Join Monkey D. Luffy and his swashbuckling crew in their search for the ultimate treasure, the One Piece.
As a child, Monkey D. Luffy dreamed of becoming King of the Pirates. But his life changed when he accidentally ate the Gum-Gum Fruit, an enchanted Devil Fruit that gave him the ability to stretch like rubber. Its only drawback? He’ll never be able to swim again—a serious handicap for an aspiring sea dog! Years later, Luffy sets off on his quest to find the “One Piece,” said to be the greatest treasure in the world…
Young Luffy’s buccaneering adventures build to a climax as he fights relentlessly to save his brother Ace, who’s slated for execution by the World Government. When powerful pirate Whitebeard steps into the fray it seems like things might start going Luffy’s way...until the Navy blasts back, and it turns out Luffy’s battle has just begun.
Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.
As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

- Gramps + Yeah? - Should I have been born...? + Keep on living and you’ll find out.
“I’m so messed up at a time like this, my old man, my little brother, my brothers in arms... their blood is being spilled all around me. And I am so happy I can’t stop my tears. At a time like this, I want to live.”
“Yeah... just like with Sabo... if I didn’t have an annoying little brother like you... I would never have thought... to live...”
“I only have one regret, that I couldn’t see you achieve your dream, but I’m sure you will do it. You are my brother after all.”
“The thing I really wanted wasn’t fame or anything. What I really wanted was to know that it was okay for me to be born. Thank you for loving me.”
“The few seconds of courage you were prepared to give your life for, whether for good or bad, have greatly changed the fate of the world.”
“It's through knowing both victory and defeat, running wild, and that men truly grow up. Don’t be afraid to cry. Make it through this!”
These volumes mostly focus on the Paramount War…but, while there are plenty of cool fight match-ups (TBH slightly too many for my taste), the most important thing we get here is a MUCH deeper understanding of who Luffy’s brother Ace is, how he got to be the way he his, and why he and Luffy are so protective of one another. We also learn about another important character: Sabo.
But, unfortunately, I need to list ALL of that as:
Oda, of course, cannot restrain himself from real-world-relevant social commentary even in what’s mostly a punch-em-up battle sequence! He confirms in the Q&A that Grey Terminal is based on a landfill in Manila that people lived on even though it was on fire: https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smo... “The people of trash mountain make a living by collecting recyclable materials and selling them in town. But none of them actually wants to live in the city, for they know that life can be even more miserable there…This is the kingdom of Goa…It is considered a successful example of a society where everything unnecessary is removed.” Thus, it is fitting that we get a glimpse here of Dragon and Iva (and another character we recognize!) going about their revolutionary activities: “Iva: I’m surprised to find you keeping watch here, in a remote kingdom of the East Blue. Does this place have some special meaning for you? Dragon: This nation is the future of the world in miniature. A world where unwanted things are discarded can never be truly happy…(to trash mountain refugees) Those of you with the will to fight for freedom! Get on this ship!” (Also: Way to dodge the question, Dragon! But WE know why you’re here!)
After the battle in the present day, most of the people of the ‘One Piece’ world rejoice, having been taken in by the government’s propaganda. But the narrator notes: “The navy’s victory did not necessarily bring peace. The death of [redacted] caused a power vacuum that threw the oceans into further turmoil.” This makes a lot of sense – we often see this in the real world, where taking out a cartel boss without addressing any of the underlying dynamics just leads to more intense gang violence. And the pirate in question was actively using people’s fear of him to stabilize the areas under his control and allow their residents to live peacefully!
Luffy is at the lowest we’ve ever seen him, raging out over his inability to protect someone he cared about. There’s an interesting cut to Shanks, who is thinking: “Luffy, I know you’re in a lot of pain right now…I wished the captain [Roger] would run away or let himself cry sometimes. Listen, Luffy. You grow up and become a man by experiencing victory and defeat, by doing difficult things and shedding tears. It’s all right to cry! Just overcome it!” Damn. The main character’s key mentor in a piece of media whose target audience is teen boys saying that not only is it OK for a man to cry but that he wishes the man they both admire most could have let himself be vulnerable is SUPER powerful! Of course, Shanks hasn’t seen Luffy since he was seven. Jimbei, the one who’s actually there, knows that Luffy doesn’t have any problem crying or expressing emotion – in fact, right now, he needs to stop grieving so violently or he’s going tear his stitches and die! So to snap him out of his spiral, he barks: “Regret and guilt are consuming you!...Don’t dwell on what you’ve lost! What’s gone is gone forever! Try to remember what you still have!! And Luffy, tears still running down his face, remembers: “I HAVE MY CREW! Jimbei is such a mature voice of reason for Luffy and the Straw Hats; I have to love him!
