This has been a really unpleasant reading experience for me. I really cannot find words to express my frustration at the characters in this book. Especially, the hero is so very annoying!
Fin (Finlay), sounds like a 6-year old boy, praying for the love of his daddy and he does every stupid thing to be loved by him. He goes to the school he wants, he chooses the job his father wants for him and he says yes to the woman his father arranges for him. He is such a pathetic character. And when he has done all his father wants and he still is not appreciated, he is so very upset. Oh boy, he is the most annoying hero I have read lately. Such a whining guy!
***********************************************
Fin is a lawyer coming from a rich but heartless family. At the beginning of the book, he is left at the altar by his fiancé that his family has chosen. She has fallen in love with someone else and being best friends with him wasn’t good enough reason for her to talk about it before the wedding so she made him wait there for 45 minutes like an idiot. Then, our hero, being the pathetic guy he is, forgives her immediately all because they are best friends.
Then, he goes and falls for a girl with pink hair and tattoos: Star. She works in a coffee shop and she is also a photographer. Some of her photos have been sold and Fin was one of her admirers. But still, she is a quirky girl when compared to the one his family has chosen for their son. So imagine their reaction when they see her.
Can he defend her the way she deserves when her parent strike her with their evil words? No, of course not!!! Such a wuss!
***********************************************
Fin mistreats Star not once, not twice but many more times than that. Then, he comes and apologizes, saying he f*cked up again. (Yes, he really does.) And she forgives him all the time.
Star already has concerns about them being fit for each other and his unbalanced character doesn’t help.
Only when Star witnesses how shell-shocked he is in front of his parents, unable to defend her and their relationship, it becomes the last straw for her and she closes herself to his apologies afterwards.
***********************************************
After that disappointment about the way Fin reacted to his parents, there are many miscommunications and lack of communication, so they fall apart for a while. It is really frustrating to watch two grown-up people fail to communicate.
***********************************************
Unfortunately, my problem with this book is not only about the annoying hero. The book also drags in many ways. It is boring as hell.
I was never able to connect with the characters. I couldn’t connect with the hero because he was weak and not trustworthy and I couldn’t connect with the heroine because she forgave him all the time too easily.
Their chemistry was zero, the intimate scenes are written in a dull way, all of them being the same as the one before: "kiss, get naked, enter, come." No passion whatsoever!
Ugh, everything about this book was so boring for me.
***********************************************
I see so many 4 or 5-star reviews, so maybe it is me, not the book so you can still give it a try. Maybe, the writer intended to create a hero mistreated by his parents so that we pity him and love him. Therefore, maybe you will love him. Who knows?
I didn't. I couldn't. I was yelling at him all the time, saying, "Come on, man up! You are not a child but a grown-ass man."
Did he man-up in the end? Well, yes.. finally! It was just a little bit too late for me.

Writing:
Dual point of view. Dragging. Doesn’t make me feel.

No cheating. No OW/OM drama.

P.S. In the past, I attended a photography course for two years and it is still one of my hobbies. The first thing we learn in a photography course is to call it “a photograph” and never “a picture”. If it is art, then it is “photography” and “a photograph”. So I wish the writer was also aware of and sensitive to this fact.

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.
Wow. This book blew me away and I'm struggling to think of what to write as a way of expressing how much I loved reading about Star and Finlay. This book was one which I think will stick with me for a while due to it's easy to follow story, a quirky but amazing woman and then a sexy but shy gentleman. The Scottish setting was unusual and I enjoyed seeing Edinburgh from a different perspective. Lisa has a way of placing you into the story and making it seem that you were there and watching the story unfold before your eyes. This book had everything I look for: drama, romance, a sexy guy, a wonderful woman, hidden talents and a bit of shyness. Star is an American who had her heart set on Europe but fell for Edinburgh. She is a lady who likes to stand-out, and yet doesn't want people to know her secret. Star is a determined to keep her secret just that, but she never seems to want to have more than she has. This to me is completely refreshing and demonstrates how much of a strong lady she is. But when she meets Fin? Wow! I loved them together and my heart broke when people interfered in their relationship. They work together and I adored reading about Star and her life. Her best friend and boss, Alec, is amazing and is that gay friend everyone wishes they have! Finlay, or Fin, is a man who has tried his hardest to conform to his parents whims to prove how much he loves them. But as you read, he'd literally do anything. So what happens when things don't go to plan? You get fired. When Fin's father fired him, I gasped because I couldn't believe it happened. But like a phoenix, Fin rose from the ashes and is doing something he always wanted to do. And he is amazing at it! This made me smile, because everyone should do something they love. Fin is the sort of man we all want. He's loyal, sexy, determined, but shy and sweet at the same time. I wanted to slap him after the first night with Star, but he more than makes up for it. My heart broke when his family life was revealed, but I was so glad that he had someone in his life who helped him be himself.
