I had a rather short area here telling a little about me but then I had more than a few people ask me to expand it so... here goes. LOL. I'm a full time home 'supervisor' which is a nice word for saying I'm a housewife. I'm married happily, I met my dream guy 20 years ago, and we have 4 children. I live in Southern California and I can't function without iced coffee. I believe in romance, I've always been a daydreamer, and I'm a HUGE fan of books, always have been.

No, I didn't know that I always wanted to write. I inhaled books as a child. I read entire series (Pippi Longstocking, Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys, Trixie Beldon, The Borrowers, etc) in a matter of days at a time. By the time I was nine years old I had an adult library card where I visited often. I moved on to John Saul, Stephen King, Richard Laymon, Agatha Christie, and then found romance. I was hooked. I wrote poetry in my teens and then moved on to short stories. My first book was started after I read a real bomb of a book that ticked me off with really horrible characters and a plot that was shabby at best and I thought... I could do better. LOL.

I wrote my first book which will probably never see the light of day in the early 90's. I wrote a series of a few books from it. I'm a series fan! I kept writing for fun, wrote MANY books and then in 2009 I decided to try to get published. I wrote my first Sci Fi romance and Ral's Woman came to be. I submitted it and with a little tweaking, Ellorascave sent me an acceptance letter. It was kind of a 'Cinderella' experience for me. It's been a terrific ride so far and I'm really happy that I finally had the time to commit to writing full time. It's a dream come true.

Can I first express my dislike for all of these book covers? I mean, come on!! The last book had a naked guy in a kilt. None of the New Species wear kilts. Why? Don't get me wrong, I love a guy in a kilt. They are kiltalicious! But, it isn't appropriate for this series. And, this one isn't much better. It looks like a guy getting ready for a rectal exam or something.

Anyway, I need to get this review out there so everyone will quickly forget my last review that was an unpopular opinion piece. That brick through the window was totally uncalled for ladies! You know who you are!

You are right, Sophisticated Cat! Maybe a bullet proof house....

So, in this book, we have Brawn, a New Species that has just been assigned to work with the human task force that finds and frees other New Species who are still being held captive; and Becca, the daughter of the leader of the task force. The leader of the task force is named Tim and he showed us what an asshat he is in the last book when he treated Jessie like a 5 year old girl instead of the kickass warrior that she was. (Yes, I said "was". I know, I know.)

Asshat Tim decided to give Brawn his daughter's house to live in and have her move back home. He is such an asshat. But, Becca wasn't taking that crap (good for her!) and said that Brawn could stay in her guest room instead.

Becca had never met a New Species and has many curious questions about him. Starting with his cat-like eyes:

"Can you see colors and everything?"

"Yes, my vision is perfect."

"My dad thinks you are mixed with a lion or panther. Do you have a tail?...... It's okay if you have one. I'd still think you were hot."

Hahaha! Well, we know from our Big Blue Aliens that a tail is definitely not a deal-breaker, don't we girls? But, still, I would think that a tail would be pretty obvious and probably not easy to hide in a pair of jeans. Unless it is a little hamster tail. Aren't hamsters the cutest with their little tiny tails?

Let's face it, these tails wouldn't be a deal breaker either...

Okay, sorry I digressed...
The very first night of their new roommate status, they get kidnapped and locked in a cage together. Like hamsters! But, without an exercise wheel. Aren't hamsters cute when they run on those things?

Okay, I swear I'll get off the hamster thing now!

During their captivity, Brawn and Becca have sex in their cage because there is nothing more romantic than cage-sex. Am I right? The lovely aroma of a feces-bucket, the comfort of a tiny cot, the fun of having cameras on them and other captives being tortured right next to them... Reminds me of my honeymoon.

After they are rescued, a lot of people, including Daddy Dearest come in and separate these two love-hamsters. And, they all lie and scheme and keep them apart.

Here's the thing, though. One conversation between these two would have spared us them half a book's worth of misunderstanding and angst. But, noooo! It's all angstedy angst angst. Ugh!

