عبدہ اللہ حسین کو تحریروں کو یقینا مکمل پاکستانی ادب کہا جا سکتا ہے۔ باگھ میں بھی ایسے موضوع پر لکھی گئی تحریر ہے جس نے آگے چل کر ہمارے معاشرے میں وہ زہر گھولا جس کا خمیازہ آج تک بھگت رہے ہیں۔ ریاست اور اس کے ادارے اپنے ہی لوگوں کو مذہب اور حب الوطنی کی افیون دے کر ایک نہ ختم ہونے والی آگ کا ایندھن بنائے چلے جا رہے ہے۔
یہ تحریر کشمیر میں مجاہدین کی کھیپ کی تیاری اور بھیجنے کے اوائل دور کے تناظر میں لکھی گئی۔

The first and last novel of Abdullah Hussain which I read. It's a tale of love and motive being cultivated in mountains of Kashmir. You will have to retrieve central thought behind this novel. I read it page and page. I drank it like last drink for your life while sitting in mountains of my village.
One of the best novels I did read. Master Piece.

اداس نسلیں کے بعد عبدلله حسین کا یه دوسرا ناول ھے جو میں نے پڑھا ھے. اسد مرکزی کردار کا نام ھے اور اسی مناسبت سے ناول کا نام باگھ رکھا گیا.
روایتی ناول نگاری سے ھٹ کر یھاں کحانی کی بھول بھلیاں نھیں ھیں نه ھی کرداروں کی بھرمار ھے. منفرد اور دل سوز بُنت هے . ایسا نفسیاتی الجھاو کے سب کچھ اور واضح ھو جاے. عبدلله حسین جیسی کردار نگاری میں نے شاید ھی کسی اور کے ھاں پڑھی ھو. انسانی شخصیت کی دراڑیں اور گھاو میں نے ان سے ذیاده عمقیق نظر سے دیکتھے شاید ھی کسی کو دیکھا ھے.

A brooding introspective novel that appears to be plot driven but then descends into descriptions of seemingly endless meanderings in the jungles of Kashmir as well as in the protagonist's mind. Written between 1976 and 1978 in London, Tripoli and Faisalabad it tells the story of a young man Asad who goes to a remote village in Kashmir in search of a cure for his debilitating breathing problems. In the hamlet of Gumshud he is treated by and large effectively by a local hakeem and during his convalescence falls in love with his young daughter Yasmeen. The hakeem is mysteriously murdered one night, and during subsequent investigations Asad is apprehended and held illegally captive and tortured by the police as a suspect. After eventually getting free he somewhat inexplicably decides to cross the border as an army recruit to support dissidents in Indian Kashmir, though his real purpose it appears its to procure the leaves of a wild plant that the hakeem used to treat his ailment. Once across the border he witnesses poverty, local resistance and the involvement of the Pakinstani army in organising and arming this resistance to Indian rule. In due course he also sees some action, and then suddenly abandons it all to come back to Gumshud after a gruelling journey in disguise through the treacherous mountain terrain, living off alms on the way, only to be picked up for being a deserter by his recruiters.

Whether there is some deep symbolism here given his name Asad which means the lion and the leopard he often hears in the jungle, it never became fully evident. In all likelihood, Baagh or leopard is a symbol of a hidden but palpable fear of power and the violence it wields that grips the valleys as conflict and war appear on the horizon in view of the Kashmir conflict. Also the fear for abuse of power that he encounters during his illegal confinement and brutal treatment by the police.

This is a slow-paced and often repetitive narrative that at times drags painfully (especially in the police custody and travel through Kashmir parts) and often engages in nostalgia for a childhood long lost. There are indeed critical observations on the early days of Pakistani military support for Kashmiri resistance in India and in that sense it is unusual and prescient in its anticipation of how this foreign policy choice will impact the locals. Police brutality is also something that occupies much of the story. The mountain descriptions are often evocative and the aim as well as prose of the novel are refreshingly unconventional. Nevertheless, the novel never really grips me and I feel that it suffers from overwriting and also ambiguity. To sum it up I was underwhelmed. The author it appears couldn’t quite decide what he was endeavoring to do. I generally have a lot of appetite for digressions, descriptions, unusual and even vague and meandering plot lines and other structural innovations but this piece of writing kept going on and on without great self assurance or point.

For some of its positives I want to give it 2.5 stars but that isn't an option on this site.

