After the events of the first book, Freya has joined the Institute - an organization created to help Espers control their powers, and she thought she’d finally found peace.
That is, until Anti-Esper weapons find their way into the hands of The Coalition, a radical group who is determined to kill anyone with powers. At the same time, the Sky Cult has arisen, claiming that Espers have the right to rule over lowly humans. The timing couldn’t be worse, as all of this happens three days before Esper Day, the first holiday designed to show that humans and Espers can coexist.
Now Nathan, Freya and the team have to fight both organizations in a race against time before one of the radical groups tips the scales, and plunges the entire world into their own version of Armageddon.
This was a really good read. It was packed with action just like I hoped it would be and I got to read some amazing fight scenes that were written beautifully. So glad to own a physical copy of this book.
After reading the first book Esper Files, I was so fascinated by the idea and the plot of this book that I just couldn’t wait to read Book 2 and once I got my hands on it, I finished it real quick BUT as always, life got in the way and I’m only now getting to posting its review.
This book starts off exactly where the first one left off. I don’t want to give out a lot of spoilers by explaining the plot but I’ll try to explain as much as possible by being as vague as possible. So, this review is spoiler-free.
We start off by being introduced to two new epic villains, Jupiter– with the power of lightning and thunder, and Lichtmann– who is pretty much a ball of raging light and if you know German then you understand why that makes sense. [P.S: Licht in German is light and Mann is man]
We also have another villain-ish character introduced to us named Red Cap who reminded me a LOT of Deadpool, in his abilities and his character. But I must agree, reading his parts had me scowling and laughing.
And then, of course, we have Freya and Nathan, two main characters, one who controls ice and the other can pretty absorb any power and make it his own, with the only drawback being that he HAS to tap into the emotions behind the power.
I loved the idea of an Esper-day to celebrate and accept out the people who had been outcast for something that they weren’t responsible for, and also the anti-Esper Coalition, whose cool tech and weapons gave rise to some really epic land AND airship battles that I loved!
As with the first book, bad espers are out to burn the world and the good espers need to get out and save the world but of course, the whole thing that makes this book standout is the epic action scenes and the great characters who always kept me on the edge of my seat because I just couldn’t get enough of them.
I loved the way it ended too! Since I finished the book within a couple of days, I was left shocked and amazed by the way it ended. 10/10 would recommend to anyone who wants a fast-paced, humorous, action-filled, x-men-ish read because trust me, this book does not disappoint.
Now I’m really looking forward to reading the next book in the series because this book indicated that there was definitely something bigger happening at the bottom of it all.
Have you read this book? Or any steampunk books recently that are filled with action like this one? I’d love to know so don’t hesitate to comment down below!
This is the second book in this series. If you are a fan of steampunk, strong characters, good storyline, and plenty of action, than you have to check this series out. Although, I would recommend that you start with the first book, Esper Files. It helps to set the stage for this series and who all of the major players as well.
Nathan, James, and Freya are back fighting for good. Yet, I have to comment by saying that I found James to have been a little less of a strong voice in this book. Both Nathan and Freya had big roles in this book. Their powers really grew as did they; especially Freya. She has become more confident in her own skin and her abilities.
Now, we go to the bad side. Lord Bartholomew is back as well. Only this time, he is not alone. There are many others. My favorite is Red Cap. I agree with the other readers that his wit was what made him stand out. Besides, who else can get away with calling Lord Bartholomew "Barty" and still be standing. The whole time that Red Cap was talking all I could hear was Johnny Depp's voice as Captain Jack Sparrow voicing Red Cap. It was entertaining.
Action. Did someone request lots of action and battles. Yes, please. There was so much action that there was never a dull moment. The ending was a good lead into the next book. I am a fan of this author and series. Mr. Brass is a great storyteller that will leave you craving more!
~I received a free copy of this book for my honest review~
5/5 Stars
So what can I say except “Wow!”? The second installment of the Esper Files series is definitely as suspenseful as the first book…if not more so. There are so many great battle scenes in these books that it’s hard to get bored while reading. The threats the characters face in this book are greater than that in the first book and I think that’s also why I liked this one more. The characters have a little more depth given to them, and I liked that I felt as if I could connect with them more than I could before. Even the villains seemed to have deeper character arcs.
