Hands down, the WEIRDEST book I've read this year, but I'm not ashamed to admit that I enjoyed it. A great debut, and I recommend this to anyone who is as weird as me!
Hands down the most bizarre story line I have ever read.
I couldn’t take this seriously. I do not think someone could. Or so I thought ... because I've just saw all 4 and 5 Stars reviews. Am I high?
I don’t regret reading it though. It was an interesting read from the point of view to what extent someone can let their mind go freakish wild and insane. I am talking here about taking imagination to a trip to Mushroomland.
It’s a shame his kinky was that ridiculous otherwise the story might have worked for me. Olivia’s character was very convincing as a single Mom struggling with real life.
AND THAT WAS IT.
I didn’t like the story but I’ll give it 2 Stars because somehow it got me wrapped in this bizarre web and I couldn’t stop reading it.
Ok the blurb is vague - very vague and of course with that vagueness it is going to hook you isn't it? Its there for a reason to make you read this book.
Sex, love, loyalty, and betrayal. Not in that order...........
So I started this with interest as clearly it hooked a lot of readers and lots of 5stars.
******Spoilers Ahead*******
The lay of the story begins with Amelia and her friend Morgan having a conversation in the hospital canteen. Their discussion? Morgan is unable to have the big O during sex or oral stimulation.
What they don't know is that their conversation is overheard by the new owner of Mercy - Maxwell Kingston (Max).
Morgan soon finds out that due to the take over, her role is being made redundant and finds herself being manipulated into accepting a 10 grand reduction in salary to stay at Mercy. (This is where I started rolling my eyes and having issues with the plot - because this wouldn't happen in real life but this is fiction) so she takes the severance pay (only three months) and leaves.
As a single Mum to two children, this is a disaster, she is up to her neck in debt and doesn't know how she will manage. Enter Max Kingston - job offer in hand and what a job offer it was. Very lucrative but one of the most craziest, bizarre offers that I read in a piece of fiction (rolling eyes). Before Max reveals the full details of this offer and the conditions it carries, Morgan must sign an NDA which she does.
The offer - three thousand to start with, new car, a 5 day week, a deposit 10 grand monthly. Doing what you might ask? Well you remember that conversation in the canteen? The lack of the Big O? Yep, he believes Morgan is the right candidate to deliver his therapeutic needs especially as she doesn't orgasm during direct stimulation of her do dah!
So what does she need to do (well this is where I started laughing out loud - not sure whether I was meant to but couldn't help myself) Well, many of us suffer from stress and so does Max - he doesn't sleep. In order to help him sleep and relieve his stress he needs to suckle - yeah not breast suckling - "toes" she asks? nope not toes.............
The big reveal - Max and his wife Sophie (yeah he's married) have been married for 8 years and to relieve his stress and deliver his therapeutic needs he must partake oral sex to fall asleep. His wife can no longer satisfy his oral desires. Its the only form of relaxation that works for him. Of course Max has rules that Morgan needs to abide to -and no worries from his wife - she fully endorses his therapeutic needs and his job offer to Morgan. Yes this overgrown perverted baby needs to "go down" on her in order to fall asleep.
What transpires after this is one of the most bizarre plots I have come across - she is primped, primed and painted (but no sex will take place) and despite signing an NDA every Tom, Dick and Harry knows that "something is going on with the Kingston's and Morgan.
Take this as you find it and no disrespect to the 5 star ratings - but seriously? It just squeezed a 2 star rating from me. There were too many questionable aspects to the ridiculous plot and there was absolutely no connection with these two characters - clinical will best describe their relationship. I honestly don't know whether this book was meant to be funny but it did provide me with a number of eye rolling, belly laughs.
Overall a predictable end leading into the continuation of their bizarre relationship in book 2 which has a publish date October 2017.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
WOW! I can't believe this is a debut novel. I didn't know anything about this story, or the author, before one-clicking, but OMG am I glad that I took that chance. Everybody always says that they don't like stories that are predictable, and if this book is anything, it's definitely far from predictable. NOTHING like it on the market. That's for sure. (Lol. You'll know why after you read it)) I NEED THE NEXT BOOK STAT!!! Do yourself a favor, and look up Olivian Pope. I'm off to go stalk her on social media, and see when the next book comes out.
