What’s a pirate student to do when he must pass the Piratish Exam, but he can’t say “Arrr”? Quentin the Quick must figure out a clever way to pass the test, so he comes up with a fantastic, wonderful, crazy idea. It’s not the truth, but it’s not exactly a lie…
But it backfires, and now Quentin must walk the plank. Hungry sharks wait below, ready to feast on a pirate lunch. Can Quentin save his skin and his pride before he becomes a shark snack?

Quentin the Quick is a young pirate who must pass his Piratish Exam. He nails swashbuckling and is a natural with a peg leg and eye patch, but what's a young pirate student to do when he can't say, "Arrr?" He'd better figure it out because the stakes are high -- if Quentin fails the test, he walks the plank!
Quentin's Problem is a delightful story set in the pirate world with its not so scary pirates and slightly scary sharks for children to enjoy. Despite being in a fantasy world, readers will identify with Quentin and his fears, and the story offers good lessons about honesty, bravery, and overcoming adversity. The subject creates great talking points for kids and parents to share. What really brings the story together are the expressive and colorful illustrations by K.A. King. King brings a variety of textures to each page, which children will love to look at as they read along.
I highly recommend this book for pre-K through 2nd grade, to be read independently, with an adult, or as a read aloud to groups. Thank you to the author who gave me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review -- the only kind I give.
Quentin's Problem is a great read for children of all ages! I read this first to my 13 year old who has a rather high reading level.. he adored it! My 7 year old loves it as well, he asks me to read "the pirate book". Quentin is a little pirate in training, but he has a little problem. He can't pronounce the letter R. He's scared to let anyone know because he thinks the others will laugh at him and he won't pass the pirate tests. He cooks up a scheme to not have to reveal his secret, but it backfires terribly! He finally learns that the truth is best and is accepted for who he is. This book teaches children to not be ashamed of difficulties they may have and builds confidence. Great book, thanks to Misty Baker!!
This is such a cute picture book about a boy pirate who struggles to say the letter R. It's reminiscent of Hooway for Wodney Wat by Helen Lester, and highlights the fact that everyone struggles with something. With adorable illustrations and a good message of acceptance, this book is a wonderful addition to any children's book collection.
Witty book that tells a story of a pirate with a problem. He realizes that telling the truth will bring him great relief & help others around him that may be struggling with a secret as well. Very clever and fun to read! My daughter was screaming “Arrr!” through the whole book.
{My Thoughts} – Quentin the Quick is a young pirate that is about to be taking his Piratish Exam. He is able to do all the things required of him being a young studying pirate except say the word “ARRRR!!!!” Quentin needs to figure out just what it is that he is going to do when it comes to this specific point in his exam. He comes up with a plan but it doesn’t completely work in his favor.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It had really nice graphics that go soundly with the words written on it’s pages. I also liked that this book had a moral. I always enjoy reading children’s books that have true morals. In this case it is that every one has problems doing something and eventually it is important to ask for help sooner, rather then later. Quentin may have waited awhile before he had asked for help but after he did it didn’t take him long to say “Arrr!!!” like all the other pirates and pirate students.
I look forward to reading this book with my son soon. I am sure that he will enjoy it as much as I have and that it will provoke his curiosity. I love it when books I read to my children cause them to ask me tons of questions and I believe that this is going to be one of those books. This book helps children to face the fear of failure head on and shows them that they can successfully overcome it if they aren’t afraid to ask for help in doing so.
I just got this book and as soon as it was downloaded my boys wanted to read it. They loved it and started to read along with me and they don't read :). It's easy enough for them to learn with.
