A life that looks perfect on paper, but feels empty in reality. Attractive, successful, charismatic Jaime Snow has a life other people envy. His already booming business is growing. He isn’t lacking in friends. And he has no trouble finding a date. But there’s an emptiness in Jaime’s heart and a hole in his life that only the right man can fill.

An accidental meeting, a misunderstanding, and falling in love. When Oliver and Jaime end up at the same bar at the same time, they each see something they want in the other. Going to bed together that first night is easy. Building the lifetime relationship they both desperately crave will require trust, time, and a little misunderstanding.

10/2025: I guess Jack is getting a story after all! It only took nine years, but who's counting?

Reread July 2023

This is one of those stories that hasn't aged well. There are references to rent prices and slang that have no relevance today (seven years after the book was published).

The first time around I was certain we were getting Jack's story in the near future, so I didn't mind all the references to Jack's struggles.

But this is yet another series the author set up and dropped, and knowing Jack's story is never going to happen made the last few chapters boring and irrelevant.

I'm not going to change my original rating, but the reread stands closer to 3 stars.

~~~~~~
This is my favorite CC book since Perfect Imperfections. Not a Game is fluffier than an angora sweater and sweeter than key lime pie.
Highlights:
- one Oliver (geeky, chubby game designer who’s hopelessly insecure)
- one Jaime (sexy, successful, and willing to teach Oliver everything he knows about giving and receiving pleasure)
- AGE GAP (Jaime is 40 to Oliver’s 28; I do love me the silver foxes)
- a “twist” that’s obvious almost immediately to the reader, but not to Oliver (it doesn’t matter that we see the twist coming; this is a romance novel, not a mystery, and the twist keeps the spark in the story)
- not one but THREE little dogs
- steam & sexual exploration aplenty (Oliver is an almost virgin and wants to try it all with Jaime, who’s a very patient teacher)
- Shout-from-the-rooftops kind of HEA
One of my very favorite things about this story is that Oliver is not a cookie-cutter MC with high cheekbones and washboard abs. He tops 290 pounds at 6’2”.
Jaime happens to be attracted to husky men and loves Oliver’s body, but Oliver has a hard time believing Jaime's sincerity.
I was prepared for Oliver to lose weight and then, all svelte and gorgeous, get his HEA, but that’s not what happened! This was such a refreshing take on the typical romance novel.
There was potential for relationship drama, but faced with Jaime's confession, Oliver reacts like a mature adult instead of throwing a hissy fit.
Can I get a hallelujah?
I adored Oliver’s amiable, shy personality and his willingness to put himself out there for Jaime. And Jaime is a dream: caring and thoughtful, and completely crazy about Oliver.
These two are so RIGHT for one another, I had a huge grin on my face the entire time I was reading this book.
If you’re looking for a dose of SWEET & SEXY, don’t miss this story!
“Thank you for including me.” Oliver’s hands roamed over Jaime’s back, exploring and caressing. “You made me feel like an important part of your life.”
“You are.” He hugged Oliver tightly. “More important than you can imagine.”
I’ve heard Cardeno C. is known for her fluff and sweet stories, so with her and NR Walker being two authors I can count on to deliver sweet stories, I know I’ll be in good hands.
Case in point: Not a Game. It was fluffy, cute, and wholesome. It’s pretty damn realistic in the sense of how relatable one of the MCs, Oliver, felt, but it also can be too cute for others. But we know that works for me, especially when my schedule has become booked recently. So whether OTT or not, I was here for the ride and enjoyed it all.
I came across this book quite randomly as I was looking for recommendations. I can’t tell you how tiring and annoying it gets to be reading about the same body shapes and sizes, whether with women or men and how unrealistic it becomes. Someone was looking for romance with fat/chubby/overweight main characters, and this was brought up as a recommendation. I had heard about the author before, but after reading this and realizing she’s known for her fluff, I can already see myself reading more of her books.
One of the best things about this is the beauty and embracement of being fat. Often, people will relate the words fat, overweight, and chubby with negative contemplations, as though the words aren't right, unpleasant, and wrong. As if being either is wrong. But this isn’t the time to get into those conversations because this book is about the opposite of that.
“Just because people look good together on paper, doesn’t mean they’re right for each other.” Jack’s expression turned thoughtful. “As much as we might wish otherwise, real life isn’t a game, and if we use our cheat codes to manipulate someone into doing something he doesn’t want, everybody loses.”