She, the Kingdom is very well done for a debut novel. I had never heard of Olivian Pope before another author recommended this book. But I was in a reading slump and the price was right. I didn't really expect to love it as much as I did. But before I knew it, I was 70% in and very invested in where the story was going. Morgan is very relatable as a single mom, struggling to make ends meet already, when the hospital she works for gets bought out and the new owner lays her off. He just so happens to be filthy rich and incredibly sexy with a major quirk he's willing to pay big bucks to satisfy.
I highly recommend this book, and I will be watching for any future releases from Olivian Pope.
So I was originally turned on to this book because it is rumored that Jamie McGuire wrote it under the pen name of Olivian Pope. I personally did not see the resemblance, but maybe I am missing something.
First, I must say that the book wasn't horrible, it was just okay for me. The story line was a little, okay A LOT odd and at times the pace at which things happened seemed really fast. I am not sure what else to say about it, and I am not sure if I would pick up the second book to see how it ends.
I won't lie, the starting of this book and the storyline had me laughing, but in a "this is utterly ridiculous" sort of way...yet, I was unable to put it down! The concept was so far-fetched that it intrigued me enough to continue, and if you can grip me through an idea like this, then Olivian Pope is more than alright in my books. This debut author is going places, and I'm jumping on her disturbed train. Choo-choo!
4,75* It was really great first book by this debut author. I was pleasantly surprised with this story. It was beautiful modern fairytale with some “kinky” things and I couldn’t be happier to read it. I hope that the next book will be out soon.
This was the strangest book I have read in a while. But there has been a buzz about this debut author and her book all week. When I began, I knew nothing about the book. The blurb did not reveal too much:
Sex, love, loyalty, and betrayal. Not in that order.
Ok. I’m in…..
Morgan Clarke, divorced single parent and finance director at a small town hospital gets a pink slip after the hospital is taken oven. Enter Maxwell Kingston who provided that pink slip. Max is intense, rich and powerful.
Max shows up on Morgan’s doorstep with a proposal and an NDA……
So, I don’t want to ruin the book so I won’t tell you what his proposal is. I will say it is not one that I had read before. I was literally like “huh?” then “seriously!” It was bizarre. I almost stopped, but I pushed through a chapter or so and, it worked. It really, kind of, sort of, worked!
The writing is smooth and flowing. As I said earlier it is not like anything else I have read. With that I say, dive in, get over the “what!” and don’t spoil it for others, hehe….
I actually really enjoyed this book. Despite the wacky and weird story line and "predicament" that Morgan is faced with, I thoroughly enjoyed reading She, The Kingdom. I don't read blurbs but this one actually sold me.
Although some of the things were a little too rushed and instantaneous for me, I couldn't put the book down. Let me explain why...
For a debut author, this writing was off the charts. I'm talking incredible. It wasn't boring it wasn't over detailed and dramatic. It flowed so nicely I could not stop reading no matter what was happening.
The story line is...for lack of a better word strange and different. But I'm not one to judge because I devoured it nonetheless.
I don't usually like reading books that will have a sequel BUT GIVE IT TO ME NOW. I'm watching you Olivian. You haven't met me yet but once you do you will realize I'm like a disease you can't rid of.
Wow it is really hard to believe that this is a debut book from an unknown author. The writing is smooth and your swept up with the characters right from the beginning. Waiting for the next book is going to be agonizing. There were a couple of moments that felt a little too rushed for me but I find that happens when authors have so much to get out in only so many pages! I will definitely be looking for more books from this author and will be stalking to find out more about who Olivian is.
Wow. Wow. Wow. The description says it all. A wild ride page turner of a book. I enjoyed it very much and can describe it best as a little 50 shades a little Nicholas Sparks. A really good story and very well written. I highly recommend it.
I went into this story blind and was so pleasantly surprised. For a debut author, Olivian has an amazing skill at story telling. can't wait to read more of her work!
laughing it loud ;) i give credit to the author for putting this story together. it was oiytageous!! i wasnt expecting the plot. it was so weird but im actually looking forward to book 2
ETA: it’s been a year since I’ve read this and I still am thinking about it and have read it a second time. I am going to read the second book whenever it’s released and I am looking forward to see what happens.
