Oblivion

Rate this book
“Remembering or forgetting is doing gardener’s work, selecting, pruning. Memories are like there are those that need to be quickly eliminated in order to help the others burgeon, transform, flower.” For the health of the psyche and the culture, for the individual and the whole society, oblivion is as necessary as memory. One must know how to forget, Marc Augé suggests, not just to live fully in the present but also to comprehend the past. Renowned as an anthropologist and an innovative social thinker, Augé’s meditation moves from how forgetting the present or recent past enables us to return to earlier pasts, to how forgetting propels us into the present, and finally to how forgetting becomes a necessary part of survival. Oblivion moves with authority and ease among a wide variety of sources—literature, common experience, psychoanalysis, philosophy, ethnography—to illustrate the interplay of memory and forgetting in the stories of life and death told across many cultures and many times. Memory and oblivion, he concludes, cannot be “Memories are crafted by oblivion as the outlines of the shore are created by the sea.”

Marc Augé is a French anthropologist. His career can be divided into three stages, reflecting shifts in both his geographical focus and theoretical development: early (African), middle (European) and late (Global). These successive stages do not involve a broadening of interest or focus as such, but rather the development of a theoretical apparatus able to meet the demands of the growing conviction that the local can no longer be understood except as a part of the complicated global whole.

TELL ME WHAT YOU FORGET AND I WILL TELL YOU WHO YOU ARE (p 18)

This book is three short chapters followed by a love note. Chapter 1 is gorgeous and a little life changing. RECOMMENDED. I'll share below some of its gems.

Chapter 2 is mediocre French theory that put ME into oblivion three night this week - a sweet sedative for crossing over to the dreamworld. So the supposed intellectual meat is instead an incantation! Chapter 3 is on the relationship of forgetting to past, present and future. I had been happy Auge' could write this book without talking a lot of Proust and Dumas, but no, here's the discourse on Temps Perdu. There IS one very good idea here, but not the content/creativity ratio of Chapter 1.

Chapter one introduces the concept of oblivion as something far deeper than forgetting. It's as mystical as intellectuals get, pointing to the place things go when they disappear. Auge' ranges over the blessings of a bad memory, and the ways that forgetting the recent past is what gives us a relationship to the ancient past. And, wonderfully, he writes of dreams.

Like this:

"... the adventures of the dream prolong those of the previous day - thus making the previous day and the dream a continuous thought called upon to be the subject of a same account that can be completely refined ONLY BY THE PERSON WHO IS STRONG AND LUCID ENUOGH TO REMEMBER all the details of his or her nocturnal life.... Europeans are AVERSE TO acquiring an AWARENESS OF THEIR OWN 'PSYCHOTIC CORE' and the best proof of this is that they have a tendency to forget their dreams" (p 12, emphasis mine)

Radically, Chapter 1 offers a naturalistic view of western mind. It's wonderful and rare for this context, and beautiful above all else. (Auge' is a slightly offensive anthropologist of less developed cultures, so perhaps he is well accustomed to seeing more "savage" minds as continuous with nature.) Forgetting and remembering - disappearing and reconstitution - are discussed as plants, as wave forms, as earth.

Like this:

"It is quite clear that our memory would be 'saturated' rapidly if we had to preserve every image of our childhood, especially those of our earliest childhood. But what is interesting ins that which remains. And what remain - remembrances or traces, we shall come back to that - what remains is the product of an erosion caused by oblivion. Memories are crafted by oblivion as the outlines of the shore are crafted by the sea." (p 20)

Chapter 1 brings an uncanny feeling for the relationship of forgetting - moreover, of OBLIVION - and death. But the relationship is reciprocal (this is a weirdly mystical notion). Disappearance is the little death that life needs to renew itself constantly.

Auge' is BEING mystical here. Chapter 1 transmits this with uncanny Marxian sharpness I don't see when the same point is made in Zen or Yoga: "Oblivion is the life force of memory, and remembrance is its product." (p 21)

Listeye alanlara keyifli okumalar 📚

Molto interessante.

everything concerning memory and oblivion, and the last chapter especially slaps. has some real thought provoking bits that made me stop and just /think/. but it can get kinda weird when it dwells in the ethnological investigation parts (uncomfortably too positive view of the impact of colonialism on ”creating new narratives” for example).

=========================
