"Your not a victim, You are a surviver"
Reviewed for an honest review for Amo and Sarah Book Corner.
Picking Up The Pieces is the debut book for new author Sienna Grant. This is a gut wrenching and emotional tale of a woman who escapes an extremely abusive marriage, in search of a better life for her and her infant son.
Alexia Williams married Paul Benton at the tender age of 18. She was young, naive and thought she was in love. Shortly after being married, Paul's controlling ways quickly escalated to emotional and eventually to physical abuse. Just as a warning to you women who have abuse trigger, the first few chapters were difficult to read. I had a lump in my throat and tears streaming down my cheeks. I, myself have not been a victim of domestic abuse, but I do come from a home where it happened. This took me back to the 8 year old girl that witnessed the police showing up at our doorstep at all hours of the day and night. And let's face it, if these are triggers for you then you've either escaped and the worst is hopefully behind you or you are in the situation and are probably looking for a way out of it, this may give you the hope to do so! So, if you can endure those first few chapters, the rest of the book is totally worth it!
Eventually Alexia does escape with her young son, and with the support of her BFF, she begins a new life away from Paul. One chance meeting with a stranger, will eventually change her and son's future.
Blake Davids bumps into Alexia in a coffee shop, there is something about her he just can't forget. Eventually, months later, their paths cross again and he's not going walk away from the second chance he's been given to get to know her.
Obviously Alexia (Lex) has some self-confidence issues, but she is a strong woman. Her strength is inspiring! For one, the bravery and strength it took to endure the emotional and physical abuse that was dished out on a daily basis. I don't care what anyone says, you go through that kind of abuse you are not a weak person! At that point you do what you have to do, to survive until you can make it out safely. The courage that Alexia exhibited when she finally left Paul for good, was awe inspiring.
Blake definitely had his work cut out for him, but he sensed from the beginning that Alexia had walls and boundaries that slowly needed to be broken down. He was so patient, kind and protective... protective, not controlling, there is a huge difference!
This book was just so emotional. I went from my heart breaking for Alexia and her son, to picking up the pieces and putting my shattered heart back together, when she finally met the man she absolutely deserved!
I would highly recommend reading this book. Like I said before, if you do have triggers, it's only the first few chapters. Once you get through those it's totally worth it!
Picking Up The Pieces is Author Sienna Grant's Debut Novel, I am still trying to grasp the fact this is her first book. I wish I could rate this book higher than the 5 Star allowed , the writing was absolutely flawless I actually felt as though I was living these two characters story.
I'm not giving anything anything away in my review because I feel there's so much to experience and learn from, yes the first few chapters had some triggers but personally the way it was written I feel it will benefit anyone who is or has been in an abusive relationship.
This story is solid it takes us through so many emotions I literally had to stop re-group and compose myself while reading what Alexia (Lexi) was going through in her abusive marriage to Paul. I wanted to jump in this book and extinguish this beast.
Lexi was young when she married and she had a son Grady who is the reason which made her go on and finally get out.
In comes Blake (swoon) in a chance meeting with Lexi he had this undeniable pull towards her but being hurt himself he recognizes the signs so he knows he must proceed with slow caution.
These two prove that second chance love is real , it's out there and proves that two damaged souls can heal to become one.
Please if you have not picked up this book yet "run don't walk " grab it it's moved up to one of my top favorite reads I cannot express enough how beautifully written this story is.
I am already anxiously awaiting the sequel to this amazing and beautiful read .
Thank you Sienna you are now on my "Must Read Author List"
I absolutely loved every second of reading this book! The story follows Lex, who is in an abusive and violent marriage. For the sake of both herself and her baby son she needs to get away from her husband, but every time she tries to leave, he just beats her harder. Eventually she gets out and moves to London to be nearer to her best friend Becki. She finds herself a flat and a new job and somehow manages to find a new friend - Blake. Blake is absolutely smitten with Lex and he can't understand why she doesn't see herself the way that he sees her. He is aware that there is a vulnerability about her, and wants nothing more than for her to open up to him, tell him her story and be there for her for the rest of their lives. With Blake's help, Lex manages to find herself again and starts to pick up the pieces of her life.
