Book of the Day – Real-World Mindfulness for Beginners
Today’s Book of the Day is REAL-WORLD MINDFULNESS FOR BEGINNERS, written by Brenda Salgado in 2016 and published by Sonoma Press.

Brenda Salgado is an American writer, and expert in Meditation and Mindfulness, nonprofit management, movement building, women’s health, and environmental and social justice. She has degrees in Biology, Developmental Psychology, and Animal Behavior.

I have chosen this book because I just put it into a list of reference books about mindfulness in working environments.

This book is a small, effective, and enjoyable beginner’s manual to help people in a working environment discover mindfulness and its measurable real-world benefits.

In today’s fast-paced and demanding work environments, employees are increasingly facing the challenges of stress, burnout, and disengagement. Mindfulness, the practice of focusing on the present moment without judgment, has been scientifically proven as a powerful tool for enhancing holistic well-being, a sense of belonging, and even productivity in the workplace.

Mindfulness represents a simple, yet powerful tool to deal with stress and changes, as it gives to its practitioners resilience, calm, and clarity.

Salgado, in this book, has put a series of practices, tools, and exercises particularly dedicated to those completely new to mindfulness and experiencing trouble with coping with the sometimes overwhelming personal and professional life challenges.

In Real-World Mindfulness for Beginners, the readers will then find:

Simple, yet extremely effective mindfulness techniques that start working in just a few minutes or even seconds.
A list of the most common challenges readers can face, each with its dedicated chapter, with specific practices to deal with them.
A valuable contribution by 10 of the most renowned and trusted mindfulness teachers for dealing with strong emotions such as anxiety, stress, anger, grief and loss, and many more.
Of course, with such an approach some of the practices are quite similar but this does not negatively impact on my opinion of the book. Overall, I think that this is a good book for everyone who wants to learn the first steps of a longer journey into mindfulness or for those people who are facing hard times in their lives and are looking for quick, yet effective relief.

A good primer on bringing mindfulness to your life. Not so much something you read cover to cover (although you can), but more like a reference guide. Each (short) chapter focuses on a different topic, e.g. gratitude, patience, anger, grief, aging, etc., providing first an overview by a mindfulness teacher and then a handful of mindfulness exercises with step-by-step instructions. A very practical and compassionate beginner's guide on how to center yourself and bring serenity to your life when times are turbulent.

Uninspiring and unremarkable. This was part of the "Work it out" Humble Bundle and one I regret buying so far. Maybe someone who doesn't know what mindfulness is, but heard some things about it, might appreciate this collection.

Half a year ago I read a collection of stories about climate change, I can still remember some, probably even most of those stories, and not all of them were memorable. I have read this collection of mindfulness stories in less than a week and I can't remember a single of the eleven stories. Uninspiring and unremarkable.

This book is without a doubt, helpful. With that being said, I felt that it was very repetitive. Many of the ‘lessons’ offered in this book felt repeated as if they had been reused. I think many of these ideas could have been combined into a shorter and more straightforward book. Although, I still believe this book is a great coffee table book or bathroom book because it it great to read one lesson at a time but if you’re trying to read the whole thing in one sitting, you’ll probably feel like you’re reading the same 5 chapters on repeat.

My second book on mindfulness. This one had a variety of self-help, short exercises to do when feeling tension, stress, anger, etc. Lots of ideas. In my typical manner, I did not take time to try anything. Too busy to take the time. Duh!
I am glad there are books available to offer help--for those willing to admit they need help and willing to give the exercises a chance to work in them.

With all the uncertainty in the world today, I realized I needed a way to calm and control my thoughts. This is a very basic how-to which contains chapters written by multiple authors who teach mindfulness and share their knowledge on the topic. They cover things like focus, anger, grief & loss, aging & illness, as well as bad habits and behaviors. It is a quick read. I am thinking about purchasing a copy so I will be able to refer back to various chapters as needed.

Easily Understood

As a novice to mindfulness, this approach using selected chapter input from a variety of practitioners, which offered guidance and perspective in one place that would take a long time to explore via any other method.

I found this book extremely helpful for navigating techniques and exercises to practice mindfulness. It is true, this is for beginners, but that does not make it any less helpful for people that have practiced mindfulness for years. We can always find something new to help us and others.

Read more than half of the book, reading the rest would be a waste of time for me. I have never been a fan of mindfulness or the power of now. Just pausing for a bit and breathing a little is fine, but it's not an all-powerful tool for everything, at least not in my case.

This lovely, easy-to-read book offers a wonderful introduction to mindfulness practice, which I recommend for all sex workers.

One thing I’d give to every sex worker alive would be the gift of mindfulness. It wouldn’t alleviate poverty, resolve injustice, or wipe out whorephobia. But mindfulness surely does have a positive affect how we relate to problems as well as go a long ways towards making us feel at home in our own bodies and minds.

Mindfulness in sex work helps you to:

Learn to make friends with yourself, no matter what you feel or think.
This means getting more comfortable with uncomfortable emotions by cultivating distance between what you’re experiencing in the moment and your core sense of self. Self-regulation and objectivity is crucial in sex work, when we’re continually navigating negativity, threats, and rudeness. Just having that moment when we can pause and say—Hey -- I’m feeling really angry/hurt/scared right now, but I’m not going to let it overwhelm me – is vital to self-care and making good decisions.

Reduce stress-related physical ailments.
Science is finding that mindfulness and conscious breathing techniques can help relieve physical symptoms including insomnia, high blood pressure, anxiety attacks, headaches, and so much more. Mindfulness means listening to what our bodies are telling us, rather than shutting ourselves off -- so very important when our sexuality is our livelihood.

Know where your business ends and your clients’ begins.
Clients bring us all their sexual emotional baggage, including shame, rage, fear, low self-esteem, bigotry, guilt, and envy. Mindfulness offers tools to see their suffering clearly and to respond with compassion, while keeping ourselves centered and safe.

Real World Mindfulness for Beginners is a series of short easy-to-read-easy-to-understand teachings from a wide range of Buddhist and Western teachers including Kaira Jewel Lingo on cultivating gratitude and joy, and my dear friend, life coach Fresh White, on changing bad habits and negative behaviors. It’s one of those books that you can read cover to cover, or turn to any page and dive right in.

We spend so much of our lives worried about our beach bods and our bank accounts. Mindfulness deepens our sense of full-bodied wellbeing, which is the greatest wealth there is. It can be practiced anywhere, anytime, and it’s free.

To anyone who wants to learn more, I recommend keeping Real World Mindfulness for Beginners by your bedside and spending a few minutes with it every morning and night.

Real world mindfulness for beginners by Brenda Salgado is a great start for understanding what mindfulness is and why it's so important in our society today. It discusses how meditation plays A part in the practice of mindfulness and that mindfulness does not always mean peace and happiness. Full of many challenges activities and practices to incorporate in life such as mono tasking simplification, you're sure to find something useful. Many brilliant minds are featured which gave me fresh motivation and knowledge to strengthen my mindfulness and cope with things like grief and anger as well as promoting gratitude compassion and happiness. Some of my favorite sections are on the topic of writing as well as 10 steps to deepen your practice in the appendix. I would definitely recommend this quick but powerful read. I received a review copy of this book from the publisher.

It has some nice insights

The book had some nice tips. Especially the one about writing a # of thank yous to your father equal to his birthday.
I wrote 80 thank yous and sent it to my father on his 80th birthday.
It was a nice and new experience.

However, most of the book is meditation session of sitting down and imagining stuff, which i personally dont find effective.
Thats why the two stars.
