About the author

Margaret A. Hudson was born on 10 April 1943 in Bradford, Yorkshire, England, UK, of German extraction. She was daughter of Kathleen (Ramsden), an artist, and George Arthur Hudson, an architect. Married with Londoner Mike Pemberton, they have five grown children, today she lives with her husband and four small dogs in Whitstable, Kent. Apart from writing, her passions are tango, travel, English history and the English countryside.

Published since 1975, she is a bestselling romance writer as Margaret Pemberton, and under the pseudonyms Carris Carlisle; Maggie Hudson and Rebecca Dean. Having travelled extensively, her novels are set in different parts of the world. She was the fifteenth elected Chairman of the Romantic Novelists' Association (1989-1991), she has also served on the Crime Writers' Association Committee.

The story starts in 1935 with three friends, Kate, Ella and Daphne all having graduated. from Oxford. Kate wants to work on an archaeological dig and ends up securing a spot on a dig in Crete. Lewis Sinclair is the director of the dig. Kate has mixed feelings about him while he doesn’t seem to like her
Ella’s family expect her to marry Sam who’s is studying to be a doctor. But Ella feels the pull of working on a dig overseas. What will happen with Sam especially after she meets the Cretan Christos. The island and the man attract her. What will that mean for her romance with Sam back in England?
Daphne is into London high society when she fall in love with diplomat Sholto Hertford.. That romance does not go as expected at times. Circumstances changeand Daphne also ends up on Crete with her fiends. The island has its magnetic effect on her too. But the threat of war looms and those who had been friends or lovers end up on the opposing side when war comes. How will war affect the Island of Crete, as well as the three friends and those they love?
The setting is a key component here, not just the actual place but the people and their customs. It is a very different scenerio to what the three women knew in England and yet it draws them in. The story also draws the reader in but sometimes it does tend to telling rather than showing. It also deals with a lot of archeological info which, depending on how interested in archeology, may determine how much you enjoy the book. Sometimes I found it all a bit much and I tended to skim a bit. Others with a passionate interest will no doubt lap it up. Also, although I enjoyed the story, I never really connected that well with the characters. I felt I was standing on the sidelines rather than involved. That’s not to say that there wasn’t a moment or two where tears threatened. Overall, a good read just not as good as I expected.

Έχοντας αρκετούς τίτλους βιβλίων, που φέρουν την υπογραφή της, στο βιογραφικό της, δεν είναι λίγοι εκείνοι που την χαρακτηρίζουν ως μία από τις κορυφαίες, σύγχρονες λογοτέχνιδες, στον χώρο του ιστορικού μυθιστορήματος, αφού η πλειοψηφία των έργων της αφορούν ιστορίες που διαδραματίζονται σε κάποια σημαντική ιστορική περίοδο, η οποία δεν αποτελεί απλά φόντο των γεγονότων που η ίδια αφηγείται, αλλά ζωτικής σημασίας στοιχείο για την εξέλιξη δράση της, που σε μεγάλο βαθμό επηρεάζεται από τα συμβάντα των χρόνων εκείνων, καταγεγραμμένων ιστορικά ή κοινωνικά. Ένα τέτοιο βιβλίο είναι και το "Πριν έρθουν τα σύννεφα", που πριν λίγο καιρό κυκλοφόρησε από τις εκδόσεις Κλειδάριθμος.

Τρεις φίλες εξ Αγγλίας, απόφοιτες του Πανεπιστημίου της Οξφόρδης, η Έλλα, η Κέιτ και η Δάφνη, φτάνουν στην Κρήτη και πιο συγκεκριμένα στην Κνωσσό, λίγα χρόνια πριν να ξεσπάσει ο Δεύτερος Παγκόσμιος Πόλεμος. Τα κίνητρά τους για το ταξίδι τους αυτό δεν είναι άλλα από την αγάπη τους απέναντι στην αρχαιολογία και την επιθυμία τους ν' ανακαλύψουν νέα ευρήματα. Όμως, η ζωή, δεν είναι μόνο δουλειά, και έτσι ο έρωτας έρχεται να τους χτυπήσει την πόρτα και να τους χαρίσει κι άλλες, νέες συγκινήσεις. Μέχρι που ξεσπά ο πόλεμος και η ηρεμία και η γαλήνη ανατρέπεται, με όλο το νησί να μάχεται ενάντια των Γερμανών, με τους Βρετανούς κατοίκους του να βρίσκονται στο πλευρό των Ελλήνων. Όμως ο πόλεμος είναι σκληρός και φέρνει απώλειες, ενώ δεν θ' αργήσει η ώρα που διλήμματα και συγκρούσεις θα έρθουν στην επιφάνεια, και σκληρές αποφάσεις θα πρέπει να παρθούν.

