The Ultimate Guide to Squirrel Hunting: Everything You Need to Know to Hunt This Popular Game Animal

Rate this book
It only feels like it's always open season on squirrels. In fact, squirrel hunting is as challenging and exciting as any hunt-and regulated the same way-and it can be as satisfying to the home owner and gardener as it is to the beginning or experienced hunter.

Here's everything you ever wanted to know about the critter Americans love to hate-and hunt. There are concise descriptions of the differences between the sluggish western gray squirrel and the faster, feistier eastern gray squirrel, the Albert's squirrel and the fox squirrel. Maps show the ranges of the animal, and profiles explain where they live, what they eat, and how they move.

Chapters cover state-by-state guides to squirrel hunting, the habitat of the squirrel, and how to recognize it. There's also advice on management of this habitat, with valuable hints on looking out for the next generation of squirrel hunters, as well as more immediate measures like building nest boxes. There are also chapters on hunting methods-from dawn to dusk, on streams, in all kinds of weather conditions, and with dogs. A discussion of guns naturally focuses on the beloved .22, but there is also ample coverage of hunting with bows and shotguns, as well as advice on camouflage and blinds.

Final chapters cover traps, calls, clothing, and-last, but not least-field dressing and cooking squirrels (yes!). For anyone who has ever contemplated loading up for squirrel, this is truly the ultimate guide.

Decent book for beginners, not too much the veteran squirrel hunter doesn't already know. Worth having a copy on the shelf though.