This is such a thought provoking and inspiring story. It's sickening to know that people go through this every day, but some aren't as lucky as Lex - they don't get free. This book has shocked me, made me cry and made me smile. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it; it is beautifully written and had me hooked straight from the start. A massive 5 stars from me!
If your going to read this book first of all you will need to do these things 1. Do your housework and 2. Feed your kids because you will neglect everything when you start this book... I haven't managed to get this in to a book in months Its ace I felt a connection with the characters and the story was just brilliant I cant say one bad thing about it I can't wait to see what comes next from this author definatly a 5* and should be on everyone's tbr list
I have to admit this is not my usual type of read. I went in with some trepidation because the subject matter is demanding, and I knew this was the author’s debut novel... but what I discovered was a masterclass in how to write dark and challenging themes that elicit raw emotion, perfectly counterbalanced with lighter shades of humour, joy and sweet romance..
The author creates such powerful and believable characters....Alexia is a broken soul, sensitively described and Blake has suffered his own heartache..but the connection between these two felt real and despite their reservations and trust issues I was invested in their relationship; no matter the journey they had to take to get there ...
My only reservation about the narrative is that I felt, at times, there was too much emphasis on the mundane, with detailed descriptions of day to day events, which impacted on the plot development... on occasions less is more...
That said...this is a touching and at times heartbreaking story......a box of tissues is a most definite requirement....these are both emotionally scarred individuals but the warmth and support of friendship and family shines through and in the end it is the overwhelming emotion of love that remains forefront in my mind.....I received an advanced copy of this book from the author
I was both scared and excited to read this book. Scared given the storyline but excited at the same time. I just didn’t realise how much of an impact this book would have on me….
"You can recover from bruises but it’s the words that leave the biggest scars, they stay with you forever, no matter how much you try to forget."
I was literally in bits more times than I care to admit. The opening chapters are delivered with such realism. As a reader, I lived all those scenes with Lex and found it heart wrenching.
How do you pick yourself up again after going through such an experience? How do you learn to trust in someone with your heart again? How do you find the will to overcome? Well, that’s easy for Lex. She will do all this and more for her son, Grady.
Blake has experienced the worst betrayal at the hands of someone who professed to love him. Determined to never put his trust in another woman again, he didn’t plan for Lex. Or the love he would have for her son.
For me, it was Grady who stole my heart in this book. He is the centre of Lex’s world. He is the catalyst for her to break free. And Blake loses his heart to this little boy just as much as he does to Grady’s mother. The moments between Blake and Grady are so special. This is unconditional love at its finest.
As I’ve said, this book had me in a mess. I laughed, cried, and swooned my way through this heartfelt story. No matter how dark our world may be it only takes one person to light our way.
"They say you have to take a walk in the dark before you can enter the light. Blake is my light."
As a debut author the writing wasn’t perfect, but who cares! This is a story written with heart and I could see her style of writing evolving as the book progressed.
I can’t wait to read Liv’s story in Book 2.

This amazing book took me on an emotional roller coaster! This debut book by this awesome new author was so beautifully written. This story begins with Alexia (Lex) trapped in an abusive marriage. Paul is not only verbal and emotionally abusive but he escalates into physical abuse. Lex has a baby, Grady, who is her whole world. Lex knows she has to get out before Paul kills her! Lex doesn't tell family or friends how it really is with Paul. Paul ends up beating her pretty bad one night, neighbors end up calling the police This is her chance to get out!
Lex meets her best friend Becki for coffee and runs literally into a man before Pauls last beating. She thinks she'll never see this man again. After getting out on her own for herself and her son, she runs into Blake at a bar. They strike up a friendship which quickly changes on both parts. This is a story of Lex learning to love herself again and Blake. It is a great journey to read about them falling in love with each other and as a family!
This is such a heart wrenching story. I cried at what Paul did to Lex, then I laughed, cried and cheered for Lex and Blake to be together. I hope to read more of this couple in the future!