One of the only books I’ve read with a fat character is The Weight of It All by NR Walker. From the queen of fluff herself, the story was sweet and wholesome, providing enough endearing and fulfilling content. However, a big difference between that and Not a Game is that The Weight of It All has a main character with the goal of losing weight, while Not a Game doesn’t. But, the other reassuring thing about NRW’s The Weight of It All is that Reed didn’t start finding Henry attractive as he was losing weight. It had happened before. Similarly, in Not a Game, Jaime is attracted to Oliver pretty early on, but Oliver doesn’t have a goal of losing weight.
I think there’s a different type of beauty in relating to book characters and their story. In some cases, this is a direct result of how you see yourself in them, notwithstanding the way that you're seeing yourself through words another person composed and an imaginary world you’ve become fascinated in. But at times, it gives an alternate kind of clearness in your life that turns into a sort of comfort. In this case, while I’m not like Oliver, I could relate somehow. From comparing yourself to believing someone like that can’t possibly like someone like me, how someone sees attractive appearances in you one way or another, how many changes you need to make to seem appealing enough to others.
I’m insecure about my body and myself in every and any type. I’m not here asking for pity or saying this to ask for compliments. Yet, learning about Oliver gave me both trouble and bliss. His instability was too reasonable as a result of how it was formed. While it's not expressed, so we can't know, a portion of his internal considerations and struggle were framed because of the unforgiving words his ex told him, which made him separate himself and feel like he wasn't commendable or enough. Being a 28-year-old geeky, PC adoring future game developer standing at 6"2 and weighing almost 300 pounds, Oliver is apprehensive and shaky, mindful of how normal it is for individuals like him not to be all around appreciated as he would trust.
“I hope you’ll eventually see yourself the way I see you.” Jaime grazed his lips across Oliver’s jaw and down his neck. “Not that I mind the process of reminding you how I feel.”
Oliver’s insecurity was simply heartbreaking, but it also provided a different path for Oliver to take, only to end up finding a man he describes as his waking dream.
Jaime Snow.
In his forties, silver fox, experienced enough, a developer (technically Oliver's boss), your traditional good-looking man with washboard abs, and lover of hunky men.
Aka, Oliver’s fantasy.
But Oliver doesn’t believe him because he thinks Jaime is being paid to say that. See, in Oliver’s eyes, Jaime is the escort he hired to teach him about sex. He doesn’t know that Jaime pretended to be an escort (which required him to lie about his identity) because he couldn’t help but feel attracted to the cute man in glasses he saw sitting at a bar, reading one of his books on coding. And yet, even when Oliver does find this out, while he does react surprised and is even upset, Jaime takes it maturely, managing to handle the situation well. He knows he messed up and should have been honest from the beginning, but he was afraid of Oliver not giving him a chance to “teach him about sex.” Jaime’s type is men like Oliver, but Oliver doesn’t believe that (part of it is due to insecurity, and the other part is because he thinks Jaime is being paid to say that due to it being part of his job). Oliver also handled it well and didn’t overreact. While upset and feeling like Jaime didn’t trust him, he was worried about what everything meant, but they both could talk it out and understand each other.
“What do I need to say or do to make you believe I’m attracted to you?” Jaime lifted his hands, rubbed his palms against his eyes, and then cupped Oliver’s cheeks. “You’re funny and giving and really sweet.” He slid his fingertips into the sides of Oliver’s hair and tipped his head back until their eyes met. “But I’ll be really frank with you, Oliver, if that was all there was to you, I wouldn’t be here right now.”
What I appreciated about this was how comfortable Oliver started feeling with Jaime. While he was initially shy and embarrassed, he later felt comfortable that he hardly covered himself. Add on to that how much Oliver would speak awful about himself, yet Jaime wasn't taking any of it. I adored how the insults Oliver would toss at himself, Jaime took them and transformed them into praises and compliments. But what made this more humane is how Oliver didn’t act that way with everyone. He still felt like he wasn’t enough for Jaime and would constantly compare himself to others, including Jaime’s ex, who he couldn’t help but feel jealous of because of the differences in their physical appearance. But Jaime, being Jaime, would include him in every conversation, whether verbally or physically. Whether it was through touching, hugging, or talking to him, Jaime made sure Oliver knew he loved and accepted him. Oliver’s confidence didn’t grow or shift in one moment, but it also didn’t directly change. His comfortableness slowly improved but was still something he dealt with a lot.
