I had been waiting to read these books. I loved the Trylle series. It’s been a minute since I’ve read a book by Hocking, but I usually love everything she writes. I was a little disappointed by this series. I had to force myself to finish these books. In the first book there wasn’t much passion in the writing, it felt bored. The series did get better and I feel like book 3 was the best. The main character lacked compassion. I don’t understand how a character can go through so much and not be traumatized by the the slightest. The deaths did seem forced...and some unnecessary, not naming any names. Not sure how I feel about how it ended as a whole. I’m still digesting.

DNF @ page 803.

This would have been 3 stars but by page 600 I started to lose interest, so I skim read the next 200 pages before I gave up. I really didn't care to keep going with the last book in this. Books 1 and 2 were 3 stars but by book 3 I was done. Definitely not as good as the Tryell Series. This was just a bit too boring for me.

I liked the main character in the series and the mystery. I was expecting a lot more I guess but I wasn't wowed and it wasn't the kind of Trolls I was thinking that this would be about. I was expecting magic and more fantasy but this series didn't have any.

It's not the worst series I have ever read but it wasn't good either.

Frostfire - 2 stars

Ice Kissed - 3 stars

Crystal Kingdom - 2.5 stars

I definitely enjoyed these books. I though the relationships were well developed and despite the similar setting to the Trylle books the romance, plot lines, character development, and various other factors were different. My only "complaint" is that I thought the deaths were a little.... forced? the first main one I saw coming and could see how it could help development but the second I thought was just a little rushed and could have gotten off with a "seriously injured" and gotten the same emotional effect.
Other than that I really really liked it and will definitely continue with Hocking's books!

Tbh this is one of the worst books I've ever read for leisure. My sister and I are reading it ironically, trying to see if we can finish it. The only part that's well done is the world building. I'm hoping the antagonist is part of a pretty stunning master plan because so far the whole "you killed my father" "yeah but I didn't want to" thing isn't enough to get me intrigued. It is very slow paced and the author is counting on you continuing for the mystery which isn't as driving as the cringe romance plot.

My feelings:

After falling in love with the first Trylle series I have since chased down the rest of the books about it.
I read one lot and didn't enjoy it as much as the first one.
But thought I would still give another one ago.
and im so glad that i did. I do feel like Hocking as started to write the first 2 books in every series to be more world creating, and information dumps, then actual action and passion. Book 3 seems to deliver what we are looking for. So it's a matter of holding on tight till you get to the end.

3 stars for the story setting. 2 for implementation of the idea into story-form. 1.5 star for the writing style and the care that went into writing.

The Kanin trilogy follows Bryn Aven a mixed-race troll (not the ugly, stocky trolls, but the one's that look humanoid and are very beautiful). Her dream is to become part of the Kanin kingdoms most prestigious, most famous king's guards - the Högdragen.
Obviously, there needs to be an adversary, which in this story is Konstantin Black - a former Högdragen and a fallen hero of the Kanin people - who committed treason and seems now to be part of an intrigue in the whole of the troll society.

The setting is quite basic: there is an outsider girl who is reaching for her dreams, but is blocked at every turn because she is not of the pure Kanin race. There is an adversary who seems to try to overthrow the troll society. However, there seems more to his actions (Wow. The mystery.).
Only Bryn Aven (the outsider girl) realises that there is more to Konstantin's actions (Oh, wonder. Colour me surprised).
Since, it is a YA book, there obviously needs to be a love interest, who is perfect for her. However, Bryn obviously cannot date him, because of reasons.

Now, concerning the writing: I have to admit, the books are terribly easy to read - which is positive. The sentence structures are simple. You can easily sit down, start reading and an hour later you have half of the first book finished.
However, the way it was written and the thougths that went into the writing were a bit lacking. Following are a few points that just annoyed me while reading:

(1) The author does a lot of info-dumping (like a lot). One of the characters (Linus Berling, a changeling child) seemed to get more parts in the story just so that the author could explain the troll society to the reader.

(2) There were a lot of details in the story that I recon were for the world-building. However, they were just really irrelevant to the story (sorry, I really do not need to know how Bryn's boss decorates his office space - even if it is decorated in the stereotypical troll style). All the details were disrupting the flow of the story.

(3) There were a lot of repetitions (Thank you for the reminders, Amanda Hocking, but I understood it the first time round that the trolls have Swedish ancestry. There really is no need to repeat it every few chapters).

(4) Since there was a mystery to be solved in the stories, there had to be a bit of detective work that had to be done. After reading the few deductions made, I have to say that none of them would have made good detectives. For example, in one part, they were deducing a few options why a certain person disappeared and they only found three reasons for the disappearance. I could think of at least two more off the top of my head.
You just get the feeling that there wasn't too much thought put into the scene.