And, of course, all of these books have the HEA, so we are pretty sure it's going to end up fine. And, it does. The end.

4 Baby's mama drama Stars

*Spoilers*

“I like directness too. I did take it wrong at first and mentally agreed it would be a tight fit. You’re small. For a second, as I admired your bent form, I forgot why I’d never touch a human female and I growled in appreciation. My kind do that when we’re aroused. You have a nice form.”

Brawn is the 5th book in the New Species Series and it is chock full of dramatic goodness. Brawn is the new member of the task force team that becca's father leads. He has never wanted to be with a human to share sex, they are too soft and breakable, and he likes his sex rough. He meets Becca and is very attracted to her, but plans to be good and keep his hands to himself. All bets are off when they are both kidnapped by an ex Mercile Doctor, and locked in a cage together with only each other to lean on. They fall for each other while locked away together , but when help comes will they go back to life as normal or will they find a way to Stay together?

“I’m turned-on and you’re not. This is traumatic for you, I’m aware of that, yet I still ache to feel your hands on me.”

 photo 8b8d4e161a9130085555355d8900a2fa3d06139d430de326e1e525966a30d3a8_zpsglvcd29x.jpg

Wow this book is so full of drama. Add a baby, a over the top protective father, and a serious lack of communication skills and you got a angst filled emotional read!

 photo bbe9d251c7a5d357546be16ab671229d_zpsogqqey3b.jpg

“Relax for me, beautiful. I’m going to enter you slowly and make you come hard for me.”

Brawn:

“Her shock will wear off soon and she’s going to be pissed but she is cute when she’s mad.”

 photo 6ea5df94e05ead55b8d298f929577d6f_zps8h4havpp.jpg

Brawn was sweet, sexy, and protective. I loved him. When he dropped to his knees and buried his face against her thigh and said “Do not send me away.” OMG I freakin melted. He was a little bone headed though and didn't seem to know how to tell Becca how he felt. Communication problems big time!

“You smell so good and taste it too. I wish I could strip you bare and explore every inch with my hands, nose and tongue. I’d lick every spot that would make you moan my name.”

“He can hear you? Us?” He grinned. “I didn’t know that.” He bent a little, put his face closer to her belly. “Hello, little one. I am your dad. I long to hold you in my arms.”

“I’m your male,” he growled softly. “No one else cares for you but me. I will beat any male who tries. You might not want me to claim you and you might refuse to be my mate but you won’t refuse this, Becca. I will be here for you at all times. It will be only me inside you. Only me touching you. Only my lips kissing you.”

Becca:

 photo images 11_zpst2bb9nnf.jpg

“I’m tougher than you think and I’m not afraid. I can’t even think when you’re kissing me. You’re totally incredible.”

I thought I would hate Becca. I read some of the reviews before reading this book and the way everyone acted I just knew I would wanna punch her in the face, but I liked her . I totally got where she was coming from. Don't get me wrong they both had huge communication problems and for two blunt people they should have just came straight out with their problems and talked , but She had reasons to feel the way she did and alot of people would have acted the same way. Becca has some emotional scars, but I thought she was brave, outspoken, and had a good heart.

“You’re sorry for what? Kissing me until I couldn’t think straight and enjoying it? Wanting me? I feel the same way about you. My only regret is that you stopped.”

“The first time I saw Brawn I thought…” She sniffed. “I thought he had the most beautiful eyes I’d ever seen. He was so hot. I was attracted to him instantly. I—” She suddenly laughed. “I thought he’d make a great stripper with that body and wished I could see him out of his clothes.”

 photo DemCarlieVibes_zpsagp6oyqn.jpg

“I love you. Never doubt that. You’re everything to me. I want and need you.”