Congratulations on a wonderful debut novel Sienna Grant.
5 Stars...I'd give more f I could!

What a heartfelt debut from new author Sienna Grant. It's full of emotion that really pulled at the old heart-strings, I fell in love with both Blake and Lex and I have never hated a character as much as I hated Les's hubby Paul. Sienna has captured the balance with vulnerability and strength of both characters perfectly.
A little run down: Lex has been through the mill, she has been abused by her hubby Paul for too long but after another violent outburst and Lex being hurt pretty bad she decides enough is enough she has to leave before he ends up killing her, as it's not just herself she has to think of she also has to think of her 9 month old baby Grady. This is when Blake comes on the scene, they have met briefly before at a coffee house but they bump in to each other again while Lex is working as a waitress and Blake is having dinner with his father. Not being able to get her out of his head Blake persue's Lex and breaks down the wall she has around her heart. They have both been through their fair share of heartbreak, can they piece each other back together? and get the happy ever after they so clearly deserve. I can't wait to read more from this author, she really knows how to capture the emotion and pull you in so you feel like you are living it. A job well done for a fantastic debut. 5* heart wrenching stars....
Picking Up The Pieces was an outstanding story of a young mother trying to survive an abusive marriage. Once Lex is able to break away from the abuse, she begins a new life with her loyal and supportive friend by her side. A chance meeting with Blake and her life takes new direction. While Blake is recovering from his own horrible past relationship, he stands by Lex's side as she rebuilds her life and self esteem.
I truly enjoyed the story of Blake and Lex. It pulled out all of my favorite emotions when I am reading. You could truly FEEL Lex's fear, hope, love, sadness...all the feels!
Great Job by Sienna Grant! I am looking forward to Olivia's story.
Technical aspect: When reading this on my Kindle, the heart icons floated around and sometimes covered the end of the first two sentences; however, when reading on my phone app they were all in the right place. There were some places where I wasn't sure who was talking and would need to re-read the sentence to decipher. There were some other minor editing issues as well, but I can't be certain if they are all editing or the fact that the author is from the UK and uses words differently than I am used to.
This is a debut novel from this author, and I must just say, that I am totally amazed, as I would never have known! This is the story of Alexia, who is a victim of an extremely abusive relationship, and Blake, who sees straight away that Alexia has walls, and realises that he is going to have his work cut out for him in order to build her self confidence and worth back up. Will Blake succeed? Do yourself a favour, and read this book for yourself!! This is an emotional, heartbreaking, and totally gut-wrenching storyline. This author has done a fantastic job in writing this storyline with such a difficult background, but hats off to Sienna for having the talent to captivate the reader throughout. Cannot wait to read more of this authors work! Congratulations Sienna!!
A great story told from two POV's Alexia and Blake, two lost souls in a state of repair.
Alexia flees her marriage with her son and starts a new life in London when she meets up with Blake. Alexia suffered abuse until she couldn't take it anymore. Blake not long split from his crazy ex who he caught cheating with her Boss wasn't looking for love but it found him. They find each other. Alexia finds the man she deserves. For her and her son Grady.
Three hearts become four to complete the family ;)
I absolutely loved this book. Amazing debut novel. This author sent me on an emotional rollercoaster while reading this book. I cried so hard during some parts that I'd have to stop reading. I absolutely loved everything about this book. The characters and the story line was absolutely amazing. I was hooked from the first page until the last. One of my favorite reads this year. Everyone needs to read this book. This story also helped me and reminded me of myself. I can't wait to see what this author comes up with next. I think I've found a new favorite author.
I sat broken hearted reading this book as this is some womans life the book came to life for me I was gripped from the start it takes allot to walk away by the end of this book it was happy tears thanks sienna can't wait for book 2 x
Picking Up The Pieces is a story of a woman who faced abused with her husband all through out their marriage. I will admit that I had a trepidation starting this because books that tackles domestic abuse is such a difficult story to read. It is a kind of book that can make or break a story. Sienna Grant provided us a story - her actually debut novel - that will tug at one's heart. It will not only open up your eyes but your hearts as well with the way the author presented every events of the abuse and the way the heroine collected herself to pick up the pieces of herself after finally having the courage to leave his husband.
