Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma, Vol. 19

Rate this book
An action-packed, saucy food comedy featuring one boy’s determination to be top chef!

Soma Yukihira’s old man runs a small family restaurant in the less savory end of town. Aiming to one day surpass his father’s culinary prowess, Soma hones his skills day in and day out until one day, out of the blue, his father decides to enroll Soma in a classy culinary school! Can Soma really cut it in a place that prides itself on a 10 percent graduation rate? And can he convince the beautiful, domineering heiress of the school that he belongs there at all?!

Fighting to save Alice’s society from being abolished by the Azami administration, Ryo Kurokiba, battling as her champion, begins his shokugeki with Central elite Kusunoki. The theme is salmon, and both chefs put everything they’ve got, including their pride, into their dishes. So what’s got Alice so troubled that she tells off her own uncle, Dean Nakiri, at the end of the match?!

That ending was crazyyyyy! I can't believe Soma did that. Like what the hell was he thinking?!? There's no way I can't immediately dive in the next volume with an ending like that. This manga just keeps getting better and better and while I have a tendency to say that with every volume. It is clear that it has been well researched and well planned and thought out. At first I thought the challenges were getting kind of old but the stakes at which the challenges are taking place are crazy. I just know that I appreciate the Institute and will be completely and totally heartbroken if it changes because of Erina's father. Some of the things that I loved included the relationship development between Alice and Erin's, the artwork, and Soma's compassion for fellow students and his appreciation of small businesses. It is clear that this story is far from being over and I'm so happy to read each and every future volume.

Fun fun fun. I continue to enjoy this series and I'm amazed that this formula (shokugekis, ridiculous foodgasms, info dumps on food preparation) hasn't gotten old for me yet. The villain in this arc is lame, but I love how it's made Erina more of a focus. Watching her deal with "commoner" living continues to be amusing.

The volume ends on a cliffhanger (as they typically do) but lucky for me, I already had volume 19 checked out from the library. c:

In a nutshell: Kurokiba versus a scrub along side fellow scrubs.

There were new characters here but ultimately, they wouldn't even figure into the long term story. Even Kurokiba became a major disappointment himself. What saved this volume was the the match between Soma and the First Seat which ultimately wouldn't even matter after all that pre-game hype. Still, this would be remedied with the exciting Hokkaido arc and regimental shokugeki that comes later.

The recipes seem to become more complex. It's something that could daunt a casual home cook.

This is one of the best Shokugekis I've ever seen. The art is just amazing. Really great work by Saeki Shun. And the plot is going strong. Definitely worth it to buy.

Another amazing volume of Food Wars! I honestly expected nothing less from this series. I can't really get into the details but the last volume ended at the beginning of another shokugeki to determine the fate of one of the school research societies, and this volume picks up right where it left off. We learn the reason behind this particular battle since it isn't the normal reason why basically all the clubs competed. As always, the members of Central underestimate this group of first years and honestly I wasn't surprised with the results. Although this story arc takes up the majority of this volume we do move on to the beginning of another.

The story moves on to show more of how the classroom is being set up. We get to see more of some of our main characters abilities and this somehow also leads to the start of another shokugei. I can't wait to see what this one leads to! It sucks that I basically has to wait 3 months in the next volume is available in English.

It feels like there was a lot going on in this volume for such a small section of plot. Ryo battles one of the new elite for the survival of the cutting edge cooking society - or, rather, to pay the upperclassman back for an insult paid when delivering the announcement that the society would be shut down. This leads to Alice confronting her uncle over his treatment to Erina in the past, when he makes a surprise appearance at the shokugeki. Finally, we see more of the changes brought about by Amani in the day-to-day running of Totsuki- and learn more about Azamis’ long-term goals and how they will effect all of Japan - when Tsukasa (the 1st seat) attempts to recruit Soma to his side as part of central.

I think Ryo is actually my favorite, so this volume made me happy (although, I agree Lara - too many foodgasms! Especially with the young, innocent looking characters. :/) I'm excited to see where Soma's next shokugeki goes!

I totally ship Alice and Ryo.

But damn, Soma! Going for the big one straight off the bat? How are you so confident that you’ll win???

This one had a little bit more filler than the others, but I am really loving the plot development especially the stories within stories!

Ryo is such a badass! And I really enjoy Eishi Tsukasa’s characters. He’s such a great chef, it’s no wonder he’s the first seat. It’s too bad he’s on Central’s side.

