The father Darcy Simmons thought was dead is actually alive, but in a coma, and the men who attacked him are after her to produce what he was hiding. But she hasn't spoken to her father in twenty years, since he entered witness protection and became Amish, and has no clue what the criminals want. Now the only person she can depend on is Amish farmer Thomas Nolt, her father's neighbor and closest friend. Thomas knows nothing of his friend's past, but he's determined to save the fragile beauty the man shielded all these years with his silence. But with men willing to kill for stolen items her father was hiding, can Thomas and Darcy find them before their time runs out?

Lancaster County Reckoning is by Kit Wilkinson. It is a suspense set in the Amish community of Willow Trace. The book is definitely exciting and keeps your attention. The characters are definitely realistic and the plot is plausible. Kit Wilkinson has definitely done her research into the Amish communities and their practices. Thomas Nolt, a widower, has come to Jesse Troyer’s farm to look at his well. They are neighbors as well as friends. Jesse has lived in the Amish community for twenty years and has embraced the religion. He has had some friends from his previous life visit occasionally; so when Thomas sees a bright red car at Jesse’s house, Thomas is not unduly surprised. However, when he rides up, he sees a young woman waiting on the porch. What does get his attention is that there is no smoke coming out of the chimney this cold day in December and Jesse’s horse and buggy are where they should be. He had a feeling that something is wrong. He approaches the young woman and asks rudely, which is out of character for Thomas, who she is. She counters with asking who he is. Thomas continues questioning her until she tells him that Jesse was expecting her. However, the door is open. Thomas enters cautiously while calling for Jesse. The young woman follows. They find the house has been trashed and hear a low moan. They find Jesse unconscious on the floor. He had been badly beaten and is bleeding. Thomas has the woman call 911 to get help for Jesse. As they wait, he learns she is Darcy Simmons and she is Jesse’s daughter. She had exchanged letters with Jesse but they were to meet for the first time today. Suddenly her phone rings and she answers it. An unknown voice tells her she looks like her Mother and Father but she has something the caller says is his. Darcy can cooperate or end up like Jesse. What have Thomas and Darcy stepped into? Does Darcy know what is going on? The book starts here in the first chapter and continues to gain suspense as you read. Why haven’t Jesse and Darcy ever met? What hasn’t Jesse told the Amish community? Will Jesse ever wake up to explain?
I really enjoy reading Amish stories and I really enjoy suspense so this book was a joy to me. This book is well written, action packed, and full of faith. You are going to love it. Darcy Simmons is found by the father she has been told died twenty years ago. She meets with him and is scheduled to come to his home. He doesn't answer the door but when a neighbor stops to see what is going on they find her father is badly beaten and in a coma. They are attacked by a man claiming that he wants what her father is hiding. The neighbor comes to rescue her. She can't bear the thought of losing her father all over again. She finds out that he has been in witness protection and living an Amish life. Amish widower Thomas Nolt loves Uncle Jesse like a father. He is her neighbor and his best friend. He knows nothing of the daughter that shows up at Jesse's home waiting to see her father. They discover his body beaten and left for dead. They are attacked. He must keep this woman safe. Jesse would want that. He owes it to him but they must find out who these men are and what they are trying to find before they are all killed. A journey of two people thrown together as they struggle to find out the secrets Jesse has hidden all these twenty years. God has a plan for these two, a plan for a hope and a future. God has a plan for you too, a good plan and not for evil. Give Him your heart and watch Him move in your life.
I never thought Amish country mystery novels would be up my alley, but here we are with the second one I've loved!
The story here is so entertaining and suspenseful that I just kept wanting to keep reading. It's such a hard book to put down. I also didn't know this was the third in a set of companion novels until I was far too invested, and honestly, it still makes sense without having read the other two. But, we do meet characters from the first two novels, and I definitely want to go back and read their stories!
I really liked the aspect that this was more of a witness protection/victim-in-a-coma mystery rather than a murder mystery because you had the added suspense of 'will Jesse survive, will they figure it out before he wakes up, will he wake up and give them a vital clue' to help keep the story interesting.
Lancaster County Reckoning was a fast-paced, action-packed read filled with Amish tradition. I enjoyed the character of Thomas and his love of God and willingness to protect Darcy at all costs. I also enjoyed Darcy's journey to embrace the small community of Willow Trace even though she wasn't Amish.
The author wove a great tale and her vivid descriptions made me feel like I was right there with the characters. There were some twists I didn't see coming and it made the story very interesting. The ending tied everything up nicely. Can't wait to read the next book by this author.
Interesting setting, interesting characters, and good hero and heroine tension, conflict. Having lived near Amish communities for decades, I found this a bit difficult to swallow in places due to things "allowed or not allowed" by the Bishop.
LIS has been using the Amish genre and Romantic Suspense in ways, I find hard to believe. As a story for those who're not aware of the nuances among true Amish communities, this is a good read.
Grabbed this book off the shelf last night when I wasn't quite ready for big. The only drawback was this book pulled me and wouldn't let me put it down until I finished it. Kit Wilkinson made the story come to life and very believable. Will be looking for more by this author in the future.
Lancaster County Reckoning by Kit Wilkinson is a fast and easy suspense book. Kept my interest and definitely will keep this author in mind for more of her books.
I won this book in a Goodreads Giveaway. Thank you, Kit Wilkinson, for the book. It was well-written and kept me in suspense. I look forward to reading more of your books.
This is a great story with romance and suspense that keeps the reader on the edge of the seat. The characters are well defined and the story line would make a great movie.
A really good Amish Mystery.. putting mystery and a little romance mixed in is my kind of reading! Thank you authors for sharing your stories with us readers. Keep up the good work😉