I eagerly wait the next installment in the series!
Esper Files 2: The Sky Cult by Egan Brass is a sequel that does not disappoint. I finished this book in two days. The action quickly picks up where the first book ended. It is quick paced and full of complex action. The new villains were superbly written and made you root for the Espers to win. The fight scenes were easy to imagine as they happened in the story. I can’t stop gushing over how much I enjoyed this story. I will definitely recommend it to my friends who enjoy steampunk and superheroes. I give it 5/5 Platypires.
The Sky Cult starts right where Esper Files left us. The amazing characters are just as fun and entertaining, with new “bad guys” added to the group, it makes the continuing story even better. This book is a must read for all Steampunk fantasy, sci-fi, and superhero lovers.
Overall, I found Esper Files: The Sky Cult to be a great read; an easy 4 Boundless Star book!
I very much looked forward to starting The Sky Cult by Egan Brass ever since I finished his first work, The Esper Files!
Brass has managed to avoid the expected letup a second in a series can sometimes deliver. The writer has deftly engineered his story to immediately match the pacing on which Esper Files finished.
This book—indeed this series thus far—is just plain fun to read! In Book 2 some new, and creatively designed characters enter the story which moves with well-determined speed as it moves toward the climax. The main characters of the Professor, Nathan, Freya and James all participate to pull the reader along in their experiences as espers living in a fictional London where they are not well-loved.
Even someone new to this series who hasn’t read the first book can thoroughly enjoy this story. This is an incredible testimony to the adroitness Brass demonstrates in his storytelling. While I would never advocate anyone to “judge a book by its cover,” the cover art is wonderful and it allows the reader the ability to visualize the characters and their setting more fully. If one takes the time to also read the first book, the experience and the information gained will only deepen a very enjoyable experience.
In a period piece whose classification is also fantasy, it would be to commit the sin of anachronistic placement—especially regarding technology and language. Brass has proven to be masterfully consistent and creates a world where the described experiences, their setting and the character’s grasp of the technology within the plot all seem extremely reasonable.
Within the story itself, Brass elegantly weaves what has happened in the previous book into the very warp-and-woof of this one. He allows the reader those “ah ha” moments which make the discovery of fictional fact such a pleasure. The reader can also see, though not anticipate to the point of prescience, some of the direction the author has allowed himself to go with the plot in forthcoming books.
It is not an easy task to create characters in which the reader can empathize with so easily. In The Sky Cult, the reader feels the emotional loss of characters referred to from the first book; they find themselves seeking that the proverbial scales be balanced. While I may not have noticed it while reading and reviewing the first book, the mention of the sacrifice of Freya’s brother at the midway point of Sky Cult triggered an emotional response of perceived loss by me the reader and on behalf of Freya empathically. This does not happen often in the genre of Fantasy fiction. Esper Files Book 2: The Sky Cult is a fast paced, thoroughly enjoyable read! This book really does create a constant desire to know what is going to happen next—which is annoying when one must go to sleep. I have been very impressed with Egan Brass and his writing abilities. I am certainly looking forward to his next adventure!
I received a copy of this book in exchange for review.
My main gripe with the first book in this series was that the character development was lacking. I had noted that we knew little to nothing about James, for example. In this second book, we learn a little more about James. I still think there could have been a lot more history-delving on many of the characters--Nathan or the Professor at the foremost. Yet, I see an effort was made to expand a little, so that's good. Hopefully there are some flashbacks or something in book three.
This series is very action-heavy. You're constantly running from one battle to the other. As I noted above, it causes the character development to suffer. However, it does work well for entertainment purposes. The villains are where Egan Brass shines. While I found one of them in this book to be too cartoonish and too much of a "try hard," I'll say Red Cap and Phantom Thief were great character additions. Red Cap was funnier than most of the other characters who try too hard to be funny. The Phantom Thief was a sexy and fun addition. Ironically, we know more about his past than some of the main characters. I feel that he was created very well.
Overall, this is a fun, fast-paced book. It lacks the "polish" that would make it a 5-star book (for me), but it's still an enjoyable read.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
After the first book I went into this one with mixed feelings. I was hoping the writing would become better with the second book, but it doesn't really feel like it and the X-Men inspiration is still far too blatant, especially with the proper introduction of Red Cap.
