A book published when Ramsey was still alive in 1998 .The book is a solid account of the only manager to lead England to World Cup victory . I was aware pf him being England manager when I was growing up . I enjoyed the early part of the book on the basis I only had a rough idea of his career as Ipswich Manager and his playing days . I was familiar with the three key games which are used to illustrate his career as England Manager (4-2 Victory against Germany , 3-2 Defeat to Germany and 1-1 draw with Poland leading to failure to qualify for the 1974 World Cup ) and this not add a great deal .
Solid biography ,however you get the feel this is a desk top exercise pulling together existing pubic domain materials . There appears to be no attempt interview Ramsey and we learn very little as to his inner thoughts .In addition when discussing the 1970 defeat he laments the presses lack of perspective stating "It allegedly cost Labour the General Election , setting in motion the chain of events that would take Thatcher to the premiership - now that's a tragedy". Strange this is completely out of context with the rest of the book and seemed irrelevant . All I can remember is that in 1970 as a ten year I was far more emotionally scarred by the England defeat .
Also one can find much more on Ramseys later years and private life/health by reading the Wikipedia page on him
