"An author who has remained on my 'must-buy' list for years." --Romance Reviews Today
"There should be a notice on her books: For a really GOOD time, read Stephanie Bond!" --America Online Romance Fiction Forum
USA TODAY bestselling author Stephanie Bond was seven years deep into a systems engineering career and pursuing an MBA at night when an instructor remarked that she had a flair for writing and suggested that she submit to academic journals. But Stephanie, a voracious reader, was only interested in writing fiction–more specifically, romantic fiction.
Upon completing her master’s degree and with no formal training in writing (her undergraduate degree is in computer programming), she started writing a romance novel in her spare time. Two years later in 1995 she sold her first manuscript, a romantic comedy, to Harlequin Books.
In 1997, with ten sales under her belt to two publishers, Stephanie left her corporate job to write women’s romantic fiction full-time. In 2011,
Stephanie launched a self-publishing business. Since that time, she has sold more than 1 million copies of her own books. To-date, Stephanie has published over 70 novels and has over 6 million copies of her work in worldwide distribution in numerous languages and formats.
This kindle e-book novella is from my Kindle Unlimited account book 6 of 6.
Marigold is awake and is dealing with everything that she has headed while in the coma. She steadily recovers and helps several individuals. She is released from the hospital going home, great ending.
I would recommend this series and others by Stephanie Bond to readers looking for something different and enjoyable. 2024
Well I have been reading Coma Girl since the very first book was released. Each book goes way too quickly. I think it is a great format and a fascinating idea. To say that I waited patiently for the next installment each month would be a total lie. I couldn't stand waiting...I wanted to know what happened next and right away! But now that it is over, I wish it wasn't. I think that is an indication of a good book~one that you don't want to end!
But wow! What an ending. Each time someone asked Marigold if she heard them when she was in a coma, I wanted her to say heck yes! Or I remember what you did or something so those people would realize how badly they had acted... But not sweet Marigold. 6 months in a coma, forced to listen and never able to respond or see, she remained a wonderful sister, daughter, friend, and acquaintance! No criticism or condemnation. In fact, she gives her sister a chance by sacrificing her financial future. I liked how she accepted help from her friend Rosemary and never said anything about missing things that had been sent to her. She was happy to share. She realizes how lucky she really is, and that is the best lesson anyone can ever learn in life!
The author kept relating the good and the bad in Marigold's life. She didn't make everything ok once the pregnancy was discovered. She didn't make Duncan immediately return to Marigold when he came back in the country. I admire her ability to tell the story and not rush to the end. But I really admire the zinger that she dealt Marigold and the readers at the last possible moment! I didn't see that coming!!!
I have to recommend this series of books highly. Every possible emotion is encountered and dealt with within the six months timeline. It is a story from start to finish that will stay with you for a very long time. This happens to be one of my favorite authors, but this story is definitely one of her best! Read it!!!! NOW!~what are you waiting for?
The books (6 in all) are told month by month. Each one reveals details about Marigold, her family, the accident, her visitors (and their stories) the life in the hospital and total dependence on everyone else. The series is extremely well written and haunting. It will stay with you long after you read the last word. Hopefully it will change you for the better as well. I recommend this to all ages.
I did enjoyed this set of books. They move right along and gives one the insight in to life itself. Always count your blessings and some times something isn't that bad after all. Above everything always be thankful for what you do have.
An entertaining ending with a surprise twist to the Coma Girl serial. I loved that the author got one over on me. Marigold was a fun heroine to follow and even while in a coma for 80% of the series, I never tired of her commentary and observations. The rash of visitors, hospital staff, and various people working on her case, were fun diversions to her static state.
I loved not only the story of Coma Girl, but also the serial format. I read it in the monthly form rather than daily, and was left on pins and needles at the end of each month. It was sometimes an agonizing wait, but there was also something sweetly old fashioned about it in the age of binge watching and instant everything. Marigold's story was worth the wait. I have been a fan of Stephanie Bond's books for quite some time. I'm so glad her vision of Coma Girl finally came to fruition, and that she enjoyed the process enough to have another serial up her sleeve for us in the future. Meanwhile, if you missed out on Coma Girl, cheaters, you can read it now without the waiting.
