In my past life I hadn’t had anyone I would have given my life to protect. I had that now, but I didn’t have the strength to protect them—not against what was about to come.

In another life, Arthur Leywin was a king and no stranger to war. He was not ready, however, to find himself at the heart of a conflict that will reshape his entire new world. Despite his abilities, it seems as if the danger only increases with every discovery he makes. His oldest friend succumbs to a power that may destroy her, a power Arthur gave her. His most constant foe accepts a dark gift to challenge Arthur’s strength, an act that threatens all of Xyrus Academy. How can he keep his family safe if his very presence is the thing that draws danger to them? Can he dispel the specters of war before it is too late?

*Huge* disappointment. Almost insultingly bad.

Do you want to read a short book with no action until the last act, only to be trolled by a Bad End cliffhanger?
Are you tired of everything cool in the last few books, and ready to dive into highschool romantic drama and poorly written political conspiracies?
Are you ready for unexplained rocketing power levels and the meaningless deaths of side characters to show how bad the bad guys are?
Are you ready for this series to turn into a crappy anime?
If so, man, this is the book for you!

If that doesn't sound like it's up your alley, don't buy this book. It's short, boring and badly written.

I kept waiting for the book to pick up like the last three did, but all of a sudden it's the end and I feel robbed. At least a third, possibly half, of this book was filler that served no purpose in advancing the plot, building the characters, or even offering entertainment.
As a fan who was looking forward to this book, I am *deeply* disappointed.

These two books 3-4 went down hill pretty fast, the MC turns into some drooling idiot that can't think and make rational decisions. the only thing good about the Books is that Travis is doing the VO work.

Horizon's Edge was a truly uneven book with unearned revelations in the form of lots of information dumps. After nearly an entire book of people winking instead of any other subtle gesture, the end of the book becomes brutal. Lots of events just seem to happen out of nowhere. I have little idea where the series heads next after the cliffhanger, outside of lots of winks. Everyone loves to wink.

I was enjoying this series, but lately the direction it has been taking is a bit cliché for my tastes. I also don't understand why Arthur likes Tessia, yeah she's not bad...but in no way do I think she is the girl for him or that his feeling for her are real and valid. I feel like Tessia just forced her feelings down his throat when she kissed him, and manipulated him by crying later on when he sorta rejected her. Since Arthur does have his memories from his past life, I honestly can't see them together. Mentally he is a 50 year old, and she--when she confessed--was 13 (and he was physically 12). Arthur's reasoning for not liking her back romantically was valid, but then Tessia started yelling at him, saying that he was making excuses, and she kind of brainwashed him into believing that? Besides their mentalities and emotions, their personalities do not go well together at all. Honestly, the way the author wrote it in the last volume, it made it seem like the only reason Arthur felt conflicted about his relationship with Tessia was because of his pubescent body and hormones--other than that, besides being childhood friends, it didn't seem like he liked her at all. I was half expecting some kind of development in the future where Arthur confesses to Tessia that he doesn't like her that way, and that she is too different, and basically forced the feelings into him, but this volume makes it seem like he's suddenly in love with her, but denying it to himself??? It suddenly feels like everything revolves around Tessia, but if this was real life, I wouldn't be surprised if Arthur fell in love with someone else when he gets older (someone on par with him mentally, and emotionally, and whose personality matches with his--and someone he didn't know as a kid, since he was never really a kid in this world). I would love it if this series took that direction. I remember in the past, when Lilia had a crush on Arthur, Arthur told Gideon that she didn't really like him, but felt gratitude towards him and saw him as her savior and got the emotions all mixed up ----> but that is exactly what happened with Tessia. He saved her, he was her first friend, he saves her again like ten million times, yet somehow Lilia's feeling's weren't real and Tess's were. Honestly Tess seems to be more obsessed with Arthur than in love, and trust me, I have personally seen people in obsession versus people in love.

Annoying storytelling

Too many long POV changes taking us from main character, useless foreshadowing information overload, and upsetting cliffhanger as soon as the story finally starts.

This is the last one for me.

Well I liked the series up to this point but this is the last one I'll read. I was on the fence until I read reviews for the next one and well that settles it. Considering the MC is at least 50-60 and was king etc he doesn't get to make the illogical decisions he starts to make this book. It seemed like it was just excuses to push the story in a certain way. It could of been done better and more enjoyable....but I don't want to read a story that is just frustrating.