When reading a book like this, you’d probably expect the fat character to have a goal of losing weight, or they become beautiful until their appearance changes. Yet, this took a different route, and instead of Oliver losing weight and changing himself for Jaime, Oliver stayed the same. It was extremely heartwarming all the time. There was never a time Jaime wasted not only reminding Oliver how important he is but also never leaving him out of conversations. Adding on to that, this might sound weird, but I liked how real this book was in the sense of biological aspects of life. In other words, I appreciated the normalization of body/pubic hair. It was not something that became such a big deal but instead was actually accepted and even embraced. Like, how often do I read about characters not minding body hair? Not enough. In this household, we appreciate lovers who understand how annoying it can get to constantly shave and accept body hair because, news flash, it’s normal!
All in all, Not a Game is fluff galore. It’s angst-free, entertaining, and breaks through the assumptions of love and romance. I also loved how sweet this was simply because, despite the reality that discrimination of any type happens in real life, I didn’t want to read about that.
“Would it help if I reminded you that you’re the perfect guy for me?” Jaime asked, voice soft.
Cardeno C. gets cuteness RIGHT! And I'm along for the ride!!
Man, I adored this book. If you are in the mood for low angst, total fluff then you've come to the right place!
Cardeno C. and I have an interesting relationship. I'm a HUGE CC fan, but I've had VERY strong negative reactions and some VERY strong positive reactions to CC's books. This book was definitely in the postitive camp.
I've actually read a few books with similar set-ups before. Thinking that a guy that you met at a bar is the escort that you've hired, but really he is a random person who is interested in you... yup, been there, done that! However, I still love that premise! It just sets up the right amount of tension, and it usually leads to some fabulous sexy-times.
What I liked most about this book is that, for once, we get an MC who is plus-sized and another MC who is into it. I usually see M/M books with a "slim, lithe build" or muscles for days, but rarely do we get an overweight MC who is really and truly desired for their exact body type. I dug it, I dug it a LOT.
I also have a weakness for an inexperienced MC who gets schooled in the art of sex or gets to discover his/her hidden animal. What? I'm pervy like that! I adored Oliver's enthusiasm and his adorable dorkiness. He was so sensual and so present during sexy-times, and I loved how CC wrote him.
Sure, this book is a little unrealistic and sure, it's low-angst to the point of fantasy, but I still LOVED it for what it was! It was the perfect, hot pick-me-up read for when you need to escape into romance!
Keep going with your bad self, Cardeno C.! I'm loving it!
Oh, Oliver, I love you. And, Jaime! You're sooooo kind and loving. Such a sweet plot, adorable characters, amazing supporting characters. I just... There isn't much I have to say, you see, because it was a very subtle story. The ups and downs weren't so dramatic, because both the main characters were (amazingly) very mature and didn't argue after jumping to conclusions. Oliver had gone so far down the getting-self-confident road that he had bravely trusted his feelings for Jaime and decided to see how the things were going to happen rather than simply judging him for his actions and declaring him guilty. I loved the story. And I JUST CAN'T wait to read Jack's story next.
There were a couple thoughts Oliver thought at the beginning that had been repeated at the end. The words were almost the exact same. But that is the only issue I found. So I'm not deducting any stars. For now! :-P
I love the cover, and I reaaaalllllyyyy want to hug Oliver and Jaime. Can I? Please? Pretty please? *puppy eyes*
I love CC and her works. They are exactly my cup of tea, and I need regular fixes of them. *hearts in eyes*
This is a perfectly fluffy, low angst, feel good romance that I read twice in a row. And I loved every minute.
Oliver Barnaby is 6'2", 290 pounds, and self-conscious about being husky and inexperienced. Now that he's moved to Seattle from Oklahoma he's ready to get some experience so he can become the "new" Oliver.
I want Seattle me to be different than Oklahoma me. I have this great job now. I make enough to pay for my own place. I got a new car. But I’m not any closer to having a boyfriend.
The moment Jaime sees Oliver he's smitten. Oliver is exactly Jaime's type. Everything that Oliver finds wanting in himself, mostly his physical appearance, calls to Jaime like a siren's song.
