A grand tour awaits the delighted, eager fun loving children from Auckland New Zealand's, Charman School 15 boys, from eight to thirteen in age, maybe a couple a year older will be taken on a cruise around the two big islands, a great vacation that will last a few weeks on board a schooner, with a veteran captain in command and a capable crew, get away from the tedious work the never ending boredom of education. But before they begin circumnavigating the colony with all the sailors except one on shore, getting a last few drops of liquid refreshments the captain will begin the voyage at the morning's first light. A peaceful so quiet night descents, the boat is secure tied up by the pier, in the harbor the mate in charge, all is ready and thinking why he too should not partake and join the men in the festivities, leaves the black cook to take care of the young drowsy students, Moko is 12. Something unforeseen occurs the impossible, in the darkness as most of the children are asleep the schooner, Sleuth drifts quietly away from the pier nobody on board notices, it mysteriously travels miles out into the open sea, gently rocking and swaying until alarms by a few still awake arose the other youngsters. Much too late the boat is not paid any attention by various ships, just another schooner floating through being 1860, nothing can communicate their predicament. A fruitless search fails in the morning by the parents, would be crew and other volunteers, debris discovered everyone believes they're lost all New Zealand mourns. A horrific hurricane strikes the luckless kids driving the hapless vessel southeastward, sails are ripped enormous waves crash on deck, winds howling the older boys with hardly any experience, Moko the most knowledgeable technically Briant 14, French, Gordon 13 ( and his dog Fan) American and Donagan 13 British, try to keep the Sleuth from floundering almost falling themselves, into the turbulent water the rest of the passengers below, nervously asking questions and being kept where they will not cause trouble. Many stormy days pass, the weather becomes cold at long last, they spot beautiful land ahead. Somehow the vessel hits a reef becomes stuck, a good circumstance otherwise the schooner would undoubtedly capsize and everyone on board drowned, in the rough seas. The tide goes out and the nimble little boys can walk the quarter mile to the sandy shore, jumping from rock to rock, not feasible ?... later a colossal wave deposits the yacht on the beach. Where what is this place, island , continent the Pacific Ocean is vast, weirdly the temperature starts getting even colder (Antarctica ? ), quickly taking the provisions from the wreck, this will be their new home for the foreseeable future ... But the young students are not afraid, they've read Robinson Crusoe and Swiss Family Robinson. Can little children survive the harsh terrain, freezing winters, find a suitable shelter avoid dangerous animals, supply enough food for substance, and keep themselves healthy and united...They find a human skeleton by a lake on Charman Island ( the castaways are sentimental ), the last previous inhabitant here. A splendid trip on both sea and island that makes happy reading.

I read this when I was 10 years old and I thought it was fantastic. I came across it while on vacation and staying at a relative stranger's house. In hopes of not having to make conversation, I scanned a bookshelf for anything that seemed to have been published for children. This was obviously an adventure story (never my fave genre) but it was 1. my only option and 2. by an author I already recognized as "one of those important ones." I read it in one long sitting and it veritably transported me. I thrilled at the idea of an deserted island full of (in my imagination) cute, resourceful boys. It's been one of my most cherished reading experiences and I always knew I ought not re-read it, for risk of approaching it from a more critical age/angle. But I couldn't resist when I came across it in my ordering other Verne titles for our "Fiction Children's Classics" section. So, anyway, I re-read it and I was right: I should have just let it shine in my memory. This time it seemed dry, stilted, preposterous and boring. But in my heart I know it's not...I'm more willing to believe that I'VE become those things.

Verne inkább a Maslow-piramis legalsó szintjén igyekszik ellavírozni, a primer fiziológiai szükségletek világában, röpke kirándulásokat téve a biztonsági szükségletek világába.

description

I hate how this book isn't popular enough. My teacher recommended it to me when I was about eleven and I finished it in two days. I found it really interesting. It's one of the few Jules Verne books I could actually finish. It has the typical Jules Verne descriptions and as usual Verne "predicts" the future with "parasailing" and other inventions not present at the time. I would recommend this book to readers who enjoyed William Golding's Lord of the Flies and Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe. I would love to reread it in French, because I feel that the meaning of any book is lost behind translation. However Verne sometimes gets too specific with the descriptions which might take away from the reader's interest. Briant,Doniphan and Gordon(French, British and American as far as I remember)are the leaders of the group and survive through a lot of difficulties. Overall, I really enjoyed this book.

