Why? So many damn questions unanswered! My biggest pet peeve throughout this series has been the age of the three human siblings. Why not make them a bit older and living out from under mom and dad? The relationship between them makes absolutely no sense. Or why bother with the high school setup? It was another absolute throw away nonsensical element. And for dragons that have lived 500+ years and one that was trained from birth for the possibility of claiming the throne, they make absolutely idiotic decisions. Also, why bother with the "gift" giving if they are not utilized for the majority of the story. The worst offense for me was killing off the best character of the series. You don't get to see any of the resolution or see their relationships really progress. But it was successful in getting me to read the series in its entirety.

So I will start with what I liked. The story and plot of the overall series was great. The ending was brilliant. Really, this is what is keeping this book rated so high.

Now the disappointments. Why was there no scene with the underground dragons? Their princess died saving pretty much all of dragon kind and there was no scene to honor her for her race. And speaking of the princess. What happened to the “knight” killing the princess as was said in the prophecy? Or maybe I missed something. I don’t know. But something just doesn’t add up.

I also believe that there could have been much more detail but some major events just seemed to just be glazed over. It was a disappointment.

Where do i even begin... This series was so hard to read. I only finished it because I was in a book slump and they were free on kindle unlimited.
The story line was there but so poorly executed. This could have been a great series if they knew how to accurately portray these characters and make it seem realistic. Or i don’t know, build a story. I am not even talking about the dragons, I’m talking about the humans. But it was all bad.
The immaturity of every single one of them. They have all of this “leadership” and not one of them acts like it. Sid and Skye are over 500 yo but act like they’re 16. Aspen, i can’t even begin with her. Paul having any sort of leadership or voice in the army at 19 was such a joke. And he proposed to Hazel but they went back to be being chummy? I can’t even handle the whole president thing. I just shake my head at it.
The dragon Kings and queens had all these gifts but no one ever used them. No one seemed to care that entire races of dragons were wiped out.
They were literally 18 and 19 years old in high school. Eye roll. The high school scene was so stupid. I don’t know why they introduce secondary characters such as Tori and Ella and then never follow up. So many open ended story lines.
I did liked that no character was safe from death but the main character responses were so inappropriate at times. Like when everyone was dying they just go back to living their lives. Always in the theatre room just hanging out.
Then when all the fire dragons died no one even batted an eye at Val’s cousin??? Why even introduce her and her mate then! And they don’t even bring it up. It was just a casual mention she dies. The end. Like wtf? And Val is off the hook like no big deal buddy, everyone makes mistakes.
And I hate everyone because Runa died. Like screw you for that. And how the hell was it the knights fault for killing the princess??? This whole book made absolutely no sense. And surprise surprise there was no follow up on it.
But my biggest pet peeve is a shitty ending. And that was a shit ending. Literally nothing got answered or wrapped up. The follow up of the main characters was crap. This story line is literally a month long over the 5 books. And they don’t offer a sufficient epilogue to this. I read all 5 of these poorly written books to have it end like that. I honestly don’t understand how these books have any followers let a lone any star ratings over 2.
I could go on and on about this but I’ll stop myself. There was a lot of potential lost in this entire series by horrible plot lines and character developments. I’m kind of angry about it. As one smart girl one said, “I literally can’t even.”

The story was an ok one, but the writing felt a bit juvenile. I know it is a YA series, but I think I'd recommend it to my 10 year old before my teens. It helped clear my head from other exceptional books that are hard to move on from, but there were so many errors it made it difficult. The author doesn't seem to understand the use of italics to designate speech that is telepathic. She kept using the italics even when describing the speaker, not just when they spoke. Very confusing. Better editing is definitely needed.

Ii tried to like the characters. They had definite promise. But the dragons in human form, even though they were supposedly well over 200 years old, acted like children. I didn't understand that. I would have expected more maturity from them even though it was their first time as humans. Being in human form shouldn't have meant having the maturity of the human age you take. Made it difficult to enjoy the characters personalities. I found it too frustrating. I kept finding myself angry that they were acting like such children when they apparently were leaders and needed to act older, more in control.