Αν κρίνουμε το βιβλίο καθαρά αντικειμενικά, δεν θα τα χαρακτηρίζαμε σε καμία των περιπτώσεων πρωτότυπο. Αντίθετα, έχουμε δει -και διαβάσει- πάμπολλα βιβλία που τοποθετούνται στη συγκεκριμένη χρονική περίοδο της σύγχρονης Ιστορίας και, αναπόφευκτα, όλα περιστρέφονται γύρω από την ίδια βάση, έχουν κοινό κεντρικό άξονα, μα και κοινά ηθικά διλήμματα και μαθήματα ζωής και ανθρωπιάς. Οπότε, σε ένα βιβλίο σαν κι αυτό, αν όχι πρωτοτυπία, καθώς είναι σχεδόν ανέφικτη, τότε τι ψάχνουμε; Η απάντηση είναι απλή. Συναίσθημα! Αυτό είναι το βασικό στοιχείο που θα πρέπει να διαθέτει για να μας κερδίσει ως αναγνώστες. Να έχει καρδιά και ψυχή, και να μιλάει αντίστοιχα στις δικές μας, και το "Πριν έρθουν τα σύννεφα" ακριβώς αυτό πετυχαίνει, συγκινώντας μας βαθιά.

Σίγουρα ένας παράγοντας που θα παίξει πολύ μεγάλο ρόλο στην ευαισθητοποίηση και στην συναισθηματική φόρτιση του Έλληνα αναγνώστη είναι, τι άλλο, το γεγονός πως η ιστορία αυτή διαδραματίζεται σε ελληνικό έδαφος. Αυτό, αυτόματα, μας οδηγεί σε μια ασυναίσθητη ταύτιση, τόσο με τον τόπο, όσο και με τους ήρωες που ζουν και παλεύουν να επιβιώσουν σ' αυτόν. Άλλος λιγότερο, άλλος περισσότερο, όλοι μας έχουμε ακούσει ιστορίες από τον πόλεμο, απ' τους παππούδες μας και όχι μόνο, γαλουχηθήκαμε με τα μικρά και μεγάλα γεγονότα της εποχής εκείνης, που μέσα στην καρδιά και στο μυαλό έχουν αποκτήσει υπόσταση, μας έχουν σημαδέψει και μας συντροφεύουν ηθικά, ακόμα κι αν δεν τα βιώσαμε εμείς οι ίδιοι. Είναι κομμάτι της Ιστορίας μας, του ποιοι είμαστε, του ποιοι θα μπορούσαμε να είμαστε και κάπου στην πορεία το ξεχάσαμε. Και το να σου γεννά τέτοιες σκέψεις ένα βιβλίο, είναι πολύ σπουδαίο.

Τελειώνοντας, αυτό που θα ήθελα ν' αναγνωρίσω στην Pemberton, είναι ο πολύ έξυπνος τρόπος με τον οποίο παντρεύει τον ρεαλισμό με την ευαισθησία. Η γλώσσα της μπορεί να είναι τρυφερή και γλυκιά, όταν, ας πούμε, μιλάει για τον έρωτα και την αγάπη, ενώ την αμέσως επόμενη στιγμή, μπροστά στην αλήθεια της ζωής που δεν είναι πάντοτε όμορφη, μπορεί να γίνει σκληρή και απότομη, να εκφράσει τη βία χωρίς ωραιοποιήσεις, να ξεμπροστιάσει την ανηθικότητα χωρίς δικαιολογίες. Και ναι, όλα αυτά, μαζί με την γλαφυρότητά της, που σαν να πηγάζει από μιαν άλλην εποχή, μας παρασέρνει και δημιουργεί μέσα στη δίνη του μυαλού μας εικόνες, πλάθει χαρακτήρες, γεννά και τροφοδοτεί συναισθήματα. Δεδομένου, λοιπόν, πως βρισκόμαστε στον ευλογημένο τούτο τόπο, και πως το καλοκαίρι δεν είναι παρά ένα βήμα μακριά, σας προτείνω να το προσθέσετε στις αγορές σας και δεν θα χάσετε.

Αισθάνομαι ότι στο συγκεκριμένο βιβλίο όλα προέκυπταν πολύ βολικά.
Ενώ είχε την προοπτική να είναι ενδιαφέρον και πράγματι, σε αρκετά κεφάλαια τόσο η γραφή όσο και τα γεγονότα καθεαυτά σε κρατούν σε εγρήγορση, οι συγκυρίες διαμορφώνονταν με βάση το τι είναι καλύτερο για τον ήρωα. Δεν υπήρχε έντονο στοιχείο αιφνιδιασμού.

Θα μου γράψεις, κοπέλα μου δεν προϊδέασε το οπισθόφυλλο ότι θα διαβάσεις αστυνομικό ούτε υποσχέθηκε μυστήριο.
Θα σου απαντήσω, σε ένα πόλεμο δεν υπάρχει η ανατροπή; Σε μία επανάσταση, δεν είναι όλα αβέβαια και ευμετάβλητα;

Από την μέση και μετά, προδιαγράφεται το τέλος του βιβλίου χωρίς αυτό να σημαίνει ότι η συγγραφέας δεν εμπλουτίζει τους ήρωες της και δεν τους ωριμάζει.