dedicated with affection to Manuel Alfonseca to Fujiko Fujio creator of the Doraemon series, and to his wonderful fictional creature Nobita Nobi.
Ladies and gentlemen this book I have just read (my friend Professor Manuel Alfonseca… is a witness that I’ve wanted long since to read it
https://www.goodreads.com/author/show... . I think, I have already told it that I am a big fan of Japan, and one of my favorite series is the manga, and Anime Doraemon https://www.goodreads.com/series/8199... created by Fujiko Fujio https://www.goodreads.com/author/show..., however Doraemon is not my favorite character, but Nobita Nobi, which is very similar to how I was as a child. That is the reason why I have so much affection for him. Now the rules of Goodreads prevent you from putting links of links that do not come from Goodreads, but certainly I would have incorporated the link of one of my favorite episodes of the series, although being such a long series there are many, but one that touched my heart was the episode that was called The cover of the human book. In which Professor Eijiro seeing that today children do not read anything orders them to read a book, and write an essay, about the book. The only condition he puts in return is that the chosen book is not a comic with which it makes Nobita's work very difficult, who if we except for comics has never read a book in his life. Every time he does, his head spins, and he gets dizzy. So he will try with Doraemon's inventions to find an alternative. First he asks for help from his friend with whom Shizuka Minamota is in love, but this contrary to expectation does not want to help him, and I must ask for help from his rival since he is also in love with Shizuka. To the smartest boy in the school Hidetoshi Dekisughi, who has already finished his homework, because he is the smartest boy, and more responsible in the school and Dekisughi shows him his favorite books, which I believe, which are also those of Fujiko F. Fujio himself. He first shows him"Uncle Tom's Cabin"; or, Life Among the Lowly" https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2... however Nobita rejects her, because she is too sad, then offers her"The Little Prince" of Saint Exupery https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7... (I hope, that my friend Professor Manuel Alfonseca if he reads this review is sympathetic, since Nobita has not read a book in his life), and therefore qualifies the"Little Prince" as too much for children, then shows him one of what for me is one of the books that I have liked the most"The Night Train of the Milky Way" by Miyazawa Kenji https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4... Miyazawa was known as the Japanese Tolstoy for his religious opinions. Miyazawa followed a very heterodox current of Buddhism known as Nicheren, but amazingly in what is known as"The Divine Comedy" Buddhist https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6... Miyazawa Kenji creates a Buddhist sky, and another Christian. In fact it is his affection for Christianity that makes this book one of my favorites, and I think he has been decisive in the Doraemon series, and in the sympathy that this series has had for Christianity so I like this book so much. However, as he cannot understand it, Dekisughi decides to propose another book, which is what I am going to comment on"Two years of vacation" by Jules Verne. Of course, when Dekisughi discovers that Nobita has no intention of reading the book, and that Nobita's plan is to turn Dekisughi into an audio book he refuses to help him, but Nobita who is a born manipulator makes him an offer that Dekisughi cannot refuse, and when he has offered it then he decides to do his audiobook functions (on subject I recommend my friend Julie Davis, and his partner Scott and his section a book is hard to find) https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... https://www.goodreads.com/author/show... and that's when the episode gets interesting, and when Dekisughi becomes Scherezade he reads"Two Years of Vacation" and the interruptions, and what they will do is that Nobita begins to feel fascinated with the story. Just as it happened with Beorn when Gandalf told him the story of his adventures. But the best of all is not that Nobita as a result of this episode takes love to reading. The great thing about the episode is that I also wanted to read this book that I now comment for you.
I have already told you that Nobita, and I were not so different, both Nobita, and I were bad students, and disasters in everything (I still am), and I guess the Goodreads user will be surprised by the confession I am going to make, and that is that I like Nobita barely read. It took me a long time to start reading. One day we had to bring to class a book, which we would have read, and I brought a children's book"The Blue Jajile" https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2.... It was the only thing I had read. Except for the compulsory readings of the school"The three stones and other stories" https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6..., "Marcelo crecepelos" https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6... "TheGhost of the Valley" https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2... "Little Otto has disappeared https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6... The Ugly, the Dumb, and the Bad https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5... "El Pampinoplas" https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3... but I think the first book that made me excited was "El pirata Garrapata de Juan" Muñoz https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... it could be said that it was the first serious reading I undercame, and as in the case of Nobita it was by obligation. For doing a job, as always I left everything for the last day. In fact I didn't even get to finish the book, but it was already the first step, and then more ambitious readings would come like"The Hobbit" https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5..., "The Lord of the Rings" https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3... E55FQ5iJF7&rank=3 which you could say was the first serious book I read, and then came Michael Ende's"The Endless Story" https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2... at first my father had a bit of a grudity, but when he knew, and he knew more about Tolkien's life I let him read it because he knew he was in good hands. The case of Tolkien https://www.goodreads.com/author/show... is very paradoxical, curiously as my friend Turbiales I did the opposite way. The role led me to Tolkien, and it wasn't the other way around as it usually is in these cases. I was already passionate about fantasy (as a child I saw the series of drawings of Dragons and Dungeons), and in sixth I already began my flirtations with role-playing games, and if I had known what was published in the 80s, and had been interested in reading surely my library would be larger. That new fascination with reading needed a good teacher so I think Tolkien was the best of teachers to take me on a good path (anyway my father has told me on countless occasions my readings are very similar to those read by my grandfather, and it is very possible that being born at the end of the twentieth century these would have been his readings). From there I did not stop until I reached where goodreads users have been able to appreciate.
Regarding Jules Verne my relationship was one of love and hate. Of course I did not read, but if I watched a lot of television, and I admit, that, although it was no wonder I liked very much the miniseries of Around the World in Eigthy days https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5... then Juan Manuel de Prada https://www.goodreads.com/author/show... was not a fan of Jules Verne, and I am infected by his rejection of his novels. Although I love it, and I think it is my second favorite reading"The Castle of the Carpathos" https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... in my opinion one of the Gothic novels, and horror that I have read personally I liked more than Dracula https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... &rank=1 . It was a more realistic view of the genre. However, I believe that from that theme I believe, that Professor Manuel Alfonseca could guess is"The Phantom of the Opera" by Gastón Leroux https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4... for me is the best of the three books (Dracula, Frankenstein https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...). I love the way Leroux writes https://www.goodreads.com/author/show..., although there are times that it goes wrong, however"The Castle of the Carpathians" is a very good choice. I think, the fact that Professor Alfonseca liked it, and was also the source of inspiration helped to give him another chance.
I certainly don't regret this novel inspired"Lord of the Flies" https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7... but disqualifications must be avoided, and this is not the only Robinsones story Verne wrote either. This one is undoubtedly influenced by"Robinson Crusoe" https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2... and a novel that my father loves (unlike me. My father is a lover of Robinsones novels, in fact, of P.C.S. Wren my favorite is"Beau Sabreur" https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/9... and mine is"Beau Ideal" https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/9... IvvB10fSYu&rank=1), but a book that drives my father crazy is"The Swiss Robinsons" by Johann Davis Wyss https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6... and one of the precursors of this genre before"Robinson Crusoe" would be a novel I wrote about yesterday"The Adventurer Simplex". Simplicissimus" by Hans Jakob Christoffel von Grimmelshausen https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/9.... However, I must admit that this is the one I liked the most of all. Verné instead of explaining to us why its young protagonists end up where they end up will do so in chapter III. In fact, Nobita's question is very pertinent. How come that ship was carried by minors? The beginning where the storm is told, and the struggle of the children not to be shipwrecked is very much of the films of Howard Hawks. The first thing that surprises us is that there is no adult. I was wondering the whole novel Why wasn't there any adult? And, what happened to the crew? Because at the end of the crew there is only the black boko group, who is a decisive character. Then it is seen that there are two sides that of the French boy Briant, who is adored by the little ones against pride and aristocratic Doniphans, who has his faction of friends Cross (who is his cousin), Wilcox, and Webb. I repeat again that this novel is not"Lord of the Flies",but it could have been, otherwise there would have been a balancing power in this case in the figure of the American Gordon surely Briant, and Doniphans would have killed each other, and the conflict would have been more virulent than that of Golding's novel.

