Someone once said write what you love to read. So, I asked myself, “What do you love reading?”

As a fan of fast pace stories, I don’t want to get bored while waiting for a story to build up. I need a story that can keep me entertained until that climax arrives. If I can figure out the ending before the story ends, I’m easily turned off. The dialogue must be unpredictable, an intriguing story that satisfies my urge to continue.

I love that feeling of realizing exactly when the character falls in love. Writings like that is an art of beauty. And when I hate the villains who have scarred my favorite character with pain, I know then that the story has me in its grips.

These characteristics make up a great story. It’s what I write to engage the emotions of my readers. Narratives that give them permission to loath my characters. I want them to laugh so loud, that others around them will question the reason why.

My stories are suspenseful and powered by thought-triggering dialogues because I want to leave my readers’ imagination lingering on what they’ve read long past the pages of my books.

I honestly don't know where to start with this review. The first word that comes to my mind when describing this story is "scandalous!" In the beginning I absolutely loathed some of mamas six children. Their characters seemed so uncaring, selfish, brazen, and cold. The lack of genuine feeling for their mother pounced off the pages and right into my judgmental mind. How dare they treat their mother that way!' Especially, in her grievous state'! I thought. I even wrestled with whether I would give this a four star rating or five, based solely on my dislike of some of the characters. But then as the author began to unfold the back stories, as well as current stories of all six children and mamas past, my feelings began to change. I must say that the author caught me by surprise with mamas secret. I really didn't see that one coming! I was also particularly intrigued with the affair between Audrey and B.J. After reading Audrey's story, I couldn't help but inwardly cheer her on! By the end I'd pardoned her of her affair and ruled her actions as "justified behavior" If you like suspenseful, high drama, no- fluff reads, than this story is a great pick! Looking forward to reading the next in the series.

The Matriarch (Momma) is on her deathbed and unaware of what chaos transpires around her. A secret stash of money is thought to be hidden away and the family comes closer seeking an answer to their problems with a potential financial windfall, while they openly offer their perspective into the dymanics of who this woman is to them and who she is not.

Imperfection in family relationships, blame for another for things that are within our grasp and vindication comes into play. There are a host of needful characters that entertain you, as her children and her preacher come to pay respects. This gave it a very southern feel for me, which added yet another element to enjoy. The majority of the novel plays out in the ICU or the hospital waiting room, which I totally loved! I was remind more than once of the addictive and dramatic soap opera style writing of the 80s.

The individual adult children get their own place to explore what it means to be a family, the struggle behind living up to expectations and the front we place amongst our families and our beleif systems to jocky for poisition. The subtext of life on the street and the price of doing business within that culture is also explored.

Audrey became the character I identified with for many reasons. She is a go-getter, a professional woman raising her son with a man who cheated and disrespected her as a wife, then the personal fallout from staying with him once she knows what he is. In a suprising segment, she rises to a moment of self-preservation. When offering her empathy to a handsome stranger, Audrey gives herself what she needs.

It is written with dialogue that is real, down to earth and the scenes with the outsider, the sassy, diva girlfriend, Ola’Ash’Sharonika shows misplaced anger at anyone who dares to come in between a family that is certainly struggling, but in the end shows that, blood is thicker than water. Her growth in the text was a treat and her logical, honest approach to life was adeptly shown in how others responded to her later on in the story.

I recommend this book to women who enjoy high-drama, understanding family dynamics and snappy, honest dialogue. My mental image below of the beautiful and fashion forward , Ola’Ash’Sharonika.

What's Next For Mama's Children?

Though the book dragged a bit, I still want to see what happens next.

So I purchased Book Two of this trilogy to see what happens next!

Mama was a real sinner, it seems. I like how the author penned the ending to this first book, laying out Mama's sins... Ingeniously!