A fine entry focusing mostly on the side characters. But I'm here for Soma, and the book doesn't really catch fire until the last chapter sets up his next shokugeki. I'm worried that even Soma can't save this series from the dreadful storyline where the new dean is a ham-fisted villain.

The volumes seem to be getting shorter, is it just me? Or is it because there haven't been any side stories or recipes that take up the extra pages?

The showdown between Ryo and Central lackey Rentaro was fascinating. Not only were both of their salmon dishes delicious-sounding, we also learned a lot of interesting information about their dishes. Rentaro's saumon confit flamme with savory salmon ice cream was on the cutting edge, contrasted wtih Ryo's salmon coulibiac, which is a centuries-old dish with royal origins.

Central's operating philosophy is that Totsuki will teach absolutely every student how to cook like the elite (if I understood correctly), but strangely, Rentaro taunts Ryo by saying that lowborn scum like him could never hope to attain Rentaro's elite level of cooking. Huh? Isn't that counter to what Central believes?

I love learning about all these cooking students' various specialities -- whether it's a certain type of cuisine (Italian, French, Japanese, homestyle), a certain set of ingredients (spices, seafood, game meat, vegetables), or certain way of preparation (fermentation, smoking, temperature, technology), and Rentaro's speciality -- heat and temperature -- did not disappoint. I'm actually learning quite a bit from these manga, and gathering inspiration to improve/change up my cooking, too.

This volume is more of a filler one (it doesn't contain events as impactful as the events as volume #18), but it doesn't feel that way. We see Erina's transformation continuing -- she's no longer the haughty heiress Erina that we knew from before -- and Soma's gang of friends (the anti-Central group) score a victory in the form of Ryo's shokugeki, the first of the Survivors Purge shokugekis that wasn't a Central victory.

Elite Ten first seat Eishi subs for one of Soma's cooking classes, and finds Soma to be an excellent sous chef (especially after the rigorous workout Soma got during his stagiaire at Shino's). He invites Soma to join Central and become his right-hand man.

Food Wars: Shokugeki no Sōma!, Vol. 19 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (155–163) of the on-going manga series.

The shokugeki between Ryō Kurokiba and Rentarō Kusunoki concludes. Fighting to save Alice Nakiri's society from being abolished by the Azami Nakiri, her uncle, and his administration, Ryō Kurokiba, battling as her champion, begins his shokugeki with Central elite Rentarō with the theme is salmon. The shokugeki was extremely close – the outcome almost a tie, but eventually Ryō ekes out a win and the society was saved.

Unfortunately, while Alice Nakiri's society was saved – it was the only one. As Azami Nakiri literally dismantles the defeated thirty-two organizations and changed the curriculum too much that several teachers have quit. Eishi Tsukasa, First Seat Member of the Council of Ten Masters, took over one of these lessons. Nicknamed the Teacher Killer, no one wants to be his sous-chef, but Sōma Yukihira volunteers, which they complement each other extremely well.

Afterwards, Eishi tries to recruits Sōma to Central, but refuses. In the end, they ended up challenging each other in another shokugeki. If Eishi wins, Sōma would transfer to Central and becomes his sous-chef indefinitely and if Sōma wins, he would take Eishi’s place as First Seat Member of the Council of Ten Masters.

This tankōbon is written by Yūto Tsukuda and illustrated by Shun Saeki. It continues the takeover of Tōtsuki Saryo Culinary Institute by former student and dropout of Azami Nakiri. Azami is systemically and slowly dismantling what Tōtsuki stood for piece by piece. Having been successful in destroying all but one cooking societies down it seems like Azami's Administration is still going forward. The tankōbon closes with Sōma Yukihira and Eishi Tsukasa shokugeki, which would determine Sōma's future.

All in all, Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Sōma, Vol. 19 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.

Ryo gets called a "scrub" and decides to take the fight to "Central's cannon fodder". I still think it's cheating to be able to bring thousands of dollars of equipment to a match, and bring specific high-quality ingredients, but that's how this series has gone so it's not gonna stop now. Oh and we find out what the big villain plan is... and... what the hell? Really? THAT is the plan? This is so stupid. Why.

