I am glad to see that Marvel has finally see it fit to spare Peter David and X-Factor some spare marketing dollars in relaunching the title as All New X-Factor with a brand new trade dress, a bonus digital code and a higher price point. For years, David has been doing exceptional work on X-Factor. This relaunch is his third take on it and an unbroken run since he reinvented Jamie Madrox as a gumshoe with the Madrox limited series which prompted an ongoing. He also did X-Factor in the nineties, which are some of my favorite comics until now, especially the ones he did with Joe Quesada. So that a government sanctioned taskforce, a grassroots detective agency, and now a corporate-backed siperteam.

I am excited for this relaunch since I hope a bonus digital code and a new number one will bring in the numbers which the last ongoing sorely lacked.

David introduces the first three members of his team, two of them are carryovers from his previous volume: team leader Polaris and her half-brother Quicksilver. I am glad David managed to snag Gambit. Ever since his solo title ended, his status has been murky, even in the X-books. I hope David would find a use for the character that would allow Gambit to be relevant again.

David does a nice job setting up the new team, though at least three more members remain under the wraps. I like the art, hopefully this would be Carmine Di Giandomenico's breakout title that would elevate him among the elite artist in Marvel's stable of talent.

This is a promising first issue and I definitely would like to see more. David has earned my trust and I hope he can manage another lengthy run despite the health scare he had just last year.

How did I not know that Peter David wrote a series of X-Factor featuring Gambit!?! He loves cats and it's great. The writing is smooth and I enjoy David's love of using discarded characters as real ones, and accomplishing it very well. I'm exciting to get more attached to these characters, and David's writing is actually FUNNY too, which is always nice.

“Bit of a rough but promising start.” ~Shadowhawk, The Founding Fields

I’ve never read an X-Factor team title before, so All-New X-Factor #1 is pretty much my first introduction to the whole thing. Launched as part of the All-New Marvel NOW! initiative, this book presents a very different X-Men team make-up, with the only recognisable character for me being Gambit, a favourite of mine since the days of the Fox X-Men cartoon, alongside others that I am not familiar with at all, such as Quicksilver and Polaris. Having sampled almost all the current X-books, I have to say that overall, this book is definitely the most… unique one, since it presents the X-Factor team as a corporate ace in the hole for Serval Industries, which only wants to help people (the company that is).

Gambit is pretty much the star of this comic and he shines throughout. Sometimes Peter David gives him too much dialogue and the character then fumbles, but catches on pretty quickly to the change in status. The first half of the comic, or the opening pages rather, are just chock-full of dialogue and they just take away from the larger script itself. Still, David does a good job with him and its nice to see Gambit getting some prominence given the failure of his solo title to be able to sustain itself for a decently lengthy run.

Characters like Polaris and Quicksilver kind of suffer however since there isn’t much room devoted to them developing their powers or even learning to work together as a team for the benefit of everyone else. The issue is quite predictable in how it brings the team together and while I liked that Gambit was kind of the main man for the team, and was essentially our point man, things didn’t quite click together for me. I wanted to see more of Polaris and Quicksilver but don’t really see anything of their backhistory or anything, other than the fact that Quicksilver is Polaris’ half-brother and that he was, until recently, an Avenger. That’s really it.

Its disappointing.

On the art side, Carmine Di Giandomenico serves as the penciller while Lee Loughridge handles the colours and VC’s Cory Petit handles the letters. The art was serviceable at best. Nothing exceptional, nothing dreary. It was decent. Gambit is drawn fairly evil, especially with his eyes and all, but largely I am not impressed with the title as I expected to be. Black Widow #1 was quite an amazing issue in that regard, thanks largely due to Phil Noto’s excellent work. All-New X-Factor #1 is just not in that same league anymore, and I doubt it will be, even for the next couple issues.

I’ll stick around for an issue more or maybe two, but right now, I don’t see myself continuing on with the series in the long-term.

This is by no means the best comic I've ever read, nor was I expecting it to be, but what it was was a fun comic book with great characters, nice art and enjoyable interactions between the characters, which more than made up for the slightly over-used and predictable storylines me. This was exactly what I was hoping for in this book, so if you want an easy, enjoyable read, this is a good book for it. If you want an original comic book masterpiece, go read Sandman or something.

Peter David perfectly maintains the characters' personalities established by previous writers, all while adding in the wit and sass old fans have grown to love (in previous X-Factor incarnations) onto this new ensemble.

review of issues 1-9.
They were slightly better than ok. maybe a 2.5 rating but I rounded up.
I liked Gambit and Danger (because she reminds me of Seven of Nine) best.

Probably won't by issues of this series and just read it on Marvel Unlimited.
