Sean McGrath's travelogue on Manila is a revelatory account of the local night life. Heading out into the sprawling city at night through the chaotic traffic, he ventures into the red-light district, the neon-lit strip of go-go bars on P. Bourgos St. The door-girls and pumping music lure him into a raucous club. He is a keen observer of the entertainment strip, the bar girls and ladyboys, trawling some of the themed bars and cabaret shows. With engaging detail, he draws the reader into the seamy world of the street life there.

A few days later, while eating lunch at a Fifties diner, an earthquake disrupts his meal, caused by the explosion of Mt Pinatubo, the second largest volcanic eruption of the 20th century. The mountain rumbles, spewing out a column of ash that darkens the day. In the aftermath, McGrath joins the response effort to the areas affected by the eruption, accompanying a Red Cross convoy delivering relief supplies. Along the way, he witnesses the extent of the devastation, the roofs collapsed from the wet ash, the fallen trees, the buried buildings. Arriving at an evacuation center, he describes a moving encounter with the Aetas, an indigenous tribe who live on the slopes of the volcano.