“It took me a lot of years to figure out what does it for me, and I’m past the point in my life where I’m willing to pretend.” Making sure he held Oliver’s attention, he slowly lowered his hands, unfastened Oliver’s pants, and reached into his boxers. “I love your body.” He wrapped his fingers around Oliver’s erection and started stroking. “I love pressing myself against you.” He moved his fist up and down, not quickly but not slowly either. “Your thick thighs, your full ass, and yes, your round stomach, all make me insanely hot.”
One of the many things that I absolutely love about the story is the misunderstanding (that is obvious to the reader) that fuels most of Oliver and Jaime's early encounters. I cheered when the truth comes to light and the most wonderful thing happens...they work it out like mature adults!
crying right now just thinking about it
I love how perfectly Oliver and Jaime mesh and how sexy they are together.
But my most favorite thing about this story is that Oliver doesn't magically drop all his extra weight in order to get his HEA with Jaime. No, he's perfect for Jaime just the way he is - and Jaime loves him, extra weight and all.
“You’re beautiful, you know that?”
“You make me feel like that could be true,” Oliver said quietly.
Jaime curled his hand around Oliver’s nape and brushed their lips together. “It
is true.”
This is a perfect romance for anyone looking for a lighter, low angst, feel good story with great characters, hot sex, and a perfect sigh-worthy ending.
Ugh. Me and this book did not click at all. In fact, I kind of hated everything about it.
Call me crazy, but the entire plotline of this book was already pretty damn ridiculous.
In my humble opinion, Jamie had absolutely no rational reason to keep up the charade of playing rent-boy instead of just flat-out saying he was interested and wanted to date Oliver.
Maybe I could see why he lied during their first meeting (although, not really), but continuing to pretend to be a prostitute for weeks on end, even while you’re head-over-heels in love with the guy? Um. No. Stupid.
And this plot device seriously went on for ages. Most of the book takes place within this lie, so you're definitely working up to the 'big reveal'. Yet, when Oliver finally finds out the truth it is honestly the most anti-climactic thing I have ever witnessed. He hardly even reacts, and they just go about their day.
Anyway, the supposed ‘head-over-heels in love’ part brings me to one of my biggest problems with this book: I saw no connection between Jamie and Oliver whatsoever. I tried to remember a conversation these two had that did not either involve Oliver’s insecurities or sex, and had to conclude that I came up empty. Seriously, I could think of nothing. They had no depth. None.
And well, this brings me to these next two points: sex and insecurities.
First of all, there is way too much sex in this book. There was triple as much sex as there was an actual story or characterization, so if you’re looking for fleshed-out characters, a swoon-worthy romance, a story about self-acceptance, or anything unrelated to sex, you are at the wrong address here.
Now, let’s move on to the ‘insecurities’ part of this book. God, how this annoyed me.
Oliver and Jamie both had one single personality trait, and both of those come back to Oliver’s weight.
Oliver is insecure like you can’t even imagine: this guy thinks nobody will ever like him, care about him or look at him twice. Which, obviously, is in theory a very sad fact, but I quite frankly just couldn’t find myself to care about him or his struggles. If a character’s only character trait is the fact that they’re insecure, then I have no reason to connect with them, and therefore care about said struggles. Sorry, but I was kind of over him and his issues pretty fast.
Jamie was also not a fleshed-out character at all. He, like Oliver, has one thing that defines him, and in his case it is that he is obsessively attracted to people who are overweight. Seriously, this guy talks about nothing other than how sexy he finds big bodies and how he could never feel a spark or attraction to anyone who isn’t overweight. Which, I mean, fair enough, but that shouldn’t be all you think about when it comes to your partner. The way Jamie spoke and thought about it almost made it sound like some sort of kink, and I am convinced Jamie’s main reason for being with Oliver was the fact that Oliver was overweight. Call me sentimental, but that’s not a great love story in my eyes.
Long story short, I didn’t connect with these characters, the story was absolutely ridiculous, the sex was too much and took away from everything else, the insecurities held no emotional punch, and I quite frankly found myself bored throughout this entire read and couldn’t wait to be done with it.
4,5 sweeter than honey stars
It's only my second audio, but I can honestly admit I am in love with Michael Ferraiuolo's voice!!!