This series also keeps throwing naked teenage girls at you - at least they're wearing underwear now! In the scrub/fodder match-up all the judges are old men so they specifically give the girls on the side line a taste (while Soma complains about not being able to taste, sucks to suck you were born a dude) so they can be stripped down in the 'foodgasm' scenes. We also get Hisato and Erina having a heartfelt conversation about Erina's current mental state... oh they WERE in class right before the conversation but they quickly moved to the changing room so they could have the conversation in their underwear.

At least Alice gets some cool moments here? One of my favourite characters in the series, honestly. Her reaction faces are cute and I like that she actually cares about the people around her (Ryo and Erina) and is motivated by/for them instead of a generic 'I want to get better' that everyone else has.

After watching a bunch of episodes of the anime, I thought I'd go back to reading the manga.
The battle between the brutally-limited haute cuisine ideas of the new administrator and the ideals of the young chefs and older staff members is highlighted in the first half of this volume in particular, as Ryo faces off against one of the chefs fronting for "Central." Of course, since it's a manga about Soma Yukihira, the cover illustration has to do with the second half of the story, which is his. In the new regime, he learns more about cooking, but also about the goals of the new guys, and why he has to oppose them with every fiber of his being.
Once you've read the volume, the cover art will make perfect sense. You have to trust me on that, because it's very odd until you reach that point of the story. Then it suddenly becomes brilliantly clever as a piece of cover art.
I'm not going to continue reading the manga in a rush, but plan to savor the volumes. This is not only because I'm fascinated by the story, but also by the simplified gourmet recipes that they are including in the story. Sadly, the measurements are vague, such as the "one bunch of spinach" in this volume, in a case where that is NOT a sufficient piece of information about how much to use.

A much needed reprieve from Memories of Ice. I'm actually really enjoying that book, but it has not been easy to read in the midst of exhaustion and brain fog--there are a million characters and the thing weighs a million pounds. This is much more my level right now--thank you, Tsukada!

Aaaaanyway, this volume has some really great Kurokiba moments--I kind of love him a lot. And naturally Yukihira gets himself into yet another shokogeki with really high stakes that will (at least begin to) play out in the next volume. On the downside (at least for me), foodgasms everywhere! Every time I think we're mostly done with those they reappear with a vengeance. Ah, well.

That end for the challenge with the salmon was quite good.

World: The status quo continues to change and new stuff is added to make it interesting. The time we spend with the first seat is also a new piece that is nice.

Story: The salmon battle was good and well done. It was paced well and the stakes were good. The follow up with central and classes is also paced well with Soma challenging with the first seat a bit nerve wracking. It's good cause it's good drama.

Characters: Solid development for Alice and Erina I love them together. Solid development for Kurobita also. Soma is well done also. Lots of yummy drama.

Solid continuation.

Onward to the next book!

Ryo faces off against one of the Central people to save his mentor's society.

I enjoyed this arc but I'm still struggling with a bit too much food description and a bit too little character development. Soma is (as usual) getting ready to jump into a massive shokugeki challenge against the First seat. Looking forward to that one!

And the cheesy food porn has returned this volume - best line (with a salmon dish) "Any more of this aquatic assault and I won't be able to avoid the riptide!"

Food Wars Vol. 19

In this volume, Central is demolishing the buildings of the 32 societies that post the first battles. The only that survived the first round was the Counting Edge Cooking society. Now all the students are being forced to learn only the recipes that the new dean considers as gourmet. Soma is in his French cooking class when the first chair of the council of ten comes in to replace the original professor. What will happen?

Super cliché. New "villains" and the side character that used to be a bad guy gets some backstory and training. If it wouldn't confuse you, I'd say skip this and the next few volumes, or just drop the series. It's only worth reading if you have too much time and can read it for free. The sad part is that I'd still say that I enjoyed the series as a whole. It just gets too cliché in the long run, but they (publishers, writers, and whatnot) have a formula that works to sell novels.

Whoa...there sure was a lot done in this volume. If I wanted to be a real cook, I would definitely have to try some of the things they cook in here...since I don't though, it gets a little tedious. I'm really surprised by where this one ended, I thought it would have been sooner but I'm eager to see how this plays out.

Taking on the 1st seat

I think what’s best about this is that we finally get to see Soma go up against the first seat of the Council of Ten (just the start of the match mind you), and it’s going to be interesting. If Soma wins, he gets the first seat...but if he loses, then he will join Central as Eishi Tsukasa’s sous chef.