Ο Β’ παγκόσμιος πόλεμος είναι το φόντο και όχι το προσκήνιο,οι ζωές των ηρώων συνεχίζονται, δυσκολεύουν, ηρεμούν ή αναστατώνονται υπό την εμπόλεμη πραγματικότητα.

I was rather surprised by this little book. Three young women who win degrees in Classical Archaeology end up in and around the famous Knossos palace site in Crete and their lives change. The Second World War happens and their lives change again. So not your average chick lit. But did I believe it? Is that why the low star rating? Probably.

Μέσα από τις ζωές τους μεταφερόμαστε στην Κρήτη και συγκεκριμένα στην Κνωσσό πριν αλλά και κατά την διάρκεια του Β' Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου.Βιώνουμε την χαρά τους μέσα από τα ευρήματα των αρχαιολογικών ανασκαφών, γνωρίζουμε καλύτερα τις ίδιες μέσα από τις σκέψεις τους και τις επιθυμίες τους καθώς και τα πρόσωπα που υπάρχουν ήδη στη ζωή τους. Βλέπουμε τα πρώτα χτυποκάρδια και τις καινούργιες γνωριμίες που αλλάζουν τις μέχρι τώρα τακτοποιημένες ζωές τους. Χρήστος Σόλτο Λιούις- Άδωνης Νικολέτα Σαμ Χέλμουτ Κιτ και Νικ είναι οι υπόλοιποι κεντρικοί ήρωες που βιβλίου.Ο καθένας έχει δική του ιστορία.Ανομολόγητα πάθη , έρωτες που ανθίζουν και ευδοκιμούν αλλά και έρωτες που χάνονται με την πάροδο του χρόνου...Έρχεται ο πόλεμος, η αγωνία η απώλεια και η απογοήτευση βρίσκεται ένα βήμα μπροστά τους.Σχέσεις που δοκιμάζονται και φτάνουν στα όρια τους, σχέσεις που αλλάζουν μορφή..Τίποτε πλέον δεν παραμένει ίδιο.Ένα κοινωνικό ανάγνωσμα που συνδυάζει με θαυμάσιο τρόπο τα ιστορικά γεγονότα με τα φανταστικά!΄3,5 Αστεράκια από μένα!

3.5 stars. Not my normal reading, but I read it as part of the Reading Women challenge and I did enjoy it, despite being annoyed by the usual tropes of romance (why oh why do women enjoy being kissed forcefully against their will in romance books??) I loved the setting of Knossos and the war scenes were well done I thought. Even though the characters were a bit unrealistic and it all tied up too nicely at the end, I cared about the characters, and that's the real clincher for me.

I wasn't sure I would finish this when I started after a slow beginning but it picked up. There were a lot of characters to remember & it was confusing in the first few chapters.
I do like books set during WW2 but I prefer them more about the home front than set in a German - occupied country.
Not a bad story though.

Beneath the Cypress Tree is a story of three young British women desiring adventure and to make a name for themselves in the world of Archeology. I love the concept behind this book but it has too many flaws for me to give it better than a 2 star out of 5. For the first half we really don't get to the heart of each of the three main heroines (Ella, Kate and Daphne) and most of what the reader does learn is second hand information. Kate writes letters to Daphne discussing Ella's budding relationship with a Greek national and Ella writes letters to Daphne giving hints at Kate's secret interest in the Archeological dig director Lewis. I love the information about the archeological digs but as a reader I am still not sure what was the central conflict; is the basis of the novel supposed to be the characters' romances, the archeological digs or something else?

From my opinion this novel should be two separate stories; it is long enough to be cut down on pages but also there is a division in the plot between what happens before and after the war. Just when it feels like the conflicts should be coming to some sort of resolution and end, instead the story takes a huge 360 degree turn and focuses on the war and politics etc. I do not understand how the war fits in with the first half of the novel at all. The second half of the book also gets confusing really quickly. There are so many things going on it is a hard to keep track of where people are and who they are with. I still do not really understand how most of the characters manage to survive through the German attack on Crete and find each other again. Neither are some of the coincidences very believable. Ella's ex-fiance, Sam, really doesn't need to come to Crete and somehow see Kate and he doesn't add anything more to the story.

All in all, I wanted to like this book but I lost interest half way through when I was expecting some sort of conclusion.

Set mainly on the island of Crete before and during world war II. There are parts of the story that just did not ring right with me. The storyline was just a little hard to believe for me too. It had the potential to be a really good read, but in parts I lost interest and kept expecting more. The characters got out of sticky situations a little too easily and of all the places the Nazi's and Allie's were located during the war it seems just too hard to believe that they were all sent to Crete. It took me a lot longer to get through this as it just did not hold my attention.

Very lengthy but also very interesting. This book takes us on a journey through Crete during the time of World War 2 In it we visit the tiny and unknown Cretan villages and we hear about the bravery and courage of the Cretan people. All this is set among the background of archaeology with the discovery of an ancient Minoan palace and other important digs. Worth a read for historical significance.
