Landry Q. Walker is a New York Times bestselling author of comics and books. His work includes Star Wars stories, Batman and Supergirl comics, and the Project Terra series of novels. He also co-created a Saturday morning cartoon called Scary Larry. He likes castles and robots and also pop-tarts. Most days he sits in his office and pushes buttons on a keyboard until stories somehow happen.
I really enjoyed this and have no problem recommending it for different ages. I would have liked to see more about Wonder Woman #600 and the authors and artists that came together for it (Alex Garner's gorgeous artwork is on page 15), but otherwise, I really loved this.
This book is a guide about Wonder Woman and her life. You get to learn about her friends and enemy's. The great journey of her life and all the incarnations and worlds in the multiverse. You learn about the Amazon way and world.
I like this book because it's art style is detailed but not at the same time. It gives you detailed information about her, her friends and enemy's, and her life. Every page tells something different with new characters and stories beyond belief.
First things first, the ✨art✨ in this collection is absolutely stunning. Landry Q. Walker curated the most amazing 🤌 illustrations from the comics. Tbh, I don’t think you can find a better Wonder Woman guide out there. Extremely in depth, this one incorporates the timeline of the character since it was created until the most recent comic releases.
The guide also explores her relationships with other superheroes, allies and nemesis. The Superman/Wonder Woman deep dive was delightful and I fell in love with a couple of villains that definitely give that I'm evil but you deserve it energy.
I never read much of the early DC stuff, so I was kind of horrified at the main plots on the comics from the 40’s to the mid 60’s 👀 featuring very superhero like plot lines like… "being kissed without consent" or "the horror of not knowing how to be a proper wife who knows how to cook for her husband" or "the fear of alien men not worshiping her instantly". I felt the urge to run towards my shelves and hug my favorite feminist books. I can not thank the universe enough for being born when and where I was. 🙌
Thankfully the 80’s where a much kinder time for our girl Diana and they served some of the best character development plotlines, since then, making her more relatable to women and slowly abandoning the need to cater to mostly a man audience…. Also the outfits get much more intricate and cool …oh my gosh 🥰
Lessons learned:
- To be honest, apart from appreciating the art and the fact that I do not live in the 40’s this was more of a research/ informative based book with a lot of nerdy info about my fav superhero. So I was just fangirling all the time! Not really reflected too much on it 🤪
notes
Gal Gadot did to Wonder Woman what Florence Pugh did to Amy March and I’m here for it! 🙌
I've had this book for several years but had not done much more than flip through it. However, after watching Wonder Woman 84, I had some questions about a few things. So, I grabbed this one off the shelf as a reference. After answering the question I had, I decided to read the book from front to back. And I'm so glad that I did.
I got into reading comics with the launch of the "New 52" and only had a cursory knowledge of the years of history that formed my favorite iconic characters, including Wonder Woman. This guide provides a brief overview of the Amazon Warrior since her creation in 1941.
The structure of the book highlights the key comic periods over time and provides key themes, allies, villains, and storylines throughout the long history of Wonder Woman. I have a much better understanding of the conflicting background and key comics that define the character. And now I have starting points to go back and read some of the key storylines over time.
Also, I really want to explore some of the other verions of WOnder Woman across the Multiverse now (who wouldn't want to read about Earth-34 and the fight against Jack the Ripper?). I highly recommed this as a primer and introduction to understand the storied history of the iconic character of Wonder Woman.
I did only give four stars because I would have liked to have the artists credited on each page and not as a combined group at the end of the book and the artists, writers, and letterers of the key comics listed for key comics. The work of those people are the reason the character has beceom so iconic and they should be recognized for their contributions.
This book provides a great summary of Wonder Woman's major moments since her first appearance in the 1940s. It covers enemies (the originals and the remakes), the complex timelines, and the evolution of the Amazon herself. It includes a lot of great art, so you can also see how Diana has evolved over 70 years. There's just enough detail to help you understand the most important storylines, but art takes up more page space than text, so you still get the "comic" vibe.
An informative exploration of the character of Wonder Woman in her various iterations, her varying origin stories, supporting characters, villains and adventures. It’s interesting to see how she, and the narrative and artistic styles, have evolved over 75 years but, oddly, the descriptions of how DC’s big reset moments such as Crisis and Flashpoint have affected her have put me off reading much of her stories, which I’m certain was not the book’s intention.
Organized clearly. Fantastic compendium of key arcs, characters, and storylines within the multiverse. The key to the various eras and cosmic shifts provides a crucial overview. It would be nice if a future edition could include a feature on "Key authors," for example, to focus on such writers as Greg Rucka and Allan Heinberg.
Illustrations are splendid. Highly recommended for the Wonder Woman fanatic as well as more casual fans.
These DK books are designed to be attention grabbing, quick introductions to characters and their histories, and this volume does an excellent job of that. Wonder Woman is one of the oldest characters still being published, and there is a lot of history to cover. Her history, with key characters and themes, are covered nicely if a little superficially at times, and the oversized art throughout is gorgeous to look at.
Always recommend DK books, and this is no exception.
Overall, a very good guide book for Wonder Woman, especially for beginners. Not only provide a concise and informative about the Themiscyra princess and associated characters, timelines, main storylines and other important informations, but, the artworks present in this book are superb and stunning! A book I recommended people to read before starting to delve deeper on the character by reading dedicated comics which feature her as main protagonist or character.
A recent purchase that I got on the basis of "research" purposes for my essay. But really I just love this beautifully laid-out, illustrated guide to Wonder Woman's history, which does an excellent job of condensing several decades of what is often convoluted and bizarre comic book history into a few hundred pages.
This was a Christmas gift from my friend Meredith, and I am glad I read it. It was so fascinating to read about the different parts of Diana’s life, I liked the character profiles of some of the supporting players of each era, I even think DC should try to revive some of them. This is a really good read if you want to know everything you can about Wonder Woman.
Seems to have a lot of information about WW and her universe. Glad to see that a woman becomes president of the U.S. at least by 1000 years into the future, that she does not rely on a man for anything and that men don't mind sharing household chores in the golden age of humanity.
This book is a really good overview of wonder woman for one who doesn't reads comics. I was just curious about her character and how she's a figure of female empowerment. I only rated this 3 stars because I'm not a comic reader and into some of the sci-fi aspects of which the novel is comprised.
It's wonderful to have these quick guides to the oft murky history of DC's finest heroes. Everything is laid out simply and straightforward for those of us who have yet to scratch the surface on Wonder Woman's 75 years of stories.
Finally finished the last few pages in this today. I was never a wonder woman fan but I did fall in love with Etta Candy. That woman should get her own film?
I used DK books a lot while homeschooling my kids and I always found their books visually stunning as well as a great source to discover quick facts about a topic. Being a visual learner I do a great deal of reading books versus listening to audiobooks, and since I am such a visual learner I think that is why I am drawn to DK books. So, naturally my favorite part of this DK Wonder Woman guide is the timeline presented in the opening pages. The entire book mirrors the timeline and this DK version of Wonder Woman has more of a chronological history in the way it presents Wonder Woman’s allies and enemies.
I would still recommend this book for advanced middle-grade readers, and I would probably recommend Walker’s DK Wonder Woman guide over Beatty’s only because this one is recently updated and filled with greater detail.
versions of Wonder Woman. It has lots of pictures so you can see who are the major villains in which timeline. I’m used to reboots of series and the such, but it seems that for the DC universe this can get really confusing and you need a guide like this just to help you keep track. This is one guide that I will be holding onto as I read more DC to help me stay on track.
