It was five years now since Shani had married Andreas Manou -- but the marriage had been in name only and she had not seen him since the wedding day. And now Shani was planning to marry again -- and Andreas had chosen this moment to come back into her life .. .

This lawyer of yours apparently believes an annulment will be simple. Did you tell him we were married in England?"

Shani's spirits began to sink, even while she obstinately refused to admit that Andreas had the power to keep her bound to him.

"He knows we were married in England, yes."

"And yet he believes he can obtain an annulment for you." Andreas shook his head. "Only I can annul the marriage -- you are not in a position to do so, whatever you, or this lawyer, might think to the contrary."

"You?" She stared at him. "But I'm the Injured party. I was forced Into marriage -- black-mailed!"

"Don't talk rubbish! You married me willingly. I'm the injured party! I've offered you a home and you've refused to live with me. In the eyes of the law I'm the one with the grievance; consequently it is only I who can annul the marriage."

Anne Hampson was born on 28 November 1928 in England. At age six she had two ambitions: to teach and to write. Poverty after WWI deprived her of an education and at 14 she was making Marks & Spencer's blouses at one shilling (5p) each.

She retired when she married. Later, when her marriage broke up, she was homeless with £40 in her purse. She went back to the rag trade and lived in a tiny caravan. But she never forgot her two ambitions, and when Manchester University decided to trial older women she applied, and three years later had achieved one ambition, so set her thoughts on number two.

In 1969, her first novel, Eternal Summer, was accepted five days from posting and she soon had a contract for 12 more. From the caravan she went to a small stately home, drove a Mercedes and sailed on the QE2. From the first book, came over 125 more written for Mills & Boon, Harlequin and Silhouette. Alan Boon (the Boon of Mills & Boon) and she came up with the title for 'Harlequin Presents' over lunch at the Ritz. She suggested to Alan that they have a historical series. He told her to write one - it was done in a month, entitled Eleanor and the Marquis under the pseudonym Jane Wilby. She has the distinction of being number one in Harlequin Presents, Masquerade and Silhouette. Many of "Presents" have been reprinted many times (some as many as 16) and are now fetching up to $55, being classed as "rare" books.

She has had 3 awards, one at the World Trade Centre where she received a standing ovation from her American fans, who had come from many states just to meet her.

She was retired, but in 2005 she wrote two romance and crime novels, both of which were published by Severn House.

She passed away on 25 September 2014. She has been written her autobiography, entitled Fate Was My Friend.

A vintage with a difference.
The H is neither mean, nor intolerant. He clearly fell in love with her at first sight but made the mistake of blackmailing the 18 yrs old h (he's 35) into marriage. She runs away, and they meet 5 yrs later in Cyprus where she’s a nurse and he, a senior surgeon. Apparently he knew where she was most of the time, but gave her time to live her life.

He is mostly patient and tolerant as he tries to woo her into giving their marriage a try/second chance. She is a nice normal character, and not unlikable. But she believes herself in love with the om- a resident RAF pilot and so pushes for an annulment.

Things come to a head and finally he gives up in disgust.
He was like a man who had fought, desperately yet honourably ... and lost.

I found the first part more gripping and enjoyable. Later the story meanders and is filled with lot of unnecessary fillers.

The local Greek-Cypriot flavor is amazing and for a change people and their simple lives seemed realistic rather than the touristy feel in the contemporaries where we get the zillionaire way of life with their islands, villas, yachts and larger than life lifestyles.

First of all, the heroine on this cover doesn't match the very young heroine that was described in the story, imo.

Secondly, the title? This is about an H who falls in love at first sight with the heroine and forces her to marry him. When she runs away before they can consummate their marriage, he decides to give her a chance to grow up before pursuing her. When they do meet again, five years later she's a nurse working in Cyprus and he's the new surgeon at the hospital. So waves of fire? Maybe it's supposed to evoke the intermittent passion that springs up between them?