The storyline was ok. A bit trite. Even when the author tried to throw in twists, they were predictable. But, with all that being said, I did read all 5 because they are fast reading and I guess had the same usual. hook where I did want to know how she ended it. But the ending was very lame. Very boring. She breezed through it so fast it was like it was all she could do to get it over with so she could move on.

I guess I would recommend it to YA readers only if you don't mind reading books with many many errors. If you like dragon stories where they are the good guys and they interact with people, this series is ok. Not great, not horrible.

It was nice to finally get the full prophecy out in the open once and for all. I like the addition of Freddie, but thought he should have been utilized a little more. I also thought there should have been a final scene with the the Underground dragons. The ending and epilogue felt to rushed though the book did answer some questions, but it also made some more. Some of the things were to easy and things should have been more explained. The ending for the series was my least favorite of all of the books. Having said that this was still an excellent series and I still recommend it. I volunteered to read this book.

Wow, what a ride...
This is the last book of the series and it was an interesting story. Even though I still think there’s a lot of unanswered questions, I enjoyed reading it. The end kind of made me feel like there’s more to come later but I don’t know. (Be aware of spoilers below)
I just feel like it’s not over, it shouldn’t be because there’s a lot more to explain, especially why Skye and Val can change anymore, how will that work out? Was that the prophecy or the witch’s spell?
Also, who killed Sid’s dad? Theo never admitted, just said he had to, I’m thinking it was Candide, but still, I hate just assuming.
And the prophecy said the knight would be the princess’s death but it wasn’t like that. Or maybe it was Rowan’s decision to lock Runa before the war that made her forget her promise to stay home and go fight?
Would the dragons rise up again from different races?
How and why Everett died? Did they got the magic books from his cave?
What about Damien? Did he survive? They didn’t mention him again in this book.
What about that letter that Everett left Skye? Why did it have Rowan’s name if it was meant for Skye only?

I don’t know, just feel like there’s a lot of things left unanswered and there was still a lot of story to tell. But, I enjoyed reading it. Good dragon book series.

This book has taken forever to finish, it was so bad.

I understand that every book/movie/tv show expects some suspension of disbelief, however, this book took that to an extreme, there were just so many questions that never got answered. Some are minor, but other ones are right in your face.

A. If there were thousands of dragons, how did they not overhunt all the game in the entire USA and thereby hunt themselves into extinction?

B. How big is Sid's yard if it can fit thousands of dragons and the other animals while just idly waiting for the army?

C. Is it really a kingdom if they have no land, wouldn't they just be squatters?

D. Why was the rest of the world doing nothing during these attacks?

E. Why has nothing in the world changed to reflect the existence of dragons?

F. Why was no one held responsible for the things that the dragons did?

G. If the government knew that the dragons could be people, why not tell the general population so they could be prepared and defend themselves properly? We read what Theo did as a dragon, but what if he was also a serial killer as a human? This doesn't seem like something that would have been kept under wraps since humanity entered the scene.

H. How are the young/youngish people in positions of so much power? Paul for example? Wouldn't that position be held by someone with age and experience?

I. Why bother with the prophecy when it did nothing at all to help and nothing was ever clarified?

J. How can all the characters be such an emotional and personality suck hole? See lower notes.

K. If dragons are as easy to kill as they are in the book how are any left alive? Rowan, Hazel, and Aspen each took one out with a sword in a matter of seconds.

L. Why call the Dragons supernatural creatures? If they are in existence in that world then they are natural, not supernatural, that would be like calling the horse a supernatural creature.

M. Was Darnel's treason ever addressed?

N. How could they still consider themselves the good guys when they were attacking bases and fighter jets? Pre-emptive self-defence is an attack.

O. Once the dragons started attacking why were the dragon-killing gun designs not sent to everyone so that the world could protect itself?

P. How big were the dragons? their size seemed to change as need be.

Mostly A though. That bothered me through the entire series.

