Alas, this title has slipped into boring soap opera mode, bringing out an old flame and a romantic rival to try to add some drama to the lives of the rather bland workaholic main couple.

I'm going to fight my compulsive completist urge and not bother with the six volumes remaining in this dull series. I'm sure it's just more of the same old tropes until the inevitable happy ending, just as I'm sure I can find a series that does the same thing with more flair and more charismatic characters.

FOR REFERENCE:

Contents:
• Battle 11. The heart emerges from pains of the past. - Ella Wheeler Wilcox
• Battle 12. Love always takes us by surprise. - Michizo Tachihara
• Battle 13. Love is blind, and lovers cannot see the pretty follies that themselves commit. - William Shakespeare
• Battle 14. We only love women we can make happy. - Marcel Achard
• Battle 15. Love is a divine insanity. - Renaissance quote
• Bonus Story. No Smoking for Nanaryu

This series is still a real slow burn. Loving someone who doesn't want to get married is definitely a struggle when you, yourself want to get married.

Asuka is starting to second guess her relationship and whether she can be okay with never getting married. She loves Ryu but what does their future hold?

The drama is starting, but it's kind of lukewarm. I don't know what it is about this series. It just feels like it's trying too hard to be something and make a point, but it's not quite doing it. I'm not that into it, but I still want to continue reading.

This wasn't fun to read. It's readable, but not especially fun.

With Volume 3, I am finding the same cliches used create drama in a relationship: former girlfriend, good looking new rival, and circumstance creating 'great misunderstandings'. The title is very sweet and certainly I appreciate that lead character Asuka is good at what she does at the office even though she wants to be a housewife instead. But I admit I'm hoping Miyazono creates something new here to make the series fresh and interesting. There has to be something more than the premise to keep me interested.

Story: Asuka knows that Ryu isn't likely to ever marry her - despite that being her major goal in life. But it is enough for her now that he loves her and she loves him. But then Ryu has to work with the woman who created his anti-marriage feelings and Asuka has to wonder if he still cares for her. When one of Asuka's coworkers proposes to her and offers all that she had wanted in a relationship, she has to wonder if she is making the right choice to stay with Ryu.

The intimate and romantic scenes of the couple are very sweet and the security of their relationship is only mildly compromised by all the new drama introduced in each chapter. I also liked that when Asuka complains about the selfishness of the marriage proposal, she is called out as being selfish in her own way for requiring marriage and requiring that she be a homemaker in order to find her happiness. It was a nice turning of the tables and caused Asuka pause.

Most of the series is about interesting thoughts of what it means to be happy in a relationship. Is the woman who stays with an unfaithful husband actually happy despite her claims? Can a woman who wants one thing in a relationship but gets something else be happy? And can a man who sees only unhappiness from a union like marriage really find happiness if he marries and feels subconsciously trapped?

Included in volume 3 is a short story entitled No Smoking For Nanaryu. As much as I love Viz's josei (adult woman oriented) titles, I keep hoping for more from Everyone's Getting Married than the standard tropes. What keeps me reading is that the relationship is gentle rather than melodramatic. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

3.5/5

I like that the story feels realistic and that every character is charming in their own way. Additionally, I enjoy the different outlooks on marriage - bonded to marriage either through love, pride, or ‘mutual interests’. However, this ‘let’s get married / don’t want to get married’ back and forth from the main couple is starting to lose its appeal. You can’t go on like this for multiple volumes. I will definitely lose interest.

boring romance. just two office workers who work too much to see each other. the guy is kinda a slime ball, like sleeping w a married woman and stuff. the main character isn’t that interesting. she just works and wants to be married but then decides to date a guy who openly says he doesn’t ever want to get married. they’re already dating and having sex by like the second book so i assume the rest of the series is just petty drama until they end up married (guessing that by the cover of the last volume)

i didn’t even bother finishing this volume and then just dnf-ing the series bc i tried to read this volume for like almost a month and no single volume of manga should be that hard for me to pick up and finish.

i think maybe i’m just not a fan of the josei genre. they tend to be working women with boring lives finding love with boring men who also have boring lives. like, cmon, high school kids are having better love stories than these adults.

i picked up waiting for spring in the middle of reading this volume and i finished 3 volumes of that before finishing this one, so i think that’s my sign to drop this one.