میرا کتاب پڑھتے سمے اکثر من ہوتا کہ کوئی تو ایسی کتب ہو جس کی پڑھت کے وقت مجھے جگہ اور وقت کا ہوش نہ رہے۔ آسان عام فہم اور ندی کی طرح رواں نثر ہو اور میں کرداروں کے ساتھ ساتھ جنگلوں، بیلوں، پہاڑوں اور دریاؤں کے پار اترتا چلا جاؤں۔ عبداللہ حسین کا ناول "باگھ" جسے وہ اپنے تخلیق سفر کا سب سے اہم پڑاؤ مانتے تھے ایسا ہی ایک ناول ہے۔ آزاد کشمیر کے ایک دور افتادہ گاؤں "گمشد" میں پنپتی یہ کہانی جہاں مرکزی کردار اسد اپنی سانس کی تکلیف کی غرض سے آیا اور وہاں کے حکیم کے ہاں پڑاؤ ڈالے ہوئے ہے. "یاسمین" اسدی کہ "یاس" حکیم کی بیٹی کے ساتھ اسد کے پیار کی خوبصورت داستان پروان چڑھ رہی ہے۔ وہیں کبھی کبھار ایک "باگھ" کے دھاڑنے کی خوفناک آواز سنائی دے جاتی ہے جو بھٹک کر اس علاقے کے جنگل میں آ نکلا ہے۔ جوں جوں کہانی آگے بڑھتی گئی مجھے اسد اور باگھ (ہم معنی نام) کی زندگی اور کہانی میں ایک عجیب سی ہم آہنگی ملی۔ جو انجام تک جاتے اور بھی واضح لگی(شاید یہ صرف میرا خیال ہو)

تین سو ساٹھ صفحات کی شاید ہی کوئی ایسی تحریر ہو جو اس خوبصورت ردھم کے ساتھ آگے بڑھتی ہے۔ چند کرداروں کی یہ کہانی جس میں ہر کردار چاہے کتنے ہی مختصر دورانیہ کا کیوں نہ کو واقعات کو آگے بڑھانے کی ایک ناگزیر کڑی ہے۔ اچھے وہ پھر ولی ، حکیم میر احسن ، ذولفقار ،یا سرحد کے اس طرف کے کردار(سرحد کے اس طرف کیوں؟ یہی تو کہانی کی خوبی ہے۔ کبھی یہاں کبھی وہاں) سلطان، ریاض وغیرہ ہوں ۔ زندگی کی فلاسفی کو ہلکے پھلکے انداز میں بتاتی یہ کہانی سادہ مگر پر لطف نثر کا شاھکار ہے۔ سارے کردار اور واقعات کا بیان بہترین ہے پر مجھے اسدی اور یاسمین کے کرداروں کی کیمسٹری اور ان کے درمیان بے حد محبت مجھے اس کہانی کی خاص بات لگی. ایک اور بات جو میں نے نوٹ کی آخری دس صفحات میں مصنف کچھ ایسی باتیں بھی کہہ بتا گئے جو آج کل شاید ہی کوئی کہہ سکے

عبد اللہ حسین نے اپنا ناول باغ اس طرح لکھا کہ اس نے آس پاس کے علاقوں اور مناظر کی ہر ایک چھوٹی سی تفصیل بیان کی جس سے قاری کو یہ محسوس ہوتا ہے کہ وہ اس منظر میں بزاتِ خود شامل ہے۔ کہانی کے مرکزی کردار کے جذبات کی متاثر کن تفصیل
اس کے بچپن سے اور پھر مختلف حالات سے گزرتے ہوئے کہ وہ کیسے نوجوان میں تبدیل ہوا۔زندگی میں پیش آنے والے واقعات اور اُن سے کیسے نبرانداز ہونا ہے۔ اگرچہ مصنف نے ذکر نہیں کیا لیکن قارئین اندازہ لگا سکتے ہیں کہ یہ کہانی کشمیر کے علاقوں کے آس پاس کی ہے۔

second Novel of Hussain for me ,again produced a feeling of very pleasant experience of very rich writing, though un matched to Udas naslain,yet it's a master piece in terms of Hussain's detailed and beautifull narration of a simple story

بہت عرصہ سے عبداللہ حسین کو پڑھنا چاہتا تھا۔ لیکن اس ناول نے اتنا متاثر نہیں کیا جتنا میں اس سے امید کر رہا تھا۔

میں کئی بار ہی لکھ چکا لیکن سچ یہ ہی ہے کہ عبداللّٰه حسین ایک رائٹر ضرور ہے لیکن کمال کا نہیں کہہ سکتے بس نارمل ہی ہیں لیکن جو گمان تھا وہ تو ایک پرسنٹ بھی پورا نہیں ترا۔

صاحبو۔ اپنے کو تو اس ناول کی سمجھ آئی اور نہ ہی مزا آیا۔ نہ ہی یہ معلوم ہوا کہ عبداللہ حسین صاحب بیان کیا کرنا چاہتے تھے؟ انجام جاننے کی تجسس میں سارا ناول پڑھا لیکن آخری صفحے پر پہنچ کر شدید احساس زیاں ہوا۔ ناول پڑھنا لاحاصل سی محنت معلوم ہوا