This is a must read about a Scottish man and an American woman! What could be better?
Duplicity has got to be one of the funniest reads by Lisa J Hobman to date. Despite its tough topics within, the journey of Fin and Star is one of pure passion, acceptance and individuality. And what a journey it is!
The start of the story was so refreshing....being hilted and subsequently frowned upon by those closest to him, he fears what the future holds for him. With no family, no job, the home...what does he have?
Fate brings Fin and Star together, and share mor win common than we can imagine, despite being so outwardly different. Fin being quite happy to seep into the background, never being one for being showy, or the centre of attention. Star on the other hand, with her American style and attitude seems much more confident....but underneath the bravado, they both share so many similarities it's uncanny. What they both bring out in one another is their honesty and their ability to accept change and face adversity head on. And for that, I adored these characters beyond words. The underlying themes in this story just really got under my skin.
Excerpt I decided I wanted to have my own identity. I didn’t want to be a carbon copy of anyone else. I added my own personality to whatever I wore, and some kids at school either ignored me or made fun of me for not being “normal” —but what’s normal, right? And why strive to be anything other than your true self?
Fins love for music and finding his place in his world, rather than that of his parents, opened many doors for him....all the while, having Star by his side....his very on beacon in the dark.
Excerpt Although they were someone else’s words, they really spoke to me, liberating me from what had been a straitjacket of other people’s control for so long. I didn’t have to be what they wanted. I didn’t have to see things how they did. I was my own person. I was in charge of my own destiny.
There was bumps along the way for this pair, but for me it was so much more about the messages underneath the storyline that made this book for me. Telling each and every reader to not be afraid of accepting who you are and loving yourself. It truly was a brilliant story and took me right back to my roots of my love for this lovey Scottish author.
Excerpt She truly was an enigma. This tattooed, pink-haired American with a heart as big as the world...embrace your individuality, don’t shy away from it.
I am a huge fan of this author and couldn't wait to see what her brilliant mind would produce in this story. She didn't disappoint.
This is not your usual run of the mill boy meets girl, they fall in love, and live happily ever after story. This is a grab you by your collar and won't let you go till the end kind of story. There are so many ups and downs thought that I seriously doubted the ability of the main characters to get their act together.
Fin is an extremely well written character. He has flaws, which are obvious from the outset, but these simply made him far more endearing than he may have been without them. He has serious family issues which he does not deal with well. But on the flip side he has an amazing voice which has to be shared, not hidden away inside. Oh, and he's Scottish so that makes him instantly attractive to me!
Star is an American lass living in her dream city of Edinburgh. She hasn't got a lot, but she has loving parents and good friends looking out for her. She fantasises about a customer who buys coffee where she works, and it was pretty obvious exactly who that customer was going to turn out to be. Their first meeting is interesting to say the least. What follows is a tumultuous time for both of them. But that's what makes a story interesting, isn't it?
There is so much humour throughout, as well as some not so funny moments. I loved the characters, but especially Alec. He is the kind of friend every girl should have looking out for them, and the scene reminiscent of Pretty Woman is very well done.
A great story, written extremely well and further proof of the talent the author has. Bring on the next one!
This was a very interesting and unique book. It's not one that I would normally pick up but I did enjoy the story. Fin and Star come from two opposite lifestyles. Star was so carefree and independent. She didn't have a care in the world as to what other people thought about her until she met Fin. I enjoyed Star. She's the kind of person we all wish we could be, though she has her low points at times, she's not afraid to step out of the "normal" and be herself. Fin was just a man trying to please his father and get his love and affection. He was willing to do whatever it took, even to go as far as marry someone he didn't love. I very much felt for him as he tried to find his way in the world. He made a lot of mistakes and had to figure out ways to fix the big ones, but he was willing to step out of his comfort zone to do that. I absolutely despised his parents. The things they did and then claimed to be doing them out of love, or just putting the blame back on Fin was horrible! No one should have to go through abuse like that! In the end I'm glad that Fin and Star got their HEA. They deserved it!
You will understand the importance of the fact that I feel Jekyll and Hyde about this novel when you read it.
It started out extremely well and then it had a long stretch where I was wondering if I would finish it.