And intermittent is the way to describe this story. I could have done with less of the OM and the wanna be OW and more of the H/h in situations where the dramatic irony of their real relationship could be shown.

I did enjoy the travelogue, however. The scene where they read the ancient tablets that are notes of gratitude to the healers was surprisingly moving and appropriate for a doctor and nurse.

I had to take off a star for this plot point:

I did like the hero with his unrequited love and his mad dancing skills very much. The heroine should have cut it off with OM as soon as she saw what a temper he had, but she was pretty clueless about men.

"Waves of fire" is the story of Andreas and Shani, and is a second chance oldie.
Now let me summarize what the issue with the book is
What Andreas does
-Falls in love with Shani instantly
-Respects her choice to wait for consummation
-Gives her time to grow up even when she runs away
-Begs for her to give their marriage a chance and grow up
What Shani does
-Runs away without giving her marriage a thought
-Doesn't contact her husband despite knowing his worry
-Cheats on him with a shameless flirt Brian- even when he wants to reconcile.
-Pines for om, actually crying when he is with his ex
I felt SO BAD for Andreas. He cries, pleads, and goes into grief asking the exasperating h to give their marriage a try- but she is sooo immature. There's a point where the h starts having feelings for the H- but still doesn't tell the OM.
There is a lot of back and forth drama in the last 1/2 involving the couple and OM as well as OW Lydia- and the suddenly heroine pines after the H, but .
That being said, the couple gets over their trauma in blink of an eye, book over, no epilogue.
BLEH
Safe with MAJOR exceptions
2/5

Long story short she is in love with boss but boss is engaged to another and so she goes off an vacation to Africa to get over it and try to move on. Major problem here is that she wants to keep her job and thinks she loves him all thought out the book almost. The scene by the water made it worth the read for me. It was not about sex but he said a lot with just a look and I also liked that he did have another girl in the background but he never made out like she was his lover or that they had a relationship. He loves her and tell her he wants to marry her almost right away and he was so eaten by jealousy it was obvious. Get a clue girl. Would have loved some lovemaking here.
On another note it's cute how they refer to kissing and touching as lovemaking. Ah simpler times.

3 Stars This was a rather long novel and I felt the author sometimes rambled on to the extent that I began skipping pages. She constantly referred to the hero as the Greek or the pagan! He was painted almost throughout the entire book as a monster and then at the end the heroine falls in love with him rather easily.
The references to the ancient Greek sites and stories behind them were very interesting but at times went on for many pages at a time and not relevant to the story.
This is an older HP , and you can really tell !
The author did make it interesting enough for me to keep reading and want to know what would happen and how it would all end.

Both Preeti and StMargarets have reviews that pretty much say how I felt about this book, but I graded it only 2 *'s. I'm not sure why since I agree with those reviews, but somehow this book made me very uncomfortable.

A second chance story from 1971. The h was blackmailed into marrying the H when she was 18 and he was 35. At first sight he wanted to marry her (🙄). She fled before the marriage was consummated.

They have one night together in the entire book. But the writer doesn’t write about it, so it was a bit of a guess at first if they had indeed made love. Suddenly after that night she is in love with him.

It was lame and tame and the ending was weird. The first part was better than the second part and I just skimmed a lot of pages in the second part.

This is a lovely marriage of convenience reunion story. At eighteen Shani was very young and when Andreas blackmailed her into marriage to save her father's reputation, she fled.

Five years later he finds her in Cyprus, preparing to ask for an annulment to marry an English soldier stationed on the island.

Andreas wants her back but Shani, believing it to be merely a possessive streak and his feelings for her only desire, resists.

Shani takes a while to grow up, but Andreas is a lovely hero. It had an emotional ending but very satisfying.

I love books that are able to stir an emotion but that was rather short-lived.This book had much more potential since the plot was near perfect but the author should have lengthen on the Shani-andreas relationship.i dunno but i feel like it lacked something(reason for my 4*)
Still a book to re-read

2.5 stars. The story had potential. It has some of my fav tropes: estranged couple reuniting, workplace romance, but it failed to build on its strengths. Skipped a lot of scenes. One of AH's weakest books I'd say.

