When President Abraham Lincoln chose to keep the union together rather than wage civil war over slavery, he put America on a very different path, leading to a future where slavery still existed on earth—and on the planets earth had conquered...
In that grim future, an experiment in time travel technology goes terribly wrong, creating a biological shape-shifting monster known as the Proteus.
Frank Deadeye, a free African American lawman, has dedicated his life to hunting down the beast. His primary a prosthesis quantum-microprocessor ring-bot that communicates with his brain by nerve induction. Fusing his consciousness with the bot’s data and analysis, Frank can perform superhuman feats. He’s been known to dodge bullets. Hell, he’s been known to catch them.
But when the Proteus escapes, Frank needs to draw on all his training, all his strength, and all his courage. Because not only is the Proteus a living nightmare—sadistically violent and virtually indestructible—but the monster has escaped into a territory more wild and dangerous than any Frank has the past.
I really enjoyed this science fiction-horror-western. That may sound like an unusual combination of genres (oh, and add historical fiction too) but it works very well. A marshall from the future travels back in time to the turbulent days before the Civil War to catch a genetically-mutated killer, all of which is complicated by the fact that the marshall is African American. It's at the same time thought provoking, suspenseful, and fun.
A marshal on a far away planet hunts an ancient evil and ends up in the 19th century. I am not sure how to classify this book: it is science fiction, Western, alternative history (because 'counterfactual' sounds pretentious), horror. I don't think it is a book for everyone, but I had a great time reading it. If you can suspend belief and maintain an open mind, you just may like this book, too.
Sci-fi, time-travel, alternate history, horror and western—all blended into one novel! The action is nicely balanced with history and character, and the Proteus is a truly horrific monster. I haven't had this much fun since reading my Doc Savage pulps. This would make an astounding movie as well, with a strong actor like Denzel Washington or Chiwetel Ejiofor as the flawed but heroic lead.