I had this one on my radar for a long time but for reasons I wasn't that curious about it.
It's my first book by this author and I'm sorry I've waited so long to read it. Now I can't wait to read more!
I'm rating it with 4,5 stars because I couldn't stop listening!!! And I don't usually enjoy stories low on angst. I'm really not easily won by a sweet story. But I was with this one. It has something to do with Oliver's shyness and all about Jamie's perfection! The perfect boyfriend and some more!
I loved everything about this book. The characters are so different, yet they were exactly what the other needed. I enjoyed their first interactions, their first dates, the reveal of the truth and oh the sweetest ending!!! *sigh*
Belens Audio Book Review
Original book review here.
I honestly didn't think I could love this story any more than I already did. Easily on my favorites shelf, this is a perfectly fluffy, low angst, feel good romance that is absolutely, impeccably captured by Michael Ferraiuolo's performance.
I loved every minute of it.
Ferraiuolo's choices for Oliver, Jaime, and Jack's voices were faultless. He precisely captures Oliver's shyness, Jaime's infatuation, and even Jack's wistfulness.
The narration is a brilliant complement to a really wonderful, lovely story.
This is a perfect romance for anyone looking for a lighter, low angst, feel good story with great characters, hot sex, and a perfect sigh-worthy HEA ending.
What can I say about this except that it was pretty darn awesome?! Literally, this had it all - loveable MC’s, great smex, wonderful feels, and no drama.
Insecure Oliver has made it big in his eyes. He’s moved from his small town life, gotten a job he loves, and he’s determined to start things off right. On his to-do list is to be more outgoing, make some friends, and find someone to share his life with.
As the blurb says, “an accidental meeting and a misunderstanding” throws Oliver onto the path of Jaime. Successful, gorgeous, and equally looking for that someone special, these two connect immediately. And how.
This was completely sweet and swoony and sexy. It had emotions and feels and a touch of that twisty angst I love. And I wholeheartedly appreciate that this did not devolve into crazy, frustrating, and unnecessary melodrama. Hallelujah!
A complete and total fluff bomb of fabulous. I dare you to not like this.
I waited to post my rating and review until I had the time to read this book a second time to see if my first impression was just skewed. Unfortunately, I liked it even less the second time around.
I'm trying to explain why that is because I don't want to let my poor rating stand on its own but I'm not sure how successful I will be. So I apologize in advance if I don't make much sense and for the need for a few spoilers. And I have to say that among my GR friends I'm the odd one out regarding this book so you certainly shouldn't let my opinion prevent you from reading it.
There were two main things in this book that threw me off and spoiled what I'm sure was supposed to be a sweet, endearing romance.
First, Oliver's response and reaction when he finds out I got the sense that Oliver thought he didn't have the right to be angry. That he just had to accept what Jamie had done because he didn't deserve better. That he had to be happy with whatever Jamie did just to make sure Jamie remains a part of his life. The lack of anger, or any criticizing emotion really, and the instant acceptance didn't sit well with me but overall it fit with how Oliver sees himself and his lack of self-confidence.
The second reason, and the one that is harder to explain, is that Jamie's appreciation for Oliver's body and appearance seemed like a kink to me. And I want to make it absolutely clear that that in itself isn't wrong at all. I'm not trying to judge anybody's kink but in this particular story, it just didn't feel right to me.
I really liked the fact that Jamie didn't try to change Oliver and accepted him like he was and I'm guessing the author was trying to show that Oliver was appreciated despite not having a cover model body. But in doing so, there was too much emphasis on Oliver's 'not so perfect' body parts and for me, it went from 'despite' to 'precisely why'. Meaning, I get that Oliver was Jamie's type and that's why he was first attracted to him. But even after getting to know Oliver and developing feelings for him the main focus of Jamie's appreciation for him seemed to be his body (his thick thighs and his size were mentioned over and over again).
Add to this that I despised the way Jamie talked about his past relationship with Jack and I was almost done with this book. IMO, Jack and Jamie had the connection I wished Oliver and Jamie to have. According to Jamie, Jack was / is his best friend. They shared the same interests, they liked each other, the just clicked. And if there hadn't been the small but important part that Jack didn't fit into Jamie's need for a certain body-type (<----- read 'kink') and that they would still be together. The wistful and melancholy way Jamie talked about Jack and that he was still so touchy-feely with him added to my impression that Jamie secretly wished to still be with Jack if he just would look like Oliver.
