Haven Ranch #1

Midnight Madness

Rate this book
Midnight has always struggled to understand why his parents would leave him alone and defenseless in the woods as a newborn. Now a man insists he has the answers to what happened and a future planned for him beyond any reasonable man's dream. Walking into the room and seeing six of the largest sexiest beasts he had ever laid eyes on and another cutie in the corner, surprised and piqued Midnight's interest.

Discovering the body of the man Law had always looked at as the father he never knew was a rough day. Finding out that the man was not who he said he was, was even harder. Now he is told that the only way he can keep his home and help his people is if he mates with not only one of the sexy men sitting across from him but also a man he has fought and argued with since the day he arrived on the Refuge/Ranch.

Shaw didn't know what the hell fate was thinking asking him to mate with Law and a young man he had never laid eyes on before. He didn't know if he could do it. Even after being told that the fate of all shifters and paranormals depended on him doing just that.

Then shots are fired, and people are fighting for their very lives. Can Law, Shaw, and Midnight come together as fate has deemed or will the shifter world cease to exist?

For me, it was a 2.5 rounded up to 3 stars at first. Then upon finishing my review, I decided 2 was more accurate. That is with me taking into consideration the book's length, type, and purpose. (See the last part for my ratings philosophy etc...)

First and foremost, there was very little detailing and /or world building. Just a lot of stuff barely mentioned in passing.

I loved the concept and storyline. But to me, it just was not executed well. The flow was not smooth. The progressions at time felt very choppy. I never felt we got to know Shaw and Law as characters - no real background, growth, or depth. I never really connected with the 3 of them (including Midnight) as a triad. This of course, effects the sex scenes. Plus, some of the wording during those actually jerked me out of the scene. As much as I read, I found that somewhat surprising.

I was VERY frustrated with the forest scene, because we never got to see HOW it was resolved. Instead, we were given bits and pieces through Midnight's confused eyes - with no follow up or explanation afterwards either. So... we basically neither see what happens nor are we told.

The set up of the house was never really explained, so it made picturing some of those scenes hard to follow.

It wasn't really bad. It just could have been so much better in so many different areas. I didn't dislike it. I will go ahead and read the others since I bought them all together. I would not read them if or when I was in the mood for something other than fluffy, mindless, entertainment.

(If you continue to read below, I feel this story may be an "exception" to the dropping one star from my reviews.)

THINGS TO TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION WITH MY REVIEWS:
I basically read only m/m (like 250+ to 1 vs m/f). This is relevant because all ratings are in comparison to other m/m books. For those that read mainstream books from major publishers OR that are very particular, I would remove at least one star from my rating. I'm a very laid back reader who simply enjoys reading. I don't look for issues. I can miss things others may see. It typically has to both jump out at me and stay with me for me to make note of it.

As a rule, my ratings are also based on a book's purpose and in comparison to others of similar length or type. I don't feel having the same expectations for a quick read as a novel is a fair comparison nor comparing those whose purpose is to be purely entertaining "brain candy" (easy, formulaic, fun reads, often serials, by authors with a very high and quick rate of publishing.)

This is the first book in the Haven Ranch series. We meet the core crew of the pack. Midnight and Sky have been raised together. They are unaware of what awaits them. Then they meet Rey who is connected to them. Plus there are Law, Shaw, Dustin, Hardy, Winter, and Emry. Midnight discovers he is the mate to Law and Shaw. Now Midnight has to get to know these strangers, mate with them, and deal with the danger that is threatening Haven Ranch. All that to save the shifter and paranormal world. I love how Cree Storm created not only the Haven Ranch society, but the world and its beliefs and struggles. It's a totally different approach. I look forward to reading not only the other two books in this series but all the books written by this author. I'm so glad I won the first book in an event and was able to discover this author.

We have all read shifter books before, I mean come on some of us live for them. I have to say, this one is rather different. A breath of fresh air. Cree Storm paints a new story for the paranormal world, why they were made and such. I can see many stories being formed on Haven Ranch and its city.

I really enjoyed that we get to learn about the paranormal world along side Rey, Sky, and Nigh. We get to fall in love along with them too. I cannot wait to see what happens in the love stories of Rey and Sky. To find out who is out to get them and how!

Hot, suspenseful and interesting all in one place.

WOW! Great new take on shifters, with a cast of characters that you can totally relate to. Cree has fashioned a story that will keep you turning pages, and wishing there was more! Can not wait to see what happens next! Truly a great beginning to what looks to be an awesome series!

Pure and utter crack with utterly bonkers worldbuilding, but somewhat charming. Contains some of the absolute worst dirty talk I've ever seen in my life though:

"Look at our mate's beautiful star, Midnight. Watch as I circle his pucker with my finger. Do you see how his hole flexes and moves with the anticipation of my entry?"