The author lost all of his imagination.

90% of this book was a rip off from different Japanese animes. Even the end was totally predictable and quite stupid. There is the classic appearing out of nowhere for no particular reason with no explanation. There was the classic let’s split up even though there might be some danger.

Not worth it

The first and second books were actually quite enjoyable even if they had some holes and some times required some mental gymnastics. However, the 3rd and 4th books are not worth it at ALL.

POV party bleh

POV for me, POV for you, POV for everyone! This book drove me crazy. There were literally over a dozen POVs bouncing back and forth. I had to force myself to finish the book. Which was sucky because I have loved this series so far. It really took the pacing and immersion the book had and brought it to a complete halt. No Bueno!

The story is just getting better and better. I might have the same review on the previous books but I said what I said. This book trumps the previous book and I’m sure the next book will, too.

I've enjoyed the story and characters less and less after each book. I'm really over the over the top MC and all the gross kid love vibes and dont plan on picking up anything written by the author again.

Notes:

3.5 Stars Round Up for Great Narration by Travis Baldree

#3 & 4 are bundled together in the audiobook. #3 was a great setup for the events in #4. This concludes a story arc and sets the stage for #5.

Stupidly over powered villains

Can't stand the heroes living because of dumb luck against stupidity overpowered villains? Then skip this book. I really enjoyed the series till I got this one. I ended up skimming the last third of this book, as it wasn't worth reading. Will still go on with the series, but it was a close not worth buying choice.

The problem with TurtleMe and The Beginning After The End is that it's so incredibly amazing that everything else seems mediocre by comparison after reading. Just please put out another audiobook set soon!

Disappointed

I enjoyed the first books better. There are way to many point of view changes for my taste. I feel this happens a lot as some stories progress. I want to read about the MC not all about the other characters. I'm done with this series.

Angry face emoji is how I feel about this book
I wish I'd know how bad this series would get, and how suddenly it would collapse.
It's worse when a series starts out good and then turns to sh*t, than if it had been bad all along.
In books 1 & 2 this was an interesting (if not terribly original) ideal done well. What if you could start life over as a child, but with all the knowledge and experience you have now. That's a fantasy scenario you can do a million times and still find something new to say each time, and it's near to my heart.
-And then WHAM! that second chance at life premise gets jettisoned for the cliche Magical Academy genre, and not even done well.
In this disappointing installment that Magical Academy trope takes a second drop by turning Arthur into a angsty teen, and not the reincarnated man he was in all the preceding books. (Oh God AND the chosen one on top of everything else)
-One of my very biggest pet peeves is when the writer suddenly and conveniently makes an intelligent character into a doofus just so they will do a stupid thing, or make an idiotic choice that will advance the plot in the most artificial & melodramatic way.
This book seriously needs to tone it down A LOT. From rational people making calculated choices to overwrought melodrama where everyone is chewing the scenery and standing exactly on the X painted on the ground without looking up first.
-Huge case in point is the "Draco Malfoy" antagonist in this Magical Academy. In book 3 he was an arrogant, snooty, opportunist who would stand by as you got hurt or killed. That's bad enough, but in book 4 he is an unhinged psychopath who wants to kill and torture. WTF? And none of the teachers or other students notice when he shouts death threats in the hallway? This doesn't make the book better at all. This doesn't add tension or raise the stakes. It destroys all credibility and shatters suspension of disbelief because I stop reading to wonder what's going on with the author.
-Seriously, I spent more time wondering about what was driving TURTLEME's choices than any of the characters in the book. The leading theory is that they just ran out of ideas and couldn't keep up with the pace of writing that good and had to resort to tired hackneyed old tricks instead of maintaining the standards they set out in book 1.
...And yet I'm invested in these characters. I care what happens to them even though they've all lost a hundred IQ points. I kinda wish I'd never started but I did, and now I'm struggling to go on with what's left.

Worst edition so far, The story became weak and very fragmented.