I am so glad I read this. The story of Coma Girl has kept me riveted for the last few days. This final installment was worth the wait. I won't give away the surprise ending but I actually cried. Kudos to the author for taking a great concept and really running with it. You won't be sorry you read this.
Disclaimer: I read the Temp Girl before this one, but Coma Girl was immensely more satisfying. Also I read all the six books at once and hence it felt like a wholesome meal, I would have gone crazy waiting for some of the twists in book 2 and book 3 :)
What i liked:- 1) The format obviously, every book being serialized made for short absorbing reads. The sentiments in the books were palpable and it was like tiny sized bites of goodness 2) Marigold aka Coma Girl is a star, she is so likeable, funny, snarky and you love to be inside her head and observe the happenings of the different visitors. You go on a journey with her 3) The characters, everybody who is a visitor makes a mark (esp. the special surprise in the end of book 6 was poignant) the parents, the dysfunctional nature made you angry sometimes at how they sort of treated Marigold but you could sense they all loved her and wanted her to become alright I specially loved Dr. Jarvis, Jack Terry (who makes an apperance), Gina, Christina, Roberta and Aunt Winnie. The author even made you care about the fellow patients in that ward!
What I didn't like:- I got.. nothing. I honestly loved the way the book wrapped up. It was dramatic, sure, but the author takes a dig at that as well.
Full points and goes into my favorites shelf. Each of the book deserves 5 stars and more!
Completed the entire series and loved it. I had planned on alternating one of this series’ books with another book on my to read list, but didn’t want it to end. So I read the 6 books consecutively , since each book kept me hanging and wanting more.
I loved this whole series. I was invigorating. I thought it would be a little boring her being in a coma but it was very entertaining and surprising with lots of side stories.
Wow, what a wonderful way to end this series. I so loved this series. It made me laugh, mad, cry, and happy. Coma Girl is a must read. Once you pick up part 1 , you can't stop reading . It was great to see old friends ... Detective Jack Terry. The surprises, twist and turns, the shock factor, and heart warming just keeps glued to this book.
Marigold was in a car accident that put her in a coma. She can hear everything going on around her. All her visitors confess their sins and shenanigans to her. All while Marigold is trying to wake up. From her kooky aunt and her so called psychic to her old co worker with marital problems. The cast of characters alone. Oh my .... The doctor find out Marigold is pregnant. So now Marigold is not just fighting for herself but for her baby. In the meantime the police and DA. Are trying to prove Keith Young a pro football player caused the accident that put Marigold in a coma. Only Marigold has the answers to the truth was happened. Marigold has to fight to keep her and baby alive.
Don't want to give too much away but like I said a must read.
I fell for Stephanie with her Body Movers series. When I first saw the title Coma Girl I wasn't so sure about this one. I mean how interesting can it be coming from a coma patients point of view? Boy was I wrong. She expertly draws you in with a little mystery, quirky characters and a few good laughs. I also liked how a certain detective from another story fit right in. Bravo Stephanie you did it again.
As always - greatest series eva! Book 5 had parts that made a frog appear in my throat and something liquid was coming out of my eyes! lol.
This, like Stephanie’s other series, was good from the first sentence to the last drop. Riveting! I don’t think I’ve ever used the word riveting in a book review. Breaking down each book in 100 pages made it easier to read. I can’t imagine reading nearly 600 pages for one single book. Ugh. Plus, the suspense while waiting to get to the next book was as profound as the last. Stephanie is so creative and the originality of her books is ⭐️ 🌟 💫 🌟 ⭐️ (Ya, I talk about Stephanie using her first name, like she’s my own friend. lol.)
I like the way she wrapped everything up and made it all come together. I wouldn’t have done it the same way; however, if I were writing this… ha, let’s face it, I wouldn’t know the first thing about writing a book! Leave it to the pros. 😊 Stephanie’s ending is so much better than I could have imagined it for myself.
