In the Silks started off pretty good. Though I did have issues with Henry from the beginning. Unfortunately, my interest petered out at lightning speed and neither the plot nor the characters succeeded in gripping me. I felt way too indifferent, mainly because it came off as too monotonous. Nothing really remarkable happened. On the other hand, it is possible that an author can catch my attention with a rather quiet storyline if it's well done.

Be that as it may, Henry was too angsty, uptight and insecure and Ryan didn't really elicit any emotion from me either except resentment. He has a rich daddy who spoils him (he bought him an expensive and huge loft) and an entire loving family who really cares for him, yet he's fucking around with drugs for recreational purposes. Yeah, right. The argument of a bad childhood and mean parents that are usually to blame for when a character is starting doing drugs doesn't hold up this time around. Meaning, Ryan came off as a pathetic piece of ass and I was past caring to find out what made him sniff, swallow and smoke at any convenient moment. Henry's family made a nice enough impression on me. Instead of hiding and lying, Henry should have come clean.

Also, In the Silks is suffering from huge editing issues, i.e. severe problems with punctuation (absent or misplaced commas etc.), missing words, misplaced words and misspelled words. I'm not a professional at all and English isn't my mother tongue either. Yet I'm sure that any editing Nazi is going to shred this book to pieces.

Yes, I'm quoting again, just to bring my point across. There is no need to get your panties in a twist. Thank you.

Examples for your perusal (I quote word for word):

SITUATION AS PER JULY 20, 2015:

"No, fuck that. Say your peace."

Ryan kissed Henry's skin were he had bitten.

He wanted to Henry to be buried deep inside him.

Ryan started laughing and pushing Henry off him knelt up to reach the drawer.

Ryan went and got to glasses of ice water for them.

"Come on, it will be fun, are telling me you have never had phone sex before?"

"And your quiet, subdued, but you know what I think, Henry?"

"Mom, I love you and I know that you're heart is in the right place, but you have to stop.(…)"

"It was a really goodnight, despite (…)"

"What, you got there?"

"Thank you for bringing all this you didn't have to do that. (…)"

He tried tone down the disappoint that had to be evident in his voice.

"What's there to think about? Mr. High and Mighty, just walked out. You have nothing else going on, do you?" Kev, asked sipping his coffee.

"Chill out, Ryan I'm not trying to get in your business or anything but…"

He could be pissed at Henry all he wanted but if they started talking smack, there was going to problem.

This is your home, but I have a feeling your avoiding someone or something and you know how I feel about that.

There were two messages from Ryan the first one read: (…)

He was scared to share all of his secrets and short comings with (…)

Then he went to bed with the help of some Tylenol p.m. hoping to quell the dull headache that had been dogging him most of the day and night.

He also wasn't sure that Tara wasn't still prepared to rip his head off that was a very good possibility.

He refused to text or call, him, he was too pissed.

Ryan didn't respond he just let go of the door and shuffled back to his room.

He took Ryan's keys and went to the grocery store, there was shit in his fridge He had a large back pack to carry everything in.

"Every thing's good. (…)

He smile though, it lit up the room.

The ridiculous and tedious texts (har har):

Henry: Is that a good thing??
Ryan: Oh yeahhh
Henry: Killing.Me.
Ryan: Lol, you're blushing right now aren't u?!?!
Henry: Anywayyyyy what are you doing now?
Ryan: Talking to you
Henry: Smart ass
Ryan: what r u doin
Henry: Waiting for a fax+thinking about you
Ryan: Oh yeah? How's that working out for ya?
Henry: Sooo NSFW
Ryan: lmao, true juvenile probation officers with hard-ons, not good!
Henry: NOPE!!!!
Ryan: Okay well I'll let you get back to it. Dinner tonight at my place? And dessert…yummmm bring your appetite ;-)
Henry: Killing. Me. I'll be there, I'm starving already
Ryan: Bye xoxo
Henry: Bye xoxo

Quite often they did end their texts with xoxo.
These two didn't struck me as flamboyant. So the xoxo felt weird.