By the end of the series, all the characters were interchangeable, not a single one has any individual characteristics, thoughts, or personality at all.

Rowan is no longer afraid of dragons, nor does he have any personality traits, even his glasses and asthma are wiped away and he is uber-powerful and a kick-ass sword fighter.

Hazel has no fear of flying and instead of hating dragons she is all gung-ho team dragons and she is uber-powerful and a kick-ass sword fighter.

Aspen has never changed and is just as flat a character as ever and is uber-powerful and a kick-ass sword fighter.

The dragon kings could be one and the same and Runa was just switched out for Freddy.

Need a character to do something in this chapter? Just dip your hand into a hat because they are all exactly the same.

The Fight with the white witch was too anti-climatic, it lasted what, 2 pages? It was almost pointless to include. Also her lover the other artic dragon was so powerful and she would have turned away her evil side to save him because she loved him and he was her one. Then he was dead, two tears of grief and she was again all about getting into Sid's pants. That was super aggravating that the author thought that is how emotions and love work.

The president was actually the bigger fight, and she was cowed into giving everyone what they wanted with no issue. In reality, if all the dragons and animals were gathered together in one place the government would have killed them all and sought to import animals from other areas of the United States or even from around the world. If the park was liveable again. Human history is full of examples of atrocious acts of cruelty.

I could probably go on a lot longer about how bad this series is but it took me over two years to finish it and I think that speaks for itself.

The Kings by Kimberly Loth is book 5 in her Dragon Kings series. In this book is the engaging conclusion to the series of where the three kings must either defeat the white witch dragon who threatens them all and humanity as well or die trying. They are faced with the task of figuring out the prophecy and discovering who will play what role in the coming days. But when the humans decide that the dragons are too much of a threat they must now fight a war on two sides because of what the arctic and canyon dragons have done in attacking cities and decimating them down to ash in a matter of hours with their dragon flames. Val, Sid and Skye must fight together or they will all fall and fail and all of the dragons with them. War is an ugly thing and innocent lives are always lost but they must remain strong if they are going to make it through.
This book picks right up where book four leaves off with Skye and Rowan returning to try and decipher the riddle of the prophesy. Though dead Everett does his best to aid them in deciphering the riddle but even he can only tell them so much before magic precludes him from not saying any more. They all struggle to come to terms with their roles in this fight but one thing is certain…only one king will remain when it is all said and done. There are many paths to the end but will they be able to come together to achieve the one that is best for them all?
This book for me was riveting and engaging. Every time that I put it down because of life calling I kept wanting to know what was going to happen next. The characters are so engaging and the situations that they find themselves in at times makes you want to either reach out and smack them or makes you want to cringe for their sakes. The war is upon them and you really wonder who will rise and who will fall in the race to save as many lives as they can. There were many times that I feared for some or most of them but thats how you know you’re reading a good story. Not everyone gets a happy ending but there are so many beautiful elements to this story and I absolutely loved it.
This is definitely a series worth reading and if you’ve made it this far and have enjoyed it as much as I have I say this…Read on. Read all the way to the end. You won’t be disappointed. I voluntarily read a free copy of this book but I will most definitely be purchasing them all so that I can reread them again and again. Two thumbs up to the author on creating such a great series. Well done.

I could not imagine a better climax for this epic series.
The fight between good and evil forces brings us many breathtaking situations with many twists, dangers, challenges and hard decisions under the pressure of circumstances. We finally get the whole prophecy and the riddle how to solve it and who will play the lead role. The threat of humanity extinction makes the fight against the white dragon even more straining since the humans also consider dragons a threat and fight against them. Epic battles and the tension if the dragons would succeed in the desperate mission or fail the world kept me on the edge the whole time, unable to put the book aside.
There were many possible paths this book could follow, but the chosen one was exciting and surprising enough to keep my senses on alert the whole time. Mystery, drama, suspense, action, and lots of emotions, this series has it all.
I simply loved the characters. They are all complex, with unique personalities, showing both their strengths and weaknesses which makes them very realistic and easy to identify with. Each of them has its own life story that makes a thread interwoven with lives of others, building the story in an original way and speeding the whole pace up.
I simply love this series and would recommend it to anyone!