Which is when we get views of the Straw Hats reacting to news of the Paramount War and [redacted]’s death in their own ways – but all eager to get back to Luffy and help him! Chopper is sure Luffy has been reckless and will need medical attention (correct). Nami tries to steal a balloon - and whatever else her sticky fingers find - to get off the weather-wizard’s sky island. Zoro gets lost on his way to find a boat and then distracted fighting armored apes. And Sanji argues with Iva and then gets his ass handed to him by the “king of queens”. But I’ll follow up on Iva, Sanji, and the Kamabakka Queendom stuff in the next review!
Just as a quick aside, though…I don’t think I’ve seen ANYONE talk about it, but one of the Whitebeard pirate commanders, Izou, is clearly another okama, right? That three-puff hairstyle and lipstick is a traditional feminine style in Japan, as worn by geishas and also regular women in feudal Japan, like the protagonist of ‘Blue Eyed Samurai’ when she wants to look girly! So that’s interesting: Between Luffy, Dragon, and now Whitebeard, it is starting to be a pattern that these force-of-nature leaders in mostly-righteous opposition to the corrupt government get along well with queer people! And, though we don’t get to know them particularly well during the battle, Izou is clearly just as much a badass as all the other Whitebeard commanders.
Also, In the Q&A, Oda confirms character design for Iva based on Dr. Frank-N-Furter - but the NAME came from a drag performer, Norio Imamura, who Oda nicknamed “Iwa-san”. He* is in the same theater troupe as Luffy’s voice actress, and Oda relates that: “After Imamura found out that ‘Iva’ was based on him, he rushed to the [anime voice] auditions for the character and was cast”. How cool is that!! *Going with manga here, but given past translation issues with pronouns…?? Series: One Piece #58-60 Rating: 4 stars - It was really good
This was another emotional volume. Luffy saves Ace from being executed but sadly Ace still doesn’t survive. Ace sacrifices himself to save Luffy from being killed by Akainu. Ace was a wonderful brother for Luffy and I was so upset to see him die, even though I knew it was going to happen. Whitebeard is also killed during the battle but he puts up a hell of a fight and helps his sons escape in the process. Red-Haired Shanks arrives and ends the battle between the pirates and the Navy. It will be very interesting to see Shanks actually fight in the future.
After the fight Luffy struggles with his grief and we get a flashback of his childhood. We learn how he became brothers with Ace, and about his other brother Sabo who died when they were children. This was just a very sad volume with a lot of death and grief. This volume is the end of the Straw Hats first voyage and begins the time skip which leads to deadlier foes.
Trigger warnings: on page death of siblings; grief
Wow. This series continues to impress; I think this is my favorite volume to date.
It doubles down on what makes the series great as a whole, but also digs deeper into the relationships and emotions between the characters, and TOTALLY changes the status quo of the series. (My one minor complaint is that there's actually SO MUCH going on that most of the crew get essentially cameos, since they're scattered all over.)
And it even moved Luffy up a notch in my book, which is saying something, since he's amongst my least favorite characters.
I might take a brief hiatus, let this volume sink in, and get caught up in the anime. (I've mostly managed to stay spoiler-free from this series overall.)
Well, I didn’t expect this, but then again, the manga genre is always full of surprises and I can’t predict what will happen next. That’s why it’s so fun!
God... I don't even know where to start. This was an emotional rollercoaster for me and it will be hard to condense all of those emotions into this review.
So the Marineford arc is done and the most of the Post War arc was also included here and they were both amazing. Especially Marineford which made me ugly cry for reasons that I will not spoil in this beginning part of the review. We got some amazing character moments and a very compelling backstory but more in the spoiler part.
Overall, these were probably the best 3 volumes of One Piece so far and I just absolutely adored everything about them. I can easily give them 5 stars.
The SPOILERS will follow!! You have been warned.
This is your last chance to stop reading. Okay now that everyone is gone for sure...
