haven't checked out Vannetta Chapman, you really must do so! She is a prolific author who revels in researching and producing viable, conflict-driven, and sometimes out-right scary dysotopian fiction as well as believable and enduring Amish fiction!
LIGHT OF DAWN byVannetta Chapman the 3rd and Last in her Remnant series. Once again the author has pulled us into a thriller plot, and one can ask what would one do, and how far was the limit. An electrical grid failed 9 months ago, having the capital fleeing. They are asking for volunteers, could one do it. Shelby has a diabetic son, needed insulin, a high school interest, Max, feels this is what needs to be done. The story takes one on a 600 mile trek to the capital, and the troubles seems endless . When the need for the insulin and trying to do the right thing. This captures you from the first, and won't disappoint readers. Given book by Net Galley for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.
This book is the last story in The Remnant series. I had not read the others that came before it, but I feel like it was entirely readable and understandable without reading the previous books. It grabbed me from the opening lines of Shelby’s journal. A solar flare has changed the world of technology and even electricity to a thing of the past. The dystopian society that is evolving is scary and somewhat predictable when one understands human nature. The writing was excellent and imminently readable. It was quite thought-provoking as I wondered just exactly what I would do if faced with no electricity and technology and worthless paper money.
Thanks to Net Galley for a review copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