The beginning of the series started off so good but I feel like the story got lost after the second book. In the third and fourth book, the storylines were more focused on other characters when I feel that this series should have been more focused on Sid and Aspen. I understand where the author was going with the third and fourth books but I don't think Hazel and Skye's stories should have been novels. They would have been better novellas than a main part in the series. Other than that I would say the overall review was that the last book was alright for the end of the series. It wasn't terrible but it wasn't as great as the first two books in the series.

I had a difficult time getting in the mood to read this. Books 1, 2 and 4 I liked because of Sid/Aspen and Rowan/Skye. I didn't care for the Val/Hazel story at all. There was nothing but sad, horrific scenes and all around just a depressing book. The only bright and funny part was when Runa was in it but the author took "care" of her at the end. Made me mad. Even tho she was the hero and saved the day I just was hoping she wouldn't have died. I skimmed through the entire book just wanting to get to the end. I was also sad the way the author killed off entire dragon species and of course, entire cities?? Oh well....it's just a book, but I was still disappointed.

The exciting conclusion to the Dragon Kings series. I loved the twist and turns and the high stakes in the story. There was no telling how everything was going to turn out. Needless to say I was satisfied with the ending and am sad to see the series end.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.

I am so sad that this series has ended! I adored this whole series and this book was no disappointment, it really is filled with so much action and thrilling events. The whole book definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat and it's unbearable to put the book down, it is a very compelling and addictive read so you can't stop reading although you don't want it to end knowing this is the last book in the series.

This storyline carries on basically where the last one ended so it really is essential that you read the previous books in this series before you pick up this one as it won't make much sense in a lot of places without the insight that the previous books give the reader. The storyline is amazing and there were so many times i actually gasped out loud at what i was reading, you really do get sucked into the world of this book, while reading ths book you really can't get anything else done because of how it draws you in making you feel part of their world and going through their fears and feelings of hope with them.

There are so many things that i want to discuss about this book but they re key things that will give away the storyline and i am not prepared to do that and believe me, you don't want me to ruin any of the surprises and shocks. I can guarantee that you will adore this book and become a surefire fan of Kimberly Loth, the quality of her writing is to such a high standard that you will be blown away and quickly addicted to her book! I would recommend her work to everyone and anyone!!!

I feel bad saying this, but this book was a joke. Things were rush, characters were introduced to be kill off and nobody cared, there is was war setting but no background was developed about it and the villain was a caricature. The six main characters are all teens and half of them are pretentious, while the 3 others felt useless. The first book of this series was an ok cliché, cheesy YA supernatural romance, but this series was just too long and could easily have end before.

We finally get to hear the full prophecy about the three Kings and it doesn’t look good. Only one of the King will survive and a mysterious princess will be sacrifice.
The artic dragons are declaring war on the royal dragons & humans People are panicking when Las Vegas & Alaska are wipe out. Oh, there is also a complete race of dragons that get instinct but nobody is freaking out about this...

Sid & Aspen go see the president (yup it easy like that) to ask help from the army. It was quite unrealistic how Aspen, a seventeen years old girl became all pretentious and boss around the president asking to be call “her majesty”.

Everyone kept talking about the white witch, but I feel her character was never develop and I have no clue why she was a villain. Maybe I wasn’t paying attention but at the end, I didn’t care.

🐲 3.5 star rating

This is the first Kimberly Loth books I’ve read/listened to, I enjoyed the storyline very much.

Each book must be read in order, even though books 3 and 4 are based around the other Kings relationships with their romantic counterpart, as the story continues from the previous book.

Each relationship has its own trials and tribulations to overcome but in the mean time they are fighting a war with dragons that wish to take over the world and burn everything in their wake.

The books are written well and are quite fast paced. The characters are relatable and easy to fall in love with. I was particular sad with the last book and kept hoping something would happen to alter the losses endured.