This series just keeps on getting cuter, sweeter, and saucier as it continues! I can't wait to pick up the next volume!

What I really like about this manga series is that it is making me think. With the main characters having different wants, it provides multiple perspectives on marriage that I haven't truly thought that much about before (seeing as I am a single, 21 year old with no apparent love interest in sight). One of my favourite quotes in this volume is, "Being married doesn't guarantee happiness". It made me realise that it really doesn't, and I love the fact that it made me think.

In terms of the plot, I loved it because it was saucy, but there was also some more depth to the characters. There was jealous and insecurity but the characters got over it together. Asuka constantly makes me laugh, so I love her!

In terms of the characters, the only people that are developed are the leads, so I am interested in the story of the side characters. Hopefully we will get them soon.

I would really recommend this series if you want a light read!

I'm in Volume 4 (so this review is copy/pasted from my vol 1 review). I love it. This is what Happy Marriage?! could have been. Isumi Miyazono clearly states the characters' intentions and desires, and the characters actually talk to each like adults should. Asuka wants to be a homemaker despite forging a successful career than she clearly enjoys and takes personal pride in. She is a go-getter and speaks up for herself. Ryu is almost too-driven, but he wants to prove that he's more than a pretty face. He can do the work, and do it well. It's a clever twist of the usual gender tropes. This series also gets right down to it. So far, there's no wasted time or unnecessary panels, and the mangaka lets the panels speak, too. She trusts the reader to interpret the emotion. I wish I could rate this higher.

This story is unrealistic but I love it. I mean you know it's going to end up with the couple together but stop setting up the thought that if you date a man long enough he will change his mind and marry you. In general this is not true and unrealistic. Things are really awkward in the story as each one of the couple has another person on the fringes of their life.
Needless to say I look forward to reading the next book and trying to figure out how it is going to go. It is going to be bumpy before we get to the end. The actress and the banker are going to cause problems.

Hmm. Enter Kamiya. I don't quite understand the proposal-without-even-dating kind of thing, but I suppose it can work. Two people that have the same goal, and are very similar in many ways...I'm sure he never considered that she'd be interested in being a housewife, and now that he knows, he is very focused on her.

I don't particularly like him, but he hasn't had a lot of time to show up. He knows what he wants, and he is a confident guy. That's got it's own attraction.

The mysterious girlfriend is revealed! And the creepy co-worker that wants Asuka to marry him!

I love the miscommunication and drama in this volume. The only major wrong part was with Nanami and Asuka after the couple interview with Kamiya. Never an excuse for those kind of actions. Otherwise, the volume was good.

We seem to be reaching the point in the series where the major problems in their relationship are beginning to feed the doubt of our lead characters. I do like how the author is handling the story so far, and I am genuinely invested in them working through the tough spots. This relationship feels so real at points. I think anyone could relate to this couple in one way or another.

Lecture sympathique.

The plot thickens! Good to see that Ryu and Asuka are finally starting to consider each other's points of view more seriously, and that someone's calling them on the ways that they're both being selfish. My favorite thing about this series is definitely its groundedness and I got that in spades in this volume.

This is the part where the relationship is tested again with other characters that would love to ruin it. This focuses on Ryu and his past relationship. I actually love that we're getting to know Ryu more in terms of how he sees marriage and relationships.

But of course, would this still be a josei manga if there's no "other woman" in the picture? Lol!

a bit weaker than the last two volumes but still good! nanami is a little sketch in his approach to sex sometimes but it's pretty mild (think black bird in the later volumes) so i can roll with it

2020 Read #104

The worst thing I can say about this series is that the characters seem to go in circles about what they want and what that means in the grander schemes of their lives. They come off as wishy-washy, but I like them nonetheless.

Still cute. Still cheesy as a bowl of mac and cheese. Neither will give in and so the angst and drama continue. I am invested so now I have to see how it plays out.