English review: "Two Years' Vacation" tells the story of fifteen young boys, aged 8 to 14, who set off on a journey aboard a boat. Due to circumstances I won’t detail here, the ship ends up drifting at sea for over 20 days. Of the original crew, only the 12-year-old cabin boy, a Black youth, remains aboard. The vessel eventually shipwrecks on an island where the boys must survive on their own.
Let me start by saying that "Two Years' Vacation" is a far more entertaining book than "Robinson Crusoe"—entertaining, not better. Defoe’s novel delves much deeper into introspection, providing a level of depth that Jules Verne's book doesn’t even aim to achieve. Defoe seeks to portray both the physical and spiritual transformations that occur when living in isolation from civilization. By contrast, Verne simply wants to write an adventure novel showcasing that, though often underestimated by adults, children are capable of extraordinary feats.
That said, the book is a bit exaggerated. Apparently, these kids are experts in botany and zoology, knowing exactly what plants and animals are edible and how they can be utilized. They’re also remarkably skilled in handling firearms.
Of course, we’re once again presented with Jules Verne’s typical one-dimensional pirates—villains described only as irredeemably evil and capable of committing any atrocity without remorse. Their sole purpose in the story is to pose a threat to our young colonists, who are portrayed as morally perfect.
Although I knew it wouldn’t happen, I couldn’t help but hope that the conflicts between Briant and Doniphan might steer the book toward a "Lord of the Flies" trajectory. Naturally, being a Jules Verne novel, the events unfold quite differently. Instead of the boys descending into savagery, the island itself is transformed by their influence.
Despite its issues and the fact that I’ve read many other books with a similar premise, I was captivated by the boys’ efforts to discover whether they were on an island or a continent, their exploration of the island, the way they built their shelter, their search for ways to return to civilization, and their other endeavors. I would say that "Two Years' Vacation" is one of Jules Verne’s successful works.