Oh! And I didn’t mention it, so I will now - this series is available for FREE if you have a Kindle Unlimited membership. Greatest investment I’ve ever made considering I average reading one book a day. Once upon a time before Kindle I’d order books through a site called half dot com. The books were cheap, but when purchasing a few a week, that adds up and since I didn’t always have the money I’d actually read certain more than once. In fact, one series in particular I’ve read at least 10 times! (It’s the Mitford series by J Karon, btw).
Ok, so anyway, enough talking or I guess I should say NOT talking about the Coma Girl series. Hey, I can’t help it if I use my reviews as a place to blog my life. lol. How about this?… just read this series and Stephanie’s Elevator Girl! You won’t regret it! It’ll exercise your brain trying to come up with different ways Stephanie may go in her writing. Believe me, you won’t guess.
Good great fantastic! Although I want to dive into another of her many 6 part series, I’m going to get to my list of “Books to Read” now. Stephanie, I won’t forget about you; I’ll return eventually. I want to read Graveyard Girl, so that’ll be the next series of yours that I read.
Next I’m going to continue with Cindy Bell’s A Little Leaf Creek Cozy Mystery series that I’ve been keeping up with: Book 24 that was just published a week ago on 10/24/24, “Skeletons in Little Leaf Creek.”
PS - please tell me I’m not the only one who hears the song “Girlfriend in a Coma” by The Smiths in their head every time they see this book cover?
See ya in my next review/blog(?)! Deuces to your cabooses!
In A Nutshell:Marigold Kemp is in a coma following a car crash. Marigold can hear, but nobody knows that for sure. So, it leads to a fantastic cast of characters including her dysfunctional family, crazy friends, members of the justice system and hospital staff letting their emotional guard down. You will laugh, perhaps shed a tear, but Coma Girl will enthral readers. Clever, funny and thought-provoking.
The Protagonist(s):Marigold Kemp is the middle child in a family of three. And so in many ways, Marigold appears the forgotten child. Her elder brother is a war hero and her younger sister the brain box. Written in the first person, Marigold aka Coma Girl gets to hear all sorts of secrets and confessions which she processes with dry humour.
I have covered Coma Girl 1 -5 here and they are a five star read. The stories are so addictive I just had to keep on going. However, although the concept remains novel, the ending is disappointing. It is too nice and lacks the humour of the previous five novels.
Nonetheless, Coma Girl is a novel concept that might sound boring but is anything but! Highly recommended
Book Rating Sexual Content: U Language: U Violent: U Would I read the next one or reread ?: Yes
My rating system (* = star) 0* Could not finish this book (waste of time) 1*Finished the book but didn't like it not fulfilled 2* Finished the book it was okay. 3* A good read worth your time. 4* An excellent read often with a novel concept or unusual plot. 5* A magnificent read. A prominent example of the genre.
So if I realized there was an all in one edition I so would have read that, because I binge read all these serials in one sleepless night. As such I'm going to just talk about my thoughts on the whole rather than the individual.
This series is hilarious and the cast of characters is what makes it so because the entire series is told from the point of view of the coma victim while she's in a coma and the things she hears. And oh, does she ever hear things, there's her dysfunctional family with their left and right confessions, the detective on her case with the crazy romance issues, the fraudulent psychic who has occasional insights, the murderous nun, the inner hospital romances, and so many more. Honestly, if it's not one thing it's another.
Though all this craziness we get to hear Marigold's opinions on everything and she's hilarious, I absolutely loved her. The story while being funny still manages to pull at your heart strings when you're left wondering from time to time if Marigold will make it and if she'll ever wake up. Bond creates this sense of attachment to Marigold that would have made losing her, even in print, like losing a close friend. I honestly thing I was more invested in Marigold's survival and waking up than her fictional parents were.