The plot is basically "hate groups plan to attack a parade and the heroes have to stop them". Throw in a phantom thief, some "magical" gems, and a weapon powered by said gems, and that's pretty much it. The story never felt overly exciting, and I honestly didn't care what happened next.
Many of the new characters in this book weren't all that good in my opinion. Red Cap was just too obviously based on Deadpool, he wasn't his own character.
Jupiter fell flat in most aspects. I got the impression he was supposed to be somewhat of a meglomaniac with a superiority/inferiority issue, but he mostly came off as timid and bland. Because of this his actions at the end didn't feel justified in his personality.
And The Phantom Thief started off feeling clicheed, then became somewhat underwhelming and ended up feeling too unrealistic once his backstory was revealed.
Superheroes are the best. I suggest only reading superhero stories, and Egan Brass can help you out. The Esper Files involve a group of people with cool powers (and judging from the book cover, a glorious sense of style.)
Naturally, they fight villains. That's really all you need to get where this title is going. I clicked "nostalgic" as the story's mood because it reminds me most of 80s and 90s superhero comics. Heroes bicker, they talk about their powers, they practice fighting. It's somewhere between X-Men and Agents of SHIELD.
The good guys are in a secret organization (always a good thing) and are fighting an organized enemy, in this case with the excellent name "Anti-Esper Coalition." That's right up there with Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and Superman Revenge Squad. More villains should be up front with their intentions. It's refreshing.
Esper Files 2: Sky Cult continues the deep, inventive world of the first book, but you don't need the first to enjoy the second. But get both.
I need more Esper Files as soon as possible. Is the next one ready yet? What about now? (reviewed by Joe Crowe, on Twitter at RevolutionSF)
Esper Files: The Sky Cult, picks up where the first book left off with Freya now a part of the institute, learning to control her powers as she tries to help keep the peace along with Nathan. After the end of the last book, we are introduced to some more villains or "the bad guys" as we normally refer to them. Their agenda at first seems quite clear, but as the story progresses, we realize that there is more to the front shown.
The Sky Cult is brought in for a specific purpose, but is that the whole point of this plot? Or is it just a diversion from the main plot line?
These are just some of the questions that may arise, but don't worry, you'll get your answers in due time. True to the author's style of writing, the story is action packed from the beginning, with a lot of things happening, one of the most important being The Esper Day. As preparations go on, we are introduced to a few new characters and the truth about some of the old ones are revealed. The progression is wonderful and the story is fast-paced, ensuring that the reader remains hooked until the very end. Red Cap and The Phantom Thief are interesting characters who add more life to the story and the professor seems to be hiding more secrets than anyone. Nathan, with his ability to abosorb and replicate other Esper's powers, once again manages to save the day, but at severe cost to his life. There are so many secrets surrounding him and his abilities and the importance Freya now has, that the story is quite intriguing. The concept of Esper's, and the whole Institute concept reminds me of The X-Men and Professor Xavier!
The story ends with a twist as usual, leaving us with a longing for more and a rough idea of what all can happen next. There seem to be endless possibilities and this makes it even more fun to read!
You can check out my review of the first book The Esper Files here.
The Esper Files: The Sky Cult is the second book in a science-fiction steampunk series. I enjoyed the first book so I was hoping to like this one too and I was not disappointed. In fact, I was in for a surprise.
The book opens with a very exciting scene. Freya has joined the Institute and she and Nathan seem to have become quite a team. The writing of this book was still simple but it was more fluid than the first one.
The plot of this book is extremely different from the first one. It was twisted and unpredictable. There is a lot of action and not a single dull moment. The concept was very original and I loved the steampunk bits. The plot was very well structured and the pacing was perfect.
I liked that there were many new characters or rather, villains in this book. They were all very unique and showed more of the power of Espers. I liked that we see more of James in this book and Freya’s role becomes more important. We see less of Nathan but I liked how the plot ultimately circles back to him.
The ending was amazing and action-filled. I liked how it wraps up everything but also sets the stone for more things to come. I loved this book more than the first one. This book is, no doubt, one of the best sequels I have ever read.
