Impact is the sequel to Collision (Colliding Worlds).
When two worlds collide, landscapes are swapped and a portal explodes into the unknown. Officer Mark Janos of the NYPD finds himself stranded on a parallel world full of hostile creatures. He rallies survivors together, but where can he lead them? There's no way to escape.
This is the second novella in the trilogy of novellas making up "Maelstrom," a look at what happens when parallel universes collide and the worlds start swapping their history. In this installment, a police officer experiences some type of explosion while on patrol, and meeting up with a paramedic who was jogging, they discover that their New York is now a New York with prehistoric beasts roaming about causing chaos. Together, they start to unravel a mystery that reveals that there are many alternative worlds that have come into contact, sharing history, and unfortunately, spelling out ultimate annihilation unless the worlds can be untangled and isolated. Again, Cawdron has created compelling characters with circumstances that bring out their best. A second installment that sets up the final novella, in which we learn that not everything happens for a reason. But we still have to deal with it.
This is the second of the Colliding Worlds series. I liked this a bit better - it was longer with more character development. I could also make some sense of things knowing the background.
Impact takes the phenomenon from Colliding and tells a story from the perspective of people who have entered the "rift". People living in New York find themselves on another Earth that still has the wildlife of pre-ice age America.
There isn't anything wrong with the story, in terms of the writing. It's just that, well, it isn't very interesting. There are plenty of stories about people trying to survive in a prehistoric/alien world, and this story doesn't really offer anything new. Big creatures and trying to survive.
I was really hoping that the "rift" was going to be explored more, since this is the second short story in the series. Or at least another fun example of how the "colliding worlds" offers our Earth something unexplainable. But instead, the story is very mundane and forgettable.
If you liked Colliding, don't feel obligated to read this one too. If a third story follows, maybe it will pick up the right thread. Otherwise, I'll just keep waiting for the movie.
Cawdron is just pure genius when it comes to writing this style of story. This is a powerful character driven story about a Police Officer that is caught in some sort of temporal disturbance, and as a result, he finds himself in a parallel universe. I don’t want to give away too much, you have to read this and enjoy the sheer experience of this Cawdron Masterpiece for yourself. But it really is an experience as you, the reader, are calmly reading about this Police Officer, going through his daily duties, when he is suddenly, inexplicably, thrust into this other reality. And from here, you really have to hold on, as the characters are dragged through an incredible journey that you will have to read to believe. Mark, our Police Officer, is in for the fight of his life as he tries to work out what has happened, where he is, and tries to save the others that he is with, and, most importantly, tries to find a way home for all of them. All of this with some truly incredible creatures and experiences that ‘Impact’ on him and those with him in ways that will leave you unable to put this down. It's just as well this is a short story, otherwise you might lose an entire nights sleep. As usual, Cawdron writes exceptional Characters that you immediately feel a connection to. We are drawn into their fight for survival, Cawdron really makes you feel like you are there with them, the tension, uncertainty, and the fear they feel. He also brings out the comradery and compassion in his Characters as well though, giving us a true understanding of what it is to be ‘human’. It's these Characters and the attachment that you feel to them that really makes this a gripping tale. Cawdron again does a fantastic job of generating strong emotive responses, leading to a really clever and stunning ending. This is a Sci-Fi story of survival in a world that has been turned inside out, but it is also a real look at the deeper emotions that drive some people, the altruistic urges that have meant that humanity has survived for so long. Impact will leave you in awe of Cawdron’s continued ability to write such outstanding Character driven stories and with such brilliant and exciting plots. Don’t miss this!
Another shockingly excellent tale from Peter Cawdron, whose quality standards seem to somehow ignore his immense output! I believe this is his fifth release this year, not counting short story compilations.
So, back to the story -> Impact is the sequel to Collision, part of the Colliding Worlds Series which is being created for a future movie/ tv release. I don't know about you folks, but I can't wait!
No spoilers here......What we have here is possibly the most exciting, fast 'n' furious science fiction triller that I have had the privilege to read. Even better, 'tis really cool to be just at the beginning of this great adventure, where alternative worlds messing up the grand scheme of things.
"Neighbourhood's gone to hell." Central Park, New York. A man, a horse, a jogger. Then a flash of light - and everything has changed. Peter Cawdron's succinct prose style is almost poetic, painting vivid pictures with a paucity of words. His two main protagonists are there before us, breathing, bleeding, real people trying to stay alive. Even the few secondary players have depth as they, too, have to face up to the terrors of the unbelievable unknown. All in this short novella. Unmissable - for everyone
Peter Cawdron's newest book Impact is fantastic. It grabs you right from the start. After a collision with an alternate New York... Mark finds himself trying to save a handful of survivors, from prehistoric beasts...
Book 2 is just absolutely exciting and FUN to read. I do hope there will be Book 3, 4 etc. And yes they would make a great TV series. Peter Cawdron has become one of my favorite authors.
I've just come across this author and glad. Enough science to make a plausible premise and great imagination fills in the rest. Great characters and human interaction. Highly recommend.
It was an okay sequel, but not the greatest. I would rather it had been something that followed the lines of the first part. Try it, don't try it. I don't think it will make a big difference either way.
Another excellent story from Cawdron, who has rapidly become one of my favorite authors. I can't wait to see how this story blends with the first episode as the series continues.