So yeah, I liked the idea of the story and both MCs on their own (Oliver more than Jamie mind you) but together they just didn't click for me at all. When you wish one of the MCs to be with someone else, someone who falls in love not only with your body but with the whole you, then I just can't give a higher rating as much as it pains me. Again, this is only my impression but one I couldn't shake.
Oliver just moved to Seattle to start a new job. He also wanted to remake himself into a new person. Being so self-conscious and awkward with people, he decided to hire an escort to help him. When Oliver meets Jaime, he thinks Jaime is only attracted to him because he is getting paid to. Jaime was absolutely the sweetest, kindest man ever. He treats Oliver with such reverence, it is hard for Oliver to understand.
“Being with you is as comfortable as it is exciting. It feel so right down deep that it’s hard to remember you weren’t always in my life” ~Jaime
This was a very sweet, super fluffy type of story, but I wish there was some angst in it. Maybe it was a little too predictable
90% of this book may have taken place in a bedroom or on its way to the bedroom, but it was 100% about the heart of the characters. This sort of book is CC's sweet spot and I loved every page.
This was so incredibly sweet and romantic. Like a warm hug. I loved shy self-conscious Oliver, and sexy confident Jaime. I loved that Jaime was attracted to Oliver’s heavier body, and that Oliver wasn’t trying to lose weight. I’m so sick of the “lose weight and be hot and happy” narrative we see in books, movies, shows. This was different and refreshing.
The only thing I didn’t like was the deception after the initial meeting. There is a mistaken identity issue, and Jaime doesn’t correct Oliver and keeps up the lie way too long. But it was cute and sweet enough for me (and Oliver!) to get over it.
Not a Game was so so sweet. It was a perfect vacation read for me. Low angst, awesomely sweet with really likable characters!
Oliver Barnaby is a game developer who is a bit on the heavy side. His self esteem is low and he thinks that because he's not buff, and he isn't sexually experienced, that he'll never be able to find someone to even look past his body type and give him a chance. Oliver wants to make changes in his life. He's in a great new city, has a new job that he loves, he just needs to figure out how to be the guy he needs to be in order to find someone to share life with. So he takes a chance on trying something new that will hopefully help him become more confident in the matters of love and sex, so he can find that special someone.
Jaime Snow is buff and gorgeous, but those things are not something he looks for in a guy. Jaime is attracted to heavier men. When Jaime sees Oliver in The Bookstore bar, he is genuinely attracted to Oliver as he is. So when Oliver assumes Jaime is someone else, Jaime goes with it because he doesn't want to scare Oliver away. He really wants to get to know Oliver and he isn't at all put off by the fact that Oliver is overweight. Instead, Jaime constantly tells Oliver how wonderful and beautiful he is and as they get to know one another, they discover that they really have a connection.
What I loved about Not a Game is that it shows that not everyone wants a partner who is the embodiment of 'physical perfection'. I loved that when Jaime's "secret" was revealed, Oliver handled it like a grown up. I loved that Oliver and Jaime had chemistry and a real connection. I loved that there was no manufactured drama.
Not a Game is sweet and delicious and left me with a smile. Jaime and Oliver get their HEA and it may or may not have brought a tear to my eye. Allegedly. And I hope the next book is for Jack because he deserves his happy, too.
This was just an ok read for me.
I really liked Oliver, he was a sweetheart, but I couldn't connect with Jaime at all. I didn't really like him and I didn't approve of his actions, though that just might be my personal preference. The way the 'misunderstanding' was resolved was too easy. There was also a lot of telling instead of showing, and the dialogues were a bit repetitive.
5 stars for the audiobook. Michael Ferraiuolo is one of my favourite narrators. His voice is so pleasant to listen to.
Overall sweet age-gap mm romance.
It wasn’t perfect, but for once I won't rant, just point out what was positive to me:
Both MCs behaved like adults, there was no unnecessary drama, and no third act break up. One MC (Oliver) was big, but getting slimmer wasn’t ever discussed, just once they talked about the benefits of exercise for health reasons.
Edit. Some statements by the other MC (Jamie) suggested that Jamie was attracted to Oliver because of his cuddly (fat) body, and that was unusual, plus, how it was written felt awkward (I cannot not critizise it seems). The writing and some choices throughout were making me cringe, too, but maybe the book just didn't age well?
