"Snowed in for Christmas: A Regency Romance" is book 1 in the Yuletide Travelers' Series, written by Isabella Hargreaves. The book takes place in 1813 Regency England. This is the first book I have read by this author. This is a short novella about a carriage breaking down and its passengers, two young ladies, Eleanor (21) and her younger cousin, Augusta (18), along with a passenger in another carriage, Viscount Robert Landers, age not mentioned, and Augusta's fiance, having to spend two snow-filled days and nights in a small hut. The story is beautifully written, showing Augusta's petulant selfishness, as well as Eleanor's calming/soothing effects on Robert. Eleanor has been in love with Robert from the moment he was introduced to Augusta and her. Augusta had originally been engaged to marry Robert's older brother, George, but George died, and Robert thought it was his duty, and for the sake of his elderly father, to continue the engagement. However, after the carriage accident, and being very aware of Augusta's selfish behavior, he suddenly realizes that he has feelings for the gentle, calm, and beautiful Eleanor. What will happen to the three people who are snowed in for Christmas. I gave this book 5 stars and recommend it to everyone like me, who enjoys a good, sweet, clean Regency romance.
This was a cute short story. Although I think the fact it was so short led to the author using the insta-love trope which was a bit much although in spite of that I did like it.
Reread 2022: I was in the mood for a short but sweet romance that I could listen to in an hour, so I decided to revisit this novella. It hit the spot nicely. I wish there were more audio romances on the shorter side.
Reread 2023: Still delightful. Read it this time rather than listening to it on audio.
Reread 2024: A cute cozy Christmas romance novella.
Reread 2025: This is an entertaining short romance that really works for me
Snowed In For Christmas is a beautifully written short story. This is my first book of Isabella's and she has proved that she is an extraordinary master story teller who has not only done her homework of the background very well, but has also brought all the characters to life. I would love to read her next book.
A clean short novella. Novellas are great for a quick short read, but the challenge for the author is to ‘build’ the characters and fit the storyline into a short number of pages, in this case around 50. This was okay. There were some odd bits. Augusta we are told is very driven by title and status, but seems to readily break the engagement and attach herself to captain Sir James. So she is giving up being married to a Viscount, who is heir to a Marquess, to attach herself, and apparently become betrothed, to a gentleman who is a knight. As she is an ‘Honourable’ she must be the daughter of a Baron or Viscount, so her family is a higher status than a knight. That does not fit what we are told about her, would she really settle for being the wife of a knight when she could expect to be a Marchioness? That immediately stood out. Secondly would Sir James have treated Robert as brusque and superciliously as he did. Okay as neighbours they would know each other, and Robert had been the second son. But Robert would always have been a Lord, he is now a Viscount, and will be Marquess. Additionally we do not know Robert’s military rank but he must have been at least a Captain same as Sir James, if not higher. I do not think Sir James would have been quite so dismissive. He could have made his point without effectively snubbing him. His actions might have antagonised the current Marquess who may have taken a dim view of the disrespect, and him taking away the lady he believes his son is to marry without a chaperone. So sadly whilst readable a 2 from me.
I like this short story And if I had my choice I think he did a very good pick of a bride
Add this story had good characters the evil Society lady and her poor cousin And a groom to be that realized perhaps he had made the wrong choice. As it turns out his intended bride decided to Change up the script. It was a little discerning as I read the story to see modern day words put into This story. I'm used to people who write Regencies to use those terms only. story
It's an okay book—nothing that made me go "wow," but it's simple and cute. A good short read before bedtime. I found myself questioning Augusta throughout the book, but when you immerse yourself in the historical context, you start to understand why she acted the way she did, and it doesn't seem so unusual.
I think it could be lengthen. I'm curious what will be Augusta's reaction when Robert and Eleanor were courting and eventually getting married. And how was her life after choosing the habitual blowhard?
What a wonderful Christmas story that can be read within a couple of hours! Just the right amount of intrigue, drama and Christmas joy. Including a HEA for the bride, groom, and both families.
Fun Christmas reading, and one of the most emotionally satisfying short stories I’ve read in a long time. Love the characters, and the ending. Everyone gets what they deserve!