Waves of Fire was about nurse Shani Reeves and Dr. Andreas Manou. When she was only 18, Shani was forced into agreeing to marry Andreas in order to protect her father. However, on their wedding night. she fled in fear, not wanting to be married to him.
Five years later, still married, Shani believed herself to be in love with another man, though she had not yet informed him that she was already married. Upon revealing this to him, he became angry until she calmed him down by saying she would seek an annulment as the marriage had never been consummated.
Unknown to her, Andreas, had fallen in love with her at first sight; however, he had gone about winning her the wrong way. After she fled from him on their honeymoon, he knew he had to do something drastic. He had realized, being 17 years older than her, that she needed time to grow up and mature before she could be able to accept being married to him. Having only been ignorant of her whereabouts for a short time, he had finally decided it was time to seek her out, at which time he had hoped to gently woo her into falling in love with him. But upon seeing her again for the first time in five years, he was stunned to hear her say she wanted an annulment.
This was your typical old-school Harlequin Presents romance novel where the male was arrogant, controlling, always dominating the woman he supposedly loved by any means necessary to gain the outcome he wanted, regardless of how she felt. Andreas had no problem using another woman to try to make Shani jealous, hurting her in the process. That's not love...that's arrogance and domination.
There was no real chemistry or passion between the two main characters. The entire story was full of hatred, animosity, angst, and drama. That he pretty much forced her to surrender near the end made for a very bad HEA. It was stories like this that caused me to stop reading Harlequin books for many years. Making others suffer to gain your own way is not romance, and this was a poor example of love. It definitely did not earn a five-star rating.

Ugh, what is wrong with her? The heroine, that is but quite frankly, I’m starting to think AH is not for me. There was nothing romantic about an infuriating, self-pitying heroine & a Greek hero that turned out to be anything but one. The OM has all the rights to be angry with her when she finally confessed her marital status, but of course, the oh, so righteous heroine demands everyone’s pity & sympathy because poor her, she was a victim; therefore Brian should be more understanding of her situation. Oh, really?
Soon after she witnessed OM dining with another woman but the now heartbroken heroine has little to no will so instead of telling OM to go kick rocks, she fell right back with him when he groveled to take her out for dinner or whatever. Woman was so used & confused! Seriously, does AH not realize that certain line of work is only tolerable when done by hero & not of the OM. Heroine was too useless, which was why she didn’t come off as pitiful but rather hard to cared for. Up to this point, hero was barely included or mindful of the plot, too… DNF, that’s for sure.
Fun fact: The word “desire” was used so many times & like back to back, too.

I couldn’t get past the vampire vibe that I got by looking at the cover picture of the hero as he stares at the h’s neck. Then later when he wants to consummate this marriage to a girl who is half his age and who is sadder than sad, he promises her that she will never ever leave him after that night, the vibe was reinforced.

But this youngster insisted on marrying him in order to “save her father“. But then she flees. They meet up again in five years when she still half his age but not more mature in the handling of her life. I’ll come back to this book later when I have a bit more patience.

Hated this so-called hero. He blackmailed the FMC into marriage when she was far too young and immature for it. The text is purposefully vague as to whether he forced the consummation also, but my money's on it given that he was adamant he wouldn't give her an annulment. The OM was trash, but the too-old-for-her control freak MMC was certainly no prize.

although i enjoyed this book. to me there wasnt really much between them, the story focuses mainly on the hero and heroine with other people maybe 20 pages out of the whole book was based on them and them speaking or being together. then BAM at the end there all of a sudden together. dont get me wrong it was a great book an a great read between a couple who were forced into a marrige anf then 5 years later have crossed paths again, i wanted to see more fighting for one another more love and passion beteween them.

however it was good to see a heroine with some backbone instead of one who jumps when the hero says how high, and to see a hero actually fight for what he wants from the start.