If you love drama and angst this is the book for you. I felt it was a good read and I really liked the ending. I can't wait to read more about the new males found. I am on to the next book!! Here is my favorite moment from this book:

“He said he would like to keep putting babies in your belly over and over again so that you could never leave him because he fears human divorces and couldn’t stand ever losing you.”Becca looked at Brawn, stunned. Hope gripped her hard that Breeze was stating true facts. It would change everything, mean he really did want her before there’d been a baby. His frown deepened. “Do not be afraid of me.” “We figured after eight or nine little baby Brawn sons that you would be too tired to even think about wanting to leave. Was that a good number of children to make you too exhausted to ever leave him?” Breeze grinned at her. Becca suddenly laughed as her gaze fixed on Brawn. The confused look on his face made her laugh harder. She gripped her stomach and enjoyed the humor. “Becca?” Brawn was concerned as he touched her arm. She got control and wiped at her eyes. “You wanted me to birth your own little army of mini Brawns to keep me with you, huh?” “It was just a thought.” A blush darkened his cheeks

2.5/5

This was a huge disappointment. This book had high potential to be a 4 or even 5 stars read for me, but unfortunately it fell far short of my expectations. The story started off promising but somewhere around halfway through the third quarter, it started to go off track, and finally ended up being only a mediocre read for me.

Despite the fact that I found the story itself was fun, the plot was interesting and Brawn was so adorable, there were still so many things that didn't work for me in this book. As the story went on, I became more and more frustrated with Becca and the people around her and Brawn. I wanted to pull my hair out when Becca kept trying to make a mindless decision, and she was far too stubborn about her pregnancy and the father of her child.

The people around this couple were so annoying. Not only didn't they help make anything better, they tried to interfere with Brawn and Becca, like they didn't want him to reconcile with her. WTH! Slade and Trisha had annoyed me since I'd read their book (Slade, the second installment in New Species series) and they just showed up in this book to annoy me again! (Someone throw these two awful people out of this book please!)

The romance between Brawn and Becca availed me nothing. The author failed to convince me that both of them had had strong feelings for each other. I didn't believe one little bit of that!

This is the fifth installment in the series but there was still not much depth to the heroine's character, not different from the previous books. In this one, how could Becca had no close friends, no colleagues, or no relatives, except her father and her late husband's family in Europe?! It was totally unrealistic!

However, I was satisfied with the ending. The author did a great job on this wonderful HEA.

By the way, if it weren't for Brawn, I would give this book 2 stars. Enough said!

After Justice, which I liked very much https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... , I was a bit disappointed with Brawn's story.

I was not crazy about Becca....in fact, she and I never clicked....the way she treated Brawn after their release from captivity was just not on. And then, she's supposedly a kick-ass kind of woman...really!!!!!!! And she behaves like that!!!!!!!!!! She actually got on my nerves with all her whining....

But hey, Brawn loves her so I guess he sees something in her I don't!!!

Please tell me that there are others out there who thought the cover of this book was so totally beyond "hideous"!!! Geez, the guy's body looks somewhat out of proportion...or are my reading glasses fogged up!!!!
No, really, I have this image of Brawn looking like this

This installment of the mind-crack made me mad.

The other books in this series have all been hellishly flawed, but I've been able to enjoy them regardless. This one, not so much.

If I could rate just the first half of this book, this would get 4 stars, easy. I found the whole kidnapping plot fascinating. Brawn and Becca's experiences while in captivity are hot, and while I don't think I would be rushing to bang my cellmate under their circumstances, the whole thing worked for me, with limited eye rolls.

Brawn is wonderful. He's a stud. He has stamina for days. He knows how to please a lady. He says swoon worthy things. He's not wearing ANY clothes on the cover of the book. Would bang.

But around half way through this story, when they got out of the cage, everything started to go downhill.

Becca turns into a FUCKING STUBBORN IDIOT and I wanted to stab her in her stupid face. Seriously. You Just how delusional are you?

Her father, Tim, deserves a giant kick in the dick. How dare you do what you did to keep Brawn and Becca apart. You selfish asshole.

The lack of communication between the characters in this is atrocious. The fact that Brawn and Becca need multiple people at multiple times to mediate their discussions, is fucking stupid. Why don't you two just sit down and actually TALK TO EACH OTHER and then maybe you would be able to see that you are both being stupid and can be together and don't need a bazillion people involved in your shit.