Ok. I'll stop now.
5 Super Sweet Stars
This was an amazing story and I fell in love with Oliver and Jaime and their full of Feelz relationship! Oliver has recently moved to Seattle and has a new job at a leading tech company doing a job he loves. He has his own place, his own car, and a good income -- now he just needs a boyfriend to be happy. Having been put down in the past for being chubby and called a bad lay from an ex - Oliver's self-esteem isn't the best. He makes a vow to himself to change that and first thing on his list is learning to be a better lover. So, who do you call to teach you to be a better lover? Someone who does that for a living, of course..Oliver seeks out an escort to teach him.
Jaime sees a cute guy fidgeting nervously and the best he can tell is he is alone. This guy pushes all of Jaime's buttons and he tries to figure out a way to meet him, when he glances at the table and sees the man has a copy of a coding text book that Jaime wrote. He uses this as an opening, not knowing that Oliver had brought the book with him so his escort would recognize him. One thing leads to another, Jaime is smitten and Oliver thinks he is with his paid escort!
Only Cardeno C can get these two adorable guys out of this mishap and she does an amazing job writing their tale. I loved watching these two fall in love, loved the tender way Jaime treated Oliver, loved that Jaime didn't let Oliver feel bad nor talk bad about himself. I also loved that Oliver didn't run off and throw a hissy fit when everything came to light. It was the perfect sweet and sappy love story that will make your heart flutterpate and your soul sing!
5 stars - A must read for all!
And yes, I've re-read it already and needed to come back and sigh over it - Jaime so obviously besotted and insecurity but no real angsting.
AND minor spoiler is just PERFECT, the respect and care that shows is what makes this book an instant favourite.
--
FINALLY - this is the book I've been looking for after loving Perfect Imperfections!
Cute adorable boys, low angst, sexy getting to know each other, there's even a brief appearance of three little dogs. AND one of the characters is a little chubby, no air-brushed abs here thank you kindly!
Talk about adorable - this is it.
There's no real twist to the tale because it's made obvious to the reader - or would be a different kind of story. Oliver is insecure and older Jaime is very obviously besotted. There's slow sexy exploring, snuggling and bonding. While Jaime is successful, more experienced and a patient teacher, the age gap never turned icky, I could see what attracted both men. And they talk and deal with things in a mature fashion, no drama-llama in sight.
Best of all Oliver doesn't have to loose weight, he's desirable as he is but it's also there that if he wants to get healthier Jaime will help him - healthy not skinny, there's a difference. I LOVE people being accepted for who they are, while also being a weirded out by stories that make being overweight a kink. Here was acceptance, attraction and general adorability.
If that's not enough there's appealing side-characters. Jack, mature, sweet, lovely and in need of his own story C.C. please, pretty please, and soon pleeeeease?. And Tamra a strong woman in a man's world, who still manages to be sweet rather than sassy or a bitch - the world may end!
Loved it. Truly did.
Cardeno C. writes fluff like no other.
Oliver has been overweight his whole life. He is very insecure about it and thinks no one could possibly want him. Especially since his one ex-boyfriend told him he was bad in bed.
So Oliver hires a prostitute, to show him the ropes.
It’s like that he meets Jaime in the bar where they’re supposed to meet. Oliver tells Jaime about his insecurities and how much it helps that he is simply paying for his time so he doesn’t have to be nervous.
Of course you can sense from the start that Jaime probably is not the prostitute Oliver hired. But since Jaime really wants to get to know the sexy man better, he goes along with it.
The two meet up once a week and their meetings begin to look more like dates than Oliver would have expected.
Now all Jaime needs to do is convince Oliver that he wants him for who he is, and that he’s not the prostitute Oliver hired..
It bothered me a little that there was this big secret between them, but since there was no real blow out when Jaime did come clean, I started to feel better about it.
I loved how Jaime adored Oliver and his whole body. Being overweight has nothing to do with being sexy, and I loved how Jaime kept telling Oliver that.
The one thing that bothered me a little was that their sexual tastes were a bit different from mine. Jaime kept going on and on in his head about how sexy he found it that Oliver was hairy and didn’t manscape. And they both were crazy about smells. I could have gone without the armpit licking and stuff. But hey, whatever floats your boat.
