Some recent publications have thrown further light on the life of Rousseau, and of these I have made use. A brochure, edited by Professor E. Ritter ('la Famille de Jean Documents ine'dits.' Geneva, supplies several details of family history, and corrects several errors in the earliest part of the 'confessions,' which was written from memory not unaided by imagina.