Oh! And the thing that makes me the most ragey about this book is the fact that after Becca and Brawn's encounter in the cage, during Becca's check up The justification of this in the book is absolutely ludicrous. A woman should ALWAYS have the right to choose what to do with her own body. The fact that another woman took this choice away from her, makes it even worse. I loathe this part of the story with the fire of a thousand suns.

All the swoon worthy lines that Brawn says, cannot make up for the burning rage I feel about the above spoiler. It really ruined the second part of the book for me.

The writing in this is an improvement on the previous installments, the sexy times were hot and there were noticeably fewer errors.

I will keep going with this series, but I think I need a little break from it.

Licking this muscles clean with my lovelies Jess and Alp tomorrow, 29 Feb

Yup. Abundance of muscles indeed but the story? Eh.

I give points to the mountain of muscles on the cover *mouths* but I hated the pose - it didn't do any good to me.

The other point goes out to our heroine, Becca. She was courageous and had stayed positive during the first bit of their captivity. I like those traits in my heroines. I'm not a man but I get a raging hard on when female roles display characters such as this.

So for these two, I give this.

But.

Yes, there's a but because these were short lived. Becca turned into a nightmare after few pages in.

Ok.
This is the fifth installment of NS. We have Brawn and Becca this time.
Brawn who was introduced at the last part of Valiant's book.
Becca on the other hand was a military brat. Her dad was Tim Oberto, Jessie Dupree's old boss.

They met. There was an attraction. And then they were captured and caged.
Caged.
Brawn was locked in a cage for so long, getting maltreated and experimented. So, it was only fitting that I expected fear, rage and non stop violence from him but it didn't happen.
What he and Becca did was they bonked.
They banged.
They copped a root.
How would one feel if one was recaptured and was put back in a cage again? Surely, not have hot sexes. Right? Right.
Whilst the executed sexy times were hot, I couldn't get myself to like it. It was wrong and was misplaced.

Another thing, all characters are plain stupid ESP the hero and heroine.
People, assuming things won't help. F*kn talk to each other.
The story dragged because of this.

Also, why does everyone have the need to dip in and meddle in everyone's relationships? Steer clear and get the f*ck off and let the ones IN the relationship to talk and sort things out themselves.
They're consenting adults and do not need anyone's interference.

Oh and what was all the misleading information of medication about?
Whatever universe you're in, you can't just give medication to anybody without informing the recipient what it was for.
for whatever reason you may have, it is unacceptable.
And no matter what angle you look at it, it is f*kn wrong. That is taking away one's decision.

And lastly, Tim Oberto who was a dick and cannot see reasons became a big teddy bear all of a sudden at the end? So wrong and did not fit rightly in with his character.

The book held a promise at the start and ended poorly and leaving me wanting to do this

The General’s Daughter!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: ❤️💙💚💜💖
Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙📔
World building: 🌏🌍🌏🌎
Character development: 🤓😉🤨😊
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Solo Narration

The heroine: Becca - Her father is having a New Species man move in and wants Becca to leave her house which is the guesthouse on his property and he wants her to move back in the main house. She refuses to leave her home. Her father had been with the military for twenty five years and he now found and saved New Species. Brawn is replacing an injured person on the team and the team can’t live on the New Species compound, they have to live near the rest of the team. Her father orders Becca to stay away from Brawn.

The Hero: Brawn - Brawn was taller and more muscular than the average human male, had keener senses, cat-like eyes that can see better than humans, and other enhancements that made him New Species. His job would be to make first contact with New Species that they found and rescued from the centers. He was to make them comfortable so they knew they were being rescued and didn’t fear the people on the rescue team.

The Story: Becca was attracted to Brawn from the first time she met him. She had been married before and her husband, Bradley had died, so she tended to feel guilty with other men, but she didn’t even think of Bradley when she looked at Brawn. She moved him into her house, but didn’t move out like her father had wanted. Brawn wanted to learn more about humans, and was attracted to Becca but never wanted to be intimate with a human as he thought they were too fragile and he would hurt them.