I found myself skimming some pages around the middle but against my expectations, I found back to the story and it DID finally make it to a 4 Star level.
Surprising
If you can work with a slower pace during a good part of a novel and you like the plot from its blurb I feel pretty confident that you will like the book, as character development and plot are solid.
Description: Hunter & Star Mendoza are complete opposites & come from two different lifestyles. Finn Hunter works for his fathers law firm as this is the path that was set out for him. However, his true passion is singing. He is loyal, shy & sweet, gorgeous, & flawed. Star is an young american girl living in her dream city of Edinburgh, Scotland. As she works at her best friends coffee shop, but her true passion is photography. Although, she is very talented she doubts her abilities. She is quirky, has pink hair at the moment, tattoos & is a beautiful person inside & out. This is a love story that is full of passion, stormy & intense moments, with a bit of humour. With compelling character's that are realistic with real emotions and flaws. As the story takes place in Edinburgh we learn a little about the place which adds to the story. The premise of the novel was capto baton & did not disappoint. I volunteerly reviewed an advanced reading copy of this book.
* I voluntarily read an ARC and this is my honest review*
Finn and Star are both on different paths but their paths seem to cross each other all the time. Finn is trying to win his families approval but somewhere along the way he lost himself in his family’s expectations. Star is on her own path with her pictures and working in a place she loves. Star thinks they are too different but Finn sees them as a match in more ways than one. Their attraction heats up the pages and it a great story of two people who live in different worlds when their lives collide. Liked the story and the characters because it gave you real life issues that we today still live through.
This is a great story that truly shows it's what's on the inside of a person that counts. Two people who, on the outside, couldn't look more different are actually meant to be. The story reminds you of the saying about not judging a book by its cover. Star and Fin are perfect together! I loved Star's friend and roommate, Alec as well and would love to see more of that character. *I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. This is my honest review.*
Duplicity is the first book I have read by Lisa and I loved it. Who says opposites don't attract. Fin and Star are pushed out of their comfort zones. I adored Fin and Star. I can't wait to read more of Lisa's work.
Heartache, Life Changing, Disowned, Second Chances, Romance
I don't think I've ever finished a book as fast. I've loved Star and Fin's story. So many ups and downs in their story. I recommend this to absolutely anyone. Love Lisa's writing. Thank you
What a fab read!!! As my first book ive read by this author i can say it wont be my last read as i really enjoyed this story. So this book tells us the journey of Scottish lawyer Fin who's aim in life is to make his family proud and to love him... but all that goes wrong when he realises just whatever he does just wont be good enough. Along comes American photographer Star who could not be any more different to Fin if she tried.... covered in tattoos and with pink hair and him with his suits and corporate world it shows opposites really do attract. Not your average romance story where they just meet and it all comes together smoothly these pair have a long journey to prove their love to each other. Having this book set in Edinburgh was fab aswell as being from there too i could more than imagine i could actually see in my head where they were talking about throughout the story. Fab read that was well written.
The plot promised a lot but the story was one more of a romance new adult book, the characters had potential but they were very flat characters. I had this book pending for a long time and I expected a little more of the story, I think the problem was that the book was very cliche and there was nothing that I have not read before. The end was very hasty and the fight was a simple communication problem that is what I hate most in the plots.
I love all of Lisa Hobman’s books and this is no different. You cannot help but fall in love with both Star and Fin. Fin has a lot to work through, but with Star’s influence can he find his own direction in the world. This is a really good read, I can’t wait to see what comes next from this author.
This book was not a typical romance. I adored Star and Fin and loved how opposite and yet how similar they really were! This story took not judging a book by its cover to an entirely different level! It also reminds the reader that not all family is good for you and sometimes your real family isn't even related. So glad I read this.. enjoyed every word!
I really wanted to like this book as I normally really like this author’s writing but I just couldn’t.
I found it overly dramatic, soppy, repetitive, predictable and boring.
I lost interest when the characters ‘realized’ they were falling for each other for what felt like the millionth time, and just could not get back into it.
Interesting story of two people who discover that despite appearances you can't help who you love. There is a huge misunderstanding but the HEA is satisfying, only wish we knew more about what happened with Fin's career choices and Star's roommate Alec
Fantastic read as if Lisa could write any different! I just wanted to hug fin and show him the love a parent should give their child and then I wanted to......him not be his parent! Be aware reading this may make your house messy! I couldn't put it down xx
I found it all a bit too shallow, neither main character had faith in the other, or themselves or the relationship, they needed to actually listen to one another. I didn't really like the H and so had no understanding of what she saw in him. Not a challenging read.