Ace dies. I warned you to go away so don't whine that I've spoiled you something. Anyway... I was crying so much. It was terrible. I screamed and smiled and cried all at once and if anyone saw me at that time they would probably think I'm weird. Anyway, have I mentioned how much I love Ace? I probably have but still... I love Ace so fucking much. My poor boiiiiii. Sorry, I gotta get myself together. But it's so sad how he considers himself a monster and thinks he never should've been born. That's just so sad and I love how he really does wanna live at the end because he has people who love him around him and he sees that there are so many that want to save him. And I feel like his death hurt so much because Luffy really did save him but it wasn't enough. It looked like they would be free but then boom... Ace is dead. Just like that. Still... I love that he died in order to protect Luffy and then thanked him for loving him and smiled and died in peace with himself. I'm not sure if I should cry or smile while I'm writing this because this is so sad but wholesome at the same time. Sorry... I just really do love Ace this much.
Then, of course, we have our boy Luffy who just gave everything to save his brother only for him to die in his arms. He literally uses the haki thing and he doesn't even know it because he just wants to save Ace. I love that he punches Garp because he is in his way... like, yeah, he's Luffy's grandpa but he doesn't care because he is in his way. And when he wakes up on Hancock's island and realizes that Ace actually died... I'm so sad for him cause he starts doubting himself and he is so sad and lonely and heartbroken. I'm just glad that Jimbei convinced him to stay strong for his crew.
Then we gotta mention Whitebeard... another important casualty of this Summit War. My man got stabbed by one of his crew-mates who has been tricked into it and despite that neither him nor his crew were angry at that man but at the Marines for tricking him. Then he literally sacrificed himself so his "sons" could get away and no one else would die (also I love that he punched Akainu cause that blood-thirsty piece of shit deserved it). Then he dies and it pains because all he ever wanted was a family and he was a good man who just wanted the best for his crew.
Then I guess I should condense the other pirates in the War into one segment. I loved Crocodile. He was just really bad-ass and cool. He saved both Luffy and Ace from certain death just to spite the Marines. Come on. That's one amazing character. Marco was also cool. I loved that he also saved Luffy and helped bury Ace and Whitebeard (and I love his powers). Then we have Teach. I hate this man and I don't wanna talk about him... let's move on. Law shows up at the end which is great. I love that he helps Luffy and that he says how they share a bond or something... I can't wait to see more of him (also I love that bear on his crew). And then we have my boy Shanks. I love him. He just stopped by to end the war and he literally says "If you wanna fight me go on, but you're gonna lose." And I love how picks up the head but doesn't want to give it to Luffy himself because that would mean that Luffy broke his promise. Also I love his relationship with Buggy and how he lies about the treasure so the clown would do what he wants. And then he says he's gonna be the one to help bury Ace and Whitebeard... I love him.
Ugh, now I also have to talk about the Marine side. I will start with Garp because he's a piece of shit. I loved it when Dadan punched him because it brought me joy that someone could do it instead of me. It's truly sad to see that he values his job more than his family. Sure, he cried but he didn't do anything. He even tried to stop Luffy when he was trying to get to Ace. Then we have Coby whom I just love. My boy stood up to Akainu (who knows no mercy) and told him to stop the war because the deaths were pointless after they reached their goal of killing Ace. And he now has the haki thing which is great. Regarding the admirals... I hate Akainu with a passion and I want him dead; Aokiji is fine and just doing his job; and Kizaru as well but he just annoys me on a personal level. Sengoku is fine (I guess)... I have no problem with the man. I also need to talk about Doflamingo because this man is evil. He killed Moria... they were supposed to cooperate. What the hell? And who is the person that ordered him to do it?
Anyway, there are only 2 more things that I'd like to discuss.
The first one of them is Luffy, Ace and Sabo's backstory. I love it. It's so cool to see them as kids and I love how they made each other brothers because they have no one else except for each other. Sabo is such a great character. He sacrificed his freedom to save Ace and Luffy and then he supposedly died when going out on the sea. We never saw his body and we wouldn't mention him if he weren't important for the future so I guess he might have survived that accident. His letter was heartbreaking and Ace saying that he won't die... that hit Luffy hard in the present. We also got a glimpse of Dragon so that was cool... and Sabo actually met him. And then Robin almost did and she might in the next few chapters.
Anyway, I also want to mention our crew a little. I love that Usopp is fat and wants to help Luffy. Then Sanji just met Iva and it's hilarious. I love how this poster came back into play and Iva doesn't trust him that he's the Sanji because he doesn't look like the photo. And then we have Zoro not wanting to trust Mihawk but I have a feeling that these two will spend some time with each other now. I can't wait to see the crew back together though.
