About the author

Jaume Vicens Vives was a Spanish historian, and is considered, along with Pierre Vilar, one of top influential Catalan historians of 20th century.

According to Eliseu Climent i Corberà, his 1954 book Notícia de Catalunya was a direct source and inspiration for Joan Fuster's influential 1962 book Nosaltres, els valencians. Vicens book was to be originally titled Nosaltres els catalans, but it was renamed under Josep Pla's advice, for fear of Francoist censorship. Fuster's work has the same structure and intention of Vicens'. The book was expanded and republished in 1960. Notícia de Catalunya had also a major influence on Jordi Pujol. Vicens was also a friend an influence for Joan Reglà.

I have pleasant memories of reading this book that I discovered in the old town library. At the time reading it I wished that every country had its own Vicens Vives and its own little introductory history.

The virtues of this book are that it is short. From memory the chapter on the 19th century is twenty pages long, while each other chapter is about ten. Secondly it doesn't assume prior knowledge. Every chapter gives a thorough overview of a given period of time that takes in social and economic developments as well as politics. It is a model crisp introduction to a topic.

Since the book was written under Franco not literally I hope, but stranger things have happened so the text stops, diplomatically, before he launches his revolt against the Republic. No doubt scholarship has moved on since publication but it is an excellent way to get a quick overview of Spanish history.

Υπερβολικά σύντομη εκδοχή της (πολύ πλούσιας) ιστορίας της Ισπανίας, γράφτηκε από Ισπανό για τους Ισπανούς, μιας και από ένα σημείο και μετά δεν έχει συνοχή αλλά πετά τα αποτελέσματα γεγονότων που θα έπρεπε να ξέρει από πριν ο αναγνώστης.

Mother moved back to Norway after divorcing Dad because she needed medical care which, despite her job as a nurses aide in the States, she could not obtain here. I visited her in Oslo after graduating from seminary and met Egil Karlsen, the man she was eventually to wed.

Around the early nineties, Egil and Mother retired and the two of them bought a condo on the Andalusian coast of Spain. Eventually, I was invited to visit there and did so three times, once with my wife, once alone and once with brother Fin. In preparation for these trips I would bone up on Spanish history, beginning with stuff about their civil war for the first visit and continuing with this and other books before the second and third.

This book content has "aged" a little bit but still is a good brief review and a good perspective of the major events in the evolution of the Iberian Peninsula.
