I basically read this in one siting. The story is addictive, like Joanna's personality. To me there was just too little connection between Joanna's miserable childhood and teenage years, and her adult personality disorder, I was missing the in-between years. How come she did not get a chance to grow up & understand that she cannot change others, only herself, even though she was no longer under a direct influence of her domineering mother and submissive father? Come to think of that, how come they were no longer a part of her adult life? And how come, even though we hear about her laughing and making joke, we never really see her sense of humor? I could do with much more of the background story in this case.

Regardless, I think it's an excellent book, and gives a great insight into a mind, feelings and finally actions of a sensitive child/girl/woman, who constantly met people using and abusing her, without realizing how much damage they are causing, or not even caring. Obviously, there is no happy ending, and I am grateful for that. Happy ending just does not go with this kind of a story.

Story of girl's growing up. The main character is dominated by mother, who also dominates her own husband. It's about relations between man and woman, too early discovery of sexuality and spontanous feelings.