Alright this is the final of the BIG 3 Sagas, the masterpieces that the whole community agrees on. This is basically the mid series finale, concluding the "first half" before the time skip. It is obviously the largest in scale (in terms of the impact on the world and also just like impact on the actual characters). This is also the first time we start to feel like we even have a remote sense of how large the world is and how powerful the highest level characters can get. This is also the first of the non crew focused sagas (a turn that would continue through the time skip) which I think showed a lot of confidence on the part of Oda that we would remain interested even with many of our favorite characters on the back burner. Then ofc the saga climaxes in arguably the most tragic scene in the series. Remember when I said this saga took the themes of Water 7 and raised the stakes? So if Water 7s theme is "you may drift apart, come into conflict with or otherwise have to part ways with your friends/ comrades" as the main anxiety, the theme of Summit War is "what if you are too weak/ are powerless to protect your loved ones from danger or death". Ok onto the reviews.
Sabaoty: So we get a lot of amazing shit in this arc. First off we get a total recontextualization of Arlong Park as we see the horrible way Fishmen and Merfolk are treated by humans (this ofc is explored further in the Fishman Island saga). We also are introduced to the worst generation, the other pirates of Luffy's gen who have made it this far and are considered just as formidable. We also see just how horrible and evil the Celestial Dragons are, we see the system of slavery which exists for their pleasure. We also get the most satisfying punch in media history. Finally, the 3 captains: Kidd, Law and Luffy working together was just muuuuuahhhhh such a fantasy. We are however then confronted by the sheer power of Kuma. Now there have been times in the past where we are made aware of the fact that Luffy is def not the most powerful person in this world but this run in with Kuma and Kizaru is the first time (I guess other than the glimpse we get in our early introduction to Mihawk) where we are like oh shit these ppl are in an entirely different class to the straw hats. Here we feel pure terror, we arent feeling like "how is luffy going to win this fight" but rather "how are the strawhats going to even escape with their lives". Then we ofc get Kuma sending all the members flying across the world and thats the last time the whole crew is together for the whole saga. This decision on Oda's part is rly refreshing as we see Luffy first of all coming to terms with that anxiety of "I wasnt strong enough, my friends might all be dead bc I am so weak" but also we see Luffy operating on his own and having to form a new coalition around himself. This process is a treat to watch mostly bc the whole series is kinda about how coming into contact w Luffy changes the lives and perspectives of the ppl around him.
Amazon Lily: Ok so this is def the weak link of the saga. It obviously plays into the straight male fantasy of there being an island of only beautiful women who have never come into contact w a man. I do however ofc love Hancock and the Gorgon sisters.
Impel Down: I fucking LOVE Impel Down. Just like Enies Lobby's train sequence I just love when Oda takes a v established narrative trope and tackles it from his own perspective in these v fresh or even just well executed ways. I love a prison break narrative and then the fact that this is the perfect excuse to bring back so many iconic villains from earlier in the series but this time on the same side as Luffy is just a fucking fantasy. Buggy and Mr. 3 working together but always inadvertently helping Luffy even as they are just trying to escape with their own lives is hilarious. The star of the show however is...... once again...... Bon. Motherfucking. Clay. Our favorite cross dresser is once again teaming up w Luffy, saving Luffy on multiple occasions, showing just how much of a real one he is OVER and OVER. Let me back up though and say, its so sick how Impel Down is obviously atleast partially based on the Hell of Dante's Inferno. This is something I forgot to mention in Enies Lobby but Oda is so good at drawing maps and diagrams of these structures so that we know exactly where everything is in relation to everything else. So we are descending down, down, down and we then get to the Ivankov's refuge of the Newkama!!! Another serious queer moment and another one of my favorite characters. The idea that there would be a secret place in a prison where people escape to and all become trans together is so fucking sick. How they have their distribution network through the whole prison etc. UGHHHH I just love Iva so much and the fact that she is a comrade of Dragon's and a member of the Revolutionary army is just amazing. Then finally we get down to the bottom and they free Jimbei and.... you know who else is back... CROCODILE!! This time fighting alongside Luffy oh my god this guy is so fucking cool. Anyway there is a toooon more I can say about Impel Down, I love this arc, but I'll refrain. The last thing I'll say is that the only reason Luffy and the others are able to escape... is bc Bon Clay once again sacrifices himself, putting himself in extreme danger to ensure all the prisoners are able to safely get away from Impel Down. And idk if I mentioned but, its not like Luffy and his provisional crew just released high value potential comrades, they liberated the ENTIRE PRISON.