There were some things I really liked about this story and things I didn’t. Becca got sloppy drunk near the beginning and I didn’t much like that. Though I liked the character of Brawn and how he learned about humans through watching TV and Movies. It was kind of funny how he learned things from watching porn, so wasn’t sure what was real and what wasn’t.

This book is told in dual points of view via solo narration and was narrated by Vanessa Chambers. I like Vanessa’s voice which is soft and feminine and she is able to do different voices for different characters very nicely. I would rather this series be dual narration, but at least there is a good solo narrator.

Okay. . . Confession. . . Laurann is my crit-partner so I've read this book (don't hate me) and I have to tell you. . . I was nervous going into this one. . . Justice was such a powerhouse book. There'd been a big build up to the leader of the New Species book and amazingly Justice's book was one of those that actually lived up to the hype. I think Justice was better than we all expected and that was saying something!!

So with Brawn I was wringing my hands because I thought. . . How can she possibly top the awesomeness of Justice?

Well. . . Let me tell you. . . She did it! I stayed up ALL NIGHT to finish Brawn. She completely sucked me in with Brawn and Becca's story. . . And you have to consider me having a baby and two other children. Staying up all night to finish pre-reading a story I could have easily waited until morning to finish was madness. . . but that's how incredible this story is!! It's still with me and I read it a while ago!

Be excited about the upcoming release. . . On Dec. 27 BUY BRAWN!!! You will love it!! This series gets better and better and better and I'm so thankful Laurann created this wonderful world we all get to visit and fall in love with!

BRAWN & BECCA

I loved the book cover and the story.
It almost felt like I was reading two different books.
In the first part Brawn was strong and protective and in the second part he looked so sensitive and vulnerable. The perfect male.
I am looking forward to Flame's story. He was so cute in this book.

Another great installment to this series!
Once again I could not be moved from my laptop.
I love Brawn he is such a sweetheart. There are a few tender moments in this one between Brawn & Becca that had me a little teary eyed. The suspense/drama, while again, not too deep still breathed life into this story. The ending had me laughing as well.

If you are following this series then I would recommend this read.
Although these books can be read as stand alones, I would advise you to read them all in order. It allows you to appreciate more, each story within this series for what it is.

Brawn was a decent story that entertained me but the heroine annoyed me for the later part of the story when she wouldn't give Brawn a chance to talk things over so they could work out a misunderstanding. Before this she seemed nice but she came off mean to me during this part. I understood that she had issues from her last marriage but she didn't seem to care that her attitude hurt Brawn and wouldn't give him a chance to explain his feelings. But before this part and after it's cleared up were good. Still not as good as Valiant though.

I loved this book! Sometimes in the last book or so the heroine came out too needy in my opinion so it's nice to see it was different in this one. Brawn was just so sexy and sweet at the same time. This one def a keeper

Why wouldn’t you ever touch a human female?”
“Do you want a polite answer or a direct one?”
“I like direct.”
He hesitated, seeming unsure.
“I won’t take offense.” She reached up to cross her finger over her heart and smiled. “You can’t say something like that without me wanting to know why. I’m a bit nosey and with my father being who he is, there are enough secrets I’m not allowed to know. You don’t have to answer but I’d appreciate it if you would.”
“I’m bigger and stronger than human males. I like rougher sex than human females could handle. I’d end up hurting her without meaning to.”

“Dibs on the guy with the bandage. I want to kill that motherfucker myself.”
Brawn’s eyebrows arched.
“When we’re found,” she clarified, “you hold that piece of shit and I get to beat on him for a while, okay? I’ll borrow one of the team’s guns and shoot him after I hear him scream enough to make me feel better about whatever happens to me.”
“You are violent.” Brawn’s lips twitched. “I like that.”
“Extreme circumstances. It’s either plot to kick that dickhead in the nuts or curl into a ball and cry. I prefer the first option.”

5 Smoking Hot Stars (review is spoilerish)

There is instant chemistry between Brawn and Becca (I mean, who wouldn't drool for a guy with long black hair that could be a stripper...yum!). Unfortunately they get kidnapped right off the bat. I will admit to loving the part where they are locked in a cage together. Brawn was so sweet but resolved to not get involved with a human. This hurt and confused Becca but she still handled the difficult situation well.

