Independent
Hwang Seon-mi is a South Korean author and professor who is best known for her fable The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly, which has also been made into a successful animated film in South Korea, Leafie, A Hen into the Wild.
It would be easy to assume that The Dog Who Dared To Dream is aimed at children, or young adults, but it isn't. This is a beautifully written, very short novel that is written for adults, although children aged 12 and upwards would enjoy it too.
There are just over 160 pages in this book. It should have taken me a few hours to read, but instead I've been reading this, on and off for a few weeks now. Picking it up, reading a few pages at a time and then going away to think about it .... and to try to clear the lump in my throat.
There are lots of books on the market that feature lovely fluffy dogs. All a bit sweet and sickly for me really, The Dog Who Dared To Dream is not cute, it is not sweet or sickly. It's really quite hard hitting. I had a lump in my throat many times.
I think the book is supposed to be inspirational. I guess it is, as Scraggly; the dog who did dare to dream is a fighter, but my goodness it's pretty raw too.
Scraggly is the scruffiest dog in the litter, and gradually, her more attractive and graceful siblings are taken away, and then one day, her mother disappears too. Her owners, Grandma and Grandpa Screecher are poor people and they can't afford to keep so many dogs, they breed the dogs, to get some money, that's their way of life. Scraggly has to get over her pain. She's constantly goaded by the old cat next door, and absolutely disgusted when the Screechers bring home a rooster hen one day. When she gives birth to her own litter of puppies, it seems as though her family is complete once more ... until the day the man arrives and she finds herself alone again.
The Dog Who Dared to Dream is a story about a dog, but it's a story about relationships and hardship and sorrow and pain. There's not a lot of joy for Scraggly, or for her owners. The story is a tear-jerker, but it's also a cleverly imagined tale with meaning. The style and the premise is probably not for everyone, and to be honest, I really didn't think it would be my kind of thing. I was wrong. I really enjoyed it. It made me sad, but I did enjoy it
Spoiler alert: Why does this book feel relentless and aggressive? Why does everything HAVE to die? Did this dog even dream in the first place? How could it possibly dream when it has been through so much?! It just felt sad for no reason. Maybe I've missed the point, but this was a very challenging read. I enjoy the writing style and that's why this book has 2 stars, not 1.

This is a strange gem of a novel with a unique voice that I suspect is well retained from the Korean original. Our protagonist, a dog named Scraggly, is sweet, noble and quietly courageous as she faces life's many challenges. Her moments of self-doubt and worry are deeply poignant and the reader can't help but root for her. The novel is unlike what I usually read, but I liked it nonetheless.
This book broke my heart... I don't know what to say but it's so realistic and true. If you're looking for a fluffy story of a dog this isn't the one. This is about real life, breeding, animal abuse, how animals are treated in everyday life. The ending killed me but at the same time left me at peace. It's so surreal which is why I enjoyed this book! I love the way it was written in little tiny chapters with pictures and little Scraggly on the front is adorable! I just picture scraggly's pain and struggles she faced since she was a pup! Her life wasn't easy and she still had a kind heart!
This wasn't what I was expecting I was hoping for a heart warming story of a dog but I got a real story and I am just as satisfied!
A short book covering the life of a dog born in a small village. His owner is an old couple who make ends meet through selling the puppies born to whatever dog they are breeding from and from a struggling second hand goods store. Life is pretty tough for both the dog and the old couple. The dog is an outcast because it looks different and does daily battle with an old cat, later with a hen and occasionally with a local pack of dogs. The book didn't hit any highlights until the end which was quite touching.
At first sight it might appear as a children's book, but, hear me out, it is NOT a kid's material but rather an anthropomorphic tale for adults, an allegory for human miseries. I loved the style. The story, even if simple, has kept me occupied. Still, the mentioned dog was hardly depicted to have any dreams at all, so if the translation is accurate, I am confused with what the title tries to convey. The only thing I can think of is the dog's loneliness and longing for love, but the way the books ends gives me somewhat abusive love vibes.
What a great novella. I did not expect to read this book so quickly. It is a lovely tale about the life of Scraggly and her owner Grandpa Screecher set in a South Korean village. Scraggly grows from a pup to an adult experiencing trauma, joy and tragedy. Her litters of pups, the annoying cat who in the end gives her a gift and the staircase around the persimmon tree was a memorable finale.

