While investigating an apparent spoofing incident at a classified monitoring site in North Africa, a crack security team discovers an alien sentinel stationed in the outer Solar System. Deciphering communications protocols and establishing contact with the ancient sentinel pits the team against powerful military and political factions who learn of their finding and demand control.
But the team discovers the sentinel has a deadly mission when two of them share a strange thought augmentation experiment with the sentinel’s ageless, synthetic pilot. The sentinel destroys its pilot and with its enormous capabilities counters every move to stop it.
Left without the sympathetic pilot’s covert guidance and having to fend off interference by government factions, the remaining team must find a way to defeat the advanced technology arrayed against them even as the sentinel alters Earth’s biosphere and its organisms in horrific ways for a purpose no one could have anticipated.
I really enjoyed the science in this sci fi thriller yet some scenes seemed out of sync. Let's just say if a yeti came to your campsite and calmly volunteered to tell you all about their history, would you say let's talk about in the morning? Even with a hot date waiting in the tent I think most would suffer through a good summarization. Loved the exploration of time and space. We'll thought out there. I'll read more from Jerry, I'm sure.
The master of mid 50s Florida intrigue turns out to be s master of science at a formidable level.the more he write the more I will read hi work again and again.
This book took me to Grand new depths and made me think about things that I had never contemplated in all of my life. What is the true danger of an alien Society? Are we are we the danger of is vicarious existence simply no longer enough?
Sometimes an author has so much talent he can be convinced to dig up everything he's ever started for publication. Sometimes that's a great idea, sometimes it's not. Read "A measure of the earth "and "A gift of time " to appreciate how this could happen. Read "Pulse" to see why it shouldn't. Jerry Merritt will remain one of my favorite writers.
I think if there was a four and a half rating I would have given the book that. Just a few imperfections in an otherwise great book. The ending will blow you away.