What I didn't like was the way Tiger and Tim Oberto took it upon themselves to lie and create mistrust between Brawn and Becca. They already have some communication problems and everything gets muddled and messy. Things get resolved eventually but people, mind your own business.

We get to catch up with some of my favorite hotties Flame, Brass and Bestial (I want them all!!!). We also meet 919 (Wrath), 358 (Shadow) and 880 (Obsidian) for the first time.

I think this might just be my favorite in this series so far! I REALLY loved Brawn...and i loved how protective he was of Becca when they were held captive. I also actually liked Becca. After reading some reviews i was expecting her to be extremely un-likeable (i really need to stop reading reviews before i read a book, especially when the book hasn't been rated so well...not that people don't have a right to their opinions if they've disliked something...i just think when there are negative comments made i go in with reservations and i keep anticipating the "bad stuff!" LOL!). I thought Becca handled their captivity really well and was rather sweet with Brawn in there. The only time that she frustrated me was when she was so upset that she wouldn't allow Brawn to explain himself...i felt really sorry for him :( ...then again...she was sort of justified in thinking he only wanted her back for one reason.. ..it's just unfortunate that her father manipulated the whole thing making them BOTH think that neither of them wanted anything to do w/ the other after everything that had happened to them. Although Brawn going all "he-man" on Becca when she returned didn't exactly help the "situation" either..good thing he had Trisha and Breeze to help explain things to Becca! After reading the entire book i can see how some might dislike Becca for how she treated Brawn but again...WE knew the "real story" but she did not and sadly she was just trying to protect herself from a repeat of her last marriage.

All in all, i thoroughly enjoyed this book..more than i thought i would! I do wish Tiger's book was next..another character i've really enjoyed in all the books! Wrath is apparently who the next book is about and i can honestly say i have NO CLUE who that is...but here's hoping it will be as entertaining as the rest have been! :)

I totally enjoyed this book. I liked the way that Brawn was so gentle with her and protective of her. I liked the outgoing say anything heroine. I continue to really enjoy this series. The men are just always so sweet. I've read some reviews that said the stories are really similar to each other plot wise but I don't care at all. In fact I like it. I like stories where the man is some paranormal something and the woman is human and the book is about them meeting and her learning to deal with his otherness and him learning to love a human woman. It's a formula that works for me and I'll keep signing up to read it. I don't need any huge overarching story that begins to take over the falling in love aspect that happens in many paranormal series. I don't mind a continuing thread or two but I'm reading for the love story. That is well done in this series so far.

The plot here made sense. There was sweet romance, some heated sex and some angst. Good book.

Fun but lacked intensity

Laurann Dohner is guilty pleasure of mine. Her books in this series can be very similar but I still enjoy them. This one is no different but I've come to expect animalistic intensity from these heroes and this one was regularly intense? Yeah, my standards are all messed up, but there's no going back now

"If you have not picked up this series, do it. Each book gets better and better and they are all reread material."

**Reread, excellent story. Brawn is so delicious in this story, his blunt way of speaking and vulnerability when it comes to worrying if Becca will accept him makes your heart go flip flop.

After a couple of stone-cold, dudly alpha heroes draining the spark from their HarleyLand female doormats, I went in search of a more lighthearted and besotted hero. The New Species crew is always good for some laughs and cross-species cuddles.

Well, it didn't turn out quite as I hoped.

GeorgeBrawn and Daffy Becca are immediately attracted to each other then immediately thrown into a seriously icky situation with the creepy men that hate all beast-men that win human women by their animal attraction and great hair. Dragged into a bunker there is a prolonged scene that seriously creeped and icked me out in regard to its over the top voyeurism and forced sex. Put a damper on the whole romance aspect of the story.

After the unpleasantries are over, the story settles down in a series of ridiculous antics, contrived separation then OTT panther-man/little woman sexcapades.

I enjoyed this book. The series has, for the most part, been very good (I’m still going to pretend Valiant doesn’t exist).