Now for the reason behind my rating:
- it was a little too easy to read between the lines, had these books been any longer I would have lost interest because it seemed you could pick out what was going to happen (a number of times I was like “I knew it!”
- because I listened to the audible versions I really had a dislike for the way Rowan was portrayed by the actors performance and made him sound like a five year old

Only as good as the villain

There is a lot of good potential in this book but the climax was wanting. This is probably because the villain is just...there. She has no personality, no motivation, no depth to her at all. Candide was a weak villain who never intimidated or was someone I could sympathize with. She didn't even seem like a lunatic. Just there because the plot needed it.

That could describe the whole book. I wish the author had turned the war into a trilogy so we could get a feel for the characters and the stakes. Or one of the previous books been about Candide,so we at least got to know her. Particularly with how the prophecy was framed as this earth shattering event, to get 3 books of set up for a brief, weekend blip of a war, felt like reading a fifty page introduction for a five page story. It felt like everything that happened, happened because it was foreordained and all the characters were just puppets on a string. As such, it was hard to get caught up in the action or care. The previous three books were quite good, but with stopping at four, the pacing of the series was terrible.

The fifth book in the series was different than the sequels. The sequels were about enemies-to-lovers, while The Kings was about fulfilling the prophecy.

Everything happened quickly in this book. There was a prophecy of the tyrant/leader, the betrayed/betrayer, and the coward/brave. Immediately (by the second and third chapter), Sid's personality changed and he became the tyrant. The author did a good job showing this, but it happened a bit too quickly, then had diffused by the time the other kings returned.

This was my least favorite of the series because there wasn't anymore romance. There are a lot of violent and gory dragon fighting scenes. Overall, this failed to answer the many questions that the author never answered. One question was: why all queens are human, and if they are human, why couldn't Aspen become one in the first two books?

As usual, various scenes didn't have enough description and there were a lot of plot holes. For instance: eagles cannot fly at night, yet one flew (not only at night) but across the entire Pacific Ocean rather quickly in order to warn the fire dragons in Hawaii. The book could have been better.

The kings

This series started out so promising but books 3-5 didn’t live up to my expectations set in books 1&2. The story was interesting and captivating in the beginning but was all over the place in the second half. Sid and aspen were so strong and skye and hazel were so weak. Skye was a terrible “king” and she didn’t deserve the title. She did nothing but whine and complain and run away. Hazel also didn’t deserve to be queen. She may have had a good plan but she could have gone about it differently. She was the betrayer and letting Val take the blame for that was wrong. I liked that they didn’t just go out and kill all the humans but they certainly could have stood their ground a little more. They looked weak and let the humans walk all over them. I really hoped the conclusion to this story would improve but I was more and more let down with the way things played out.

This book was my least favorite of the series, but it’s not that it was horrible. I think my main draw to the series was the romances, and this didn’t have that. Actually there were some trust issues which aren’t my favorite read. Also, out of all the books in the series the storyline seemed the most all over the place. That may be partly due to the fact we suddenly had six perspectives going on, and half of the time they were in three different places. There was a lot going on. Plus the story called for them to not really know what was going on, which meant the reader didn’t either. It made sense, but it’s not my favorite style. I also think because there was so much going on somethings didn’t get wrapped up because they were forgotten. Most of the things were though. The series kind of ended open ended and it makes me wonder if there wonder be another series written that is connected to this.

Aspen, Hazel, Rowan, Obsidian, Skye, and Valentine have to stop the white wich. The leader, cowered, and the betrayed. The Knights actions will kill the princess. The Queens will be the key. Only one king can rule. So what happens to the other two?
Who are Obsidian, Skye, and Valentine? They are the three kings. They can be the leader, cowered, or the betrayed. They could also be the tyrant, brave, or the betrayer. They have these roles to choose between. These roles are there true nature. Obsidian has natrue leading skills. Skye has run away from things her hole life. Valentine is jealous and fell's betrayed. Obsidian: Leader he was never demanding. Skye: Brave even though she was sacred she stayed to fight. Valentine: Betrayer had traitorous thoughts. This is there true nature.
I thought it was good it kept me on my toes.