Born to a nameless mother in a provincial Korean village, Scraggly the black pup instantly bonds with Grandpa Screecher, the elderly owner of a local bike shop, and part-time wielder. When the time comes for Scraggly and her siblings to be sold off, Screecher initially puts her up for sale, but circumstances mean that soon she is the only one left, and a relationship forms between the two that lasts many seasons. It’s not long before Scraggly, thanks in no part to her insatiable curiosity, finds herself heavy with pups herself, giving her a new perspective on life and it’s inevitable heartbreaks. The relationship between owner and dog is often strained as Scraggly is hurt (both emotionally and physically) by Screecher but the loyalty between the two outlasts even the toughest of situations. As the years pass, marked only by the harsh Winters and the growth of a single Persimmon tree, Scraggly learns that love and truth aren’t always wrapped up in the nicest of packages.
While the Scraggly and Screecher relationship is the driving force between many of the events that occur, it is perhaps the love/hate scenario between the dog and ‘The Thief On The Wall’ that is the most heartfelt and genuine. The ‘thief’ in question is an old farm cat who inhabits the wall alongside the Screecher’s farm, and the two often come to blows, especially after the cat causes the death of one of Scraggly’s siblings. The old cat’s honesty often hurts the naive pup, but as she ages Scraggly starts to heed her advice, even if it isn’t immediate.
I will give one warning about the book: there are moments of brutality that will make you flinch, and possibly very angry. It’s harsh, and painful, and not everybody involved comes away unscathed – but isn’t that life?
This was such a sweet read! Scraggly is the most unlucky dog with an almost cursed fate, but still, despite the misfortunes that she faces in her life she refuses to give up. Each time her life took an ever worse twist it felt so sad, and the scene was the thief was the hardest... The reason why I consider this book a 4☆ read is because the first part of the book was less interesting compared to the second one, which had plot twists coming unexpectedly through each page!
A wonderfully written tale of resilience, love and unexpected friendships. A harrowing examination of the relationship between humans and other animals. There were times when I felt that scraggly's relationship with grandpa screecher was comparable to that of an abusive relationship: no matter how much she suffers, how much he puts her through, she cannot help but love him and keep returning to him. She has nowhere else to go but also she always harbours hope
A heartbreaking parable of daring to want more for yourself, this beautiful story follows an unusually coloured dog named Scraggy, and the relationship she has with her owner, her puppies and the resident cat. There were numerous parts that made me sad, and the last couple of pages successfully aged my tears. Stunning story from a very talented author.
Didn't expect to read this all in one sitting but oh my word, it was such a beautiful little book. As someone who adores dogs with every fibre of their being, I absolutely loved this. Plus the ending was so bittersweet <3
I think the title is a bit misleading because not much dreaming took place. Bad thing after bad thing kept on happening instead. Lovely tale albeit a bit depressing. Loved the messages the author trying to convey but kind of wish there was more to the story.
This is the story of a dog named Scraggly. Born an outsider because of her distinctive appearance, she spends most of her days in the sun-filled yard of her owner’s house. She feels lonely, as her siblings do not accept her as equal, but this does not stop her from living, dreaming and wanting to find out what is there outside the yard.
Scraggly as a child is afraid of her mother. She does not accept her full affection like the rest of the puppies, only because she is different. Maybe she is not that strong as the first borns and she may not resemble neither her mother nor her father a lot, but she surely has something! This something is what others may be afraid of. Usually, when there is something we cannot understand or are not aware of, we are afraid of it. But the key is never to give up, and this is what Scraggly does!
Her most close bond is with her master, an old man, that shows her affection and love in short portion. Though this is enough for our little heroine to be loyal to him and try for his wellbeing.
This little book has many themes to go through. It goes through life and bonding, friendship and loyalship as well as fighting for what is right, fighting for freedom, fighting for the week ones and those that cannot defend themselves. It is a microcosm of the real world and real life and is a lesson to all of us.
This book is not about a cute dog that would make you smile and think of happy moments and lovely little puppies. It is a book of life, a lesson to learn, a read appropriate for adults and children after some age. Read it and it will make you re-think your whole life!