Ryan: r u still out?
Henry: no im home
Ryan: I thought u were going to text me
Henry: haven't been here long
Ryan: I c, I have a ??
Henry: shoot
Ryan hehe
Henry: seriously? Lmao
Ryan: don't lmao, I like that ass too much
Henry: good to know
Henry: ?
Ryan: I have some friends coming from nyc for a few days would u come out with us this weekend
Henry: sure
Ryan: cool so how cum u didn't message me
(…)

Ryan: hey u, I'm going back to ct. For a few days
Henry: ok just call me when you get back
Ryan: I can't talk to you until I cum back??? Lol
Henry: I'm going to assume that you misspelled that word on purpose
Ryan: I have to go home with a g-rated tongue ring when I go home sooooo, I'll have to express my dirty thoughts through text messages until I CUM back
Henry: I see lol
(…)

Ryan: I was thinking about u and the other night on my sofa, and the night before that. Oh and the night of my party. Even that night back in college.
Henry: please I'm begging u, im at work.
Ryan: r u trying to tell me u r hard? Yeah probably not good when u work with teenagers.
Henry: Definitely Not! Didn't we have this convo?? lol
Ryan: okay okay, I'll let u get back to work, ttyl
Henry: yes later :-)

So, between the closeted and awkward worrier, the drunken and drugged artist, all the redundant sex (including the very bad phone sex), constant hard-ons, the arousal permeating the pages, the tedious winking, the laughing, the terribly annoying and hackneyed texts *cue eye roll*, and the awfully shoddy editing job, I ended up completely and utterly bored. Oh, let's not forget annoyed. I.Was.So.Effin'.Annoyed. Also, I wanted less sex and more artistic performances.

Bottom line
While the very beautiful cover deserves easily five stars, the book itself is absolutely forgettable and a plain disappointment.

Movin' on…

2.5 Stars ~ I didn’t love it and I didn’t hate it. ‘In the Silks’ was kind of blah for me. The characters and the story had serious potential but I think, for me at least, the writing kind of brought me down. It was slow and dragged in a number of places to the point where I really couldn’t connect.

If you are considering buying this “book”, you should be aware it needs major revisions, not just minor editing. As an avid reader, I’ve read books I didn’t like or didn’t finish but I’ve never written a bad review criticizing the writer’s work. Even if I didn’t like the story line, the writer’s style or the characters, I figured my expectations of the book didn’t match the writer’s vision, and I left it at that.

However, In the Silks, is so poorly written I wondered if I somehow downloaded an unfinished draft of the book. While some of the sentences are written correctly, at least half of them are so poorly drafted they completely disregard any rules on grammar, sentence construction or punctuation. There are long, run on sentences with no conjunctions or transitional words. It’s as if she wrote several short sentences and removed the punctuation to make one long sentence. Often the dialogue isn’t properly incorporated into a sentence. The misuse of periods, commas, and semicolons is so prevalent it makes the book almost impossible to read. All of that is in addition to typos, missing or misspelled words.

The poor writing makes it difficult as a reader to feel any connection with the main characters. You are left wondering how the law abiding probation officer falls for the pot smoking, coke snorting, pill popping, alcoholic. Also, a good book should have a balance of details and dialogue. The details set the scene and the dialogue gives you a connection to the characters and the story. I will admit I skimmed over pages of useless information and poorly written details before I finally stopped reading the book entirely. Beyond the really nice cover, this purchase was not worth the money.

Two men trying to find themselves

This was a solid read about two men trying to find themselves in very different ways. I liked the characters and the overall story.

Review for revised 2nd Edition, 3.5 Stars

A copy was provided to me by the author for my reading pleasure in hopes of an unbiased opinion. A review was not a requirement

Henry and Ryan meet one night at a college party in their senior year. They spend just a few hours together, during which Ryan makes a move on a hesitant Henry. Their makeout session just gets heated up when roomatus-interruptus occurs and Henry flees. It's enough to save an ongoing spot in both of their spank-banks for six years. Ryan goes on to become a silk aerialist performer and Henry, a juvenile probation officer. Henry has been toeing a very "straight" line for years, attends a show with his girlfriend and finds that Ryan is a performer. After a breakup with his nasty girlfriend, Henry reaches out to Ryan online and they meet again.

The progress of the story was rather slow paced and there were numerous scenes about Henry with his family. I liked getting their dynamic and Henry did become well characterized and his sister, bother and mom were strong secondary characters. I did feel they could have been condensed together more and helped the pace of the story. It was clear that Henry's closeted status derived more from a past incident connected to his sick father, rather than family pressure. Ryan wasn't quite as strongly drawn, although his family and friends were included with some background. His situation and reasons for being in Boston were supposed to be enigmatic but it wasn't difficult to draw conclusions.

