About the author

Malickathazhathu Pulluvazhy Narayana Pillai was born in the village of Pulluvazhy near Perumbavoor in Ernakulam district, Kerala. His early schooling was in the local school in Pulluvazhy and completed his Pre-University course at Nirmala College, Muvattupuzha. He then moved to Banaras Hindu University and after obtaining his B.Sc degree in Agricultural Science from there, he began his professional career as a telephone operator in the East German Consulate at Delhi. Later, he joined Central Planning Commission, Delhi as an economic investigator and worked there for five years. It was during this time that he started his literary career. In 1967, he joined the Hong Kong based Far Eastern Economic Review as the assistant editor. In 1970, he left Hong Kong and came to Bombay to serve as the Chief of publication with Commerce Group. He was also the Indian correspondent for McGraw-Hill World News and served as the editor for "Minerals and Metals Review".

He was also the CEO of Asian Industries Information Center and the editor of the Malayalam weekly 'Trial'.

He was married to Prabha Pillai who wrote two books named as Verpadinte Vedanakal and Ormakalude Mahanagarathil which recollect her memories of Narayan Pillai.

Narayana Pillai died on 19 May 1998 at his Borivli residence in Mumbai. He is survived by his wife Prabha and children Balakrishna Pillai & Madhavankutty Pillai.

An award, M P Narayana Pillai Memorial Short Story Award, has been instituted in his honour by Samakalika Malayalam Varika, a sister publication of The New Indian Express.

His most famous novel പരിണാമം was awarded the Kerala Sahitya Academy award in 1991. But he declined the honour and he is considered as one of the forerunners in Malayalam literature who paved the initial stones of Modern Malayalam short stories.

A must read for all malayali's all over the world. A malayali's life is not complete if he/she has not read books of M. P. Narayanapillai. I am scrampling for words to explain how I felt after reading the stories.

പരിണാമം എന്ന മികച്ച നോവൽ എഴുതിയ എം പി നാരായണപിള്ളയുടെ ചെറുകഥാ സമാഹാരം. സാമൂഹിക വിമർശനവും, ഹാസ്യവും, സർറിയലിസവും, മന്ത്രവാദവും യുക്തിവാദവും ജ്യോതിഷവുമെല്ലാം മുഖ്യ വിഷയങ്ങളായി വരുന്നു. പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കാത്ത രീതിയിൽ ഗതി മാറുന്ന കഥകൾ ഒട്ടേറേയുണ്ട്. കുറേ കഥകൾ മൊഴിയെടുപ്പ്, വാദം കേൾക്കൽ എന്ന ആഖ്യാനരീതിയിലൂടെയാണ് പുരോഗമിക്കുന്നത് (മൃഗാധിപത്യം, നായ, പെണ്ണുഡോക്ടർ പറഞ്ഞ കഥ). മനുഷ്യകേന്ദ്രീകൃത കാഴ്ചപ്പാടിൽ നിന്നു മാറി മറ്റു ജീവികളുടെ പക്ഷത്തുനിന്നുള്ള കഥകൾ, പല സ്ഥാപിത നിലപാടുകളേയും മാറ്റി ചിന്തിക്കുവാൻ പ്രേരിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.

ദൈവവിശ്വാസത്തിനു സമൂഹത്തിൽ ഉള്ള പ്രസക്തി, ഹാസ്യം കലർത്തി അവതരിപ്പിച്ച "ഞങ്ങൾ അസുരന്മാർ" ആണ് എറ്റവും ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടത്. സ്ത്രീ, വാർദ്ധക്യ കാഴ്ചപ്പാടുകളിൽ നിന്നുള്ള ശാപമോക്ഷം, നിരാശ എന്ന കഥകളും മികച്ചതാണ്. എന്നാൽ ചില കഥകൾ വായിച്ചിട്ട് ഉദ്ദേശമോ അർത്ഥമോ മനസ്സിലായില്ല. "പരിണാമം" വായിച്ചു ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട എല്ലാവർക്കും ഈ പുസ്തകം നിർദ്ദേശിക്കുന്നു.