In this story, Alexia managed to finally be free of his husband and start over again with her baby, Grady. It was a daunting move but Alexia was determined to set up a new life for her son. A friend of her helped her to get settled and eventually, life for her has been fine.
Blake accidentally bumps into Alexia in a coffee shop one day. It was for a fleeting moment but there's just something about her that he can't forget. He also noticed the bruised marks on her face that she tried to conceal with a make up.
After several months since their first encounter, they meet again. This time Blake was determined to get to know the girl who he can't seem to shake off his mind.
Their road to happy ever after is not an easy one but all of it was worth it. It is such a wonderful journey to be with both of these characters. Their strength and feelings for each other is something very heartfelt. Both of them had an ugly and heartbreaking past. Both of them had to pick up the pieces of what was once broken and this couple did it together.
A story of finding courage and staying strong whatever life may dish your way, Sienna Grant's Picking Up The Pieces will give you an emotional ride you wouldn't want to miss. Full of emotion, you will surely fall in love with the characters and you will definitely feel for them. Recommended highly to readers who love to have high-powered emotional reads. You will surely love this story.
*Voluntary review of Advance Reader Copy. I was given a complimentary copy of this book by Obsessive Pimpettes Promotions.
What a debut! This was a promising read, from an author I already want more from. You name an emotion and I probably felt it while reading this book.
This story centers around Alexia and Blake. When we first meet Alexia, she is somewhat broken, but still feisty. Blake was coming off of a bad relationship, and not looking anything. However when they meet, the attraction between them is instant, and a moment neither or them are able to forget.
The way in which Sienna Grant has written this book, made me feel as if I was living each moment alongside Alexia. At times, this was not an easy read; I cringed, winced, and cried as she suffered.
What I truly appreciated in the story was the lack of victim blaming. Never once was it asked "Why didn't she leave?" Despite all the horror that Alexia goes through, she still has a backbone, and she is a lovable, courageous heroine.
The development in her character is simply brilliant. Though Blake helps her, she has an inner strength which I found made her all the more endearing.
Blake, was the ultimate swoon-worthy hero. Him and Alexia complemented each other beautifully, and their relationship was a joy to watch unfold. I loved it all; from the simplicity of their first meeting to their smoldering sex scenes which were steamy but tastefully written.
Overall, Sienna Grant has written an emotional, sweet and thought provoking read about what it means to find a second chance at love, learning to trust, and also find your inner strength. I can't wait to see what else this exciting new author has in store.
Picking Up The pieces by Sienna Grant is an emotionally charged, raw yet beautifully told story of a woman who succumbs to abuse but then gets the courage to leave her abuser. I LOVED Alexis. The way she grew from being abused, to standing up for herself and her son.
Blake is AMAZING! I love a sexy, hot, alpha male with sensitivity. I ADORED his character, and how he helps Alexis learn to love herself.
This tells a story isn't an easy one to read, to read about abuse is hard, but so well worth the dark journey. Picking Up the Pieces is an emotional rollercoaster, raw yet real. I'm a HUGE fan of Sienna Grant. She tells FANTASTIC stories that are relatable and real. With characters we LOVE!
*I voluntarily read a copy from the author. This is my honest review.*
this story has some hard subjects but Ms grant has really done them justice. I'm so shocked this is Ms grants debut book she has done a fab job. alexia is such an amazing character!
This is Sienna’s debut book and it is an emotional, touching sometimes gritty raw read.It focuses on Lex a young woman stuck in a marriage to an abusive man she cant escape from, her only solace is her baby son Grady. When they first married she was happy and in love but things soon changed and Paul was no longer the man she married after years of abuse she finally escaped and left hoping to make a new life for her and Grady. Blake Davids bumped into a stranger in a coffee shop one day that would change his life forever. He never forgot her and she always wondered about him until their paths crossed again, has fate given them a second chance? Blake Davids was determined not to lose Lex a second time around.Blake has his own relationship issues, so both were scared of getting hurt but Blake slowly but surely crept inside Lexs heart and life,he took care of her and her son and she couldn’t help but fall for him.He heals her broken heart and restores her faith in love, their relationship blossoms quickly into a passionate love neither can deny. Will Lex get her happy ever after and have the life she truly deserves?