Lisa Hobman is a new author to me and this is her first book that I’ve read and it certainly won’t be my last. Lisa Hobmans writing style is wonderful and I felt drawn to the characters because of this.
Duplicity is the story of Fin and Star, two complete opposites that are drawn together and they bring the best out in each other. They encourage each other to follow their dreams.
I absolutely adored Fin and Star and it didn’t take me long to read it. I couldn’t put it down. I will definitely recommend this to people and I can’t wait to delve into more of this authors books.
I cannot express how much I LOVED reading Duplicity. The author writes the story so well it's almost like you are sat next to the characters themselves. You really felt for Fin with his parents but kinda glad he grew a pair eventually. Absolutely loved Star could relate in some ways being different from others. I would totally recommend giving this a read and see how well the author brings life to her books.
Fin is a lawyer who has always taken the path that his parents had chosen for him so that he could hopefully one day win their approval. When he once again is blamed for something out of his control, he loses it and decides to start to follow his dreams. Star moved to Edinburgh after falling in love with the town by reading books as a child. Always marching to the beat of her own drum, she works in a coffee shop, changes her hair color at least once a year, and has an abundance of tattoos. She's always been drawn to the quiet, shy man who comes into the coffee shop every morning but after seeing him perform karaoke at the bar one night, she takes the chance to talk to him. Can these two opposite people work out their differences?
I really like Fin and in the beginning of the story I was a huge fan of Star. But as the story progressed, she got more and more insecure and nothing anyone seemed to say helped her bounce back to the strong person she was at the beginning of the story. There were also parts of this story that were a little slow and I found myself skimming. I loved Alex and the other side characters in this story. Overall, I would give this story 3.5 Stars.
This is my voluntary review of a copy of this book.
Duplicity is about a lawyer (Fin), who has always wanted his mother and fathers approval and love, and an American woman (Star), who works in a local coffee shop. The story takes place in Edinburgh, which I really enjoyed reading about the area and sites these two visited and experienced together. I think what I ready didn't care for was how wishy washy these two characters were in their feelings of accomplishments with their passions, and who they were. I totally get how Fin's upbringing affected him, but after awhile it got to be too much with his hang ups that had to do with his father, especially after his father fired him from the firm because the arranged marriage didn't work out. The story could have been reduced by 50-100 pages if some of the s situations didn't carry on what seemed like forever. He's an attorney for god sake, the way he carried on in parts just got old. Star seemed to be secure with herself until all of a sudden she wasn't, which threw me off at first. I think the story could have read so much better if the continual doubting was taken out. To infer is one thing, but to continually harp on it is completely another. I for one would have written off Fin's parents years ago if I had been treated the way they did with Fin, no two ways about it. Loved the Hydde gang, and Hetty sounded adorable and what one would want to have in a mom. Alec was funny and fit perfectly in with the story.
Overall a solid 3.5 stars. I voluntarily reviewed an a copy of this book.
Read and reviewed on behalf of 2 girls who love books blog.
I loved this book!!! It’s just one of those books that when you finish it you don’t want it to be over. I can’t put my finger on the exact thing I loved about it because I just loved it all! I loved the setting for the book, I loved the characters and I loved the way in which the author wrote about the scenery made me feel like I was right there in the story with them. It was beautifully detailed and very well written. One of the things that made this a 5 star read for me was that I couldn’t predict what was going to happen with this storyline and I liked that the characters had their own vulnerabilities and for me that made them really relatable. This is the first book that I have read by this author but it will definitely not be the last – I’m definitely going to be adding more of her books to my TBR list.
I definitely recommend this book for anybody who likes a book with a plot that keeps you guessing, relatable characters and a story set in a place with beautiful scenery. Duplicity is a definite 5 star read for me! This is a standalone novel!
A beautiful story of opposites attracting.... I love this story!!
When finishing this story there was only the top rating I could give it. A five star book for me has to have me experiencing very emotion going and Duplicity did this in bucket loads. Fin and Star's story is passionate, stormy and intense I've totally fallen in love with this couple. I've gasped, melted in a puddle, cried and got very hot under the collar reading their story and that was just in the first few chapters and believe me it continued all the way through the book with a even greater intensity. Such was the grip this book had on me I can not remember the last book that made me want to throat punch characters, I'm not talking about Fin and Star either they were just beautiful, you will understand who when you read this book. I throughly recommend this book to any avid reader of passionate and romantic stories you will love this completely just as I have. Thank you Lisa J Hobman for another amazing story!!! I'm forever a fan xx