“I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a review. All opinions are honest and unbiased.”
Esper Files the Sky Cult is the perfect second book in the series written by Egan Brass. The plot is yet again full of action following a great pace that leaves me wanting for nothing more. There are some nice twists and hidden secrets that unravel beautifully and set up the story for some more secrets that I can't wait until they are being revealed in the future. The plot is very well developed as I am starting to get used to by this author.
Nathan continues to develop his powers and I love how the author constantly develops this unique character, who is definitely my favorite. Freya is growing into her own also becoming an important character in this series while I find that James is important but more of a side kick, at least in my opinion. The fiends this heros deal with are quite something and I love how the author can do quite a change on you.
I for one am hooked and can't wait for more books to come out in this series!
Sky Cult hooks you instantly in its opening sequence, where you are introduced to new villains - Jupiter and Lichtmann. The thrills don’t stop there though; the whole book is chockful of action sequences. I particularly enjoyed the lovable “bad” guy, the Phantom Thief.
Sky Cult is the second book in the Esper Files series. The story stands on its own, but you’ll miss out on some of the background and character development found in Esper Files (Book 1).
Yet another fantastic book by one of my favorite authors! I've thoroughly enjoyed all of his books that I've read and can't wait on the next one to come out! And both of my daughter's have become fans as well. Great finding books that both my kids and I both enjoy and can talk about together! I started the book and couldn't put it down, read it start to finish last night because I couldn't wait to see what happened next! But to do the book justice I highly recommend reading the series in order.
Great read, a cannot put down story that I read in a matter of hours. My second read from Egan Brass, the pseudonym for author Ryan Attard, who has moved near the top on my list of favorite authors! His books have it all, nonstop action, espers (think Marvel’s X-Men), sarcasm, humor, Steampunk and mutants (espers), who could ask for more. I very much enjoyed this book & can't wait for Book 3.
A great follow-up to the first book, James, Nathan, the Professor, and all the rest of this diverse magical cast continue protecting the world from natural and supernatural threats, as normal people rise against Espers, unhappy with the inequality of power they perceive.
This is a good story but there’s no lull. It’s always fight fight fight. By chapter 15, all you want to do is take a break from it all but then it’s more of the same for the rest of the book. It gets kind of boring for me. Throw in some breaks once in a while. That at least allows you to breathe.
OMG Egan Brass does it again with this gripping, action packed story. The Sky Cult will grab readers attention from the very first page with its brilliant display of supernatural powers, thrilling fight scenes, and dark and mysterious plot, I fell more in love with this amazing series
I was giddy with joy as I dived back into this steampunk fantasy novel. Egan Brass does not disappoint and gives you everything you loved about the first book. All the characters you love in first book return and are better than ever. I think I fell even more in love with Nathan's character this time around. His ability is unique and hard to control and I love seeing him struggle when he copies others abilities. I loved learning more about the limitations of his power and how he learns to control and accept them. Freya is now Nathan's partner and I really liked her in this book. She has better control of her powers and works so great with Nathan. Love them two. I noticed that James' role has changed in this book, but I loved that I still get to see him out in the field. I can see him becoming the leader of the Institute, at least I feel he being primed for it by the Professor. The Professor is by far the most clever of people and I love him dearly. Lord Mortfield also has a larger role and I love him teaming up with the Espers.
There were also some new characters introduced in this book. I must say that Red Cap is my favorite villain, and I loved it every time he made an appearance. He has some awesome abilities and is a very skilled fighter and the fact that he's absolutely insane and has no filter makes him funny and scary at the same time. I also really liked the Phantom Thief, I think he was a great asset to the story and hope to see more of him future books.
I loved that this book was fast paced and had me on edge till the end. This book seems to pick up not too long after the first book and takes us deeper into the conspiracy of who's behind all these plots attacks. I am seriously dying to know who the mastermind is. There are so many schemes and ominous people lurking about in this book that it has my mind spinning. I'm addicted to this series and I can't get enough. There are some twists and Egan Brass is talented in how he slowly reveals information that leaves me dying for more. I know that when everything is revealed my mind is going to be completely blown.
I highly recommend this book. I can't wait for the next one in the series.