This book just blew me away Sienna wrote about a sensitive subject with such care and emotion I often got overwhelmed at what Lex had to suffer at the hands of her husband. You’ll cheer for her as she finally escapes and finds love in the arms of Blake. He was such a wonderful character I instantly loved him…..kind,caring,compassionate and loving he took his time, he never pushed Lex for more than she could give.It was wonderful reading how she came alive again because of him.Its a story that will make you cry its gritty in places yes,but Sienna’ s done it brilliantly, you feel her pain and her emotions as if you were there. The secondary characters were great to read Jack and Amelia, Blakes dad and sister Liv and of course Lexs bestie Becka and Mason all played their parts in an amzing story I cant wait for book two from this talented new author. A fantastic read that will stay with me for a long time to come,a book that sends the message after suffering so much feeling lost and alone, you can find love again, rebuild your life and be happy
Picking up the pieces is Sienna Grants debut novel and also the first book in the Broken series.
Our leading lady, Alexia is a beautiful character inside and out. But having been a victim of domestic violence, it would take a long time for her to believe that. My heart bled for Alexia and I think the subject matter was handled superbly.
Excerpt: I don't know what hurts more? My body or my pride. But then again my pride was gone the first time he raised a hand to me.
The physical abuse versus mental abuse stripped Alexia (Lex) of so much, but with a fresh start on the cards, and a mysterious stranger, prepare to fall in love with Blake Davids.
Excerpt: ...I can't help how I feel, she's consumed me, I'm totally lost in her. Her personality, her beauty and her heart, she has so much love to give, but it's been locked up tight, and now she's started opening up to me, I'm going to find that key to her heart and open it up for good....
Blake is Lex's constant and he literally rebuilds her. Shows her how beautiful and loved she is. How strong she really is. "Picks up the pieces" ;)
With the dual perspective, around the middle of the story some of the crossovers seemed a little unnecessary and repeat what the reader already knows but it's a pretty minor fault in comparison to a story that I can honestly say I whole heartedly enjoyed.
The author has dealt with a really emotive subject, written it well and given us characters to stay in our hearts. An amazing debut novel from Sienna Grant and I can't wait to read more in this series.
Picking Up The Pieces was written by debut author Sienna Grant. I really enjoyed reading this book. It was very thought provoking and written in such a heartfelt manner. It contains just the right amount of angst and will even make you swoon a little!
Alexia is stuck in a very unhealthy marriage. To make matters worse, they have an adorable son, Grady. Alexia wants nothing more than to find a way out for them both and start over in a new life. Once this is accomplished, Alexia is able to begin experiencing life without worrying about reprimand.
Speaking of experiencing life.......when Alexia meets up again with Blake, the sparks fly! Blake and Alexia had a very brief encounter one time before in a coffee shop. Blake couldn't seem to shake her from his mind so when they meet again he's not going to take any chances on losing touch.
To find out what happens next you're just going to have to buy the book! Again, I really enjoyed reading this debut book and look forward to many more. Sienna Grant has a way of taking you into the story, making you feel all the emotions. Both the story and characters are very memorable.
First book from a new author, couldn't put it down. Loved this book and can't wait for the next.
This is the story of Lex and Blake, both have recently escaped bad relationships and are offered a second chance at love. Lex is a strong character who escapes domestic violence, with a young child, Blake has just found his fiancee has been cheating. From an initial passing moment in a coffee shop, the first time they cross paths, they each think of the other.
After a chance meeting at Lex's workplace, again in a nightclub and then the park, they both want to get to know each other better. Their chemistry is immediate and their relationship develops quickly and passionately. Leading to some very hot scenes.
Loved everything about this book, if you love a second chance romance with a HEA you need to read this book. Congrats Sienna Grant.
