Chris Claremont is a writer of American comic books, best known for his 16-year (1975-1991) stint on Uncanny X-Men, during which the series became one of the comic book industry's most successful properties.

Claremont has written many stories for other publishers including the Star Trek Debt of Honor graphic novel, his creator-owned Sovereign Seven for DC Comics and Aliens vs Predator for Dark Horse Comics. He also wrote a few issues of the series WildC.A.T.s (volume 1, issues #10-13) at Image Comics, which introduced his creator-owned character, Huntsman.

Outside of comics, Claremont co-wrote the Chronicles of the Shadow War trilogy, Shadow Moon (1995), Shadow Dawn (1996), and Shadow Star (1999), with George Lucas. This trilogy continues the story of Elora Danan from the movie Willow. In the 1980s, he also wrote a science fiction trilogy about female starship pilot Nicole Shea, consisting of First Flight (1987), Grounded! (1991), and Sundowner (1994). Claremont was also a contributor to the Wild Cards anthology series.

the candid conversation was so much fun to read - the bts of it all fascinates me - but, undoubtedly the ending we actually got is much better than the one shown here

For Fans Only.

It may not seem like it now, but X-Men #137 was a massive moment in the Marvel Universe. As a result, the most interesting thing in this one is not the alternate ending, but the round table discussion between the creators and editors recalling the pivotal decisions that culminated in the Death of Phoenix, followed by the “what might have been” had the original ending been utilized.

If you read this book, keep in mind that writer Chris Claremont has since said that once Jean Grey died there was no intention to bring her back. He wanted Scott Summers to retire happily married to Madelyn Pryor as a reward for all the suffering he had endured. For better or for worse, other creators came into the picture and they eventually resurrected Jean and turned Madelyn into the Goblin Queen….

A battle for honor and comrades

I was a bit curious seeing there was a one shot comic involving the aftermath of the Dark Phoenix Saga so I decided to check it out. What we get is an alterative take on how Jean Grey must pay for her actions either possessed by or as Dark Phoenix depending on which is true (even the creators argue over which it is.) However there is a chance for the X-men to save her from her fate in a trial by combat but when facing the Imperial Guard you need more than just power and skill to win in the end so if you want to know how things turned out you can look it up online if you want or you can check out this story for yourself (I got mine on Kindle) and if you are interested check out the discussion between those involved with the original Dark Phoenix Saga after you read the comic.

What we ended up getting was so much better (even if the death of Jean still makes me sad everytime I think about it).

The original ending seems like an anticlimatic cop-out. But presented here, it's a fascinating, what if? Would the X-Men be as iconic, if this original ending happened?

The real gold in this book is the incredibly insightful round table discussion at the end between all the major creatives who fascinatingly discuss how the iconic story of X-Men #137 came to be.

Nota 6.
Assim, bem medíocre esse final alternativo pra Saga. Ainda bem que foi como foi. Mas é interessante ler essa versão sim.

Phoenix: The Untold Story, Trama/Arte John Byrne, trama/diálogos Chris Claremont, Tintas Terry Austin, calificación 3/5 estrellas.

Deberian publicar X-MEN ELSEWHEN IDW Artist Editions.