(5) When the author wanted to talk about controversial themes, she introduces a new character who will have a pointless discussion with the protagonist. The first time her mother is introduced, Bryn has a discussion with her mother about ancient traditions that have a bit of an ethical controversy attached to it. The first time Bryn talks to her friend's brother, they have a discussion about enabling elitism.
The themes in itself are relevant, however, she could have addressed them more subtly.

There were even more issues with the storyline and planning like inconsistencies in the story and inconsistencies in what the characters said compared to what happened around them. Concerning the characters they were very shallowly described and there were inconsistencies with their development.

In conclusion, the story was simple and easy to read. However, the style was really lacking.

I feel like this story didn't flow as smoothly as the Trylle trilogy. It took me longer to read because of that.

However, just as in the Trylle trilogy, there are some inconsistencies in the story and world building. For example, at some points if someone turns invisible, you still see blood if it's smeared on them, and at other points in time you don't.

Apart from that, it was a smooth read. And there were some nice quotes:

She cocked her head, appraising me. "You've got balls so big, they'd make an orge jealous. Whatever you want, I'm game."

Or

"I would stab you through the heart, but I don't think you have one," I said, and then I slid the dagger across her throat.

The Kanin Chronicles is a Fantasy trilogy for young adults written by Amanda Hocking. The three books, Frostfire, Ice kissed and Crystal Kingdom, take place in the same universe as her best-seller Trylle, but some aspects of The Kanin Chronicles are a bit weird.

The Kanin Chronicles tells the story of Bryn, a tracker who has never fit in the Kanin society. Her dream is to become a member of the elite guard but her feelings for her boss, Ridley, complicate things.
One day, there is an attack on the kingdom and throughout the three books, Bryn discovers a conspiracy and her world crumbles.
The characters are gorgeous and well-built trolls — yes, trolls — with incredible powers and as beautiful as the vampires from Twilight. Readers might think that Amanda Hocking could be Stephanie Meyer’s long lost cousin. Both authors write about beautiful supernatural creatures with powers that live hidden from humans, but in The Kanin Chronicles there are only trolls.
Another weird detail is the base of this world. Trolls switch their babies with humans’ babies but only with rich families.
When a troll becomes an adult, trackers find them and they return them to their homes with the money.
Some confusing details.
Typical topics are extremely common in that type of the novels, predictable and characters are usually dull. On the other hand, there is not a love triangle and that is a relief.
The trilogy promises a lot but gives us nothing.

The trilogy is promising at the beginning, but there are confusing details that make the some parts of the story difficult to follow for the reader. I was happy there wasn’t the typical love triangle that we usually find in these stories. Unfortunately, the characters and the story lines are a bit dull and predictable and not any different than you might find in these kinds of novels.

Love this book (books) This was a happy find at the dollar tree store. It is well written all the way around. It was like you could see the books coming to life as you read them. The three characters, Byrn,Ridley,Konstantine, they kept the story going, there so many other characters that their story flowed and mixed in with the story. It was a page turning book for me, I slowed down on the last book I did not want it to end. As per the book, discover the epic tale of a magical realm as beautiful as it is treacherous… enter the secret kingdom of the Kanin……
You won’t want to put it down…

I really enjoyed this series and have read it a few times now because I enjoyed it so much. I found Bryn to be a very likeable, strong heroine (although some of her choices in her love life frustrated me! But no one's perfect) and I like that the story is written in first person so that we can understand her better. The characters were all individually very well-portrayed, and the story was gripping all the way through. Love it!

It was a long read, a trilogy that consists of 3 books: Frostfire, Ice Kissed and Crystal Kingdom.

Book 1 & 2 was a slow read for me. Maybe because I always feel tired after work and spend more time outside during the weekends. Hence, the slow read.

Book 3 was a fast read for me. A lot of things happened in this book. The last few pages left me heartbroken, I didn't see those coming. Let me have a few days before I pick up a new book to read.

A good series, despite only one 'plot twist' that I didn't actually see coming. All the deaths were, however, extremely predictable, and that lessened the emotional effect they otherwise would have had on me

Different then most books I've read, this is really thought out and put together. I think that in some indirect way, it touches on some real-life social issues. This book was kind of a last minute buy, and I'm really glad I got I decided to buy it.

I would recommend this over Trylle trilogy any day. ( And I actually liked Trylle a lot)

This trilogy has one of the wittiest- funny female protagonist that anyone can wish for.

Made for binge reading.

This trilogy took me over a month to get through. A pretty cool premise, but one that could have been condensed into a very solid, 600 or so page book. The entire second book felt pointless, only adding a lot more characters and very little plot development.

Loved this, super clear characters, no spice at all (if so minimal), love the universe as a whole, didn’t like how the characters from the Trylle were portrayed as it didn’t match their personality as much as I imagined and I wish the protagonist got with someone else but overall such a good read

I really liked it however I prefer the first trilogy, this one seemed a little slow at points and the last book was so full of action to wrap things up.
A good book but not the best