Book for was a disappointment. The pace of the story was ruined as the author tried to interject multiple points of view throughout the entire book, overlapping scenes creating a redundant, boring, and unnecessary expose of events we just read about.
The main character is constantly being challenged only when it fits the story narrative and not in any logical and plot way. The authors introduced quite a bit of world-building in the plot line that makes the main character seem weak after building them up for 3 books. The story leaves off at a complete Injustice by showing that the main character has no agency and puts himself in a situation with no logical explanation or reason for doing it. The author tried to create the ending based on the main character's emotion, but it felt as if the main character was changed solely to fit the plot line and had no value as part of the story. I don't know if I feel like even reading anymore because this was so awful to read. It remains a simple story that was at least fun and engaging but this book took that away. It became a slogfest with supporting cast characters taking away agency and any credibility of the main character. A bad addition to the series. Hard to recommend the series after this book.

Didn't like it as much as the first 3 books. Art didn't really progress. We learn more about what is going on in the world and why things are happening. Not much happened until the end of the book and then it was kind of depressing for a while.

I honestly can't say I liked the "big reveal" and the endless power scaling that seems to occur every other minute of this series. Everyone is 10x stronger than the last introduced character, just for them to show off, be aggressive, let the author write "antagonists makes insanely bad and very unrealistic actions against main character, so the reader gets invested" and see them get beaten a few seconds later, as another 10x power characters shows up.
.
*spoilers below*
.

Especially with the entire council, everyone on the council was portrayed as this extremely powerful person, and apparently they are all, immediately, scheming, without even having a proper introduction.
Everyone is unrealistically emotional and low intelligence, hates on the main character, to make us dislike them as much as possible. Just, for the same old, same old, to happen. Several 10x strong characters appear, and the horribly written, short lived antagonists, disappear from the entire story.

4/5 If the first half was as good as the second it would have hit 5 for sure. Still a lot of exciting stuff. And the last few chapters are awesome. Warning though we’re ending this one on a bit of a cliffhanger.

This is starting to turn into Harry Potter where all the children need to solve the world's problems. The elitism is laid on a bit thick and the ending is absolutely proposterous. I'll give the series one more try, but I think I'm done.

This book shows why its so important not to gloss over the pesky little things like taking the time to set up your story correctly. I know it can be boring to do the build up at times and authors are impatient to get to the really cool stuff in their stories, but it’s so vital because it means that when the important stuff starts to happen in your story, all of the important supporting information has been drip fed to your readers in a way they can digest rather than throwing it all at them in massive info dumps at the last minute.

Reading this book was a bit like watching that Architect scene in Matrix reloaded. There is loads of stuff being thrown at you a mile a minute while you just sit there blinking and asking, “Wait, what?”

That confusion carries over into other elements of the plot as suddenly there is a rebellion of sorts within the kingdom that seems to have come from nowhere, really powerful and dangerous enemies from another continent turning up out of the blue, and so much more. Essentially, it’s like the author said, “Right, we’ve had our fun now guys. It’s time to get to the meat of this story all at once.”

The worst part about this is that I actually like all the ideas in this book; it just took me by surprise as it could have been handled a lot better. With things playing out as they did, it almost felt like I was reading a book from a different series here.

One other flaw is that the author finally starts addressing how awkward it is to have this man in a child's body in some scenes. This is super awkward and shows that this is a problem that should have been addressed long before now.

I’m rounding up to 3-stars because overall I like this book and am willing to give it the benefit of the doubt, however, I am a little nervous about starting the next book. I hope this was a one-off and not the start of a downward trend.

Disillusioned

The first 3 books had me cheerful because the main character was ethical and honorable. The 4th book ended in a bloody massacre, the him turning into a Sadistic Torturer, and justice was busted to bits.
I want to throw up. I wish I had never bought this trash. TYPICAL DEMONIC EXCREMENT! Did all the good uplifting entertaining authors go extinct?
Do better KINDLE. I tire of sifting through your filth for any writing genuinely worth human consumption!
Doesn't the reading world deserve better?
I WANT A REFUND FOR THE 4TH BOOK!

Lame ending

I was thoroughly enjoying this series...up until the way this book ended. I'm all for cliff hangers, but the way you had Art treated at the end would never happen in any world with all the witnesses to Lucas' actions. Not sure that I will spend any more money to continue this series.

I guess I'll stop here. This fantasy book plot has degraded to banale:
- Anti racism
- Anti school bullying
- Anti sexism, etc.
Cardboard villains and overpowered but emotionally unstable heroes.
The plot had some potential. But it's the fourth book and the story is getting more and more simplistic.