I don’t have any complaints about the book but one thing did bother me. When Jessie and Justice were talking to Becca’s father, I felt like they were talking to him like he was a kid. I know they were worried that he would try to attack or kill Brawn, but come on! Give the guy some credit. Don’t they know the difference between venting in anger and actions?

I really liked Brawn and Becca together, and they had to deal with some rough situations. I think one of my favorite moments was right after Becca was brought to Reservation . Brawn rivals Slade for my favorite New Species, pushing Justice back to the second position.

I’m really looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

New Species was a guilty pleasure for me many years ago, so after rereading Valiant I decided to read another one. I loved Brawn and Becca together especially during their confinement. Their attraction to each other is immediate but Brawn has no interest in human woman, I loved how quickly his mind was changed lol. If I had one complaint I wish they would have talked sooner, if they had communicated they would have saved each other a lot of heartache.

Jesus, where do they find these cover models and how to I get one for myself? Seriously, someone tell me how to get one of these guys. I almost want to just stare at the covers instead of read them. But I didn't do that, which is a good thing since I really enjoyed this book. I really liked Brawn and Becca, they made a good couple, super cute.

Ok, but not great

Due to poor planning, the MCs in this story end up living together in Becca’s house. They are both attracted to each other, but Brawn doesn’t want to be with a human and Becca has some scars. They get abducted and get put in a cage together because the kidnappers think they are a couple.
Honestly this book made me dislike Tim even more, which I didn’t think was possible. He is exactly the type of military man who shouldn’t be in a position of power and is so quick to anger that he makes decisions he can’t take back. The MCs were ok, but I felt like there wasn’t a very clear picture about who Brawn was, beyond being new species, and Becca was completely defined by her past marriage and her relationship with her father. Does she have a job? No idea. Any friends? Beats me. (No her dads military team doesn’t count).
Also, these books need some serious editing. So much of the phrasing is awkward and stilted. However, this book was less awkward and stilted than the previous 4.

Spice: 4/5

Triggers: dubcon, kidnapping, murder, captivity, witnessed SA, forced sexual contact between MCs

This was a very good story. I liked both Becca and Brawn and enjoyed their story. I'm really liking this series and am planning to continue with it.

Becca is the daughter of Tim, the leader of the human task force that works with the NSO (the New Species Organization). She's a widow and lives alone in a house that she inherited from her grandfather, which happens to be on the same land as her Father's house. When Tim has a NS male coming to stay with him as a new member of the team, Tim tries to give him Becca's house (telling her to move in with him) but Becca's not about to be chased out of her house or let her Father order her around. As a result, she stays in her house but lets the NS male, Brawn, stay in her guest bedroom.

Brawn is a member of the NS council and agreed to help out the human task force that's been working on retrieving NS people that are still captives in secret labs and such. When he arrived at the place he's to stay, he finds himself confronted with a small, human female that he's strongly attracted to, regardless of the fact that he never thought he'd want a human female (thinking they're too delicate and soft). He resolves to try to do his job without giving in to temptation.

Brawn and Becca have issues almost immediately. The first night Brawn spends in Becca's house, they're attacked by a team of men that manage to drug Brawn and take them both captive. They take Becca because they believe she's his girlfriend and want to use her to control him and for some procedures they're doing. While they're held captive, Brawn and Becca both start to have deeper feelings for each other. They become closer and even come together once during their captivity. They both want more with the other and worries that the way they're being held captive might cause problems for them being together later. Unfortunately, they don't get much of a chance to talk things out as every time either Becca or Brawn seems about to say something helpful, they get interrupted. Becca and Brawn end up rescued before they've worked things out between them and a well-meaning but rather assholish intervention ends up keeping them apart after the rescue.

