Rate this book
Afghanistan, My Tears is a compelling true story of David and Julie Leatherberry's deep love for the people of Afghanistan. Though danger and chaos were their constant companions, neither could keep this couple from answering God's summons to give their lives in service to the Afghans.

They were there during the Saur Revolution in 1978 and the Soviet invasion in 1979. For many years David and Julie had the privilege of living among the Afghans.

I've read quite a few books in this sort of genre, but I sensed there was something different about this one from its very first pages. There is something so pure and genuine about this couple and their "work" among the afghans that attracts me. This book is packed with what I would call "mini miracles" that truly helped strengthen my faith in the God who intervenes in everyday life. As I put this book back on my shelf, I feel encouraged to begin depending on God in the small areas. My heart for Central Eurasia may make me biased, but I recommend this to anyone with a call to live and serve cross-culturally.

The author D.L. is a dear friend of mine, we worked for years together in this land of tears and for these precious people. D.L. pours out his heart and his love for the Afghans not only in his writing, but much More in his actions and life. It is God‘s love for the Afghan people that motivates hin. Once you read that book you cannot but being deeply touched in your heart and spirit.

This book enlightened my understanding of missionaries Julie and David Leatherberry and their mission to Muslims in Afghanistan and neighboring countries. Their love for those to whom they ministered is exceptional. The book follows the early journeys of the couple as they learned the language of the land and shared their Christian faith. They worked with world relief organizations to meet needs of adults and children in refugee camps.

The intrigue of the book is beyond our comprehension. We have not had such experiences or met such resistance to the Christian faith in America, though we may yet face the same. It is an informative account of how God’s presence and power rise above evil’s intention.

The author, who faithfully and carefully follows the leading of God, and longs for us to see the heart of the common Muslim instead of judging them by the actions of a small percentage of the people.

Leatherberry’s next book, will soon be available. I was a Beta reader of that one and it is amazingly descriptive of the land, of the people, and of his special Muslim friend.

A beautiful and simple account of one couple's true compassion for the people of Afghanistan and the good they were able to accomplish by following the leading of the Holy Spirit. I was so impressed by David Leatherberry's unrelenting persistence in trying to get back to Afghanistan and the Afghan friends he loved so much after foreigners were forced to leave in the early 80's. What a shining example of how much faith alone can accomplish.

I have read this book multiple times and have loved it more every time I have. It is so encouraging to see the faith of someone willing to risk it all to share the love of Christ! I long to someday go and serve the Afghan people myself, and It means so much to read the story of those who have gone before!