Heard about this book so I thought I would give it a try. I did read it in one sitting and enjoying it for the most part. I liked the characters and the story line premise. My issues were that it moved way to fast and that it was an instant love story. Well for me that's how it came across. I think this could of been so much more if the pace of the story was slowed down some. I'm not sure if I'll read the next book or not. I still don't know how I feel about his "need". It confuses me. I do think you should try this though if you think it sounds good. This might be a "it's me not the book" problem.
I'm going to agree with all the other reviews I've seen for this book and say the writing is phenomenal! You definitely can't tell this is Olivian's debut novel (and that's a good thing!)
The story is very different. I went in not knowing anything, as there is no real blurb for this story. The moment I figured out what direction the story was headed in, I thought it was weird. Probably one of the weirdest plots I've heard. That being said I was also still very, very intrigued to finish reading.
I really enjoyed this story. It was refreshing, well written, and interesting. I read it in one sitting. Can't wait to read more by this author!
Wow!!! I read this book on a recommendation. I was hesitant at first but then once I heard other people talking about it, I couldn't resist! Can I say it again??? WOW!!! Completely blown away. This book was like no other book I've read. Do yourself a favor and read it! Where has Olivian Pope been all our lives?
Very well written book, that was suggested by a friend to me. Read it in one sitting. I loved the Dialoges, characters were complex and well developed and the Plot with its twists. I enjoyed the Story , the only negativ thing i found was that it was a bit predictable. Over all a great read and certainly will buy more by the author.
A lot of my friends have read this one so I of course I one clicked it by myself and I can see why they all loved it so much! Some things are a little too rushed for me but it´s still a great novel from a debut author and I can´t wait to read the next one!
This novel is creative and artfully written. The theme is well thought out and not a weak character in sight. I am impressed and ready for more! Max and Morgan are my new favorite couple!
This book was good but definitely kind of a weird story line. I liked going in blind not really knowing what it was about but after I started reading all I could think to myself was...Wait what? i can't wait for the 2nd book though!
This book has some weird shit going on ,it's just plain weird . Was this book a bet ? I don't know but i won't be looking out for the next instalment sorry Ms Pope x I'll stick with the Maddox boys x Ps another apocalypse inspired novel would be great
Couldn't put this book down! At first I was a little mind fucked, but the next time I looked up, I was on the last page! Can't believe this is a debut author! There isn't a book like this out there!
Let me start off by saying this was a 5 star read for me. The story is going to stay with me for a long time. It was published a bit ago, and I just really hope Pope is writing the continuation of this story because I am a fan!
This novel had me absolutely enthralled! I came upon this book through a recommendation from a book group I belong to. I went into it blindly. I’m so glad I did because as the plot played out, I couldn’t stop the myriad of emotions I felt. When one of the main plot points was revealed, I laughed so hard. Shocked but also curious to read what would happen next!
Morgan is a single mother in a small town, struggling to make end’s meet for herself and her children, with an ex husband who can’t afford to make child support payments. She works at the local hospital.
Max is a rich businessman, who happened to take over the local hospital in the small Kansan town becoming Morgan’s boss.
Morgan and Max’s lives become deeply intertwined after Max offers her an opportunity she can’t say no to as strange and unconventional as it is.
There were some grammatical mistakes, but they were not consistent nor overly glaring. Nothing to turn me off from continuing to read. I thought Pope did an incredible job fleshing out the main characters and the small town they’re living in.
Love, betrayal, and secrets come to light and lives change forever.
I’m completely taken aback that this book has received so many 4 & 5 star ratings. I read this book because I have a feeling it is written under a pen name of one of my favorite authors. The plot is the most bizarre insane plot in the history of plots ever. I’m not sure how anyone was expected to enjoy it. I’m glad others did though. For me, I was uncomfortable reading it & I couldn’t connect with any of the characters. With excellent storytelling I can get behind an odd plot and for that reason & the fact I believed a top author of mine wrote it, I touched it out. Every last page. But this just didn’t do it for. One thing I will say, this book is one of a kind. You won’t find a plot like this anywhere else.
The premise of this book was so strange. I was struck dumb upon reading it...like...😳 What did he just say?! Not your typical billionaire asks you to sign an NDA book. I did end up liking it. The writing was really good. But I didn’t really feel that connected to the characters and I’m not sure I liked the ending. I was hoping that it would go in a different direction and the whole time knew that it wouldn’t. Definitely worth the read. And when the next one comes out, I’ll probably read that one too.