Becca and Brawn both end up heart-broken and thinking the other doesn't want them. Brawn tries to live his life. Becca goes off to hide in a cabin and get away from everyone due to an unforeseen circumstance that comes from her and Brawn's time together. Despite her reasons for hiding, she ends up at the Reserve (and NSO compound) against her will but for her own safety. Brawn finds out she's there and goes after her but Becca thinks he's only there because he feels guilty and not because he wants her. They end up going through some tough times as she believes he really wants an NS female and Brawn doesn't understand what is wrong and how to convince her to be with him. I guess when you grow up in a lab, relationship skills and understanding women aren't things you learn...poor Brawn. LOL. With a little help from some new friends, Becca does end up convinced of Brawn's feelings and agrees to be with him and they get a sweet HEA.

This was a very good story. I really liked Brawn and Becca and was so frustrated as they were trying to get past their mis-conceptions and issues, so I was very happy to see them work things out. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. I'd recommend this book. Thumbs up! :D

* note - I listened to the audio version of this book. The narrator did a pretty good job.

RATING: 3 "Much Better" Hearts

Brawn is the fifth addition to the New Species series, and fortunately for my sake, it was an enjoyable step-up from the colossal mess that was Justice. That's not to say, it didn't have flaws – it did – but the flaws are more of an annoying background noise in face of the moderately fun storyline, and pleasing characters.

This series has a serious tendency to overlap with its plot, but, surprisingly, this one was different, in that it takes us right to the core of the bad guys' den. Majority of the story is spent with Brawn and Becca after they get captured, and it was nice to learn the big picture behind Mercile, the bad guys who created New Species, instead of being stuck at Homeland or Reservation. This story takes us into the human world, and every plot revelation is interesting, and not in the least bit dull.

Along with the engaging plot, both the main characters are a nice reprieve from the usual characters with their million and one reasons why they can't be together. Brawn is badass, intense and sweet, whereas, Becca is strong, brave, and also badass in her own way. Both of them are perfect for one another with their similar yet contrasting personalities, making them a couple whose story I could easily get behind, and actually find memorable. The smexy scenes are ever raunchy, but in this I found a sweet romance as well. It's not all about the lust, and somewhere along the way, emotions come into play, making us feel the love Brawn and Becca share.

Although, this could have gone without the lack of communication. All it takes is a few words to clear up a HUGE situation, but it doesn't get done until the very last possible second. Cliche, and beyond burdensome and annoying. So, no major reasons why they can't be together, but communication problems galore. I suspect, this is one aspect in the eroitca genre that will never change.

Overall, I enjoyed the story and the characters, and aside from the reservations I had, Laurann Dohner did good with this. Looking forward to what the next book, Wrath, has to offer.

Listened to on audio. Narrated by Vanessa Chambers.

I really enjoyed this one, but I must add that it really *really* pushed my buttons at times!

I liked both Brawn and Becca.

Becca doesn't seem to have been very popular with people and I don't think I really understand why. I thought she was really likeable, but I don't understand people who are pushed around by their family. I kept willing her to tell her Dad where to stick it and I was a little disappointed that we never saw her confront him about his unreasonable behaviour. I-do-it-because-I-love-you is a pathetic excuse for being so controlling and disrespectful to her.

Despite that, I had a lot of admiration for her. I found it hard to listen as people over and over again betrayed her trust. Brawn (when she thought he didn't want her), her Dad, her dead husband, Tricia, Brawn again (when she thought he was seeing other women). I was actually impressed by her strength. Even when it seemed the whole world was betraying her, she pulled up her big girl panties and got on with it. I'd have shot Brawn in the man-parts if that was me. Yes yes, I know he hadn't actually done anything, but that is beside the point! She thought he had.

Now, Brawn I loved. He was the usual dominating demanding sex god that we all enjoy from this writer. I never get bored of that guy! I felt sorry for Brawn when Becca kept pushing him away and I liked that he never gave up. I know other people found Becca frustrating for this, however, for me I totally understood where she was coming from and she was hurting. I thought Becca was pretty dignified under stress (apart from when she eats or drinks alcohol - that was really not classy!).

One bizarre thing was Tricia and her abso-f*ckin-lutely unacceptable behaviour giving Becca pills to unknowingly abort her baby. What the heck?

Despite that strange wtf moment, I absolutely loved this one!