I love finding new authors and I'm so glad I find Sienna Grant. This is a powerful story of a woman determined to survive and escape her violent husband, there are some powerful and very emotive scenes that show the frightening side of domestic abuse. But it shows, more powerfully, the strength of survival in a woman so broken down. As Alexia flees and starts a new life, she meets a man that she had once bumped into so briefly in her old town, why was he now he on the other side of the country? I love insta-love and as Blake and Lex are drawn to each other Lex realises that she still has desires that her ex had not beaten it out of her, and that love truly does exist. This really is a feel good story, a sit down with a coffee and bar of chocolate book. I can't wait to read more from Sierra Grant. Received as an ARC.
4 1/2 banging debut stars! It's always a chance we take when reading a new to us author that it can go one of two ways and it totally went the way I really really wanted. An emotive and heartfelt story from the first page...the often hidden side of domestic abuse and one woman's struggle to find the courage and strength to leave an abusive marriage. Well written and a well rounded story with both depth and just enough description to pull you in and at times leave you breathless. The characters in the book both likeable and easy to root for...Alexia beautiful inside and out...courageous and so very strong...Blake, wow, I adored him, he was sweet, sexy, strong and the perfect balance for our Lex! A very good debut from Sienna and I'm eager to read more of her work that I'm sure will just get better and better as she finds her niche in the book world! Congratulations
Right, where to start........Ok, so, in this we meet Alexia who is stuck in an abusive relationship. It's not just physical abuse though, it's also mental abuse. She knows she has to get out as she knows that the next time Paul hits her it could very well be the last. She also fears for the safety of her young son, Grady..... Then we have Blake, he's also gone through a rough time, not in an abusive way but his trust in women has been left seriously dented...... What transpires is a story of how 2 people learn to trust and love again. This was such a beautifully written story with a very hard to read storyline. The things that Paul says and does to Alexia are vile beyond comprehension! I really did love this story and it managed to pull me in from the very start. I do feel it needs a few tweaks but that's all. Overall an amazing story and i can't wait for book 2 in this series !
Wow words cannot describe how much I loved this book. I love Blake and lex the relationship they have is beautiful. lex is married to Paul who is abusive they have a child together Grady. one night the beating is so bad the poilce are called and finally lex is free. after moving to be near her friend she bumps into Blake who she quite literally bumped into in a cafe a couple of weeks before. Blake what can I say this man is gorgeous how slow and loving he is with lex just made my heart melt. I will say the first few chapters are gut wrenching and my life did I cry I wanted to jump into my kindle and kill the evil that was Paul. cannot wait for the next book and for a first time author the book is fantastic. I hope to be reading more soon from Sienna Grant.
Im always pleased to be find new authors to try and I'm glad i found this lady.
A beautiful story of determination and an overriding need to escape the most awful circumstances. This story describes the very stressful and horrendous experiences of living with domestic abuse. Lex takes the difficult decision to leave her abusive husband Paul. She unexpectedly meets a guy and the rest is history as they say! It wasn't a smooth ride for Blake and Lex but the whole way through you are cheering them on. Can Blake and Lex make it through......you will just need to read to find out.....but lets just say i wouldn't walk away from Blake.
Thank you for such a lovely read! So looking forward to seeing where this story takes Blake and Lex.
Alexia is trapped in an abusive marriage, barely managing to keep things together and only then for the sake of her son. She finally manages to make her break when the man that promised to love, honour and protect her when he pushes her one step too far.
This book was a story of healing and empowerment. Yes it's a love story too, and the beautiful relationship that developes with Blake and Lex is just lovely, but it was the way Lex became the woman she was always meant to be that had my emotions rising to the surface.
Picking up the pieces. I loved this book from the moment I opened it. It invoked every emotion I have in me. The beginning got me angry and upset for the life Alexia and her baby had to endure with her abusive husband Paul who I wanted to kick the s**t out of him!!!!! But the new life she caved for herself was hard and stressful but she got to meet the most amazing man and found love and happiness again in Blake. This book drew me in to the world Sienna Grant wrote about and I could not put it down. I can't wait for the next book by this new author.
