Meena: The Fiery Story of a Heroine's Initiation

Rate this book
M and Meena journey through the heavenly existence that once was, and the hell it became, riding the waves of transformation through the light and shadow of death and rebirth. Their multi-dimensional reality allows them to receive guidance, wisdom, and healing from the natural world, as they embrace their symbiotic relationship with the Great Mother. Through her guidance they discover their authentic sexual nature, love, sisterhood, belonging—and the consequences of feeling cut off from her.

“Mary Lane has crafted a beautiful tale, weaving the ancient times when women were revered for their wisdom, healing and priestessing roles, to a modern day woman, seeking her purpose. We recognize ourselves in this story of Meena, as she rebels, resists, and discovers her path, which parallels the older story of a priestess’s journey to accept her leadership role in the community.  It's a message for today’s women to lean into that role of priestess/spiritual leader, however that may look for each of us.” Kris Steinnes, founder ~ Women of Wisdom Foundation ~ Author of the award winning book -Women of Wisdom, Empowering the Dreams and Spirit of Women
“Mary Lane holds us captive from the first word to the last as the story reassembles a shattered mirror of remembering for our souls. I dare say it was magical to feel my own body/heart as I read it. The juxtaposing of these feminine tales in time and place offer us a chalice to drink from and be transformed by. Thank you, Mary, for listening deeply enough, and for luring us back into our innate Earth wisdom and feminine ways of health, beauty, and relationality.”  ~ Jade Sherer, nature-based soul guide

“A page-turning powerhouse — destined to be a movie. Meena will grip you and take you on a journey of cosmic proportion. Mary Lane’s description of a life lived in harmony with the natural world, and the union of a fully realized male and female, is breathtaking. It wakes up a part of us that needs to remember this possibility. This book took me to my core and touched a deep longing for connection.” ~ Amara Pagano, founder ~ Azul Conscious Movement

“Mary Lane clearly draws from her personal experience as a plant spirit healer and shaman, as she presents a portrait of loss of soul and its recovery. She weaves a gripping tale which balances interesting and vivid details with the big picture of why we are all here on this planet. Among the many quotable passages in the book, my favorite is ‘The door was opened by the unsuspecting gatekeepers who had come for their own healing.’" ~ Robert K Dubiel ~ past-life regressionist and author of The Practical Shaman

A powerful and provocative story of healing and rebirth that needs to be shared

It is difficult to know where to begin writing this review as I have never read a book like this before. While I have read many others in this genre, none approaches the levels of authenticity and depths of healing that Meena proffers. What immediately grabbed me is the author’s unique handling of ritual; for a work of fiction, there is a profound intimacy in the language, devoid of pretense, that leaves no doubt that Mary Lane has genuinely lived the life of a Medicine Woman.

This is a novel that seamlessly integrates the mystical and the natural, the sacred and the profane, the timelessly universal and the painfully familiar, within two parallel yet wildly disparate journeys. It variously smacks you in the head and punches you in the gut -- all in a voice that is entertaining and effortless to read -- and at the end of the turbulent ride lands you softly and safely in your heart, knowing deeply that a powerful lesson has been shared, and an important directive issued.

And when those two journeys are ultimately intertwined, we are rewarded not only with resolution but with redemption. We are shown that simply to end suffering is not enough for true healing of core wounds to take place, in ourselves or our world; for such healing to take place suffering must be transmuted. And while masculine appropriation of strength may be adequate to terminate pain, it is only by virtue of our feminine creative energies that rebirth is made possible.

Meena serves as a mirror and a microscope for reflecting and magnifying our own lives and psyches. Even as a man reading this book, I felt a deep kinship with the heroine, who illuminates integral feminine aspects of the human spirit that too many men have lost touch with in themselves. As Meena’s stories illustrate, the warrior ethos and the energies of nurturing are not mutually exclusive but must in fact come together as one in order for true healing to take place. This book not only honors the strength of women but invites men to reunite with their own feminine divinity. For men to live only in the masculine perpetuates a grievous wound to the foundation of humanity. And as Meena asks us, “Would you want to go through your entire life without your virtues being known?”

Author Mary Lane has gifted us with an heroic model of healing and rebirth that is sorely, desperately needed in today’s world. Read it and let it awaken the fire within you. Share it, and help to ignite the world around you.