The final serial is what happens after she wakes up, but if I'm honest it only shows a glimpse of new beginnings and I am dying to know more which is why I'm not offering a perfect rating. That said, the serials are excellent and highly recommended.
>Book Review – Coma Girl >I am an independent reviewer. These books are a 6 part serial that ends in an HEA. Marigold is mentally alert, but stuck in a coma. As she gets visitors, they begin to unburden themselves and she learns TMI about her entire family, friends and even strangers. The story is both heartwarming and heart breaking. There is an unusual amount of humor, especially with Marigold’s aunt Winnie and her wanna be psychic friend who is more miss than hit. >The book also highlights the kindness of strangers. There is a little girl, especially, who seems to know exactly when Marigold needs a little mental pick-me-up. There are also instances of incredible cruelty, as some hospital workers refer to Marigold’s room and roommates as the “vegetable patch”. >Social media takes off, creating an internet sensation with “Coma Girl”. Along with all of this attention, the reality of the crazies really is quite scary. The scenes where Marigold attempts to communicate were poignant. The whole experience creates a new outlook for Marigold, as secrets are revealed. I had a different HEA in mind for her, though. >These books are appropriate for an adult audience. I am giving the serial 5 stars. The story is a quick read and so very entertaining.
Although the ASIN points to the last part of a six-part novel, this review is for all parts put together. When I got the free first part, I didn’t know that this novel would be given piecemeal to the reader. Most books in a series are sold as a stand-alone, each; otherwise, they run the risk of losing readers.
Thus, here comes my one objection to the way such a delightful story is sold. An average-length e-book is around 300 pages and in Coma Girl, each part is about 90 Kindle pages with a few pages in each part to remind the reader of the earlier occurrences which became tiresome since I read all six parts one after the other. I’d rather have read the whole story within one book, no matter the price.
Still, I was hooked on Coma Girl due to its brilliant concept and good storytelling. Fact is, I truly enjoyed reading the story of Marigold Kemp as she lay in a bed in the hospital and heard all goings on around her. Marigold is hospitalized because the car she was in was hit head-on by a famous football player. Her sister Sidney was in the car, also, and she isn’t hurt at all.
Until the end, the readers are made to believe that the driver was Marigold. More than the ending of the story, the ward Marigold is in, its other occupants, and all the people in Marigold’s life who visit and treat her are the highlights of the story. The one thing that is common with her visitors and caretakers is their frank talk about their secrets because they think Marigold cannot hear them. This way, the readers are given the privilege of observing the inner workings of each person, and that is the unique success of this story.
Although the story contains all human emotions from regret, greed, revenge, unrequited love, friendship, and innocence, I favored the little girl who keeps sneaking into the ward to talk to Marigold. Other original characters in the story are Marigold’s parents, her brother overseas with the US forces, the doctor who believes Marigold could wake up, the doctors and staff that care for her, Aunt Winnie and her fumbling psychic, Detective Terry, the poet volunteer, and Marigold’s two friends with similarities to each other and whose names rhyme and have the same number of characters in each name. One of those is Roberta, her roommate, who tries to help Marigold in her warped way. The common bond among all characters is that they are unique, quirky, and delightful to read about. In fact, the characters make this novel a success.
The entire novel is entertaining and captivating, and the twists in the story come often and with delightful and unexpected surprises. The writing style is clear, direct, yet with clever pathos and great humor.
I love to binge read, and nothing beats binge reading a completed series. Stephanie Bond is a new author for me. I came across her name on a Facebook post of author recommendations. When I read the blurb for Coma Girl, I was interested, but a little hesistant. Hesistant, because knowing the heroine was in a coma there would be a lot of inner monologue, which can cause a story to drag. I'm happy to report that was definitely not the case. Marigold was charming, witty, and at times philosophical. I liked the fact that she seemed to be and ordinary girl, living an ordinary life when all of a sudden tradgedy strikes.
What made this a 5-Star series for me was the way the author handled the subplots of Marigold's family, friends, and people she encounters while in the hospital. With so many secondary characters, it's easy to get lost and confused. Ms. Bond did and excellent job of not letting Marigold's story get lost during the twist and turns in the book.