After reading the second installment I'm really sure I'm not the main target group.
It's way too much action and not enough character development. But I still read it because I had to know what will happen next. I was especially interested in the Sky Cult and the Coalition and I was not disappointed in that showdown.
But I was disappointed with the characters. I had no chance to get to like them and I felt like (again) it was... inspired... by Marvel. We've got an assassin who is really a lot like Deadpool. A lot. I was really disappointed how Freya's brother seems to be simply forgotten most of the story, too.
I don't know... maybe it's too much male power fantasy in this series for my taste?
Disclaimer: I received a free copy through the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Thank you.
***THIS BOOK WAS RECEIVED FROM THE PUBLISHER*** It has been said before that there are no original thoughts. The way to appear original is dependent upon how well you can hide your sources. One of my qualms with the Esper Files series from the beginning has been that it feels very derivative. Right from the get-go, I felt the series was essentially just an X-Men clone set in the steampunk genre. While this was an interesting concept, too much of it was pulled from the popular franchise, making it a bit distracting.
In the sequel, Esper Files 2: Sky Cult, a few more references were worked in to help make the characters and story feel a bit more original. I picked up tones of anime like Fairy Tail and One Piece in this story, but I also picked up another blatantly obvious reference: Deadpool. Sure, I get it, he’s a fun character to write; but when his actions feel like the author wrote himself into a corner and couldn’t get out other than to throw in this red herring to distract the reader into thinking there was going to be a logical conclusion.
I will applaud Egan Brass for once again writing some very well-thought out characters, the trio of James, Nathan, and Freya being some of the best (aside from the eye-rolling, aforementioned “Red Cap”). The dialogue and banter between his characters really makes them entertaining. All this being said, the plentitude of typos in this book seemed to match the amount found in the original Esper Files. Some of them were pretty simple errors, which were made all the more confusing by the large vocabulary Brass uses to describe this alternate reality London. Clearly, he knows how to write with a lot of words, it’s just that an editor didn’t manage to catch a lot of the wrong ones.
Another exciting story that adds to the Esper Files universe, I give Esper Files 2: Sky Cult 3.5 stars out of 5.
A phenomenal sequel to The Esper Files, comes The Sky Cult, by Egan Brass. This Victorian Steam punk tale sees our heroes Nathan and James once again joined by young Esper, Freya.
The complex array of characters, along with a developed plot make for a satisfying read that flows well. Events are seen mainly from Nathan and Freya's 3rd person point of view, as well as the perspective of their potential foes as The Institute strives to put down all threats to their establishment.
I loved many things about this sequel, one being the secondary mutation involved in the abilities of the newly created Esper villains. Mr Brass has created a complex and mesmerizing world with even the minor details accounted for.
The term action packed would be an understatement owing to the number of gripping fight scenes throughout. The twist to this story? The Institute isn't just facing one foe but a potential three. A fondness for Mythology is made clear from the names of the new characters, such as Jupiter and Hades. This was a feature that I personally connected with due to my intense interest of Mythology since my childhood.
The Sky Cult ended in a shocking climax that leaves the way clear for a third book, should the Author choose to pursue the series.
A gripping read that will expand your imagination and inspire readers. Rated 5/5 stars. If I could rate it higher, I would.
"Esper Files: The Sky Cult" is the continuation of the first "Esper Files" book, and starts shortly after where the first book left off. Freya, whose deadly ice powers were revealed in book 1, is now in training at the Institute, and the Esper community is under threat from external misunderstanding and treachery within the House of Lords. Fortunately Nathan, James, and Freya are there to save the day...
Like the previous book in the series, this book can best be described as "steampunk X-Men." So if that sounds great to you, you're probably going to get a big kick out of it, and if it doesn't, you won't. The villains--who are new and impressive--are either dastardly schemers or tortured psychotics, the main characters continue to engage in super-heroics interspersed with banter and backchat, and the action flows thick and fast. The steampunk creations are inventive and fun, and we learn more about how Esper powers work, and in particular those of Nathan, who undergoes a considerable evolution over the course of the story. All in all, this may not be Literature with a Capital L, but it's good imaginative entertainment, full of zest and exuberance.