Overall, this was incredibly sweet and is bound to make any reader feel good.
This is the Cardeno I know and love!
I had so much fun reading this almost zero-angst, fluff-filled, fairy tale-like story that I am still smiling when I think of it.
Oliver and Jamie make for an amazing couple. Oliver is overweight and really down on himself because of it. He truly thinks no one would ever look at him twice, let alone want him. Imagine his surprise when the superhot Jamie not only takes a second look but enters a sexual relationship with Oliver. The story is very sex-based, mainly because Oliver was almost completely inexperienced sexually and Jamie was all too happy to help with that. Very fun times there. But there were soooooooo many sweet feelings evolving left right and center that I couldn’t fault the sex-fest. This book was marshmallow sweet from all angles folks.
The “false pretenses” under which they met, are better left to be discovered individually, so I won’t go into that. But let’s say that when the big reveal happened, it was not big at all, and Oliver dealt with it in a very mature, “I have my priorities straight/not gonna worry about shit like this” kind of way. I absolutely loved that! Cardeno did not disappoint in delivering the fluff and made it a very steamy journey there too.
I especially liked how generous Jaime was with compliments to Oliver. More so, the compliments were absolutely genuine and even though Oliver took a while to believe Jamie was legitimately turned on by Oliver’s physique, he eventually accepted that Jamie wants him for who Oliver is.
Extra bonus that the story did not finish on a “fixer-upper” note.
Oliver did not change anything about the way he looks nor did Jamie ask him to. The HEA was glorious, and left me smiling wide.
Recommend!
Oliver, a shy techy gamer decides he wants a different life when he moves to a new city for his job. After answering an ad for "services" he decides to learn some new "things". Jamie, spotting Oliver in a bar, becomes his teacher.
These two were so cute and sweet together. I absolutely ADORED Jamie. He was so patient and loving with Oliver. I loved how he wanted Oliver and he was perfect in his eyes. Oliver had some serious insecurities about his body and after one failed attempt at a relationship, thinks he can't have what he's always wanted and can't understand why Jamie would want him or be attracted to him. Even though these two met under unusual circumstances and the rouse went on for quite some time, Jamie was so awesome and I loved how Oliver could have reacted one way when finding out the "secret" but instead was mature and realized it was for his own good and was better for it.
I really only had one issue and most people probably aren't bothered by it. While I was glad Jamie wasn't a cold hearted bastard to his ex, I wish he wasn't quite so friendly. I honestly don't know too many people who would want their partner to But hey, that's just me. I'm definitely looking forward to Jack's story though I hope he's not still pining away for Jamie...
Overall it was a sweet and cute read.
Not my favorite book from CC, I'm afraid.
What I loved he most was the fact that the chubby MC (who is not identified as bear) stayed that way, and didn't go through an extreme makeover. We definitely need more real life men in MM.
However, I didn't manage to connect to the story. Too many lies that felt unecessary from Jaime's part... .
A little bit of conflict when Oliver found out the truth, wouldn't equal drama, IMO. On the contrary, it would make more sense than Oliver being upset for like 30 min, and then letting everything go.
Anyway, that was just ok for me, and the fluff is the CC I know and love. I'm definitely going to read the next story in the series. Jack, hopefully?
I'm giving it the full five stars. I can't help myself. Any book that makes me feel this good from beginning to end, then ends up giving me mushy mush mush tears at the HEA deserves all my stars.
Oliver and Jamie are two full grown, established, mature gay men. Each have their own somewhat emotional pasts but are actively working to overcome them. When they come together, it clicks. It clicks into place and locks tight.
I enjoyed their story so much. I particularly appreciated their great big hearts, honest communication and total lack of OTT drama. Good people, beautiful people, people I wish were real and part of my life.
Read this uplifting story when you need to feel good.
Fluffy! Sweet! No-angst!
EXACTLY what I needed right now!!
Gah I just ate this up.
Oliver was too damn adorable! Sweet and nervous and not some unrealistic model-perfect guy, I loved him so much!
Jamie and Oliver's initial meeting was too much! That whole thing was too cute!
And yes
I was glad that there wasn't some like big stupid fight and graveling and the whole thing because that would have really killed my mojo. If you want a book with angst, go elsewhere my friends, but if you need something sweet and feel good and happy then this is it!
