Grace Baron had always been the good wife, in spite of a marriage based on a careless indiscretion, and sustained not by love, but by old-fashioned morality. She’d raised her daughter, bit her tongue, and silently lived with her guilt. Now that she’s a widow, she can’t help being glad for her sudden freedom. She’d never live her life like that again. Without a sense of control. Without deliberately making a choice about her future. And that future would never involve getting married again.
Small town lawyer Howard Scott has buried two wives. His steadfast belief that it’s never too late to find true love keeps him open to whatever joy life has to offer. He doesn’t want another socialite wife. This time he wants a hometown girl. Someone stable, maybe a little naïve, but feisty enough to keep him on his toes. Someone like Grace Baron.
Howard’s gentle, old-fashioned courting makes Grace feel alive again. Would marrying Howard be the trap Grace fears, or would it finally give her a kind of freedom she’d never imagined?
Whether it is the Bluegrass of Kentucky, the mountains of Montana, or Medieval England, Jan Scarbrough brings you home with romances from the heart.
The author of two popular Bluegrass romance series, Jan writes heartwarming contemporary stories about home and family, single moms and children, and if the plot allows, about another passion—horses. Living in the horse country of Kentucky makes it easy for Jan to add small town, Southern charm to her books and the excitement of a Bluegrass horse race or a competitive horse show.
The Ghost Mountain Ranch series is a contemporary western series with a good blend of mystery and happily-ever-after romance. The Dawsons of Montana is another four-book contemporary western series.
Jan leaves her contemporary voice behind with two paranormal gothic romances, Timeless and Tangled Memories, a Romance Writers of America (RWA) Golden Heart finalist. Her historical romance, My Lord Raven, is a medieval story of honor and betrayal.
Jan holds a M.A. in English from Western Kentucky University. A member of Novelist, Inc., Jan self-publishes her books.
Grace is 58; Howard is 66. They meet at a grief support group as their spouses have died. Grace married because she felt guilty and felt that she had to; Howard married twice to women who were not his true loves. This was their chance to fall in love.
I enjoyed the simplicity of the short story and how it sets up a hopeful reconciliation between Grace and her daughter. I enjoyed how Grace blossomed from insecure and hiding to a woman who was sure of herself and what she wanted in a relationship. I got an idea of how unhappy her previous marriage was and finally it was revealed why it happened. Howard was the gentleman that she did not know that she wanted. Sometimes it takes years and lots of life experience to get love right.
This story proves that you are never too old for romance and true love if you are willing to try again. I will be reading the rest of the series because this one was so good. My only complaint is that I wish it was longer because I felt that there were some interesting side characters, including her friend Judy, that were worth exploring as well as spending more time with Grace and Howard.
This is the first book in this series. Here is a woman who endured a difficult marriage until her husband died. This is not the typical second chance story. But her first time at real love. She is in her sixties and is afraid to take that big step again. But he sees her as someone he could love to the end. His first two marriages left him a lonely widow. Both wives were social butterflies. This time he is looking for a woman who loves the quiet life. Will she remain single or will he be able to show her how a living relationship can be?
Opening for a series about a fractured family's parts. Grace is a widow not mourning her husband. They had married for the wrong reason and she had paid for it, as had her daughter. The last thing on her mind was a relationship with a man, but it happens. Howard is a lawyer, twice a widower, who does not fear marrying again. Grace comes to understand why.
Second chances of finding true love when you are older. Grace was married to N awful man with no ambition and he passes she needs to find her way. Howard is a lawyer & widow also. And they meet at a group for widows. Can they work.
This is a lovely short story about a widow who's determined never to marry again, and a widower who's determined to change her mind. Grace suffered through a long marriage full of emotional abuse and wants nothing more than to live her own life. But Howard offers so much more. He's strong, handsome, and it doesn't hurt that he's wealthy. But what makes him real hero material is that he's willing to let Grace call the shots in their relationship, and he loves her for herself. Can't wait to read Book 2!
An excellent second chance romance from Ms. Scarbrough! Widower Howard, a small town lawyer and racehorse owner, and Grace, a widow enjoying freedom for the first time since her husband’s death, meet during a grief support group session. Howard and Grace, both in their early 60’s, tread carefully, but positively, through their memories and go forward with new experiences and their desires for each other. I thank the author for gifting me with a copy of this lovely little story!