My thanks to the publisher for providing a review copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
This is Book 2 of the Esper Files series. The Espers are back. They are a group of people with various super powers, formed when an experiment to generate a massive amount of electricity went wrong.
Nathan and his crew encounter a couple of new creatures in this round of adventures. One is an Esper assassin in the employ of Hades known as Red Cap. He apparently can’t be killed. The other is not an Esper, just a very talented individual who calls himself the Phantom Thief. He goes up against Red Cap and numerous other people trying to kill him and miraculously manages not to die. He also manages to outwit Nathan and James. But eventually, he comes around to helping the Institute Espers because he regards Hades’ crew as his enemies.
The action in this book, just like in the first one, is pretty much non-stop, with a super-hero comic book feel. It’s not really believable, but then I guess it’s not meant to be. The puppet villains are destroyed in the midst of chaos, but the sponsor villains live to create mayhem another day.
Amazing! This tale keeps you hooked from the start. A steam punk story filled with action sequences just like the first installment, but with new interesting characters joining both sides: heroes and foes. The Institute is celebrating Esper Day with big floats and power demonstrations as a way to show society that they are not a threat. Meanwhile, there are other plans in place to kill any one with powers, with the development of weapons that can harm or incapacitate espers. And since two sides aren't enough, the Sky Cult plans to rule every esper in town. Its leader, who has god like powers thinks he is above and beyond human kind. Can't wait for the next. Note: I received an ARC for review and an honest and unbiased opinion.
I'm not going to repeat a synopsis of this book. That has already been covered by other reviewers and the author, but I will say how much I enjoyed Egan Brass' tale. This book is non-stop action from the first page to the last and encompasses some of the best of the steampunk/fantasy genre. Filled with original characters and some of the best villains I've seen in a while, Sky Cult is an exciting and fun read. While not great literature, this book is well worth your time. Enjoy yourself!
I received a beta copy of this book. My review is voluntary and the opinions my own.
The saga of the espers continues as enemies appear from all sides. Many characters are the same, and the level of interaction is very suitable for young adult readers. Again, vivid imagination and continuing action keep the story pumping. Although it is clear that more entries in this series are to be expected, the book follows a story arc to conclusion. The combination of Steampunk and superhero powers makes a fun and interesting read.
In Book #2 of the Esper Files, the Institute faces opposition on all sides. A radical group known as the Anti-Esper Coalition have got their hands on powerful anti-Esper weapons, while a group of Espers calling themselves the Sky Cult have decided that Espers should rule over humans. Nathan, Freya and the rest of the team have to battle both sides, all while dealing with corrupt Lords, assassins and thieves. If they fail, the entire world will be at risk.
Now, I did very much enjoy Book #1. As I started reading this book, I did start to go off it a little. The story is good – very good actually. There is almost non-stop action and excitement, there’s magical powers, and there’s a very clear-cut good vs evil scenario. However, it is almost as if the author is writing something they wish they could watch on TV. The writing style is lacking the depth necessary for a really good book. I can’t pinpoint exactly what is missing, because the story is good, the characters are likeable*, the plot is exciting, and the steampunk and magical aspects are fun. But something is definitely missing.
*(I really liked the Phantom Thief and Red Cap in this book. They’re both fun and sassy, and I love a bit of ambiguity in terms of goodie/baddie role).
This is still a good book (probably about 3.5 on a star rating), and I will probably carry on with the series when Book #3 comes out. I’m just saying, it’s not the best.
Thanks to Inkitt for providing me with a copy of the book in return for an honest review.
As with most genre fiction, there are those who write outstanding works of fiction that fit the criteria perfectly, and then there are those who jump on the bandwagon, hoping to sell a book in a hot category. I'm happy to say that the books in Egan Brass's Esper Files series fall solidly in the first group, and his second entry, "The Sky Cult," is no exception. This is a fast-paced, action-packed book that overflows with great characters, both good and villainous, and actually transcends the steampunk or paranormal genres that it would be associated with. It has action, adventure and quite a bit of humor as well, and is one of those books that you just can't help having a rip-roaring good time with. I could visualize each scene vividly, as the author did a fantastic job with descriptions and settings. I can't wait to continue this series and would read anything else by this author as well. Highly recommended.