I was drawn into the story. I'm a sucker for gay-virgin sex and Lisa delivered in spades. I wanted to see what happened when Henry and Ryan discovered each other's secrets. I also wanted to see the outcome of Henry's dealings within his family. There were a few things I felt could have been developed better. I wanted to see more of Ryan coming to terms with his big problem. I feel like that was shortchanged and that Henry's reactions to it didn't quite ring true for his profession. It wasn't ignored or overlooked, I just think it could have been deeper. But I do think the actions and reactions were realistic and made both guys feel human and real.

I did take issue with a significant number of editing errors including poor punctuation and sentence structure. This was a revised version, so I don't know what the first was like. I would think that a revision would have had a great deal more editing done to make it a more easily read manuscript. I try not to ding points for editing because I know it can be a costly effort to get a story published and editing help is expensive. I had to deduct a bit in this case because it was jarring at times but not enough to be unreadable.

So if you want some mild angst, a little warm and fuzzy, with a strong HFN and can overlook some rocky sentences, it is an enjoyable read.

Ever since I first saw Cirque du Soleil, my mind has craved a story like this!

This story is Wilde's debut novel, and it is wonderful! It begins with a brief encounter between Henry and Ryan in college, and then the majority of the novel takes place several years later, after Henry comes across Ryan at a performance.

Henry has grown into a young man who has put his own needs aside in favor of being a good and reliable son. His career plans have morphed and he now works in a career where he provides support to teenagers who are trying to get back on their feet. Ryan is a performer, but he lives hard and parties harder. In the years that have passed, though their lives have changed, in some ways it seems as if both men are in a holding pattern, and when they come together again, their growth can really continue.

I was swept along in the story of these two men. I was captured from the beginning, and though I anticipated being drawn to Ryan the most, I think Henry's sweetness, compassion, and yearning to be loved really won be over in the end. His scenes with his family were so realistic, honest, and believable that I felt like I was sitting right next to him. I felt like I *knew* him and his family, and I loved their relationships.

Ryan shows such growth, and while he could easily have been written in a collection of stereotypes, Wilde creates Ryan as a complex and evolving man, and I loved watching him realizes that he had some growth to do as well. It reinforced the idea that both of these men have a chunk of their journey that they must do on their own, and yet each of them can and will support each other through the parts that they can. I really liked Ryan's continuous evolution, and I respected that his journey concluded in an original and realistic way.

The storyline moved at a great pace, and the writing was engaging and very well done. I loved the realistic dialogue and I adored reading a book that was set in my neck of the woods (Boston! woohoo!)

I would be remiss if I didn't mention that this book is also romantic and very sexy! Sex + aerial silks? Oh yea, Wilde went there...and you don't want to miss it! The sex is great and totally supports their relationship and character growth.

Don't miss this debut author's work. It was a great read, and it is highly recommended! I already have my eyes out for her next release!

I want to start by saying that M/M is not my genre of preference. When I read a M/M romance it's usually because it's book in the middle of a series, so it's imperative to read it. In The Silks is my first true M/M romance novel and I can't tell you just how captivating this story is.

I am not going to go in specifics of the book, telling you bits and pieces will give the story away. What I loved about this book is that it captures you from the beginning. How the story starts, where these characters take you and how a love story unfolds will leave you in a book hangover.

In The Silks is Ms. Wilde's novel debut. The characterization is detailed and on point. There is consistency and fluency in both the writing and story line. It's one heck of an entrance and I cannot wait to read more from this author.

This being Lisa Wilde's first book, her writing amazes me, she kept me intrigued, I kept wanting to read while I shouldn't be, due to the fact I was at work! But with Henry & Ryan I wanted to know......No I needed to know. She has a way with words that make you feel as if you are sitting there watching it happen instead of sitting on your couch or sitting at your desk reading!! I do not want to give away the story, because that would piss me off if someone did that, excuse may language. LOL But Love is Love and it is not always easy and if you love someone, sometime time helps. It is a M/M book and it is not my first, but I look forward to reading more from Lisa Wilde. So if you enjoy M/M reading go one click and if you haven't read M/M make this your first!! You will fall hard for Henry & Ryan......

I liked this book a lot. I liked her book, Army Brat, better, though. It was hard for me to really like this one for the simple fact that for most of the book, they are on the down low with Henry in the closet. I think it was hard to get into because of all the baggage they both have. I wish the author would have chosen one issue or the other. Overall, it is a good book, though. I will still definitely keep reading them.
