Thomas Ripley lived in Tacoma, Washington in its heyday, when it was the major city in Washington, when Seattle called the mountain Mount Rainier and Tacomans called it Mount Tacoma (after the Indian name for the mountain, which was Tahoma). He recounts the rising prospects of Tacoma and the depression that came in the late 1800s, which he believed to be worse than the 1929 Depression.
