An epic story of war and survival set in the legendary Gundam universe!
In the Universal Century year 0079, the space colony known as Side 3 proclaims independence as the Principality of Zeon and declares war on the Earth Federation. One year later, they are locked in a fierce battle for the Thunderbolt Sector, an area of space scarred by the wreckage of destroyed colonies.
The fleets of the Earth Federation’s Moore Brotherhood and the Republic of Zeon have shattered each other in a bloody battle for the Thunderbolt Sector. Mirroring the greater struggle, the ferocious duel between Io Fleming and Daryl Lorenz leaves both the Full Armor Gundam and the Psycho Zaku heavily damaged and Io a prisoner of war. The Zeon space habitat A Baoa Qu now becomes the final battleground of the One Year War…
This volume moves the narrative out of the isolated Thunderbolt sector, and into the larger conflict in the galaxy.
The zeon forces have continued to be beaten back, despite victories in the Thunderbolt sector, and our two protagonists (antagonists?) appear during the conflict.
I really struggled to place the Thunderbolt conflict within the larger conflict depicted in this volume. Did the Thunderbolt sector really matter? What effect did that have on the larger conflict? These questions are not really answered.
About halfway thru this volume the war is ended and time moves ahead almost a whole year. We see both our main characters easing into different style of lives. This has an interesting effect of showing the characters in the sort of post war veteran status; however, it appears that violence is still brewing under the surface. I am curious to see where this narrative goes, but this volume suffered from sort of ending one story thread, and introducing hints of another, but not really starting one.
Worth reading, but not my favorite entry in this series.
Gundam Thunderbolt continues to prove that it's one of the strongest mecha manga on shelves in recent times. The story is great, written in an ambiguous style that makes protagonists and antagonists be dependent upon the reader's political beliefs (one of the things I loved about the Wing anime). Definitely a great read. strongly recommend this series for Gundam fans.
Author and Illustrator Yasuo Ohtagaki brings us the next chapter in the Thunderbolt saga. Beginning on December 31 0079 with the fall of the Zeon fortresses A Baoa Qu, the Federation forces take with a lot more than what we saw in the original Gundam anime. They had a whole troop of Gundam head troops storm it and take their mobile suit construction facilities. Once they took the entire fortresses an armistice between the Federation and Zeon forces was signed and Zeon their colonies became a Republic. As the year tuned into 0080 the remnant Zeon forces have continued to fight back against the Federation forces and both Io who rejoined the Federation to pilot a new prototype Gundam and his old enemy the pilot of Physio Zaku are heading towards each other again. I highly recommend this series and I'm looking forward to reading the 5th volume.
My hot take is that all sci-fi are good or bad retellings/reimaginings of Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein. In which case, this is one of my favorite retellings. As it takes time to set up the consequences of the technology fashioned in war and how taking ownership is an act of war, in the refashioning of an one world government; it’s similarities to Frankenstein is in the supernatural appearance of other worldly consciousnesses appearing through the repercussions of scientific actions.
When will we ever pause and stop with technology as means to ends, ignoring the Pollutions we place upon our and others souls?