So, if you like serials and like to binge read, then add the Coma Girl series to your tbr.
Who should think that a one person point of view from someone who can't di anything but listen and think who should so interesting? Reminds me of movies and plays like Bus Stop and California Suite where the location stays the same but each new visitor brings a totally different story to the table. And Stephanie Bond is greatly adept away knowing what to leave in and what to take out to make the story move and rope us in without having us endure the bitter boredom and travesty of being stuck idle in a bed, having to listen to classical music on a continuous loop of the same songs and not being able to turn it off. And the main character has an interesting snark and way about her as well in her commentary about what's happening around her. I enjoyed this even more than Gone Girl for its ability to surprise me, give me twists, be cutting edge on technology, and give me a whole ton of characters to pull for. Just an incredible book.
Coma Girl is a 6 part serial following Marigold Kemp as she tries to recover from a serious head injury caused by a car accident. Marigold has visitors who aren't certain that they can be heard, so the interactions with her in a vegetative state is...interesting.
I really enjoyed the concept of this serial. Each installment was a month in the ward. The things Marigold became a witness to were sometimes heartbreaking but many times hilarious. I found this story entertaining and refreshing. It was also interesting that there was little if any description for the characters, so it allowed my imagination to run wild. Cool concept, nice ending. I wondered who the TMZ person was. Maybe offer a boxset??
This is part 6 of 6 part daily serial, part six is the month of December and is the final part to bring the serial to an end.
I have absolutely loved the concept of this daily serial, a girl in a coma after an unfortunate traffic accident, able to hear all the conversations of family, friends, police, doctors, medical staff & anyone else that decides to visit, without any of them realising that she can hear everything.
So that is it, the end of the daily serial, and what fun it has been, highly entertaining and funny in places not to mention shocking moments too. I can honestly say that I have enjoyed this, very different to what I usually read so a nice break.
If has definitely made me what to read more books by this author for sure.
This review includes the entire novella collection. Another fun and interesting take on what it would be like if you were in a coma and could hear every conversation but could not communicate. Our main character has been in a car accident and had TBI. She is in long term care for coma victims called "the vegetable patch". She becomes a social media star know as COMA GIRL. This is due impart to the fact that the person accused of being drunk and hitting her car is an football player. It is interesting who comes to see her and what they say. Lots of confession of past wrong doings and secrets to a girl who they think can't hear and do not know if she will wake up and tell. The series starts off a little slow as you have to have back story, but gets better towards the end.
When I searched Amazon for "romantic comedies," I didn't expect I'd be reading about a young girl in a coma. Oh how I'm delighted for the many wonderful reviews that turned this book on for me. I typically read romance novels and over and over and over again the entire story plot is predictable...thus why I searched for "romantic comedies..." I wanted a little change in the storyline, or hoped for one. Needless to say, per the title, this is a wonderful change--the only issue is, I'm sad I've finished them. On another note, I enjoyed how they were short reads. I highly recommend this series to everyone.
Overall I found this story enjoyable. It was very interesting to learn what all Coma girl learned over the span of the 6 months that she was in the coma. I liked the way that she came into her more recent memories in a slow and controlled way. This kept the mystery alive a little longer. I was always suspicious or what Sidney was hiding and glad to know at the end that I figured at least part of it out. I did like the way she used the knowledge she gained to do good and not harm. I probably would have rated it higher if it had all been in one book instead of me having to buy 6 short novelettes to get the whole story.
I read the Temp Girl before this Coma Girl series. Both have similar formats which is each chapter is a day in her life. I love it! I find myself not being able to put down the Coma Girl series more than the Temp Girl, because I was so rooting for Marigold. I also think the author dove deeper into the characters in Coma Girl. I’m not huge on the ending. Too perfect. Just like Temp Girl’s ending. Not everything has to be going right for her. I also didn’t buy it when Duncan came back to her. But overall, it was a fun series to read.