Marineford: Ok this is the big finale, the war between Whitebeard and the government, the potential execution of firefist Ace!! This is the manga's most epic moment. The first thing I'll say is that Crocodile was on DEMON TIME, him instantly pulling up on whitebeard and later (temporarily) stopping the execution?! Crocodile was by far the MVP of this arc. The stuff we learn about Whitebeard makes his whole fate also rly tragic, when his man turns on him I gasped (well I was gasping a lot throughout this whole arc tbf). Then ofc we get to Ace's fate and the flashbacks about him Luffy and Sabo. I feel I don't need to say much about this as it is such an iconic moment of the series and its v obvious how it is building on the theme. Sooo tragic though nonetheless, v v effective.
Post Marineford: Ok this is basically setting up the whole time skip and the second half of the series. The library is about to close though and I have two more actual reviews to do so ending here.
So much happens in this one!!! (duh! 3 volumes crammed into 1 book with cheaper paper than usual. They don't re-edit anything, all the original books' intro pages & cover art page still present in their proper volume 'breaks')
Whitebeard Pirates vs Navy vs Seven Warlords of the Sea, the entire Ace situation, a massive volume-long flashback to Ace & Luffy's growing up (the parenting of shonen series: leave your kid with some bandits and/or on a mountain and scream for the best), and finally the big setup of going from Grand Line to The New World
StrawHats crew aside from Luffy gets barely 10 pages per, as they're scattered all around. The action continues to be ridiculous, yet all the bazillion characters remain unique-looking from the craziest fight explosion to some weirdo bird island 1-panel (all the women waist-to-bust ratio remains utter nonsense and is only gettin worse. Kinda miss back in earlier volumes when waists weren't always tinier than heads)
The amount of FEELS?? I can’t even. It took me so long to finish because the pain and sadness were too real 😭😭 Man… ASL is truly my shaylas...the bond, the heartbreak, everything. Absolute masterpiece.
And Ace… honestly, his character is so layered. He feels like someone who could’ve been a main character in his own right, but instead he was destined to become the one who haunts the narrative. That’s why his character bloody hurts.
And the whole storyline with Grey Terminal and Sabo was chef’s kiss. Sabo’s character was written so well, showing how privilege can create blindness, cognitive dissonance, and dissociation from the suffering below him… how the rich can look away and genuinely believe that’s just the fate of the poor.
I like how Akainu, Kizaru, and Aokigi’s designs showcase the range of Oda’s art style. He juggles many characters in this omnibus, but they are all distinct in terms of shape and facial features. Their personalities clash in entertaining ways, as well. I was never bored of Luffy’s journey to rescue Ace, despite its length. Oda’s pacing is excellent, and I’m impressed by his attention to detail, in panels that showcase the large-scale fighting as well as in recurring characters/abilities. I’ve enjoyed this solo adventure of Luffy’s immensely but am looking forward to the Straw Hats’ reunion in the next omnibus!
Everything comes to a head as the Paramount War ends. It's another of those intense collections as Luffy does everything in his power to save his brother Ace. There is no really way to go into it without spoilers. I can only say it was emotional, powerful, and some of the best pages the series has yet provided.
Ever since the War of the greats things have been moving in different directions. The crew is more spilt up and new characters are flooding in. I still love it but Arabasta, Enis Lobby, Shabondy, Impel Down and Marine HQ are hard to beat!
This is hands down the best story arc so far in the series. It had insane action, emotional moments, and filled to the brim with story and world-building. I am sad at its conclusion but excited with what is to come out of it for all those involved in the war and Luffy with his estranged crew.
El ritmo al que me he fumado esta batalla? La tensión, los personajes, los monólogos q se ha cascado cada uno, las trampas... Bueno, bueno, BUENO. Emocionadísima, posiblemente mi arco favorito hasta la fecha .
Wow!! I am absolutely loving this One Piece adventure!! The whole story up until now has been phenomenal. The found family in this series is chefs kiss. This book tho, let me tell you, it broke my heart. I was literally bawling. It was so incredibly sad and then beautiful at the same time. I really love this series, I am so glad my youngest son talked me into reading it!!! This is the halfway point of the series and now I’m on to the next part!!! Everyone should give this series a try!!!
Another awesome and exciting volume of one piece, everything about one piece is so perfect! The story is so awesome and has the best art and lots of awesome characters 😻😻👌⛵️🏴☠️
Oda really tried to make up for breaking my heart over Ace's death by giving me a cute story about Luffy, Ace and Sabo, but all that did was fuck me up even more. Cheers pal, nice one.