resolution to a series arc

This is a predictable story. It’s important to read the previous books first. The prophesy gives an outline to this story and makes things predictable. The white witches background and abilities are pretty interesting. Her ability to enchant and control. There is questions on whether she bewitched past characters but the mystery was never confirmed. The resolution of the prophesy left some things hanging and the story ends after the war ends. The characters always felt like teenagers and not adults. This is appropriate for young adults. It consistently follows a storyline. You can pick which couple to route for. This book focused mainly on Sid and Aspen and utilized the other couples to explain the prophesy. What happened to the other couples at the end did not make sense and was not explained, but it seemed to have an HEA for all.

I am glad to see that Hazel came into her own, but there was no reason for the transition. I wanted to see growth, but this was like a body snatcher switch and bait situation. Other than that. I love that they all came together and that the prophecies were revealed but I will be forever saddened about the Princess. She lived how she wanted and was loved, but that was so heartbreaking.

The way people behave was profiled so well in this. Aspen was a true Queen and was able to point these behaviors out in a way that made people pause and rethink. Sometimes it was by intimidation, but mostly by reason conveyed with a confidence to demand attention.

This book was full of tragedy and the ending bittersweet but I loved it.

PS: I was not a fan of the narrator for the audiobook. The voice changes were inconsistent and she did not show the correct emotion for what was happening.

Except for the super sad part, I thought the way the prophecy worked out was genius! Aspen was the overall VIP of the story and her standoffs with the president were epic. This ending had some moments that would make for a visually stunning movie. My only problem was that everything wasn’t answered. And in fact more questions were raised.

For instance, what is done with the gems? Why did those eggs not hatch for so long? Do they learn the magic that was at the middle of this? Why can’t the two remain dragons with human form like the royal line?

I thought this story read the smoothest and had me the most emotionally invested. This isI 💯 a book that needs to be read in order of the series, but I do recommend reading the entire series!

This will be a review of the series as a whole. While this series has an interesting setup, I feel that it's execution is lacking. There is little character development for the main characters and they are quite often 2 dimensional. But there is one thing that bothered me more than the rest, and that was Rowan. At the beginning, Rowan is a side character who has crippling anxiety. Yet he has over time learned to cope with his anxiety to led a more normal life. When throw into the fray with dragons, he grows stronger and more sure of himself. Yet all that growth was slapped in the face when his anxiety gets magically healed. He is no longer the hero fighting his enemies and his inner struggles, but instead a "knight" who has been "fixed."

My very own curiosity really powered me through this series🥴.
The plot was just barely interesting enough to continue. I'm glad this is over. I just needed to know what happened. I really didn't like any of the characters.. They were all pretty childish, especially the ones that are 500+ years old. Then these 18-year-olds are threatening and convincing the president with these 'grand' ideas that NO ADULT could think up? mmmmmmk. Unfortunately, the climax and ending were lame, unexceptional, and rushed through. Maybe if I were around 10 years old, I would've enjoyed it.
Listening to the audiobook probably didn't help. Aspen and Rowen are twins, but he sounds like he's 8. That was really difficult to ignore.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book and it was awesome loved the fifth book the completion of the books brings the story to a great ending
Sid and his friends wake up and they are at war the white queen instead of attacking the dragons she is attacking the human cities and the humans go after the dragons so they go to war will they all come out ok or will they never have dragons on earth this was an awesome end to the series so sad to see it go but loved every minute of it Michelle

Wow, what an amazing book. This one was so heartbreaking, I knew that we'd say goodbye to some characters but it still crushed me. I am not going to say more on that because I don't want to spoil it for others, the action never stops throughout the whole series. The dragon law is very well written, and extremely interesting. The way Kimberly Loth describes everything in all of her books is remarkable, I can honestly say it's what drew me in from the very start. I loved every character in this book, even the bad one's. The back story is something you learn bit by bit throughout the entire series, this is absolutely my favourite. I will definitely be buying the whole set in paperback.