Milujem tu knihu.

update 7/2022
Počúvala som ako audioknihu v češtine a veľmi som si to užila. Nesmrteľná klasika.

update 6/2024
Neviem, prečo som to sem nenapísala skôr - audiokniha v češtine (prerozprával Ondřej Neff, nahovoril Otakar Brousek ml.) nemá úplne rovnaký dej ako písaná kniha.

Two Years Holiday by Jules Verne

What a magic title- Two Years Holiday. It makes you want to read the book, just for the fun of taking this ride with the protagonists.

Or simply to keep it on your lap, to read when you have a little spare time of your own.

But if you want to read on, this is not about Jules Verne, but about my own ten years holiday… it’s been so long since I have read Jules Verne that I can only speak about the fantasy, the idea suggested by the book.

But is it all that desirable to have such long holidays?

I guess it depends.

There’s a lucky guy who has had more than two years, as a matter of fact, I don’t even know exactly how many years of holidays I have got …for I am that lucky bastard.

I did my share of work in my twenties and thirties: there were times when I had two, complementary jobs. I earned very good money and invested it in Algernon. Socrate (that is his real name) is the key player in that company and the initial agreement was that I will not interfere in the running of the company.

I had worked for AT&T, but they pulled out of Europe, with the lucrative business of long distance calls falling apart.

At the same time, I was organizing tours for the American Embassy – I have taken on a tour one ambassador Joe Guest and the…guests of another- Rosapepe. Because Algernon was going so well, I gave up the tours business…

So there I am, with about ten years holiday on my hands.

“There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so” – Shakespeare

You can look at this free time as a gift from above, which I did and spent a lot of time reading and fooling around, or think in terms of the condemned man in a Twilight Saga episode, who found that he is sent to Hell, and in the Inferno, there is nothing you can do in a meaningful manner.

My ten years holiday have opened up a lot of opportunities: I have build a house in Rasnov and spent three years there, I have visited almost all the German Fortified Churches in that area and much further beyond, in some cases a few times and I have read a lot, albeit some of the books passing through my hands did not stay there long… I became a fussy reader.

As a final thought for Jules Verne’s book: I remember how profoundly its reading has marked me- in a psychological interpretation, this book might have created in me the desire for a long sabbatical, retirement from “The Maddening Crowd”. If that happened, thank you Jules Verne.

Jules Verne, eşsiz zekasının sınırlarını tahmin etmekte zorlanıyorum. Bu kitap bana biraz yeni dönemden Sineklerin Tanrısı’nı hatırlattı. Tabii ki onlar Jules Verne’den etkilenmişlerdir. ^^

This was my favorite book around when I was 10, and many characters were my imaginary friends that I took around town with me... The adventures were awesome, the characters were very realistic (I loved how close in age we were) and I must admit, my favorite parts were all the bickering and fighting scenes between the good ones and the mean ones. Tee hee. As another reviewer said, this is the only Jules Verne book I breezed through and re-read over a dozen times. I wish it was more popular now! (It's huge in Japan)

A bunch of boys ends up shipwrecked on an island and instead of going "Lord of flies" at each other they're starting to organize they're daily work and do everything to survive. Obviously, not everyone agrees on everything, but they manage to get along well enough to survive and even to save other people later on.
A rather steady pace of this story made me read it way longer than the page count would suggest, but in the end, it was interesting and I enjoyed the experience. It might not be my favorite Verne story, but it's still a solid adventure.
Things I didn't like were mostly periodic-based: the way Moko was treated, the common use of guns among boys, etc. But that's how the world used to be, so I can't really blame the author. It helped that I have this lovely hardcover edition with some fitting images.

Ipucu vermek istemesemde kitabin ilerisinde çocukların yaptiklari yazilan seylerin biraz zorlama oldugunu, buyuk insanların bile yaparken zorlandığı şeyleri onlarin kolaylikla atlatmasinin biraz fazla abartildigini dusunsemde 'acaba ne olacak?' demektende hic vazgecmedim

As a contrast to the Swiss Family Robinson, you can't beat Jules Verne's tale of a group of boys accidentally cast away on a desert island for ingenuity and realism.

I enjoyed reading about how the boys set up and managed their small society. (Naturally there is some conflict between the English boys and the French ones.) This is a great books for boys -- clever inventions, hunting and shooting, a wonderful cave dwelling, and taking responsibility for one's actions.

And pirates!

এই উত্তর খুঁজতে ডুব দিয়েছিলাম জুলভার্নের Adrift in the Pacific এ।
